UFC Quick Quote: Dana White hopes Randy Couture smashes James Toney

Danawhiteufc107blog125x125_medium

"Well, Toney has gotten in the best shape he's ever been in in about I don't know how many years. He's taken this a lot more seriously than he has his boxing career. One of the things with these boxers they have been doing it since they were little kids and how much can they learn? They start to get bored or lazy or whatever you wanna call it. So they don't train as hard. Toney has taken this serious. He's gotten in the best shape he's been in in years and this is going to be a very interesting fight. Anything can happen when two good guys go in there and start throwing punches, scrapping, and fighting. Anything can happen, but James Toney has knockout power in both hands, he's been one of the best and he's fought the best forever. Randy Couture has great wrestling and if you break down stats, James Toney doesn't have as many tools as Randy Couture has so Couture should win the fight. James Toney has talked so much smack I want to see him get smashed in this fight."

Never one to hide his true feelings, UFC President Dana White tells 790 The Zone in Atlanta (via SportsRadioInterviews) that he is hoping James Toney not only gets beaten by Randy Couture at UFC 118 this coming weekend, but gets beat down bad. It's no secret that James Toney and Dana White haven't exactly shared pleasantries through the media in the lead up to the August 28 showdown, but is it wise for the bossman of the promotion to be openly rooting against one of his fighters, even though it is "Lights Out?" Anyone at all bothered by this, or do you share Dana's sentiment about the outcome of this bout?

Actually...

I know Randy will win via GnP, but I would love to see Toney land a nice crisp combo like Noons layed on Jorge Sat night.

I actually find Toney’s trash talk hilarious because I can’t understand any of it. From a purely entertainment standpoint, I hope James isn’t one and done after the loss to Couture.

Dana compliments toney but the states he wants him smashed

Of coarse any media will highlight the insult. If what Dana say’s is true? I’m really looking forward to this no matter how some want to state that Toney was overrated and this and that in boxing is BS he was a great boxer but he was lazy too and his hands will be the best striking hands in MMA. Now once on the ground Toney is done but standing I’m excited to see what happens.

Whether Toney wins or losses

we should see more boxers coming into mma. If he wins we should see an increase sooner rather than later.

I’d love to see Haye fight in mma. I saw an interview where he says he has been training in mma for 5 years

Arm.bar.bandit saw me slow dancing with Anderson Silva. I had my hands on his ass.

And there is no longer a demand to see two overpaid boxers fight and this is what killing boxing

Two boxers receive 99% of the purse and the other boxers get 1% leaving crap fights? There is no organization and the advertisement and fans are dropping faster than Tito’s fans are!! There are a lot of good boxers out there but none of the top names wants to fight a young and upcoming boxer that would steal their fame so they get left in the dark and never heard of but thats what happens when you give the boxers and their management a guaranteed 20+ million!!!

I know OJR

when I did my salary post, I believe it was crazy, like 80% of pro boxers have a day job. I’m a big fan of a set purse say (just to keep #‘s round) a million. winner gets 75% loser gets 25%. It makes for both fighters working their hardest, which I’m not convinced you get when 2 guys are guaranteed 50 million

I am not saying there is better pay, period, in boxing, but...

The incentive to box is greater because the highest end of the spectrum is unbelievably larger in boxing. If you win a major sanctioning body title in any weight above 140 ish, you will make more money than any MMA guy excepting Fedor and Lesnar.

It is not about the average salary because most of these guys, when young, believe that they will reach Mayweather money. Other wise they wouldn’t do it.

by Ulf Murphy on Aug 24, 2010 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

good point

but in the same spectrum, most guys think all NFLers or NBAers make millions when in reality the average salary in a few 100k, and that average takes into account the guys making 100’s of millions. Reality is, the average pro career (in any sport) is under 3 years and only ur superstars are making 8 figures. Fact is it’s a pipe dream no matter what the sport!

by kevjack115 on Aug 24, 2010 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

But it doesnt stop kids from dreaming it. Hell, 3 years ago I had the conversation with my nephew who thought he was big shit on his HS team. I told him not only did he have to be the best player on his team, by a mile, he had to be better than everybody in the conference to even have a chance at the NFL. And he played in a league that put some notable guys in the NFL so he played in a good league. Ricky Waters, Jon Rtichie, Kyle Brady, etc. He just joined the Navy.

But I can’t wrap my head around that one fight. What you thinking? Kenny hasn’t fought a good wrestler in a long time, do you think he can keep it standing?

