Nick Diaz vs KJ Noons rematch official for Strikeforce: 'San Jose' on October 9

6925-noons-vs-diaz_medium

Well, this story developed quickly. After a weekly newsletter was sent out to fans hinting at a rematch between Nick Diaz and K.J. Noons for Diaz's welterweight belt, we now have word that the bout is official.

Strikeforce officials confirmed the fight with MMAmania.com this morning.

Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz will finally get the opportunity to avenge his most recent loss -- to KJ Noons via technical knockout (cuts) way back in 2007 -- when the long-awaited rematch goes down at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California on October 9.

The bout will be contested at 170-lbs instead of 155-lbs and will be for Diaz's world title. The fight will mark his first defense since defeating Marius Žaromskis earlier this year to win the vacant strap.

Thanks for the info.

I’m glad the rematch is happening, but I was kinda hoping for Melendez-Noons and Diaz-Miller. But either way, it’s great Nick has an opportunity to avenge that loss and hopefully he’ll be able to take it to the ground and dominate KJ.

I agree

I’m guessing (as long as Nick doesn’t go to the UFC), Miller will be next, but I’ve been hearing that Dana really wants Nick back now that he’s grown as a fighter and a man and that Nick is pretty receptive to the idea, especially considering Dream hasn’t been paying fighters and there aren’t too many competitive fights out there for him at WW outside the UFC!

by kevjack115 on Aug 24, 2010 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

but will nick stop smoking or will dana let him go considering the medical prescription?

I'd love to see Nick back in the UFC.

He’s been one of my favorite fighters ever since his KO of Robbie Lawler and it would be great to see him back with the top fighters. But I do want to see him fight Miller as well, under any banner. As tough as Mayhem is to stop, I think Nick is the man to do it.

The rematch is set almost 3 years from their first meeting which ended (controversially) due to Diaz having cuts on both eyes.

Explain how this was controversial please.

by leerage on Aug 24, 2010 7:36 PM EDT reply actions

it wasn't

hence the reason I put it in parenthesis. Some fans and many fighters (not me) see a victory due to a cut controversial, so I covered all basis!

by kevjack115 on Aug 24, 2010 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

does that make sense bro?

as much as I’m a Diaz fan, I pride myself in being unbiased! I for one had no issue with the stoppage, if you don’t want to get cut, stop blocking the punches with ur face!

was suppose to be asterisks around controversially

DrewMoney$$$ is the man, I should have never challenged him to a sig bet. You know he started the Pick 'Em pool late and was forced to replace someone who quit and was far behind in last place his score doesn’t truly reflect how good his picks have been. He still has time to come back and is the obvious favorite for the next pool. By the way im picking the Detroit Lions to win the Superbowl the next 3 seasons in a row, and I would also pick Kimbo Slice to beat Fedor and Brock Lesnar any time. I love Kimbo Slice, he is MMA to me. Anyway DrewMoney$$$ is the man, don’t ever challenge him to a sig bet…

diaz has had 30 mma fights, kj has had only 12...so diaz has the experience factor and has had tougher opponents

and when kj fought diaz the first time it was only his 8th mma fight ever…and it was diaz’s 23rd pro mma fight…so for kj to come in as basically a rookie against a veteran of 23 fights and do that good is impressive….

and still kj has had only 12 fights and diaz has had 30…diaz is pretty much the same fighter…hes still a black belt with sick sub skills and a master on the ground…but has improved boxing skills…

and kj is still the same boxer/kickboxer hes always been…but he has great td defense…..he stuffed 5 of nick’s tds in their first fight…..he stuffed i think 8 tds against the guy he fought before gurgel…and he stuffed the only td that jorge tried….

so if kj still has incredible td defense and can keep the fight standing…then nick is gonna have a hard time trying to wear kj down with those pitter patter punches in bunches that he lands on everyone else…..hes gonna end up with both eyes cut again just like he did their first fight….

the brockness monster grinds up teenagers and puts them in his protein shakes..and uses razor blades to chop toddlers up into lines to snort like meth...the reason no one can find bigfoot is because the brockness monster found him years ago and now has him in numerous ziplock bags in the back of his freezer...

