Stephan Bonnar: 'I get sick of hearing Forrest Griffin's name'

848345736_ba6f21ab30_o_medium

This week's episode of "Fighting Words" with Mike Straka on HDNet, set to air at 8:30 PM ET on August 27, features guest Stephan Bonnar. It also features an interesting quote courtesy of "The American Psycho."

From Bonnar:

"Forrest, Forrest, Forrest! Do I get sick of hearing Forrest Griffin's name? Yeah, real sick of hearing Forrest Griffin's name. You know, it's great being known for a great fight, but God, I get called Forrest so many times, you know?"

Check out a preview of the interview:

He’s not that good a fighter.

Tibau at 145 is a crime against humanity.

The fact that he can make the cut to 155 is nuts.

NNR

Very creative.

Noons does not have power in his hands. Maybe his knees but his hands do not have KO power. they’re good enough to cut up and swell up gurgel’s face, but he won’t be ko’ing gurgel tonight.-STAK

If it wasn't for his fight with Forrest

He wouldn’t even be in the UFC anymore. I don’t think they will ever cut him, regardless of how many times he loses.

its funny

that in order for Stephan to be mentioned and somewhat relevant he has to utter the name he is so sick of hearing.

War Bonnar!

i dont get why fans would hate a guy who always comes to fight

It's better for Griffin to fight Bonnar than Jones.

that poor bastard

I would hate to live in that shadow as well. I love this guy though, he is the very definition of heart.

by Tai_guy on Aug 26, 2010 1:33 PM EDT reply actions

agreed

i would hate to be known for losing what is considered to be the fight that really kick started the ufc and mma as a whole. im just glad to hear that d.white has said he will never release forrest or bonnar and that they will always have a place in the ufc.

i do think bonnar should be a full time announcer though. hes pretty hilarious

I bet he get’s sick of being called a steroid user too.

by Matt Mosley on Aug 26, 2010 1:52 PM EDT reply actions

well

he did use steroids. it just sucks about the circumstances. he used them to help heal an injury so that he could fight, but it ended up costing him a suspension. at least he manned up and didnt try to deny it after he got caught (sherk).

by child on Aug 26, 2010 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

If that’s the proven case then fair enough,it’s not like he tried to cheat.
I’m a relatively new MMA fan and wasn’t aware they were for healing.Maybe the healing drugs shouldn’t be illegal?I don’t know enough about them but it’s not like the fighter is getting an unfair advantage.
Thanks for letting me know.

by Matt Mosley on Aug 26, 2010 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Lots of athletes do the same in all kinds of sports it's the number one go to excuse.

Some steroids increase recovery time so instead being out 8 weeks your out 6 or something like that, problem is athletes are injured all the time so there’s no way to say I was trying to obtain an advantage I was just trying to get up to 100%

most of the time

steroids ARE used to gain a competitive advantage (just like in most sports) however there are many different types of steroids and they all have different functions. while steroids get a bad name because people use them illegally, unsafely, and at higher than “normal” doses. they can actually be very helpful. it can stimulate bone marrow function in people with hypoplastic anemia and is even used for little kiddos with pituitary dwarfism to promote growth.

now as to weather or not bonnar was “trying to cheat”, i dont think he was, i think he just made a silly mistake and didnt want to disapoint his gym, training partners, or his fans by pulling out of the fight. he still ran the risk and it threw his career off track a little bit.

But he did know how to be the last guy to lose to Coleman...

"Long shall we remember
He who walked the road of danger
Master of revenge
Death's no stranger

Blood and death lived on his sword
The god of war his only lord
Into the depths of hell
Go all he fell"

- Manowar hymn of the immortal warriors

by O damn he got caught on Aug 26, 2010 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Coleman my not be the fighter he used to be but he still has a sick double and can still do loads of damage from the guard.

And that fight was pretty close, it was even going into the 3rd and Bonnar spent too much time on his back. And I’m not trying to argue that he is some great fighter, just that he’s a TUF sumbitch that puts it all out there every time he fights. I’m a total mark I know.

I SAY WE LET THEM THROW SOME LEATHER AGAIN...

sure Griffin has two wins over Bonnar but who cares…let them beat the crap out of each other again… who cares!

by pugilista2010 on Aug 26, 2010 2:45 PM EDT reply actions

Who cares about these two?

Don’t get me wrong. I have huge respect for both but that moment in history they made is liken to Spartacus and his merry band standing up to the Romans…it’s history.

I'm told, though cannot say from personal experience, that the stinkiest thing in the world is an anchovey's pussy.

For all the ways that Forrest is better

I think Bonnar is far more durable. The guy’s never been stopped and his only losses before the final bell are due to cuts. On the other hand, Forrest is at risk of being KOed by the cut man applying vaseline to his face before the fight!

by PetrozellisJab on Aug 26, 2010 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

Bonnar is man style.

I don’ t know how you can’t like the guy he fucking brings it people talk about exciting fights he is the definition of an exciting fight. We can thank him for the Jonny Bones Jones show aswell.

i say it's time for bonnar/griffin three after he loses to jones really bad..

i once saw bonnar in vegas at a hotel throw the televsion out the window when forrest gump came on. i think he really does not like that name.

I could see this to be set up by the both of them and it makes sense for the ufc… biggest rematch of one of the best fights in ufc history and Bonnar gets back in the top names and more well known again while forest gets out of fighting bones jones, he clearly wants nothing to do with it…forest simply wants to fight some more fights simply for the sake of fighting he knows some scary fights that are out for him at them light heavy weight division he will do them of course but obviously he would rather not…
