Dana White: 'I'm looking toward the Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen rematch'

Anderson-silva-chael-sonnen_medium

Let's run this back.

After a performance of a lifetime, albeit one that ended in defeat, Chael Sonnen has been rewarded for his hard work both inside and outside of the Octagon.

UFC President Dana White this morning appeared on ESPN's SportsCenter and with that made an announcement that some fans may love, others not so much.

Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen 2 will be the next title fight in the UFC's middleweight division. White admitted that this is the fight the fans want to see, and his job is to make those type of fights come together. No announcement was made regarding when the fight would happen, though it likely won't be until early next year as Anderson Silva recovers from injury.

So, now that we know the rematch is in the works, how do you feel about it? Is it rightfully deserved? Does Sonnen have a chance the second time around?

Check out the full video interview after the jump where Dana says that Rashad Evans vs. "Shogun" Rua will happen in the middle of next year:

Sonnen made his best versus an injured fighter and couldn't win. Healthy, Anderson will play with him like he did versus Thales and Demian.

DrewMoney$$$ is the man, I should have never challenged him to a sig bet. You know he started the Pick 'Em pool late and was forced to replace someone who quit and was far behind in last place his score doesn’t truly reflect how good his picks have been. He still has time to come back and is the obvious favorite for the next pool. By the way im picking the Detroit Lions to win the Superbowl the next 3 seasons in a row, and I would also pick Kimbo Slice to beat Fedor and Brock Lesnar any time. I love Kimbo Slice, he is MMA to me. Anyway DrewMoney$$$ is the man, don’t ever challenge him to a sig bet…

Sonnen only made one mistake near the end of the fifth round,

he won every other round before that. Andy is the one who needs to adapt because he was in more trouble than Sonnen ever was in that match, he won because Sonnen made an error which should not be too difficult to change. Silva is the one who needs to try a new gameplan because it was a one sided match all the way to the end. Sonnen needs to keep doing what he does and just not give up the arm. Silva has much more work to do. Deserving does not come into it, the UFC is not about who deserves what, its about how much money they can make and giving the fans what they want. They chop and change the rules when they like, its all about sports entertainment. He may not deserve it because Andy won fair and square, but he only just won it while being beaten throughout the whole match in the hardest fight he has had in his life, by a guy many foolishly thought had no chance. He deserves it because the majority of people including fighters believes he earned it. I have only ever been really inpressed with Silvas destruction of Franklin, apart that he has had some good wins and some really embarrassing ones, maybe its time to face the fact that he really isn’t the god you think he is. Get ready to throw away your Anderson Silva quilt, pillow case and matching underpants, because we are going to have a new champion.

by Ade on Aug 24, 2010 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but Sonnen always makes that "one mistake" Ade

Hasn’t he been subbed like 6 times???? The guy clearly doesn’t work on his obvious achilles heel and its highly likely for me the same thing would happen again.

by attakdog on Aug 24, 2010 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions

True, he should have learned from his mistakes,

but the fact that he only got caught during the last couple of minutes during the fifth showed that he must have been doing something right. With so much at stake this time and that mistake costing him the belt, I do not doubt he can correct the error of his ways. He made one mistake which cost him the match, Silva was no threat at all to him up until that point, and that included the stand up. Silva has a lot more work to do than Sonnen, but that still will not save him from ending up on his back. I am truly looking forward to this.

I think he got injured during the fight and won’t admit to anyone(himself included) that Chael is the reason for the cracked rib.

That's a little bit misleading.

The PPV provider gets half of the PPV revenue right off the top. So the UFC’s part is closer to $15mil.

They’re still raking it in, no question, but I dislike when people are misinformed (deliberately or not).

If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...

by misterjonez on Aug 24, 2010 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually there is nothing misleading.

I said revenue is 30 million which is pretty damn clear. Obviously the actual profit is significantly lower.

Bullets dodge Fedor.

by freenow82 on Aug 24, 2010 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Let me be clear, I'm not suggesting that you're lying or

actively misleading people. What I am saying, is that like with taxes taken from your paycheck that you never see again, DirecTV/ComCast/whatever auto-deducts ~50% from the revenue before it hits Zuffa’s coffers.

So to use the gross revenue generated as any kind of basis for Zuffa’s business practices is a bad idea. That’s my main point, not that you were intentionally mis-stating the facts.

I know that I was stunned to learn how much of the PPV revenue went to the distributors, and I assume I’m not the only person who was unaware of their share. I just like to attach that bit of info whenever PPV revenues get brought up for that reason.

If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...

by misterjonez on Aug 24, 2010 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Top line revenue is gross revenue and distribution expense reduces the top line...

while I agree a “disclaimer” should be stated due to the high cost of goods sold (ie the broadcast), it does not render freenow’s answer incorrect.

"Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is to not stop questioning." - Albert Einstein

by Ulf Murphy on Aug 24, 2010 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

And once again, I'll clearly state in this subthread

that I never believed or wanted to convey the notion that I thought he was factually incorrect or purposefully misleading.

It’s just that I generally think the largest of expenses should be included in the discussion if they account for more than ~20% gross revenue. This time it’s maybe ~50%.

