UFC Quick Quote: Jon Jones would move to heavyweight to beat James Toney up
"It's funny. Someone asked me about the way I feel about James Toney and I just said that I think he's naive and ignorant by thinking he can stop Randy Couture's wrestling with a hand combination, I guess he took offense to that. He said he would slap me if he ever saw me at a UFC event. I'll let that guy prove his own ignorance. Obviously slapping me he could face some assault and battery charges. How about this, get by Randy Couture first and then call me out, and we can settle it inside the Octagon. I would move up to heavyweight to beat him up."
Jon Jones spoke to The Daily Line on Versus about his growing beef with James Toney after his dominating first round victory over Vladimir Matyushenko at UFC on Versus 2. "Bones" is referring to this quote from "Lights Out" where Toney called him "Homo" and said he would slap Jones if he ever saw him. Jon seems to be pretty serious about putting a quick stop to the filth that has been pouring out of Toney's mouth for the last couple months. If in some miraculous fashion James manages to knock out Randy Couture later this month, who's interested in Jon Jones stepping up to heavyweight and stepping into the Octagon to face James Toney?

I think he has a 1 in 10 chance
He could by some miracle knock him out but even if he caught Randy with a punch as long as it wasn’t a complete KO punch Randy would then have him on the ground and a win would be there within a minute.
I would love to see Jones KO Toney though.
yes
he could pull a matt serra out of the hat and get a flash ko. either way, id love to see bones whoop up on him too.
never have any regrets, because at the time, thats all you wanted to do
Considering he never TKO'd anyone of value at HW as a boxer, I just don't see it.
He is a FAT 170 pounder, even in boxing.

This is accentuated by Handy's lack of a chin.
He got dropped by Big Nog and Nog is my favorite fighter of all time but who are we kidding – he’s not a power hitter by any means.

Nog Has Really Crisp Boxing
So it wasnt surprising to see him Drop Randy. I dont know that is chin is suspect yet as all you would need to do is go watch the Gonzaga fight and he was cracked a few times and ate soem hard punches and head kicks. Also, he seemed alright in the Vera fight.
by AintNoSunshine on Aug 2, 2010 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't know, Vera had him wobbling after the first strike and dropped him with a body kick in the second
Randy’s certainly not glass chinned but he’s not absorbing strikes as well as he once did, even guys not known for their power or technique are dropping or wobbling him. If James counterpunches Randy then he’s going down, Randy’s going to have to go for the takedown immediately because I don’t see him lasting very long with Toney on the feet just as James won’t with Randy in the clinch or on the ground.

Kick to The Body Doesnt Equal Chin
And Vera wobbled him sure but I would think Vera could have put a beating on his chin if it was suspect. I think his chin isnt as good as it may have been but I think he can eat some punches maybe not so much power strikes…
by AintNoSunshine on Aug 2, 2010 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Randy’s slowed down a bit and the punches he used to slip are now connecting cause the other fighters are at least equally skilled and younger/faster in the stand up.
your mother !
Good Points.
I just dont think Toney who hasnt boxed in a meaningful fight in a while and will be making his MMA debut will have it come fight time to beat Randy.
by AintNoSunshine on Aug 2, 2010 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Even in his prime Toney was not a KO artist. The only scenario I see is if Randy has no head movement and goes chin first into a barrage of punches.
"Friends and lovers lie endlessly, caught in the web of duty. Only enemies speak the truth.

Randy is not that stupid
Plus, Randy’s game is tailored made for taking out guys like JT. JT has great hands, but he won’t get to display this. Randy is going to whoop this guy like it is going out of style.
"We fight, get beat, rise, and fight again."
i see
randy going in and getting a quick double leg, then getting a gnp 1st round stoppage. still in this crazy sport of mma, there is a possibility that jt gets a good punch in. and toney does have quite a few kos on his record, and these gloves are much smaller and pack a little more punch
never have any regrets, because at the time, thats all you wanted to do
true..

its true
JT could catch him. I just don’t see Randy getting KO’ed. So even if JT catches him, Randy goes down, and JT does what? Swarms him with amazing GnP? I don’t think so. Even if Randy gets rocked, he will recover and still win.

you need to add a few asteriks next to that
b/c that supposedly happened in training, and it is questionable even there. Mo was likely showing him a guillotine or something. So Mo says “ok put your arm there, leg there, move your weight here, now squeeze….Ok. ok , I tap, let go” JT gets up…“I’s am der beast, nah one masses with James Toney, wheares my blickbelt? a quick double leg from couture?
that’s not going to happen. unless he, for some strange reason, decides to go against everything he has done in the past. he has always taken guys down via the greco clinch.
couture is going to do just enough boxing to close the distance and clinch up with toney, then put him up against the fence for a little dirty boxing, and will follow that up with a leg sweep takedown.
I think it's a little different when you know for a fact your opponent has no ground game

Youtube Toney vs Nunn and Williams......
yes that was a longggg time ago but any boxer as high ranked as Toney is or was has a chance to land something…..if this was 5 yrs ago I wouldn’t be worried but Randy’s chin has looked horrible lately…I’m just saying I wouldn’t be shooked if he landed something….
Same here
James may be old and overweight these days but lots of people seem to be forgetting that he’s coming into this fight with legitimate boxing skills, he’s light years ahead of Randy in the sweet science and if he gets the chance then he will KO him. James may play the role of a fool perfectly but that doesn’t mean that he won’t be a threat. Randy’s going to have to be smart if he’s going to win this one.

