Paul Daley signs 6-fight contract with Strikeforce

Mma_daleyp_576_medium

The inevitable has come to fruition.

Paul Daley has singed on to fight for Scott Coker and boys at Strikeforce. "Semtex" has agreed to a six-fight deal according to MMA Weekly, as first reported by Middle Easy.

The heavy-handed Brit has of course been looking for a new, more permanent home ever since delivering the cheap shot heard 'round the fighting world to Josh Koscheck following their UFC 113 bout where "Kos" took home a unanimous decision win and earned himself a shot at Georges St. Pierre's 170-pound title later this year.

Dana kicked him to the curb, essentially banning the welterweight striker from the UFC for life, but Strikeforce apparently has no qualms in employing the controversial slugger.

Daley was seen in action at Impact FC 2: 'The Uprising' earlier this month as he finished Daniel Acacio in the third round with a forehead-splitting elbow. Paul recently signed on to compete at the upcoming Shark Fights 13 event, and though he still does not have an opponent lined up for that card, he will indeed fight at the September 11 show.

An opponent has yet to be named for "Semtex's" promotional debut with the San Jose-base organization as well, but you have to believe that within the time frame of this contract, Daley and Strikeforce bad boy Nick Diaz will evenutally meet. While we probably won't understand half of the pre-fight trash talk, it is something we can all look forward to anyway.

Who do you want to see Daley mix it up with first in Strikeforce?

Whoever . We all know once he ....

…. gets in the ring with Diaz , who’ll use the Kos strategy ( frustrate with wrestling and shit talk ) , he’ll be outta of a job again for yet another ignorant in ring decision .

Very Frustrating

It is just me or am I the only one who is very irritated by the fact the just a little while ago Scott Coker was saying how he agrees with the UFC and Dana that there is no place in the sport for the antics that Paul Daley pulled after the Kos fight. Now look what just a short time after and one shitty fight in Austrailia and Scott signs him to a Six Fight Deal?

I guess when you are the Cronie Second promotion you can’t be a chooser and you gotta gobble up what you can.

Still makes me not trust Scott Coker’s word but he appears to play the game well on the surface.

I would be ok with people going on about Daley being banned from MMA for life etc.

IF the same would happen to anyone else for the same infringement.

Truth is, if Brock Lesnar had swung at Carwin after the fight he would have got a slap on the wrist. If GSP did it, Shogun, BJ etc there would be no “lifetime bans” on the cards and that’s the absolute truth. All the organisations have proved to be two-faced on many occasions (well at least their MD’s have) and I hate this kind of example being made out of a fighter when the same wouldn’t be done if he was one of the big cash-cows.

I’d love for one of the big names to do something like Daley did (pretty minor thing that most are blowing out of proportion due to hysteria and hype – the same thing has happened in many sports and it’s soon forgotten) – and watch the hypocrisy soon start pouring from Dana’s mouth.

It was an ego-driven decision

The truth of why Dana cut Daley is that he just got through running down SF and saying what a low-budget, trailer show they are and then what happens? The same thing in the UFC. So now Dana has no choice but to cut Daley or admit he was wrong. Now which of those 2 things do you think will happen first?

None of it matters anyway. He’ll be back on another Ultimate Fighter Comeback show facing off against Kimbo.

Good Point

Hey Jimrod I agree with some of what your saying here, but also keep in mind that the UFC has a much more regulated and formal standard Operating procedure in place for all matches.

And keep in mind in General UFC fighters a much more classy as they have been working thier whole fight careers to get into the Big promotion so the weight of thier actions effects them more than if they were in another promotion I agree it could happen, but I just don’t see the top belt holders/ stars of the UFC do something like that.

I do agree that if GSP or a chuck Liddel did something like that after the fight the retribution would or could be a little different. (pre SF brawl) However The UFC isn’t stupid they cover most if not all of thier bases in Pre fight /Post fight control. I have a source who tells me that each of the fighters are spoken to before the fights in regards about what is and can happen after the horn. and may even have contracts stating they lose purse or bonuses if conduct in the ring post fight doesn’t follow thier rules. I think that’s part of why dana was upset at brock the first time, and especially at daley, someone I don’t feel Dana respected. UFC even goes as far as to "set-up " if there will be another entrance from a title holder and controls the amount of bodies in the Ring.

i have a sourse VERY close to S.Coker who said that the night Fedor lost SF almost folded the very next day. Right now S.Coker is doing all that he can to revive his dying company. I predict by mid 2011 the UFC will buy out SF

I've seen the same thing happen in most other sports...

