Alistair Overeem next fight 'hopefully' in October, 'might' fight Bigfoot Silva

Dsc_0854_medium

Props: The MMA Hour

Quoteworthy:

"Fabricio (Werdum) will not be ready until the beginning of next year so I'm not sure who he'll be fighting next because of the time he'll be taking off. Hopefully we'll have Overeem back in the cage in October. Against who, we don't know. It might be 'Bigfoot' Silva [but] the heavyweight division hasn't been determined and we're still having ongoing dialogue with M-1. That should flesh out here pretty soon and once we come to a deal with them on when (Fedor will) fight, who he'll fight, and with Fabricio out, I think the rest of the division will kind of unfold itself before the end of the year. I don't think [Emelianenko vs. Overeem] will happen this year."

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker is optimistic about Alistair Overeem returning this Fall to defend his heavyweight title against an opponent to be named. With Fabricio Werdum on the shelf until 2011 and Fedor Emelianenko hiding behind the iron curtain, the promotion may have few options outside of Antonio Silva. Still, Coker stopped short of naming "Bigfoot" as the next contender but considering the state of the division, what other choices does he have? Winner of Lashley vs. Griggs? Let's hear your solutions, Maniacs.

Though, which one makes more sense

This one or a Fedor fight? Because they don’t have any other HWs. They only have 5 guys on the roster.

Silva it is

Bigfoot is coming off a win and Fedor is coming off a loss, at least that makes more sense than giving a guy who lost a title shot. Silva was the 1st and last EXC 265lbs champion so he’s got some credibility. I wanted to see Alistair vs Fedor but M1 doesn’t want to risk Fedor losing 2 in a row and they’re damaged goods right now. If DREAM had a Heavyweight Champion, I’d say put him against Overeem.

by StealthBomber on Aug 11, 2010 1:23 AM EDT reply actions

The Heavyweights are thin

The UFC has names and they have contenders. The HW division has always been thin in true fighters because, its hard to get legit guys fighting at 265lbs. The UFC had a stable of fights with Mike Kyle, Justin Eilers, Paul Buentello, Andrei Arlovski, Frank Mir and Tim Sylvia..weak i know. The UFC has the elite HW division with Cain.JDS,Big Nog,Mir,Lesnar,Nelson,Rothwell,Gonzaga,Kongo,Mitrione,Schaub..that means not much left out there for Strikeforce. Overeem,Fedor,Big Foot,Werdum,Rogers are the division essentially and we were told that Werdum/Fedor out ofr significant time and Rogers was fed to two elite fighters back-to-back. Big Foot is a good HW who could be a good force in the UFC and has a win. I like it as i think they match up size well while, Overeem kills standing up, Silva has a good ground game and a good chin.

I’ll go back and try and find the interview, but he stated he focused on K1 for the last five years now wants to focus on MMA and that would not be a problem.

He won't come to the UFC because he doesn't want to fight the elite wrestlers at HW.

Though I would definatley pay to see Overeem vs JDS.

I think Overeem would murder JDS

JDS has lost a lot of his mystique for me after failing to put away a static Nelson doing his best impression of a human punchbag.

by attakdog on Aug 11, 2010 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Overeem can be KO, I don't think his chin is as good as Roy's

JDS had what appeared to be a sub par fight with Roy, but Overeem was losing to Buentello in the stand up for the 2 or so minutes of the two round fight it happened and JDS is much better than Paul. But Against JDS OVereem might have the ground tools size and strength to give JDS problems. It would be a great fight and I think not many are giving Roy the credit he deserves the man had AA beat until the ref stood it up and then AA won and this was when AA was on his five fight winning streak that included guys like Rothwell and Werdum.

I think it'd be a good fight

Overeem’s chin is always a bit suspect, but i reckon he’d have too much power and skill standing for JDS. I honestly couldn’t see Overeem being unable to put Nelson away in the same situation.

i think so too

He will only come to the ufc when he has that k1 gp strap. And now this fight is targeting october i rather have him fight in the k1 final 16 than bail out and have him fight bigfoot

in MMA

You shouldn’t have to talk to anyone else to see what fights you’ll be able to put together. This isn’t boxing. In boxing you have several organizations, several promotions and seveal managers. Its understandable why everything has to be worked out. But in MMA, you should be able to say, “this person will be fighting this person on ths date and this person will fight this person on this date”. SF has to ask permission to use their top guy? Embarrassing.

Absolutely

SF looks more and more like a joke. They take themselves too serious. they need to relax, build talent, and in 2 or 3 yrs they’ll be exactly what their name implies. Instead they tried to be UFC-esque right off the bat and are failing horribly.

Yeah good point guys

trying to be like the UFC they are going to fail especially against a org that is as established as the UFC. Put on the Battista and Ashley who cares what Dana says, if Dana say’s anything he really is just giving more exposure anyway. Get rid of the high priced big names and get as many mid level action packed fighters, minus Fedor and Hendo they could get at least 20 good fighters but instead Bellator is getting them.

Plus didn't Karo say they contacted him but he has absolutely no interest in SF?

Bellator is doing a marvelous job and they will soon be surpassing SF. If SF would take their Challenger’s series (or showtimes, whoever the hell it belongs to) more seriously, they could have had a great organization by now. Instead they are pissing these kids off.

Bellator is also signing many prospects and up and comers.

The big names may not be there but the action is and even though the UFC will get some of the proven guys here and there from Bellator but Bellator will sign prospects at a much cheaper cost to move them up.

Bellator doesn’t need near the number of viewers the UFC or SF gets to be successful they just need a loyal fan base that will slowly grow as SF did years ago.

Now Daley is a steal and I think we will get to see him and Diaz go at wich is a fight I'm looking forward too if Diaz keeps it standing?

I'm not saying he will but Daley is a more exciting fight than any fighter he has faced in sometime

Put Daley against Sakurai or Žaromskis I bet Daley wins. Against Diaz standing Daley will do well and is one of the only WW’s outside the UFC that would make Diaz use his ground game.

Control over his athletes?

HE is in no position to do so since going the “national promotion” route…

His HW champion makes the rules due to involvement in K-1
His LHW champion has fought 7 times
His MW champion left for the UFC
His WW champion is a head-case that was cut from the UFC for doing the same shit he does now.
His LW champ prefers to be a big fish in a small pond and is also unsigned.

His top earner insists on co-promotion and will drive another organization into the ground.
His top draw is an old man who wants to be a movie star, not a fighter.
His broadcast partner is a pay network that reaches few American households
His national broadcast partner was disgusted with the antics of his LW and WW champions after an in-cage fight.
His last CBS show was a 3 (ONLY THREE) fight snoozefest that blackened his eye when his main promoted fighter was made to look like the old man that he is (and is alos his #2 earner)

Do you want me to keep going?? Coker is up shit creek without a paddle, canoe and the ability to swim. I would be suprised if Fedor actually fights for them again. Coker can’t afford it.

No Joke. And Bigfoot is No Joke Either.

Look, go watch this guy fight. Maybe Bigfoot isnt Top 10. Maybe he isnt a world beater, but he is a beast. He is something like 6’4 or 6’5. I know he weighs near the 265 pound limit and he has very agile legs. He moves around good for a man of his size and his boxing is very good. Grappling wise he can hold his own too. He did well in a three round grapple fest with Fabricio Werdum.

Overeem has been knocked out in the past and Silva doesnt swing pillow fists. He can definately hurt and wobble Overeem. But then again Overeem could just throw him around and finish him as well.