Wonder what that pussy Diaz will complain abouth THIS time?

I’m thrilled about this matchup. Finally Noons gets the windbag back in the ring for a 2nd asswhipping. Here, Nick, let me help you with your excuses for after the fight. “Aw I wuz doin’ okay but the mothafucka thumbed me in the eye otherwise I’d have busted him up.” Or how about “I wuz about to REALLY fuck Noons up but I slipped. You saw me slip, right?” Or try this on for size. “The ref couldn’t see it but everytime we grappled Noons squeezed my balls and made kissing noises in my ear. It confused me for a minute. I thought we wuz out on a date and he took advantage of my romantic nature. He USED me!”

Okay, as we all know Diaz won’t be able to say any of those things because he’ll be unconscious and blowing blood bubbles out of his mouth. The poor bastard is going down. Now THAT’S good MMA.

I am hoping for a great fight, not a complete Noons destruction like last time.

I like both guys and will be impartial when it comes to who I want to win. All I want is Diaz to show us his boxing has improved a lot, not go for a single take-down and them duke it out for a while.

Wishful thinking OJR

Diaz is going in scared on two accounts. He wants to keep his belt and the guy in front of him has already beaten him. If KJ is smart he’ll smile at Diaz when they are first brought to the center of the ring. Diaz will get angry at that and charge in like the numbskull we all know him to be and KJ will pick him apart like a group of fat broads descending on a donut shop after a Weight Watchers meeting.

Diaz will be fighting @ 170

Which he’s way more comfortable at than 155/160 too so I expect to see him with more strength, cardio and resiliency.

Noons has great striking but he doesn’t have much else. Diaz has striking, subs and experience tho his big weaknesses are TDD and taking too many shots…

I love Diaz tho and I’m going with him

I've been around the game since the late 70s (yeah, I'm old)...

…and it’s seldom you see that spark in a fighter where you KNOW he’s going to carry his ass to a title. I’m not talking about the usual fan wishful thinking. I mean seeing in a fighter the ability to destroy others nearly at will. Noons is one such fighter. Compared to Diaz he had no experience before their first fight and Diaz had been in against the best. That said why couldn’t he handle Noons? Nick Diaz is an accomplished fighter, despite the disparaging remarks I make in jest about him. The sad truth here is that Noons is a better caliber fighter and will destroy Diaz when they meet again. It is going to be fun to watch but said for those who think that running your mouth makes you tough. I stand by my prediction. Noons by knock(ed the fuck)out in the 2nd.

Noons is top shelf, I agree.

Most fans(and I use the term loosely) think a fighter is only as good as his opponents. I’m a fan of Diaz but I like Noons and I hope he wins. His fights are extremely exciting and his boxing and take down defense are second to none in this game.

People have to stop looking at records and judge a fighters attributes.

I worked out with a guy named Riley Hawkins...

…many long years ago. Had the pleasure of hanging out with him and Bruce Lee at the Jhoon Ree (damn I hope I spelled that right after all these years) of Martial Arts in Washington, DC. Riley’s top student Marshal McCade was there to do a weapons demo. Anyway, after the event Marshal and Bruce got into an impromptu sparing session and what I saw amazed me. Lee was fast, had all the skills in the world, yet Marshal negated EVERYTHING Lee tried. How? He was a natural. KJ is just such a fighter. He doesn’t think about what he does; he just does it.