You name it, soccer, hockey, whatever sometimes emotions run over – maybe he was just trying to land the shot that Koscheck pretended he did in the first round… You guys all stand up for Koscheck faking his way to wins for some reason, I consider that more of a bitch move than swinging at a guy. Sure – fine him, ban him for a year to learn his lesson but a lifetime ban is extreme and would NOT have happened to any of the UFC pin-up boys, that’s for certain.

last I checked, my opinion was not included in my request...

I just want to hear how a 6-month ban means anything when fighters fight 3 times a year (every 4 months, roughly).

And emotions running over is no excuse for professional fighters. Ask War Machine.

Maybe Ulf Isnt A Fighter.

But Koscheck did nothing wrong to warrant Daley to come at him like he did. Kosheck didnt fake being hit by the knee. Anyone he says it was faked tells me they arent a fighter. Koscheck implemented a perfect strategy, he talked trash. He said he wanted to bang with Daley, got in his head. Then said no im going to wrestle. Mentally beat Daley before the fight started.

Then the fight happened and Koscheck showed the world of MMA why Daley isnt an elite fighter. His striking is amazing but everything else below average. Koscheck did what he wanted with him and easily won the fight to secure himself the biggest fight of his career and a spot on the TUF show as a coach. Daley was frustrated and mentally weak, he chose to act classless and chose to be un professional.

Daley was wrong, their is no justification for what he did.

by AintNoSunshine on Aug 2, 2010 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

Kos did milk the knee like he did against Rumble which pissed me off but at the end of the day he was the better man and the better fighter, if you can’t keep your emotions in check and try to suckerpunch someone because he upset you then you have no business calling yourself a professional athlete.

Yeah Ulf, if you aren’t a fighter you aren’t allowed to talk about fighters. At all. You aren’t allowed to watch fights and form opinions and express them on the internet.

DutchOzzy, everyone knew what Kos was going to do. He said he was going to stand up and KO Daley, and everyone except Daley knew it was bullshit. Daley had no answer, got mauled on the ground for 15 minutes like we all knew would happen, then he slugged Kos AFTER THE FIGHT because it was the only way he could hit him. This wasn’t a soccer player making a hard tackle from behind or a pitcher hitting a batter in the ribs DURING THE GAME. It was a cheap shot after the fight had ended, and Daley deserved everything he got.

Well will be interesting to see what happens in SF now anyway...

If Daley did manage to make progress (even beating Diaz) then I wonder if Dana would change his mind? He seems to have a short memory as the whole Kimbo thing proved. Either way is a moot point until Daley (and Hardy for that matter) learn some wrestling defence.

I despise wrestling in general, though some can make it exciting, I just think that guys like Koscheck, Fitch, Sonnen, Rashad etc have realised all they have to do to win is lie on top of someone for 15 minutes and that could be more harmful for the sport than any rash moments by one fighter – if it (wrestling) becomes even more prevalent due to it’s success – then non wrestling fans who, let’s face it have WWE to watch for that kind of “fighting”, will soon lose interest.

I’m not sure many outside the US enjoy that kind of “fighting” style.

and damn.. those wrestlers are boring as hell. i know its a part of their strategy. but the ufc will lose fans world wide cuz of that.

by Zlatan, My Hero on Aug 2, 2010 9:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

Agreed that there are some wrestlers who can make it exciting – Bones Jones used good wrestling to serious effect last night – but it was to get himself in a position to do damage, not for positional snoozing.

I think in many cases quicker stand-ups by refs and less sway given by judges to “ineffective” wrestling should even things out a little. Greg Jackson’s “do enough to win” philosophy has taken over sadly, even for GSP, we just need the next generation to come along who can deal with it better – Jiu Jitsu was dominant to begin with, now wrestling – think it’s about time there was a striking era… ;)

by Jimrod on Aug 2, 2010 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Depends what weight class your looking at

WW and HW are very wrestler dominated but MW and LHW both have strikers as champions, have had for some time now,

by attakdog on Aug 2, 2010 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions

True.

