Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira to undergo hip surgery after withdrawing from UFC 119 main event

Nogueira_medium

The Brazilian tells Tatame.com:

"I hurt my hips training and I’ll have to go on surgery. I’m only depending on a few exams, but I think it’ll be done by the weekend. The surgery will be on both sides of my hips, and I’ll operate my knee too. If everything goes alright I’ll be back on training in four months."

That surgery boots "Big Nog" from his upcoming rematch against Frank Mir, originally scheduled for UFC 119 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The good news is that famed Croatian striker Mirko Filipovic has being tagged as a possible replacement for the Brazilian, who also gets his knee worked on while he's under the knife. "Minotauro" is expected to be out of action for at least four months.

Sucks he's out but...

Mir / Cro Cop is a much more interesting fight to me. Hopefully Nog has a speedy recovery and Nelson can get his wish and secure a match against him.

Yeah my thought exactly.

Just sucks to see Nog out for longer.

Hip surgery? Stick a fork in Big Nog. He is DONE. Thanks for the blood, sweat and tears!

Both sides of the hips and knee... yea it's not looking good at all.

I am gonna go cry somewhere.

This really bummed me out. He’ll be back though, Nog is like Wand. He’ll die giving the people what they want and he wants nothing in return.

i could see nog/big country beiong a pretty good fight. I hope they pair carwin with someone else since nelso is having surgery also...

My thoughts exactly. I thought he was done after the Mir fight personally, this just confirms it. No shame in retiring, he still makes a great coach.

by HappyLittleTreez on Aug 16, 2010 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Many thought he was done. But suddenly he put on a great show versus Couture and his star started to shine again. That’s the business. The current level is high. It’s not the end to lose for Mir or Velasquez.

I just thought he looked done against Mir. Not saying a loss against Mir means your done, just that his body looked done in that fight. Couture is over 40 years old and they went the distance…to me that was a sloppy fight. Couture/Nog wouldn’t be able to handle the up and comers like JDS and Cain. Cain proved that.

i love big nog but this is too much

you know there is a point in a mans fighting career when he should just bow out gracefully instead of pulling a Jens Pulver and lose 7 out of 8,he just needs to stop while he can still walk

that sucks for him. but i agree cro cop an mir is more intertaining

Among two devils… Cro Cop vs Mir is great as an entertainment. Go Mirko! Avoid takedowns and kicks Mir’s head.

Wish he gave more detail on the injuries

4 months sounds minor and if thats all it ends up to be we can be watching NOG and Mir 2 early next year? Here’s to hoping.

Look, injuries are bad but in this specific case I think it's good for Big Nog to come stronger and more prepared for tough bouts.

Sounds like it's time to hang'em up.

I don't get the "Crocop/ Mir is better"...

If Nog really was a week out of the hospital from staph the first time around, this match-up is his proving ground to be top 5 or better (UFC only). Cro Cop will NEVER be top 10 again, let alone going for an actual championship.

If not for hero worship, CC doesn’t get by BARRY for christ’s sake. Mir is going to own CC. This will not be even competitive.

CC might be in the UFC top ten

1) Brock
2) Cain
3) JDS
4) Carwin
5) Mir
6) NOG
7) Roy Nelson
8) Kongo
9) Rothwell
10) Russow
11) Duffee

…never mind top 12
