Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

UFC Quick Quote: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira was proud of Anderson Silva following UFC 117

Noguiera-1800web_medium

"We were very worried with the injury but he made the right decision in fighting. It like seems a joke but I posted this on Twitter. In the latest seconds before his entrance into the Octagon he embraced me and said, 'Stay calm, master, I’m going to finish this fight.' Anderson is a very dangerous athlete. He was trying that triangle in the second and forth rounds and almost knocked Sonnen out. No doubt those unprofessional statements by Chael made him even more thirsty. His high technique level and championship heart made him to finish the fight with just two minutes remaining to the end. Anderson made us full of pride."

Likely out of contention himself for six months, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira commented on the UFC 117 main event in which his friend and middleweight champion Anderson Silva faced Chael Sonnen in one of the most hyped and exciting fights of the year. As for Rodrigo's future, "Big Nog" told MMAAllStars that his doctor advised him to treat the old injuries (knee and hips) to come back stronger and at the same level of his heavyweight opponents. The doctor also told Rodrigo he would fight at just 60% of his capacity versus Frank Mir if he had decided to face off against the former champion this September. So, who would you like to see Minotauro face when he returns? Should the UFC give it one last go in trying to set up Mir vs. Nogueira 2?

Chael utterly dominated Ando for 4 1/2 rounds. Shocking everyone. Then he lost-fair and square.

I think Ando would be the Underdog in their eventual rematch.

I think it was his dry sense of humor...

He obviously has no problems being on the ground with another man

Agreed.

Just wanted to add that someone who “doesn’t” train BJJ has no clue to step over that triangle?. Don’t believe for a second Sonnen doesn’t train BJJ.

I think he means

he doesn’t train to do subs. Everybody trains how to defend them. It’s the only absolute “MUST” in MMA. Royce Gracie proved at UFC 1 that if you have no sub defense, all your other assets don’t mean shit. .

IF Shields beats Kampman and gets GSP Fitch should move up and try Ando. Id pick him.

Any dominant wrestlers should be chomping at the bit to face Silva before Sonnen gets the chance again. (you hear that GSP)

As a fight fan

I’d rather see a fighter lose a fight from trying to win it…then watch a fighter win a fight from just trying not to lose it. I like fighters who work for a finish rather than just do whatever they can not to be in dangerous positions.

Now as a fan of specific fighters...

I don’t care how they win as long as they do. lol. But most of the fighters I like are guys that look for a way to finish so….yeah it works out.

I always enjoy the finishes

but i also respect fighters who stick to their gameplan/strengths.

Fitch knowes how to wrestle so id rather see him put on 3 rounds of blannketology and win then pull a Gurgel.

i dont mind decision wins (especially from fighters i like) lol

i DO think the UFC should add a Finish Bonus.

He can't finish fights, Andy can

That was the worst I’ve seen Andy ever look in a fight and he still battled through the pain, took the beating and came back strong looking to finish the fight at the start of each round. He almost finished it at round 4 but got carried away when he dropped Chael and got reversed before finding his opening in the final round and applying the triangle. As good as Chael performed he does not have that ability to finish a fight at any time or good enough submission defence to be a champion, he impressed me with his display but performing well then losing does not make you the favourite in a rematch especially when you’re facing a dominant world champion and P4P great in Anderson Silva.

Andy wins the rematch.

I don’t believe his story about the rib being injured in training. I think Sonnen did the rib damage in the first round. But I believe Silva was either really hurt, or that Sonnen really got in his head, because he wasn’t his usual active self from the bottom. Usually Silva on his back is like a caged animal, a whirlwind of elbows, upkicks, scrambles, and sub attempts. Against Sonnen, Silva just hung on for his life and kept trying to tie Sonnen down and stall and looking at the ref asking for a free standup. I think Silva is getting too much credit for that sub…Chael just got overconfident and careless in the 5th round and gave Silva at least a dozen chances to take that wrist and throw up an armbar or triangle. I was watching the fight at a bar, and in the 5th round I was telling the guys next to me…“Look at him leaving his arm on Silva’s chest…What is he thinking…IIs he trying to throw this thing?” I don’t think Chael will make the same mistake twice…but neither will Andy, and I expect the rematch to end the way I predicted the first fight would end, by cut stoppage due to elbows from the ground.

You are wrong

No doubt they’d be much closer than their first bout but Anderson would still be favoured.

Chael is awful at finishing which means AS has 5 rounds to catch him on the feet or with a sub, thats whats working against Chael.

or slice him open with elbows from his back

which is how I expected the first fight to end, and how I still expect the rematch to end.
I would give my pinky toe to see Chael beat the shit out of Andy and win this thing, but even after seeing what Chael is capable of…I’m still not convinced he can do it for another 25 minutes without getting his face sliced up (he’s an easy bleeder) and having the ref stop it from cuts.