That's exactly what I'm thinking. Even if it goes down, Kenny will open hm up and maybe get a doctor stoppage.

I’m probably going with Kenny anyway but Gray is a sumbitch that could screw my picks up.

I don't know jay

He worked his way back up the ladder and deserves another shot more than Sonnen does in my opinion. GSP got rolled his first fight against Hughes the second fight GSP owned Hughes. If fans said the same about GSP because of his firt performance and we never got to see 2 that would of sucked. Kenny if he wins is the #1 contender in my opinion?

And I agree that BJ would beat Kenny again but Kenny would have the best chance out of any LW next in line. If BJ moves up to WW I think he needs a dominating win otherwise he should defend the LW belt two more times at least?

He ain't gonna change now

Dana White isn’t one to bite his tonhue and if he doesn’t want Toney to win he’s gonna say it. No way to change it, you just have to accept that he isn’t a big whig that is gonna run things behind the scenes. He’s going to comments to promote the fight and get media attention. It’s actually smart. Just the simple fact that we are talking about this right now proves that he is a wise businessman.

I just think it’s ridiculous to chastise the UFC while extolling the virtues of Bellator when they are both clearly motivated by putting on marketable fights. If Bellator just wanted free competition then they would have given their title holders legitimate competition in their non-title fights instead of protecting them with easy wins to increase exposure. I really like Bellator too, but I’m not going to protend they have more noble intentions or practices than the UFC.

I respect that he's open about it.

Dana has repeatedly trashed freak show fights and this clearly qualifies. However, if he were to try and spin this as legitimate then I would have a problem with it, by being honest about exactly what’s going on I think he maintains credibility. And even though he signed Kimbo Slice, he did exactly what he said he would with him. He made him go through TUF and when he showed he couldn’t cut it in the UFC he dropped him instead of continuing to make money off him like he easily could have.

Yes he is cheering for the MMA fighter over a pure boxer, after all the things boxers have stated Dana called them out and Toney is the first good boxer to accept and Dana gave him credit. He would love for more boxers to come but he first wants to prove that MMA fighters are for real and if you fight in MMA you need more than jsut striking and most MMA fans would agree.

I'd agree if it made sense

how is wanting someone who has basically stalked you and threatened you to lose corrupt?
CORRUPT would be Dana paying Toney to lose, he’s just hoping he loses. This is the first time I’ve ever heard Dana actually pick who he wants to win a fight. Is it wrong as a promoter? Sure, but is it corrupt? Not any more corrupt as Coker paying Henderson a shit load of money hoping he beats Shields!

by kevjack115 on Aug 24, 2010 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

it makes all the sense in the world. how can u possibly take the business the ufc runs seriously?

they’ve set up a playground where they can get away with everything.
1st , they’ve got matchmaking, big no-no.
2nd, Dana saying he wants fighter a to beat fighter b one time is enough + this is not the first time, he’s sent many fighters he’s had disputes with right down the toilet hoping to see them lose.
3. Friends like stephan bonnar, chuck liddell, randy couture, brock lesnar and so on get all the oppurtunities in the world that other fighters wouldn’t b/c he likes them and b/c they are popular with the fans.
4. guys like yushin okami are put on hold b/c they are boring.

then to top it off lorenzo is involved in the casino business, and was a commissioner on the nsac.. what’s worse is that the tools sitting in all these commissions and stuff like that have no real scoring rules and horrible judges/refs.

friends

chuck is his only friend of those you mentioned, the rest are commodities!

by kevjack115 on Aug 24, 2010 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL, this one was half coherent

1.Matchmaking is a no-no? How do you think any boxing does it? Do you think they draw numbers out of a hat or have a scheduled season? You make the matches the fans want to see. If I pay for PPV’s I want to see the fights I want to see. If I feel like seeing BJ Penn go up a division and fight for the belt without winning a contenders match or even having to make that weight in his previous fight, I want to see it. Do you think the UFC would be around long not listening to the fans? We decide who fights whom. Not some rankings, because Frankly, I won’t pay to see John Fitch headline a PPV against GSP every 6 months.
2.Dana can have his favorites. He doesn’t have any effect on the outcome of their fight, so he can choose to root for his friend of 12 years if he so chooses. He isn’t a ref or a judge, he does not need to be impartial. Hell, he can pay Randy 50,000 extra in front of the cameras right after the fight and people will applaud Dana for his generousity.
3.They sell. This shouldn’t need to be explained to you. This actually ties in with number 4. Guys like Chuck, Brock are given oppurtunities because they are padding Dana’s pockets. These guys are making the money and have fans so they get special treatment. It’s no different than an incentive or bonus at work. Yushin is boring, he won’t sell so Dana doesn’t want him headlining. It is business. McDonalds doesn’t advertise their napkins because people don’t care about napkins and they don’t care about Yushin either.

