UFC Quick Quote: Demian Maia evolves each fight

Mma_e_maia1_576_medium

"The opponent and schedule changes affected me just a bit. I had to speed up the process a little. I was at Bahia and had excellent boxing preparation that couldn’t be better. At each fight I evolve more as a result of the training. I’m ready for everything. He has wrestling characteristics and owns just one loss. If he is in the UFC, that’s because he’s good and can face anyone. He is also tall for the division."

Previously scheduled to face Alan Belcher at UFN 22, Demian Maia had to set up a new camp and strategy for the upcoming fight at UFC 118 versus Mario Miranda on Saturday, August 28, in Boston, Massachusetts. The BJJ expert told SenseiSportTV he has trained with boxing coach Luis Dorea to improve his striking skills and become a more complete mixed martial artist. Is this the fight we see it all come together for Maia? Will Mario Miranda bring out the best in the former middleweight number one contender?

I’m looking forward to see Demian’s boxing. Jacare surprised me and now it’s Maia’s turn.

+1

Jacare’s gotten more well rounded. He destroyed Lindland when they fought. If Maia can do the same, a fight between 2 of them would be a great match up

Went to my first jits class. Don't think I was ever so happy with getting my ass handed to me

Call me skeptical

But not too much evolution after Marquart fight. I mean, he didn’t have enough time in there to learn anything other than fist in chin after lazy kick = KO but I would have thought he knew that already.

there’s a chance he’s put the time in in the gym and up’d his striking

To me in this sport, it’s fighting, it’s mixed martial arts, and I feel there’s too many athletes and not enough fighters…I think these people going in taking these sports enhancement drugs, they’re not real fighters, they’re athletes. I’m a fighter. I’m a real fighter. That’s all I did my whole life. - BJ Penn

I was going to say the opposite....

he showed vast improvements in the Miller fight than all of his fights combined. He has a technical mind too so you could tell what he wanted to do but his rhythm/timing/movements are still evolving.

Agreed, he is still thinking about movement instead of just moving, but he is progressing.

I think he has shown stead progression since entering the UFC.

No shame in the Nate loss. His weakness was highlighted and he’s worked hard to correct it. Still expect big things out of Maia.

Side note, I would love to see Shields come up to 185 to face Maia.

that would be great for a grappling fight

But i think it would be a snooze fest, nothing against the ground game but i think they will cancel eachother out on the ground and than we have to see mediocre standup for the rest of the fight

yeah, Demian looked great in his last bout, well, if not great than MUCH improved compared to even just a few fights before that when he entered the UFC

Demian is a smart guy. If Mirand takes him down, he'll be helping Demian's game.

Maia should get some wrestlers in his camp

I think if striking fails he should learn how to take guys down like Sonnen. Then work his game.

you hit the nail right on the head

Just like okami did. Go to team quest start training with sonnen on takedowns and help sonnen out with his jits (dont think it would happen both are high in mw division) but it would be a win win

Great post.

Maia is EXACTLY the kind of BJJ player who could/would benefit from a hard wrestling camp with someone like Couture, Sonnen or even Fitch. His combination of absolutely dominant BJJ, work ethic, laser focus and fight IQ make for the template of the next generation of BJJ players.

Here’s hoping he improves his transitions to the point where he can dictate the location of the fight against all but the top shelf wrestlers. He would be absolute death.