Absolutely positive? No, but
I have to go with history and play the odds. Gurgel has never been KO’d and Noons has never KO’d anyone with his hands. Could it happen? Of course it could since those are some damn small gloves they wear and anything is possible in mma, but I don’t think it will.

how the conversation went down? you act like it was such long conversation.

my first comment;

Noons does not have power in his hands. Maybe his knees but his hands do not have KO power. they’re good enough to cut up and swell up gurgel’s face, but he won’t be ko’ing gurgel tonight.

your reply;

No KO power?
He’s gonna be out-hitting Gurgel 50-1 in this fight and you’re absolutely postive he can’t get a KO?

then my reply;

Absolutely positive? No, but
I have to go with history and play the odds. Gurgel has never been KO’d and Noons has never KO’d anyone with his hands. Could it happen? Of course it could since those are some damn small gloves they wear and anything is possible in mma, but I don’t think it will.

that’s it! that’s the whole conversation. so how can the comment that you have decided to quote be more telling as to how the conversation went down? if anything it’s a horrible misrepresentation of how the conversation actually went down.

Diaz has been much more active since their first fight.

Also add to that the public perception of him as the champion and more fans/exposure due his history in the UFC and that’s how they might come to those odds.

I guess that’s good for us if we wanted to bet on KJ. Not so good if betting on the champ.

Who knows though…. Maybe I am completely off and Diaz will be a 2:1 dog.

Agreed.

And I think that is one of the things that makes this sport so great. People make fantastic personal strides and improve very quickly. I believe in Mixed Martial Arts there are many more “milestones” for a fighter to get to the next level.

Young guys can completely change their game within mere months, especially by training in different camps and taking advantage of the helping nature of most professionals. Everyone trains with everyone.

I was one of the people that doubted Shogun(he’s a great example of why people change their opinions on fighters). He looked horrible against Forrest and Coleman, he gassed early in both fights, he was slower….

He made a great comeback from those fights and obviously people are giving him credit again because unlike most fighters he’s been able to go through surgeries and come back. It wasn’t expected.

That first fight was a tough one for him, Noons cut him up pretty good. Diaz couldn’t get him down and that hurt, but i think he’ll keep the range this time and just punches in bunches. I’m not sure K.J. and hurt him, he hit him with some big shots the first time, but never had him in bad trouble, so i’m going diaz by 4th round K.O.

I've been in the gym for 50 years....

….yes, that’s right. Started boxing at age ten, wrestled in high school, kenpo karate from 19 till 40. I’ve worked in personal security, been lumped as time or two and have lumped others. Through all that I’ve had the privilege from time to time to see someone come along that had the natural ability to do from the start what I had to sweat blood to learn. There are naturals in all sports. Brooks Robinson, Johnny Unitas, Michael Jordan, and in my opinion KJ Noons.

Noons has that indefinable “thing” that sets him apart from other fighters. Can he stand to learn? Bet your ass he can. Yet the skills he has at present are sufficient to the job of dismantling Diaz in their second go around. Noons is an Anderson Silva in the rough.

I said it, have already bet on it, and will say it again. Noons by KO in the 2nd.

by phillynix on Aug 25, 2010 12:47 PM EDT reply actions

I can tell you why Diaz will lose

Once I do you’ll realize why I’ve said all along that Diaz will go down. Everybody refers to Diaz throwing all those pitty pat punches but no one ever says why. If you think about it you know because you’ve seen it before and probably from your early youth.

Remember the fights in the schoolyard? There was the guy who would walk in on anything thrown to get a punch in and then there was the semi-coward; the one that threw punch after ineffectual punch to keep the other guy at arms length. Why? Because he was afraid of being hit.

Now, watch every Nick Diaz fight. He keeps his head back as far as he can because he REALLY doesn’t like being hit. He walks in behind a punch of useless punches, head held back, hoping to get in a good punch without taking one. He pitty pats because he isn’t willing to take an asswhipping in order to give one. In a word he fights scared.

Now, watch Noons. He stalks, comes in head down and ready because he knows the old axiom “You have to bring ass to take ass.” THAT is the reason Noons beat Diaz the first time and will again.

I don't know

my wife’s cousin spars with Nick (but admittedly isn’t one of his boys), and he says Nick hits hard. The old guy, while not wrinkled...

…has a scar or two. I’ve banged it out a bit in my life and always LOVED the Diaz types. You can tell when a guy is afraid to get hit and the way to beat him is simple; hit him ONCE really hard. At that point his game plan goes out the window and psychologically from that point on he is on the defense. From there on you just pick him apart and bide your time.

