UFC 119: Mirko 'Cro Cop' vs Frank Mir booked for Sept. 25 with 'Minotauro' Nogueira hurt

Mir-crocop_medium

Looks like it wasn't meant to be.

The upcoming rematch between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir, originally scheduled for UFC 119 in Indianapolis, Indiana, has reportedly been called off after "Minotauro" was forced to withdraw from the Sept. 25 fight card due to an undisclosed injury.

Fighters Only brought word of the change in plans earlier today, and also reports that famed Croatian striker Mirko Filipovic is being tagged as "Big Nog's" replacement.

"Cro Cop" vs. Mir? No complaints here.

Nothing is official at this time, but stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on this developing story as it becomes available.

why does mir look like a fat diego in that pic?

the brockness monster grinds up teenagers and puts them in his protein shakes..and uses razor blades to chop toddlers up into lines to snort like meth...the reason no one can find bigfoot is because the brockness monster found him years ago and now has him in numerous ziplock bags in the back of his freezer...

I got Cro Cop.

He’s gonna punch Mir in the face once and he’ll pack it in. War Mirko. He’s not gonna fake out Cro Cop like he did to Kongo since the croatian still has his sprawl. And it’s not like Mir has a decent double or even single. It’s like all of his subs come off of guys just following him to the mat or just falling down from ahit as opposed to him taking them down.

well out of all those guys who is known for their excellent sub defense.

But nowadays subs are harder off of the back. The thing about mir is that he goes for things as soon as they hit the mat so he catch things early and it’s not even a matter of being supertechnical when he gets things. If fact in his highlight subs, most of the things he gets are never fully locked on but he powers the shit out of them and guys tap quick from the pain. As much as i bash the man gotta give it up to his squeeze.

I will say the same thing I say every Mir fight...

Cro Cop will win this if he makes it out of the first 3 minuits. Mir doesn’t have great TD’s, but I can see him pulling guard and getting somthing in the scramble. Does anyone know Mirko’s track record against south paws? I haven’t seen too much PRIDE other than on the internet and I can’t recall him facing any other lefties.

Age has caught up with cro cop.

Add that to the fact that he is undersized. He fights at around 225 lbs, he should cut weight and fight at LHW, that might give him a better chance of making some noise. Frank Mir is gonna walk in at 250 lbs, in a clinch and ground fight, every pound is important.

Mir should win this easily.

Cro Cop is a shadow of what he used to be. Mir has put on alot of muscle and worked on his striking since his last fight against Lesnar. Mir is going to do to Cro Cop what he did to Kongo; a knock down and then a submission.

I have to give Cro Cop credit for taking a fight against a top heavy wieght.

But I just don’t see him winning. Mir is not some pillow handed pansy like some of you guys are infering. He caught Kongo early in the first round and he knocked out Nogueira, he might not be an explosive striker but he can hold his own against an old man.

He has no upper body movement, his footwork really doesn’t count but for some reason people think good footwork means either hopping around for no reason or constantly switching your lead foot.

His stand up does still suck

I love how people attribute his Kongo win to his striking. He rocked him yes but he didnt knock him out he subbed him and as for NOG well many factors but he is obviously not the man he used to be. Mir thinking his striking was better than it is got him humiliated by Lesnar and Carwin.

Mir needs to do the smart thing and pull gaurd if he can against CC that is a guaranteed win for him against anyone not named Cain, Brock or Shane

by ASR on Aug 16, 2010 8:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm taking Cro Cop

Enough defensive wrestling to avoid Mir’s submission game (yes, I understand it’s dangerous), and Mir is susceptible to striking. I see Mir trying to clinch and Cro Cop pushing him to range and peppering him with strikes.

Noguiera didn’t want his ass beat down just like the last time so he fakes an injury. No surprise, or what if it isn’t fake? The dumb ass has taken so many blows to the head that he might suffer an aneurism just from breaking wind. That’s what happens when your main strategy in the octagon is to beat up the other guy’s hands with your face.