One wouldn’t want to say that, for example, your local PUD sells you $100 worth of electricity while only paying their employees and material providers ~30% of that revenue without also mentioning that ~50% of their total cost is purchasing the power from their local coal/hydro/nuclear plant. To do so would be misleading to the consumer who is interested in finding out how much profit is involved in power distribution, whether it was intentionally misleading or not.

If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...

by misterjonez on Aug 24, 2010 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

PUD's are public companies that require SEC disclosures and audited financials...

the info is readily available online with access to both the Income statement and the cash flow statement to answer the questions you require.

The UFC is a private company and does not need to disclose ANY info to anyone but the IRS, and I guarantee that the top line is NOT net of distribution costs.

Consumers do not have the right to business information, only shareholders do, but if you want to pick nits and throw disclaimers into the conversation, you may…you just shouldn’t act like they NEED to be disclosed. Intelligent posters understand the difference.

and I’m betting Sonnen. He won’t be intimidated at all by Anderson’s standup this time. And I don’t care what the bravado says, you know he was a little intimidated last time out until he felt a few shots.

The second time, I see it as a short/mid-range slugfest that Chael wins. Anderson’s striking looks like it’s only dangerous at medium/long range and in the MT clinch.

Polarizing is definitely one thing this rematch qualifies as. But even Anderson’s fans have to relish the prospect of him smashing Chael in R1, which is definitely something to look forward to.

And it’s not like there is a better, clear-cut option. Belfort is an intriguing matchup, but he hasn’t exactly ‘earned it.’

Casual fans vs. Educated fans

I feel like rematches are for casual fans. It’s easier for the UFC because they have already hyped up the fight once, and now they can market the fight twice as easily as they could a fight we haven’t seen yet. The problem is, I feel that the more educated fans lose out on the less mareketable fighters that we want to see. I understand because it is a business first… but it doesn’t mean we all have to like it… grrr. Well, Chael made the most of his rematch with Filho, but I don’t think it will happen again with BadASS. And before some people get mad, I’m not saying that all educated fans don’t like rematches or this rematch, I’m just stating that generally this has been my experience with the different fans I’ve spoken to.

It's fair

Chael Sonnen drew the blue prints in how to beat Anderson Silva. I already knew all you had to do was push him and get all over his face. Why Lyoto Machida get his ass kick? Because Shogun Rua was smart enough to know that in order to beat a “fighter” who all it does is run around like a clown is to charge at him with punches.

by Calculon64 on Aug 24, 2010 12:47 PM EDT reply actions

That's actually an angle I hadn't considered until you pointed it out.

Shogun and Sonnen, using the same strategy but different tactics, did the same thing to similar guys in Machida and Anderson. Shogun blasted Machida on the feet, proving that you can get inside and bust Lyoto up if you’re willing to eat a few shots on the way. Sonnen blasted Anderson on the feet by closing distance and never letting Silva set his range and timing.

I think it has to do with two things

1) the Aura, people were in there fighting the best guy in the world who has been making former champs look SILLY.
2) the style of his opponents. Throwing in guys he can counterstike their sloppy punches and jitz guys with no standup and bad Takedowns.

a combo of these two has led to ando not being pushed.

cue Chael.

I tend to agree that, intentionally or unintentionally

Anderson was given a line of opponents he was able to excel against. And when he did run into a good wrestler who should have been able to push him in Hendo, he pulled off a convincing win utilizing his striking and BJJ.

only thing about hendo is he stands and bangs with the right brick

for such a high calibe wrestler hes been known to not only not get the TD in mma, but BE taken down by “lesser” opponents.

I view Sonnen as the first person Ando faced in the UFC who USES his dominant wrestling. and it showed.

I agree. Henderson fell in love with his right hand a long time ago and really

let his wrestling atrophy. But really, who are the other killer wrestlers at MW? I’m drawing a blank, now that I think about it.

Yeah, and Okami isn't really a master-level MMA wrestler.

Okami is really well balanced, but I’m not sure if he is capable of implementing a relentless takedown approach like Sonnen did. Shields might be able to, and Fitch could do it if he moves up in weight, but there aren’t many guys with the same tools that Chael has at that weight.

Which seems weird, since LW, WW, LHW and maybe even HW are essentially dominated by wrestlers.

If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...

by misterjonez on Aug 24, 2010 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Sonnen is definitely in an elite class of wrestling

But the fact is that Silva’s takedown defense is not great or even good. He’s been taken down in several of his matches. I remember the Lutter match, he had an injury excuse for that one too.

I don’t think LHW is dominated by wrestlers. Only top guy who is wrestling-based is Rashad. Jon Jones has a background in Greco, but I wouldn’t call him a wrestling-based fighter. You also have King Mo and Bader, but the top guys, Shogun and Machida, are strikers.

by Pantherhare on Aug 24, 2010 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

WW is the only weight class truly dominated by wrestlers…
LHW is the least dominated by wrestlers…

by bobncc98 on Aug 24, 2010 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

HUH?