Bones, you're a real contender now at LHW. Toney isn't worthy of your consideration, even less so when Randy stops him in the first. Don't concern yourself with an old bum Toney and risk derailing your run at the LHW gold.
perfect.
I agree too, Jones went from prospect to contender last night.
"We fight, get beat, rise, and fight again."
Define contender? top 10? top 5?
He is really dangerous, but, I hate to say this, he is still a bit of a question mark. His last three fights went a total of what, 5 minutes? What happens wehn someone takes him down? What happens when he really gets punched in the face (Bonnar and Gusmao are such KO artists, huh?)? What happens when his gameplan gets stifled? Will these things ever happen? Probably not until he goes to HW.
He said on the after show that he was up to 231 at the start of camp and 226 upon cage entrance. He could probably take 6 months, gain 20 pounds and be devastating at 250, but he would still give up 35 pounds to Brock and Carwin.

i think we'll definitely see him at HW in the future

hes needs a lilNOG/Franklin/Forrest/Couture for his next fight not an Evans/rampage/machida/shogun (let that be two fights down the road lol)

Struve will never be more than a gatekeeper.
To get his frame large enough to keep the Brock’s, Cain’s and Carwin’s of the world off of him will give him very little chance to make 265 and be effective. He is already 255-260 with very little muscle mass on his frame.

He is on the verge of having to cut weight with very little muscle mass. He needs 50 pounds of muscle to keep from being overwhelmed by the big wrestlers at 265. So…he either needs to learn to cut 40+ pounds (possible, but doubtful) or he needs to accept that he will never be elite.

I don't get Red Bull. Can't choke the shit down.
But If I am going out, the Viagra and an 8 ball would do me just fine, my friend.

If he puts on just 20-30 lbs of muscle he'd compete just fine at HW
The kids 6’4 with 84" of reach; his frame is just as big or bigger than most HW’s, I guarantee he can put on that muscle if it ever comes down to it.

we were talking about Struve, who is 6'11"
I think Bones could pull the VEra and win both 205 and then 265 straps. 20-30 pounds of muscle is nothing for Bones’ frame. He will probably end up at 265 or so before he is done.

he is young and talented
but like Ulf says, he can’t really put on any more weight and he will get rag dolled by those beefy guys.

A bit of a question mark, yes
Contender as in right around top 10, he may be just outside, I would like to see him in there against a Franklin type and then, we will know for sure.

I feel sorry for the next guy he fights. Too bad Bisping isn't still at 205.

i don't need to wish for it. Toney won't even make it past Couture and then he will quit and attempt to go back to boxing.

I was talking about the death in the octagon. We could lose our sport if that happened on National TV.

Am i the only 1 that thinks jones has a bitch ass attitude?
He’ll press assault & battery charges? For real =D. Dam I hope they throw jones in there with a killer next time who gives a shit of he’s young!

Not the only one..he’s trying to hard to look like a saint. I think the success is going to his head and I can’t wait for someone to lay a beating and send this kid back to earth. I hope he outgrows 205 and is stuck fighting some of the monsters at HW. Brock Lesnar would eat this kid.
He looks like the type who would crumble if he ever got hit hard. He might be able to dish it out but I gurantee he won’t like it when someone can do the same to him.

I dont think he has a bitch ass attitude. Humble and very sheltered yes, but bitch ass no
He has admitted himself he grew up extremely sheltered. He wasn’t allowed to play with others and was forced to only play with is brothers and occupy himself at home. He grew up in a very religious household and his parents were very strict. I think his attitude comes from his upbringing. The “assault charges” comment brings that situation to mind. It wouldn’t surprise me if his dad still lectures him everyday and is harping on him about how to act and carry himself. Remember, he is STILL ONLY 23. I completely understand your point and where you are coming from, but I don’t hold it against him and attribute it to certain things.
On a side note, am I the only one fascinated by the fact that he never looks in his opponents eyes before the fight. I find it interesting

class & respect for MMA
Bones isn’t smug… he’s intelligent. He is also a professional fighter. That means he doesn’t fight unless he’s getting paid. If Toney slaps him outside the ring, he presses charges…. as a professional athlete should. If Toney TRIES to slap him in cage, he gets his arrogant MMA ignorant ass handed to him, & Bones gets paid. But, as Bones said, that aint gonna happen, because we all know what happens when Toney gets in the cage with Couture.
He's got cardio in a boxing match
The second they get into the clinch it’s over; IF Toney somehow manages to get away and create some distance he’ll be gassed after the first 3 mins given the pace Couture sets. Grappling just isn’t the same. His only chance is a flash KO cause the second Randy gets his hands on him he’s through.

Can't believe Fat Toney called him out like that...
You have to wonder if he did that on purpose, trying to sell himself more to Dana or something…..