Fitch and Shields records are much much better than Chaels.

The more time a fight goes on the more time the other guy has to catch you, so it works against Chael as he is often finished (via sub)

Here's the thing, candyce you don't have to give Sonnen any props (sorry Cali)

but just cause you don’t give him any props, doesn’t mean you have to blatantly lie and twist facts. My thing is you’re saying he just laid there for 4 1/2 rounds and then got submitted. that couldn’t be further from the truth. if that had been so, the submission wouldn’t have been as spectacular and in stating this, you’re actually taking away from AS’ win.

Silva didn't earn that sub

Sonnen gave it to him on a platter leaving his arm laying on Silva’s chest for most of the 5th round. The only thing Silva deserves credit for is being able to take a relentless pounding and still be conscious enough to capitalize on Sonnen’s overconfident carelessness.

a loss is a loss regardless of the margin...

ahh your one of those who only looks at records.win/lose

and not actually watch the fights to judge how each fighter performs.

I would not want you picking winners for me!

I bet you give props to Hammils for his “win” over jones eh

No comparison. Anderson Finished his fight.

If this was decision victory, I would accept this crap about Sonnen gaining fame in defeat but he was FINISHED (he quit). If giving more time, the outcome wouldn’t have changed. Why is everyone downplaying AS injury as if it didn’t play a role in the fight???

HE was cleared to fight

I highly doubt any commission in the US allows a fighter to compete with broken ribs. He didn’t have an injury before this fight and that rib injury is an excuse for his horrible performance.

I didn’t even see any mention of a rib injury in the post fight injury reports.

Noons does not have power in his hands. Maybe his knees but his hands do not have KO power. they’re good enough to cut up and swell up gurgel’s face, but he won’t be ko’ing gurgel tonight.-STAK

Ed Soares invented the injury, like he always does for his fighters...

agreed Jay

Sonnen wasn’t acting like he normally does from the bottom. I don’t kow if he was hurt or just scared, but instead of his usual off-his-back offense, he just tried to stall and hold Chael down and get the Ref to give him a free standup. So there may have been an injury, but it was in the first round like the corner-man said. Saying he got injured in training before the fight even started is pure P.R. bullshit to try and preserve the Silva mistique so every wrestler and their mother doesn’t smell blood in the water.

Randy Couture has been saying for a long time that he’d like to fight Silva. Now we’ve all seen the vulnerability that Randy has probably been drooling over since the Lutter fight.

it could go either way

but as the last fight proved, 25 minutes is a looong time to stay on top of a guy without making a mistake. And I expect a much more active Silva in the rematch and I expect him to capitalize on Sonnen’s tendency to cut easily and slice him up with elbows from the botom till he gets a cut stoppage.

That picture is definitely being brought out every time someone mentions GSP being gay.

Suck that Silva fans.

Why Silva won’t fight anyone from Black House! It seems Chael’s homophobic comments were well aimed!

how does 1/5 equal 50%

You must be using Democrat Math. Even if you count SF and WEC, you’re still only talking what 4/15. But if your point is that Black House is probably the most sucessful stable in MMA history, there’s certainly a case to be made. Although I’d like to point out that Randy Couture single-handedly holds more UFC titles than all the fighters of Black House combined. So Nyaaa!

I’m a fan of many blackhouse fighters, but Silva/Soares have really soured me on the camp as a whole.

Hopefully Big Nog can get healthy and have one more final run to glory

And I felt the same way as Nog did watching that fight, true heart and determination to overcome the odds by a great champion whose heart and will to win had been questioned by many including Sonnen.

I still question it

Sonnen is known for great wrestling and a great ability to get the fight on the ground. From there- he usually grinds out a decision or he gets subbed.

Nog

I just saw The Expendables last night, a lot better than I expected considering it’s a Stallone dominated movie, but as I’m watching it I notice the 2 bodyguards for the rogue general or whatever are played by the Nogueira bros. Thought it was hilarious considering I had no idea they were in it, on top of the other big names and couture.

Stallone is a long-time fan of Big Nog

I saw him interview Big Nog years ago and he talked about how impressed he was by MMA and how much he admired Nog in particular. That’s why I wasn’t at all surprised by the inclusion of Randy and the Nogs in this movie. Sly considers them real-life action heroes, regardless of their acting talent (or lack thereof).

Since when does Dana's word make anything official.

Dana said Hendo was definitely getting a rematch with Silva. He said Tito was definitely never coming back to the UFC. He said Chuck’s career in the UFC was definitely over.

So, who would you like to see Minotauro face when he returns? Should the UFC give it one last go in trying to set up Mir vs. Nogueira 2?

No reason not to go there. That or Nog/Cro Cop/