I would argue LHW with onlt Bader, shad and Bones…UFC LW only really has Maynard (#6), Frankie (#1), Guida (15ish) and Sherk (#7) (if he actually wrestles), but Melendez (#3) and Alvarez (#4 or 5) both have a strong wrestling base, so 5 out of top 8 in the world (minus BJ, Aoki and Kenny) are wrestlers. That is pretty good, only eclipsed by WW out of ALL the divisions.

In LHW the number 1 and 2 guys are both strikers…. Bader is unproven and Shad is over rated and was inches from losing his last 2 fights..Bones striking is what makes his wrestling so dominate… If the champion is not a wrestler you can not call the division dominated by wreslters..Period….

Sonnen beat him like he was bought and paid for for 5 rounds then fucked up and lost to the lesser fighter. Silva lucked out that the asswhipping he was handed for 22 minutes tired sonnen and caused a momentary lapse of attention which he capitalized on. I saw one post which said that’s the mark of a true champion. In my opinion it was a gift from God that allowed him to keep his title. I reiterate; fuck Silva and while we’re at it fuck those two jackasses with the Frankenstein faces otherwise known as the Noguiera brothers. oh, and Dana while we’re at it fuck you too.

Also, why would you potentially diminish a contender’s rep (Belfort) unless it is to build up another contender? Sonnen doesn’t need any building up.

I'd agree with that fight if it didn't jeopardize Sonnen's standing as the #1 contender to Silva...

Unless they make that fight as “just another fight with no consequences to the loser except that it’s simply another L in their record”, I don’t want this fight.

Good for Sonnen

He pretty much said it on ESPN that Anderson fooled him into thinking he was going to ride the fight out and had quit fighting. If you look in other rounds Chael was defending good, he was stopping the submissions. In the 5th he figured he didn’t stop me yet and with what little time he has left I don’t think he can now but he unfortunately had one hail mary left.

I hope he can do it this time. Poor guy just wants a dam belt.

“But he was winning the whole fight!” The fact is he lost no matter how well he did, it didn’t come down to bad judging simply he lost. How about a Okami and Sonnen rematch or Maia and Sonnen Silva is out tell next year lets get a proven #1.

Then it was how Mir would beat him again in the 2nd fight…

Then it was Brock will get KTFO’ed by Shane…..

Now some are getting on the CAIN Bandwagon…

Just like people here(some of them) can’t accept Reality that Silva has met his Kryptonite in Chael Sonnen.

No, I don’t think it is. At the end of the day, he was beaten soundly. Oh well. It is what it is.

The people who would blow Anderson Silva if they could...

…seem to think a rematch is a bad idea. Sure they do because, all but for a lapse in concentration in the 5th round, Sonnen would’ve squashed the Spider. Silva supporters don’t want a rematch because the next time around Silva will be waking up on the floor and in portugese will be heard to say to the ref “Noboby fucked me while I was unconscious, did they?”

by bobncc98 on Aug 24, 2010 3:22 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed, but it's not like he had any other options available to him.

It was the very definition of a Hail Mary submission. Just because the secondary was tired at the time doesn’t in any way/shape/form mean that Anderson’s plan the whole time was to get dominated for 4 1/2 rounds before he pulled off a triangle.

BJJ is what it is, a style to make the most out of any given position. He used it to perfection, but it’s not like he was in control leading up to the point he pulled it off. There’s a vague “He was able to apply the triangle, so he was de facto in control” argument somewhere in there, but it’s weak.

He did get the victory, though.

THIS. bob is just butthurt that his "Hero" was less than a minute away from losing his belt.

He already lost his “aura” of invincibility(like Fedor lost his to Werdum) and now the Belt is all he has left. And Sonnen will take that and ultimately “Retire the Spider” once and for all.

GO GET HIM, CHAEL!!

by BrockRocks on Aug 25, 2010 1:03 AM EDT up reply actions

I watched the fight again and again - I think Chael was not as close as it looked

I feel Anderson came into that fight with something to prove. I needed to show that he can be in a ‘real’ fight and not a one sided boring beat down. Ive watched the fight over and over. Anderson looks bored. In a fight where a fighter gets taken down and controlled on the ground by a good wrestler, that fighter usually gets very frustrated and worn out (ie. Marquardt). Anderson was moving his hips, avoiding damage and seemed to not be working for something specific during the first 4 rounds. On the feet he had his hands down and took most of what Chael threw at him without flinching too much (yes, one punch did back him up)

To me it looked as if Anderson wanted this fight to end on the ground (he even took Chael down at one point) I think that the rematch will be very one sided. I think Anderson will keep on the feet and will pick Chael apart.

It looks as if what went on in the first fight was either Blackhouse’s idea or a UFC’s so they could validate both fighters and sell the rematch.

What what what

are you sure your watching the correct fight?

by BJPennfan on Aug 24, 2010 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

really. i just watched it again last night. anderson took tons of shots on the ground. he took, what, 289 shots or something out of boredom? got his ears boxed out of boredom? he was unprepared for what chael really brought. he pulled out the win, but he was losing that fight up until the last minute and half. chael showed no fear, so anderson couldn’t pull the same shenanigans he usually does. and i say that with love, ‘cause i think he’s an amazing fighter. but his cobra met his mongoose.
