Gilbert Melendez wants to prove he's the best lightweight in the world ...

Gilbert-melendez1111_medium

... unless he moves up to welterweight if and when the Strikeforce 155-pound talent pool dries up.

"Yeah I'm a free agent but at this point I already plan on re-signing with Strikeforce. I really believe it goes number one BJ Penn, number two Frankie Edgar and I really believe I'm number three in the world right now. I'm definitely coming for the number one spot but I got a lot to prove. It's gonna be hard because I don't fight BJ or Frankie Edgar so Strikeforce is going to have to come up with some people in the top ten for me to beat to help me prove that. Maybe I'll go up to 170, who knows."

"El Nino" shares his future goals with Heavy.com and it doesn't sound like they include defecting to the UFC like his friend and team mate Jake Shields. Melendez holds the Strikeforce lightweight championship and consistently finds himself among the top five fighters in his weight class. Can he jump to number one without a tour in Las Vegas? And what kind of impact can he make at 170-pounds?

Couldn't agree more.

At least he’s actually admitted to being number 3 (even though he’s not). I remember him actually saying he was number 1 in the world, so basically he’s avoiding people in the UFC because he’s a free agent and is on about fighting Penn and Edgar yet is gonna sign another contract with strikefarce. WTH?

I'm mad

by Scrivs on Aug 10, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Its a smart move for him to sign with strikeforce. He could never be champ in the UFC. So might as well big a big shark in a small pond, than a guppy in a big ass ocean.

Lol nah, personally I’d rather see BJ win.
Gil is Top 10, not Top 3. BJ, Frankie, Kenny and Maynard would all handle him.

I'm going 60/40 with Edgar winning.

I actually think Edgar is too fast and BJ can’t keep up with him plus Frankie gained a lot of confidence with the last fight. However, I won’t be surprised if BJ murders Edgar, just saying I want BJ to fight like we know he can except against GSP!

For Gil to break into the Top 3, he’d need to:

B) One or two of the Top 3 would have to lose their next couple of matches while Gil would have to win his.

His only good fight, outside of the UFC, is Alvarez.

Why would you stay in SF, especially if you are not contractually bound?

As much respect I gained from watching him TOOL Aoki, I just lost from him ducking the UFC. Guys who I believe beat him in the UFC:
Edgar, Penn, Maynard, Florian, George Sot, Gomi and Sherk.

How is that #3 in the world?

I stick by what I said.

Gil has good boxing, good wrestling and…..what else exactly? I don’t think he is superior at anything, which equates to being a very average fighter in the UFC.

Frankie outworks him at all aspects. Bj is better at everything but wrestling, but Gil is not good enough to get BJ down. Maynard GnP’s the shit out of him or blankets him for a UD. Kenny, Sherk and Sot outbox him and Gomi catches him with the big right hand.