But yeah, he is too cocky for his own good. He needs to work off the other guys weaknesses while playing to his strength. He is supposed to have black belts in Kempo and BJJ but you would know it by the way he fights. His submissions are solid but his striking and grappling aren’t the greatest.

He will never beat Lesnar that way. That is how he got owned in their 2nd fight.

If Mir does win this fight which he should who does he fight then. They are not going to give him someone in the top 5 for beating CC, Nelson maybe? Maybe Carwin although Mir really should not want that. I feel for Mir because he has the ego of a champ and just does not have the physical attributes to get him there in the modern MMA HW stable.

Well he better give Randy Couture a call and learn how to do it.

Just because he doesn’t do it doesn’t mean he can’t. Plus Frank was 255 lbs in his last fight, Mirko was 225 lbs approx, that kind of weight advantage can help you when in a clinch or up against the cage. When push comes to shove, Frank will get the fight to ground when he needs to. It would be moronic to not work on take downs when fighting against a K1 kickboxer.

Mir gonna take down Cro Cop and sub him??

Josh Barnett couldn’t in 3 fights, but Mir who is a terrible wrestler can? I wouldn’t be surprised if Mir backs out of this fight now. And since Randy will prolly beat up Toney without breaking much of a sweat… it may end up being Randy vs. Cro Cop. I don’t want this to happen bec I can’t stand Mir and think he’s 1 of the most overrated fighters of all time, and I’m a longtime Cro Cop fan, but realize he can’t beat any of the top wrestlers or JDS that rule the top of the HW div right now. I’d just like to see Cro Cop get a big win vs. a “name” UFC HW, and I think Mir is tailor made 4 him to KO. Plus, if Mir does get him down? Cro Cop’s BJJ has improved so much over the years and Mir’s BJJ is overrated so I don’t think Mir could finish Cro Cop by sub anyways.

1st off nobody is arguing nog as a top fighter now.. He's obviously not the same fighter he was in pride

2nd what is you deff of top tier?? Cause nog has 32 wins and only 6 losses, and those losses are to guys like Fedor x 2, Henderson, barnett in the pride days… And recently mir and valesquez.

Wins over Dan Henderson, Mark Coleman, Heath Herring, Ricco Rodriguez, Josh Barnett, Mirko “Cro Cop”, Tim Sylvia, Randy Couture, Sergei Kharitonov, Semmy Schilt, Fabricio Werdum, etc…

Your right fights dont lie… Nog in the day was a beast, impossible to finish good boxing and a world class submission game… So what wasn’t top tier about big nog?

Now that you’ve mentioned Nog vs Cro Cop, both said they would be happy with a rematch… Who knows if Nog can survive another year and Cro Cop doesn’t retire, maybe it would be a good fight to watch. What do u think?

Neither is the same fighter from the 1st time they fougt but i still think it would be a good fight.. Who knows how much either guy has left though…. If mir beats mirko pretty bad i could see him retiring.. Would hate to see him go out like that though..

half the guys you named are natural 205 fighters or less in the case of hendo..

semmy schilt has no ground game, and the rest of the wins were not that impressive. i’m sorry, but the guy just doesn’t impress me. mir didn’t whoop his ass because iof staph, mir crushed him because he has more talent.

Then by your account who is top tier?

Is mir?

mir, brock, carwin, cain, jds is on the line, overroids, and fedor.

big country knocks out big nog guaranteed! and i think brett rogers would finish him now also. nog is barely a gatekeeper anymore.

by Conan the Barbarian on Aug 15, 2010 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Again dude were not talking about Big Nog being a top guy right now

Its very hard to argue that he wasn’t a top guy in pride.

And you haven’t, you just say “the rest of the wins aren’t that impressive to me.”

Fedor is the only loss in pride that nog didn’t revenge. And he beat everyone one else! So by your account fedor was the only “top” fighter in pride?