My concern is that Anderson has been champ for a long time and is no spring chicken – his No.1 challenger is Sonnen, if more young people getting into the sport keep seeing Wrestlers dominate it will become the focus of MMA training and could really dull down the sport. It’s not the wrestler’s fault really – if it works it works. I just don’t see laying on someone for 15 mins as “fighting”. I hope more well rounded guys like Jones continue to mix in many styles so well for the sake of the sport as entertainment.

by Jimrod on Aug 2, 2010 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but when Silva crushes Sonnen, he's looking at Okami, Belfort and likely Bizzzzbing - All strikers.

I see your point about the wet blanket wrestlers, but it’s up to the strikers to learn TD defence and keep it standing, like BJ, Machida and Silva are able too.

Mark Kerr, Igor, Hughes, etc… all guys that were in the Pride and UFC era that were wrestlers that were did exactly the same thing they do now. get on top and win by position.

See the thing is you cant say you are a true MMA fan if you dont appreciate all the discliplines of the MIXED MARTIAL ARTS. I cant say yeah I love MMA but you wont catch me saying well I dont like tradional karate in the sport.

If you dont like wrestling in the sport from guys like Rashad and GSP maybe you should encourage any MMA fighters that are working towards the top of divisions to work hard on stuffing takedowns, sprawl n brawl style of fighting, sweeps of your back, a aggressive BJJ game of the back as well. Ultimate Fighting not Ultimate Wrestling

And I agree with you on this one ANS, wrestling is a key martial art and if you can’t defend takedowns and prevent a good wrestler from taking you down and controlling you on top then you’re not an elite MMAst. You have to be good at everything to be the best and that includes wrestling as well as striking and other forms of grappling.

Nothing to do with attention span.

I don’t mind watching a good 0-0 soccer game but a crap one is still crap. Wrestlers who grind out wins with just positional control is just plain dull to anyone who hasn’t come from a wrestling background. There can be dull striker fights too (Kimbo vs Alexander?) but wrestling is designed to be about control rather than damage whereas striking is the opposite so you increase the chances for a more exiting fight.

Dynamic wrestlers who can sub or strike can be great to watch, Fitch and Sonnen are never great to watch – Rashad can be and so can Kos (especially when he trades hands and gets KO’d). As you can tell I just despise Kos because I despise cheats – Daley did an immature and douchey thing but it’s not the same as cheating, I’d rather get my ass kicked fair and square than cry like a baby over nothing and win.

by Jimrod on Aug 2, 2010 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I just think the term "boring wrestler(s)" gets thrown around too much. People complain about the ground game too much in general.

I thought the Shields-Mayhem fight was pretty sick, but 90% of the people on here talked about how boring it was. I can understand saying a fight like the King Mo-Moussasi fight was boring, but I pretty much never watch Rashad, Kos, GSP or Lesnar and think they’re stalling or that they’re being boring.

Agreed on Shields-Mayhem

The bashing that fight and Shields in particular took was ridiculous. Rashad got the same abuse after beating Rampage in a fight that I also really enjoyed. If a guy does nothing on top then it can get tedious but if the guy on the bottom can’t attack with submissions and strikes or get back to his feet then it’s his own fault.

You people who are so upset about Daley getting signed;

what did you do after Dan Henderson kept hitting Bisping after he was clearly unconscious, or Rampage on a clearly unconscious Wanderlei? You probably laughed at the first one and were cheering about the latter. Thats hypocritical, in my opinion shit like that would warrant Daleys punishment if the UFC was just. I guarantee it caused much more damage to the two fighters than what Daley did. And how come Koscheck didn’t get any punishment for clearly cheating to enrage Daley? For you guys to have such reluctance against an American company ( not even the UFC, where he should be ), signing Daley who is an extremely exciting fighter, amazes me.

by AintNoSunshine on Aug 2, 2010 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know

Hendo and Rampage both knew that Bisping and Wand were out, surely 2 veterans with 80 (don’t quote me on it) fights between them know when a guy is unconcious. They shouldn’t have landed the extra shots and it was a shitty thing for them to do that could have resulted in a serious brain injury for Bisping or Wand. However that doesn’t excuse Daley for being an idiot and attacking someone after a fight and I’m amazed that anyone would try to justify or defend someone for committing assault on a live PPV.

