UFC settles with 500 businesses and individuals as part of aggressive anti-piracy effort

1936862_bin_medium_medium_medium

Props: UFC.com

Quoteworthy:

"We are committed to standing toe-to-toe with anyone trying to illegally broadcast or stream UFC events. Today’s announcement further drives home the fact that we are fully prepared to pursue any business or individual that steals our programming."

UFC President Dana White praises his high-powered legal eagles, who have "reached confidential settlements with over 500 businesses and individuals as a result of illegal broadcasts and views of UFC events." It's a staggering statistic more than two years in the making. Piracy is an issue that the promotion clearly takes very serious to protect its brand and profitability. In fact, Lorenzo Fertitta recently sat elbow-to-elbow with ESPN Executive VP Ed Durso to testify at a congressional hearing on the matter, saying that piracy "kills jobs" and "threatens the expansion of U.S.-based companies." Message heard loud and clear. Are you listening, Justin.TV?

piracy will never end…in fact, with all the advancement in technology, im sure rates will steadily increase…not sayin its right…but l torrent a cd here and there..if you really want to support your band, go see them live. And dana…there would probably be less theft if you didnt try to charge 50 bucks for a lame ass main event…..(bisping/evans? bleh) or maybe there would be…who knows…you shut one down…another pops up..only way to end it would be to somehow shut down the internet completely…an that aint happnin

it would be a complete disaster.

the UFC needs to find ways to work around the piracy. I downloaded every event back in the day and up until maybe 2 years ago, only way for me to even watch a UFC event at that time.

Yeah its futile but..

Is it worth it for a bar to pirate UFC events?… probably not anymore… now broadcasting the UFC fights on the internet will be impossible to trace for the smart pirates.

I don’t know if Dana White is a jerk. But he is very cocky. Does that make you a jerk? I don’t believe it does. I wish you had of given some examples as to why you think Dana White is a jerk. It would have made it easier to agree or disagree with you. One thing I do know is that he has taken this sport in North America to the top.

There’s a saying that a wise man named Vince McMahon once said, don’t cross the boss.

Dana White is generally known for making hyperbolic statements, but he might be right on point with what transpired at "UFC 112: Invincible" on Saturday night in Abu Dhabi.
Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting spoke to White after the UFC 112 post-fight press conference and as always, White pulled no punches.
When asked if he felt that UFC 112 was his lowest moment since becoming the UFC president, White quickly responded by saying, "No doubt about it, absolutely, 100 percent."
White left his seat during the 4thRound of the main event and handed the belt to Silva’s manager, Ed Soares, so that he could wrap it around Silva’s waist, since White had no desire to do so after what he’d been watching.
Tonight’s performance reminded a lot of people about what took place at UFC 97, when Silva had an unimpressive title defense against Thales Leites.
Silva’s performance was not the type of first impression that White wanted to leave with his guests in the Middle East. White said that he would have a "private conversation" with his middleweight champ about tonight’s main event.
White also went on to say that Silva "performed like a jackass for five rounds," and was upset that he had to apologize to the fans since Silva was unwilling to.

Dana, bigger companies than you have tried. What most have come to realize is that there will always be more….exponentially more people who will work to get your product for free then there ever will be people who combat it. Not only that but most companies (video/PC game makers I’m looking at you) have found that even though there will always be a level of piracy that when they release A QUALITY FUCKING PRODUCT, it sells and sells well. You are better off putting the money it is costing you combating this shit in to higher quality events, bigger fighter payroll, etc then by trying to fight a battle that you are destined to lose.

Let’s put it like this. If you take every UFC employee on the payroll right now, and ever, and combine that number, you have a fucking small fraction of the people I see downloading the latest UFC PPV torrents at any one time.

I’m sick of hearing that companies pulling resources to combat piracy. PC gamers have gotten bent and screwed so bad by copy protection that in some instances you have to download an illegal crack to run a retail game because the copy protection won’t let you play it if you happen to have two DVD-rom drives because it assumes you are copying the game.

I spend hard earned money to support hobbies I enjoy but god damn it it’s getting to the point where I want to say forget that because I don’t get any value out of my purchases anymore. And when I do make the purchases I have to find out ways to actually make them work.

Dana, here’s how you encourage piracy – Rampage vs. Rashad main even, Rashad vs. Thiago Silva main events, basically every card in the UK, not putting on the matches people want to see and loading the undercard with crap.

Here’s how you encourage people to buy – top tier fighters fighting top tier fighters for title shots regardless of the fact that the loser may no longer be as marketable, putting on multiple top tier matches on every PPV – no god damn Kimbo Slice fights on the main card, and for fucks sake don’t have a PPV every month that I have to shell out $50 for. Less events of higher caliber are a sure fire way to build and audience. If you over saturate with sub par cards you are inviting piracy. Do you think everyone is going to pay $600/year on PPV’s when each PPV has one, maybe two fights that mean something? NO!!!!!