I did personal security work for 15 years (my day rate was $350) and never carried a gun; just a roll of quarters wrapped in electricians tape. I still have ‘em in fact so if anyone is doing laundry I’ve got quarters. Now in all those years I learned how to spot the truly dangerous possibilities and the pussies that talked tough to mask their insecurities. I needn’t go further in describing which group I think Diaz falls into.

Serious question tho.. he’s not white?

i have no desire to “get it” from Diaz and his homeboys.. I can save myself the time and let my lil sister hit me 500times then shove a dildo up my ass. Experiment completed.

Doesn’t change the fact that this guy is overrated for merely being outside the ufc. he has a solid skillset but he’s not elite.. and he is a bona-fide punk.. he just has one of those faces that you look at and you wanna punch him right in that smug fuckin face.

yes I know he would rape me if i said this to his face, but thankfully for me I can hide behind my keyboard and computer screen some 2500kilometers away, doesn’t change the fact people of his kind are bad for MMA and that he is a bitch-ass punk.

secondly, and to conclude.. How does me not saying this to his face make him any less of a thug punk wannabe?

Pay close attention to that ducking

It’s from that old gym standard exercise of bobbing down under a string fixed shoulder height and coming up on the other side and so on and so on. He (Noons) isn’t going straight down and up but is working angles that set up hooks or uppercuts. In essense he’s simply applying basic boxing science. No mystery there.

by lionjack@sbcglobal.net on Aug 25, 2010 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. It's old school boxing. But watch the end of the first round of Noons/Gurgel...

Gurgel was throwing hooks and KJ kept his head down and stationary. It looked to me that a knee or front kick to the teeth would have been effective. Boxers get away with bending forward and putting all of their weight on the front of their feet because no one can knee them or pull them forward for a drag take down.

By way of counterpoint...

…I offer you the one half-assed takedown Diaz managed on Noons in fight one. Noons is quick and reads “the field” pretty well. I honestly believe that he does his bobs safely and effectively enough that it would be hard to get a knee in. As he gets older that may not be the case. Oh, and I’m new here and decided to add a sig of my own. In accurately reflects my helpful nature.

Edgar, GSP, Cain Velasquez, Randy Couture...

…BJ Penn, Old Fat Assed Roy, wish the Iceman was still fighting (but am glad he isn’t)…the list is endless. The only reason I seemed focused on Noons is this thread regards him and Diaz. Wanderlei Silva is ALWAYS fun to watch. He’s like Noons will be if Noons stays around after brain damage. All in all I guess you can say I love the whole sport. One final thing. The only way Couture loses this weekend is if he makes the mistake of trying to stand with Toney. Otherwise I see this ending by rear-naked choke or one motherfucker of an armbar.

Make no mistake

BJ is a full of himself as a fighter gets but he has talent. Sadly, like most guys who have been around for a while, he doesn’t know that it’s time to step off the stage. Even if he beats old monkey ears Edgar, what’s next?

She moaned hotly in my ear "Give me 9 inches and hurt me." Being caucasian I did the best I could to honor her request. I gave her 3 inches three times and poked her in the eye with my finger. That counts, right??

He has to clear out his division again

Maynard, Edgar 3, Florian 2….He has a few options again. He’s in slightly better position for exciting future fights than he would have been had he beaten Edgar the first time.

So your telling me that a SF LW that is not even the best LW in SF can take on the SF WW champion?

  Noon opponents since Diaz
1) Yves Edwards – Good fighter in the early 2000’s but way past his prime now
2)Andre Amade – Don’t know anything about this guy so I looked him up and he was on a 3 fight losing streak before he fought Noons
3) Conor Huen – Don’t much about this guy either, him and Noons had a close one that ended in a split, he must be good LOL?
4) Jorge has been around but he was never top tier calibure of fighter, more of a Dan Lauzon calibure.
So he goes from fighting Diaz in Elite to much weaker opponents? In my opinion Diaz has fought much tougher opponetns and remeber that was at LW a weight Diaz did not like fighting at.