The Rampage One Arguably.

But the Hendo appeared to be in motion jumped ad Bisping dropped and we all know the canvas has brought people back to consciousness. You want to watch something bad watch the fight with Arlovski and Vlad Matsu… after the ref stops AA he tries although he fails to throw one after the ref is clearly pushing him away.

Both of those fights you mentioned were still on.

Daley hit Kos 10 seconds after the bell.

Im not even wondering why a lifetime ban is appropriate;

Id just like to know why you guys are so against him fighting in the US again when he made a mistake capable of human beings.

by theworldismine on Aug 2, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

No not at all, Im more appalled that people here

would rather see him never fight in the US again, period. I dont really think he does deserve another UFC contract ( although in the future… ), but definitely the chance to fight for Strikeforce. I guess what I dont like is that people would take away a guys living for that.

Just more training for refs and fighters alike

to stop it. Im not tryin to hate on your sport or anything man, just saying for fighters safety. Maybe a slight chop on a refs paycut for a fight if it happens, or the fighters cheque. That would be a motivation not to. Cuz come on, both examples I named were clearly intentional.

You think there was any way for Hendo or the ref to stop that extra shot?

Are you serious? Nothing can be done.

Hendo was in the air almost as Bisping was hitting the ground.

Not a ref in the world stops that last punch.

Bullshit on the Hendo shot

He knew Bisping was out. He hit him, watched him fall, looked at him, and made a conscious decision to hit him again. That was not an immediate follow-up shot.

Our lives change like the weather, but a legend never dies.

by P-Dub on Aug 2, 2010 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed with PW

And the post-fight interview confirmed that he knew what he was doing. Extra shots are needless and cowardly, plus they could seriously injure the unconcious fighter. We need refs to improve their timings on stopping fights and we need the fighters to man up and show some sportsmanship a la Nate against Maia.

your argument is invalid,

as Hendo makes clear in the interview with Joe after the fight

by theworldismine on Aug 2, 2010 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but that would encourage refs to prematurely stop fights

And fans hate that much more than the occasional cheap shot, which are very isolated occurrencies I might add.

No way you can fine fighters either. They’re not doctors, how do they know in the heat of battle with adrenaline pumping whether their opponent’s out or not??

There’s nothing that can be done I’m afraid outside of a ten count.

well what Hendo did against Bisping.. that last punch.

i think Bisping deserved it. and Hendo thought that also.

during TUF, Bisping acted like an asshole (even i dont hate Bisping)

and Hendo is a classy guy.

a good tip for Bisping was back then, dont piss off Hendo XD

Being an arsehole doesn't warrant an extra punch

Daley and Hendo were both in the wrong and they’re both lucky that Kos and Bisping didn’t get badly injured from their actions. I lost a lot of respect for both men when they did that.

SOoo

Kos may have said something to Daley when Daley was being exposed again as a one-dimensional striker, and that warrants the shot after the bell? Nothing Kos could have said gives Daley the right to assault him. Nothing. End of story.

What is almost worse than Daley getting a lifetime UFC ban...

…is Kalib Starnes getting booted for running away like a little girl while Kos gets his own stint on TuF for the same (arguably worse) behaviour… Two fights running he fakes injury to try and gain points or worse get his opponent DQ’d. Hope GSP actually manages to pull his head clean off in their fight.

i really think the UFC needs to use the Yellow and Red cards..

like how it was during Pride.

It worked like a charm during Pride.

fighters dont want to lose a part of their money.

All you do is bang on about Pride, yeah it was great, its over now MOVE ON!

Debatable whether it worked a treat, fighters were always getting yellow cards. Think it would have minimal effect in the UFC. A laynpray wrestler’s still gonna laynpray, take a yellow and a 10% purse reduction if it means avoiding a standup war. They’ll easy make that up with their win bonus.

You really should though

In my past experience people only drone about Pride because their insecure in their MMA knowledge and longeivity as a fan. They think constantly namedropping pride somehow makes them instantly more knowledgable and clearly a longtime fan of the sport. and not someone who started watching after TUF 7. 99% of posters on here know everything about Pride, we all loved it, but it’s over now, it’s not coming back, move on. Constantly referring to it isn’t going to earn you anymore Kudos on here.
