UFC 117 medical suspensions and injuries for 'Silva vs Sonnen'
The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) recently issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC 117: "Silva vs. Sonnen," which took place on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010, from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.
With several of the bouts ending early (and violently), 14 of the 22 fighters who competed on the card were flagged for follow up visits with their doctors.
Chief among them was UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, who was battered but not beaten by Chael Sonnen for nearly five full rounds. The "Spider" will be on the sidelines with a rib injury and neurological issues for up to six months, unless, of course, he can get a doctor to clear him to return sooner.
Regardless, the Brazilian must serve a mandatory 45-day medical suspension and cannot have contact for at least 30. Sonnen, meanwhile, will be shelved for at least 60 days and cannot sustain any contact during that time, either.
Rafael dos Anjos (broken jaw), as well as Stefan Struve (lower lip laceration) and Christian Morecraft (head trauma), were also singled out after sustaining their fair share of punishment inside the Octagon.
But that's not all.
Here is the complete list of UFC 117 injuries and their medical instructions:
Anderson Silva: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact) for rib injury and neurological follow up.
Chael Sonnen: Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact) for lacerations.
Rafael dos Anjos: Suspended 180 days (180 days no contact) for broken jaw.
Roy Nelson: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact) for "hard bout."
Junior dos Santos: Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact) for right cheek laceration.
Dustin Hazelett: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact) for precautionary reasons -- needs a new physical.
Phil Davis: Suspended 180 days (180 days no contact) for possible broken hand.
Charlie Brenneman: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact) for precautionary reasons -- needs a new physical.
Tim Boetsch: Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact) for left facial lacerations, additional six-month suspension (broken thumb) unless cleared by a physician.
Todd Brown: Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact) for laceration.
Stefan Struve: Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact) for lower lip laceration.
Christian Morecraft: Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact) for eyebrow lacerations, additional six-month suspension (head trauma) unless cleared by a physician.
Ben Saunders: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact) for "hard bout."
Dennis Hallman: Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact) for left cheek laceration.
Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

Thanks for the list.
I’m always interested to see the raw information like this. It’s interesting (to me, at least) that Anderson is the only one who has the ‘neurological’ follow up. Does that mean anything? Or is it at simple as “Anderson got hit more than 250 times in the head. We need to watch him more closely than most fighters due to the historic beatdown.”
If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...
some crazy shit
Silva gets hit 320 times and only gets 45 days for a busted rib and neurological issues
….and Sonnen gets longer for a scrape on his face?
Same crap with JDS….60 days for a skin laceration….while Roy takes the beating of his life and only gets 45?!?!?
That’s some goofy shit!
"Who's da MASTA?!!!"
damn phil davis broke his hand
Did anyone see that fight? I’m guessing it was a dominant wrestling display by davis.
I like wallace but 3 straight losses doesn’t look good for him
Please don't ever let Carwin fight Big Nog! It would result in death
Can't decide who I hate more, Penn or Edgar
Out for 6 months
If my maths is right. That’s a setback for a man on a role at the moment. Hopefully the lay off doesn’t hurt him too bad
Went to my first jits class. Don't think I was ever so happy with getting my ass handed to me
that means he's crazy as a shithouse rat!
Seriously…“Neurological issues” can mean one of two things…Either he’s having an emotional meltdown…..or he got brain damaged like Rocky Balboa. Neither would surprise me since
1) they say the bigger they are the harder they fall, and nobody had a bigger EGO than Silva.
2) Sonnen dribbled his head on the mat like he was auditioning for the Harlem Globetrotters.
"Who's da MASTA?!!!"
6 Months May Be Accurate
The Spider took a beating I have seen few if any fighters take and still get their arm raised in victory. For 4 1/2 rounds he literally got his head kicked in. I think 6 months away from the octagon may work in this case.
NO! "Literally" he got his head PUNCHED in! LOL
Anderson Silva is by far the number one P4P king!!! Even when he is losing a fight he still comes back and finishes for the win! GSP dominates the whole fight and still can't finish! LOL
Totally off topic but
I saw Matt Hamil on my way into work this morning. Thought that was pretty cool.
That would be cool!
Was he jogging or something?

Christian Morecraft (head trauma)????
Perhaps I was a bit hasty in NOT condemning Herb Dean for stopping the fight too late….
Dennis Hallman: Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact) for left cheek laceration.
I don’t know what it is but I laughed when I read this…
Roy Nelson: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact) for "hard bout."
Emphasis on the “hard” part…..LMAO!!