My god

Give it a rest with the opponent break downs. Don’t you ever get tired of Wikipedia?

Who cares who fought who since they last matched. Look at Noons’ striking and TDD. He should run right over Diaz regardless of who Noons has had to fight recently. He matches up very well against Nick.

I'll believe it when I see it, I admit I'm not a huge LW fan and don't pay as much attention

But I don’t understand how he’s not fighting for the LW belt instead the WW belt. I followed Diaz and I don’t think his competition has been that great either but besides Diaz there isn’t a fighter he has beat that proves he deserves a shot? I think Diaz is a good fighter I didn’t see his last fight with Noons so when I get home I’ll watch more Noons fights including the one with Diaz to give a better opinion.

You've already seen that he matches up well with Diaz, they fought.

This is SF so I won’t complain that Noons doesn’t deserve a shot(he doesn’t deserve a title shot) but this is the best fight for Diaz in SF. They are so shallow in their talent pool it isn’t funny.

That's his job kevjack

He’s in there to fight. That said it doesn’t change the fact that he’s scared to get hit. His unconscious physiological reaction to a physical confrontation can be easily seen in his posture. As far back as he keeps his head it almost looks like he’s about to lay down. As for you disagreeing with me, and capping that sentiment with an exclamation point, doesn’t change the fact that he fights offensively from a defensive posture. THAT is why he’s going to lose to Noons. Noons commits. It’s like he’s saying “Come and make me bleed but count your arms and legs as you back up because I’m tearing something off you.” Fighters like that scare the shit out of the Nick Diaz’ of the world.

But all this, for now, is just conjecture. I’ll add your name to the list of those to send a condolense card after this fight reaches its inevitable abbreviated end. Noons by a clean KO in round two.

KJ is not going to sit in Diaz's guard for a second...

So Nick has no real way to win this fight. His takedowns are easily stuffed by KJ and his standup is entry level to KJ’s. There’s nothing to indicate that Nick has any real chance of winning this fight. He got dominated in the first landing only a few of his patented “pussy fwaps”.

Great news!!

This is the fight i wanted to see. This is the fight i predicted would bring in an even larger audience if promoted properly; they now need to promote this fight the way it deserves to be promoted.

The Diaz vs Miller fight did not excite me; down the line sure, but right now just because they had a little scuffle?!? That’s supposed to bring in a large audience, really? If Strikeforce went with that it would have really shown how bad of a position they were in.

KJ Noons has a lot of steam behind him right now after his brutal KO over Gurgel in a really exciting fight. In the first fight, KJ didn’t just win a cut stoppage, he was tagging Nick over and over and even dropped him with a huge punch!

KJ vs Diaz 2 is a great fight with the potential of bringing in a big audience if promoted properly. The footage from the first fight and footage from their past few fights would be more than enough to get people pumped. So glad they didn’t go with Miller.

People tend to rewrite history in their memory

…and conveniently forget the truth. Personally I seem to recall Diaz scooting away on his butt out of fear at getting his lips torn off by Noon’ haymakers, all the while bleeding all over the place. Oh well, perhaps I imagined it.

Pint? PINT?! Nay sir I say a barrel and a wench to sit atop it!

Okay, so I went to medival times while I was out in LA. Food wasn’t bad, the serving wenches had great “protuberances,” and watching those idiots beat the dogshit out of each other for my entertainment was okay too.

the burning question

Did you say “Beer wench, gather me up another drink”. And if so, was it received well? I called a server beer wench once, it didn’t end well.

I honestly did call out...

…“Another flagon of ale serving wench, and by God you’d better be quick about it.” She came with my beverage, leaned in, and whispered “You had better be a good tipper.”

It’s been fun ladies and germs but I have to be off. Yet before I take my leave I’ll once again say….NOONS BY KNOCKOUT IN ROUND TWO!!!

What does a man with a GIANT penis and testicles the size of poolballs have for breakfast? Well, this morning I just had coffee.
