Strikeforce Houston: Will Chad Griggs prove that Bobby Lashley was a bad investment?

Tuyd4v-560x420_medium

Props: SBN Arizona

Quoteworthy:

"Everybody, including Strikeforce, is planning on him winning. They need him to win to keep their investment going. It's not bothering me. If anything, it takes the pressure off me to get in there and go do my thing. Once we get in there, there isn't anybody but me and him in there, so it doesn't matter what they think or what they're saying. I think I have a lot more experience when it comes in to the fight. I think his name is bigger, but when it comes down to it, I don't know if he's been hit in the face. He's wrestled people down and beats them up, so I don't really know if he's tasted fighting yet. That's our goal is to get in there and let him realize this is a fight and I'm here to win, too."

Strikeforce heavyweight Chad Griggs wants Bobby Lashley to join the likes of Dan Henderson and Fedor Emelianenko as the latest high-profile (and high price tag) Strikeforce acquisition to fall despite being a heavy favorite with the bookmakers. "The Grave Digger" will get his chance when they collide at the upcoming "Houston" event on Aug. 21 and could elevate his status considerably by upsetting the "Dominator." Does Griggs have a shot at playing spoiler? Or will a suffocating wrestling attack once again save a fighter from getting KTFO?

was hoping for a bigger name for bob. With a win here he should capitalize and jump into the deep end, or at least past the kitty pool.

No chance they would do that...

Monson would submit him in no time.

Yeah another HW that couldn't beat a top 20 MW

I’m about sick of Lashley. He couldn’t carry Brock’s jock in WWE, and he can’t do it in MMA either.

LOL Also a big Monson fan!

Anderson Silva is by far the number one P4P king!!! Even when he is losing a fight he still comes back and finishes for the win! GSP dominates the whole fight and still can't finish! LOL

Agreed

They will bring in someone with Kimbo like credentials, Striker with somewhat of a name but not ground game so Lashley can just take em down and pound on them.

Kimbo/Lashley...book it.

Don't know, don't care. I dislike Kimbo, but I would root for him over Lashley

by Ulf Murphy on Aug 19, 2010 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

why?

Lashley has legitimate background wrestling skills (onlympic caliber).
Kimbo has nothing to offer and is a joke

by SouthCaliStunNa on Aug 19, 2010 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Well Kimbo may not be "onlympic" caliber

But even Kimbo is a better striker than baby-faced Lashley. I’d root for Kimbo if they fought.

nice catch

Kimjoke wouldnt last a round with Bobby.

My point is Lashley at least has a legitimate background with legitimate skills and could* possibly be a threat. Kimbo doesnt belong in the pros.

But even Kimbo is a better striker than baby-faced Lashley

Hed probably win a boxing match with fitch and sonnen too….means nil. He has zero cardio and zero ground skills TDD.

Bobby is RAW, but has potential.

I think Bobby does have potential

to be a top 20 HW. Nothing more, nothing less.

You’re right about Kimbo though, Booby(that’s right) would take him down and NOT hurt him.

How come you said olympic caliber?

He wasn’t that successful at wrestling was he? He didn’t win NCAA’s or anything did he? I’m fairly ignorant on Bobby’s life story. I thought he was just a half decent JUCO wrestler or something?

he was training for the 04' Olympics when he got injured and had to have surgery (knee)

healed up and took the money with WWE.

by SouthCaliStunNa on Aug 19, 2010 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

See, I did NOT know that.

He was training for the olympics or was he training to try-out for the olympic team? There’s a difference in my mind. If he was on the team getting ready for the olympics, I give him major props. If he was training and trying out for the olympics, meh.

by jay. on Aug 19, 2010 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

hmmm not sure

I saw someone else talk about it, then wikid him and it says he was injured while training for the Olympics.

Not sure tho?

either way, whether he was training for the team or actually on it (which i agree is MUCH more impressive) he had to have been a damn good wrestler.

He wasn't on the team

Most thought he would make it though. He injured it while training to try to make the team. He is a three-time NAIA National Wrestling Champion.

copy/paste from first article that came up

when i googled it. He was an Olympic Alternate.

Lashley placed third in the 211-pound class, earning a spot as an alternate on the team.

So it is kinda somewhere in between

does an alternate count? Also, I forgot about his military stuff from below.

FN hate Kimbo and the losers that brought himto MMA! Their worse bc you can't blame him for cashing in.

damn!

damn! this idiot for having fedor, hendo and lashley in the same sentence…

I am not a huge fan of Lashley

but that is just because I don’t like the WWE converts. But, he has said from the beginning that he wants to learn and he wanted to do it right, by coming up with smaller fights, working his way up. I really don’t get that many of the people that bitch about Lashley are the sames ones who bitch about Brock and how he came up. I could be wrong here…it just seems like a contradiction.

i agree

He has no amateur fights and is basically learning hs game before a TV audience, give it time

by ThePunisher on Aug 19, 2010 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

How many cans does he need to smash before fighting an actual fighter? Two should have been plenty, but he’s still beating up nobodies for a big paycheck. He hasn’t taken a step forward since his “career” began.

by P-Dub on Aug 19, 2010 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

i also agree with that

he should fight guys who have a strength in something lol

by ThePunisher on Aug 19, 2010 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Do you think he is

ready to fight someone like Brett Rogers? I think it would be a good striker vs wrassler matchup.

thats a good one

Rogers is good regardless of two losses. He lost to Overeem and Fedor, not bad for a young guy