Lorenzo WAS a part of the commission, he quit after the UFC was sanctioned in Nevada. That was shady. You’re 12 years late on that complaint though.

you just gave all of the examples that they followed and promoted in boxing and failed so miserably with. Dana is doing exactly the same thing and you just admitted it.

People keep saying boxing is dead

I hate this comment. I personally love both boxing and mma. Boxing is not close to being dead. It is not as important to Americans anymore but it is not even close to being dead in other countries or world wide. Boxing is ten times the size of mma world wide. The only reason boxing is not big in America right now is because there is no huge dominating american heavyweight fighter. If another Tyson or Ali comes out the there will be a huge following in America again. Wladimir Klitschko draws nearly 50,000 fans for every fight. The only great american fighter right now is Mayweather and people cheer against him. You also have Andre Ward. but that is it. You let Americans dominate the weight classes again and see how dead boxing is in america. The problem is that probably will not happen becaused the rest of the boxing world has caught up to american boxers.

if Dana/UFC is running a legit sport and/or if u could even call it a sport. I’m saying popularity and money matches aside, it’s not that good for the sport of MMA or for the sport world. It’s 100% more about entertainment like a TV show right now and Dana clearly wants to make headlines over having a good fair sport, which is the wrong mentality to have. The way we’re heading we’re looking at so much more than just matchmaking as a fix, we’re looking at scripted matches shot right outside of universal studios and we’re looking at tons of Kimbo’s who get a shot b/c they’re popular.

As far as Kimbo is concerned (don’t know how he got lumped into this considering he has no real skills), that could have been seen as a money making venture for Dana…except Kimbo was never put on a ppv card so he technically never sold a ppv show

I can remember as a kid in the early 90’s going to a dozen or more braves games a year and could afford good seats. Now I may go to one or two because of the prices of everything. That being said i still love the sport but the fire to watch it has left. Now i usually attend college baseball games because the games are just as exciting and cheaper. Hell i cant even name Atlanta’s starting line up anymore. I have seen this happend to dozens of people and heard hundreds talk about it. Now when it comes to mma I love watching it on tv. The prices of the baseball and football take a lot of the excitement out of the game for a lot of people. I love football but I mostly watch college becuase it seems like a more pure game than nfl

.
I understand that the NFL makes more money but that is because the United states is richer than 75% of all the countries combine that are apart of fifa.

Pretty much, if you are pulling more for Toney, then you're uneducated.

Anyone that has any level of respect and understanding for all the disciplines in MMA game has respect for Randy. He’s been in the UFC for about thirteen years now and he can trade punches and submit, even though he is primarily a wrestler. People that say F*** randy or whatever actually make me laugh, but also make me feel disappointed and shows me that there are many noobie noobs who like to talk trash, but don’t understand what a real fight is. I used to watch boxing-talk about a lame as way to fight. Watch UFC 1-4 to see boxers get humiliated with real fighters… =]

this post makes no sense

so I’m not educated at all because I don’t NEED to see Randy nbeat Toney?

And how many boxers were in the fist 4 UFC?

I remember 1 or 2.

What’s wrong with not liking Randy? I have to forget he’s a money grubbing Philanderer just because he’s the MMA guy against a boxer? Fuck Randy.

Noons does not have power in his hands. Maybe his knees but his hands do not have KO power. they’re good enough to cut up and swell up gurgel’s face, but he won’t be ko’ing gurgel tonight.-STAK

how is that a good point?

Sonnen talked trash about Silva, not About Dana. Also Sonnen never said he would knock out Dana after he knocked out Silva

huh?

wow and here I though we were having a discussion, guess not!

I'm just saying him and Sonnen compliment each other well.

I’m starting to not care what Dana thinks. He has done great things for the sport and I’m not sure anyone else could have gotten the UFC to the place it is today. BUT I’m tired of his self promoting and biases towards anyone not sharing the same thoughts as him.

toney is gonna knock the bathwater out of randy

its gonna be a murder

the brockness monster grinds up teenagers and puts them in his protein shakes..and uses razor blades to chop toddlers up into lines to snort like meth...the reason no one can find bigfoot is because the brockness monster found him years ago and now has him in numerous ziplock bags in the back of his freezer...