Mir has lost to guys like brandon vera and marcio cruz.. And good guys like brock and shane. And has wins over tank abbot, hardonk, kongo, and a very green brock.. How is that resume better than Big nogs?

give mur a chance. he still has a carreer ahead of him, nog's is finished.

i think brock and shane are two of the best right now so i don’t hold that against mir. i don’t count his wins over bloated lwh/mw fighters as being impressive, no matter how impressive they were at the time. he was good, but hasn’t done squat since coming to the ufc to impress me.

by Conan the Barbarian on Aug 15, 2010 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Your obviously set in your stance so ill just leave it at this

You have to understand time’s change and some fighter’s get better while others fighters fall off.

Of course mir still has a career ahead of him, while mir is only 3 years younger than nog, nog has had 3 times the fight’s mir has.. Those wars add up. Mir has never been in a war, cause his chin cant take the punishment.

And mir lost to cruz and vera in the middle of his career, while the only bad losses in nogs came at the end.

Nog’s a legend and is considered a great fighter by many.. Its safe to say your in the minority with your opinion.

Mir’s losses to Cruz and Vera came after he came back from MAJOR RECONSTRUCTIVE KNEE SURGURY after he was in a motorcycle accident where the doctor told him he MIGHT NEVER WALK AGAIN. I’ll give him a mulligan on those fights considering he is lucky to be able to walk.

Considering the insane difficulty of getting Mirko down

Apparent newfound confidence, and three victories over the similar Josh Barnett, I’m taking the cop by TKO. Mir simply won’t be able to get it to the ground and will get decked by a straight left hand.

i know mirko will be cautious with his kicks due to the danger of a takedown but i really hope he fires those tree trunks of his off. I don’t want him to be so conservative. And Mir’s takedowns are only so/so

since I really wanted to see that matchup. Mir vs. Cro Cop’s gonna be really awesome to watch, though, so I’m not really complaining. Right now, I think Mir can take Cro Cop, but I’ll have to think about that a bit more.

Its a very good possiblity

Lets examine this:

Roy Nelson even though he lost to Dos Santos the fight was hard fought and still shows Nelson is a legit guy.

JDS-Basically is the number 1 contender after Cain becuase, he has nothing to prove.

Cain-Facing broc

Carwin-Hes a fight away but, this steroid stuff may affect how Dana does business with him at this time

Mir is not a draw imo and cro cop is. IF Cro Cop beats Mir i see him facing either Randy Couture (cuz thats a fight Randy’;s wanted) or Nelson i see a shot in his future. And i understand that Cain/Brock are superior wrestlers and JDS beat him soundly but, Cro Cop is such a deadly striker that it is very possible he can stop anyone.

by ThePunisher on Aug 16, 2010 7:37 AM EDT up reply actions

The problem with Cro Cop is he has the same style since his Pride days

Yes he has a strikers chance but how the fighters have evovlved and CC has shown weakness in his game and has not changed I don’t think he will have much of a chance. We should get to see NOG and Mir 2 later in the year

Cro Cop is yet another tragic case

of a well-rounded fighter who doesn’t know he’s well-rounded and relies too heavily on his signature move. If he would just get in there and fight instead of waiting for the opportunity to throw that LHK, he could still be very dangerous. The guy has bricks in both gloves, solid top control, great Jits defense, devastating leg kicks & knees….but he only uses that stuff when he’s caught in a tight spot. Otherwise he’ll circle all night waiting for a chance to throw that high kick.

Other examples of well-rounded fighters who’ve gotten to stuck in one-dimensional habits:
GSP
Rampage
Hendo
Vitor

Page Hendo and Vitor I agree with

GSP is great at takedown and the ground game and no one is able stop him so we don’t get to see the other side becasue he is so effective the other guys you mention have lost or not done as well becasue of being one dimensional.

it would have to put him right behind nelson, or maybe even in front of him, and behind jds, which would be 3rd in line for a title shot. but who knows

Still a solid bout;

I feel almost like 119 is a lackluster card, but thats really just due to the marvellous fights theyve put on arounds it. Oh and unfortunately I definitely see Mir winning this unless CC can quicken his stand up again.