Whatever, I’m done with this crap. Dana, the UFC will be no different then the gaming industry, the movie industry, and the music industry. The more you fight piracy the more you encourage people to pirate because people will see the large, multi-billion dollar company with deep pockets penalizing the working stiff. It is a losing battle. Hell, it’s not even a battle, it’s like euthanizing a cat. The cat doesn’t stand a chance.

those were both basically top contender matches…not every ppv can have gsp vs bj…or brock vs carwin…or tito vs chuck 2…or andy vs sonnen…

you got to have fights where you determine which guys will fight those top guys…

however i do agree that it should be possible to put on a title fight EVERY month…you have 4 title belts….and 12 months…so every title can be defended every 3 months…and most fighters fight ever 3 or 4 months…so there is no reason not to have a title fight every 3 months barring any injuries…so in a sense i do agree with you there…

but rampage is a huge draw, and him and shad was a big fight….

the brockness monster grinds up teenagers and puts them in his protein shakes..and uses razor blades to chop toddlers up into lines to snort like meth...the reason no one can find bigfoot is because the brockness monster found him years ago and now has him in numerous ziplock bags in the back of his freezer...

by HellaHectic on Jul 9, 2010 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah....

You worded my point a lot better. And you have 5 belts to work with, so it should be simple math – every PPV have a title fight, every PPV have a #1 contender fight as a co-main event.

by LowBudgetJeff on Jul 9, 2010 1:23 AM EDT up reply actions

oh yea 5 belts, dont know where the hell i was getting my math from

but yea, when you have 5 belts there is no reason to not have a title fight every month…barring any injuries…i mean gsp and kos neither one had any injuries after their fights with hardy and semtex…so to take such a freaking layoff before their fight is ridiculous…

but i mean you got edgar and andy defending their belts in the same month…and with shogun out and brock having to wait probably 3 or 4 months till fighting cain…and the gsp/kos fight not happening till december….theres no telling when there will be another title fight….so we’re gonna now have several ppvs without any title fights when august is over

the brockness monster grinds up teenagers and puts them in his protein shakes..and uses razor blades to chop toddlers up into lines to snort like meth...the reason no one can find bigfoot is because the brockness monster found him years ago and now has him in numerous ziplock bags in the back of his freezer...

first off

im on JTV and they never show live Zuffa events……..second a zuffa dream team of lawyers aint doing a dam thing thaat people with deeper pockets have been trying to do before the internet was even around. Everyone that watches for free on the internet has 3 really solid sources that all come from the same guy…and what a great guy he is and the others get shitty streams off of atdhe or pay for a stream that is copied from the guy i mentioned before……2 more things. I dont condone people stealing streams and charging people to watch them on there sites..yes its cheaper but it defeats the whole purpose…those guys i dont mind getting caught up……2nd thing i saw Lorenzo at UFN 20 shook his hand and told him good luck with the whole jtv thing with a nice fat smile on my face…..then got free tickets from dana and heard him promote like he always does..but floor seats so fuck it.

I’ve been watching/enjoying mma for a long time now, including borrowing vhs tapes to see old fights when I was in high school. I really love what the sport has become. But i’ll be honest even now from time to time i’ll stream a UFC PPV or a Strikeforce fight. When the UFC was putting on 12 big shows a year, with one or two being free, I could afford $45 for that. I figured it was worth it and my girlfriend and friends had a good time watching all of them. It was an event to look forward to once a month or so. Now they are diluting themselves with too many cards for that price. Believe me, I am not complaining about having too much mma out there. I love that it’s so accessible and constant. The problem is the price. I know they have a contract with DirectTV and other PPV providers, but they need to renegotiate it because paying $45 for a great card on paper is just fine (and yes when you buy it that’s what matters…you wouldn’t buy a $45 TFC card just because the fights ended up being great). But $45 for good fights with little to no relevance isn’t worth it. If they had a staggered price scale for their PPV line-ups, I think they would see a decrease in streaming. Franklin vs Liddell was a good card on paper, but was it really worth the same amount of money as UFC 100 or any card with title fights or relevant big names? The ratio of streaming viewers to paying viewers is likely much higher on lesser cards. I think minor tweaks would ease the streaming problem and increase PPV revenues for lesser cards. Like others have said, you aren’t going to stop streamers all together. It’s just not possible. If they would just lower prices on some lesser cards, the fans of the sport that are willing to pay a fair price would surely reward them. Sorry for the rant

by Steven Abbott on Jul 9, 2010 12:03 AM EDT reply actions

Be careful with the staggered pricing scheme.

They may use that to justify $100 price tag for the huge cards. But generally it seems like a good idea if the average PPV is $25 and then the big cards and year end cards and such are $50. Any business person knows there is a fine line you have to walk with profit and profit margin. You can charge $1 for a can of soda in your vending machine and you will make more per soda. But you will likely sell less soda. Now if you charge $.50 per can you will likely sell more. You won’t make as much per can you sell but I would argue your overall profit would be more. You want to find that ideal number that gives you the most overall profit. UFC should experiment with this model. $50+ per month on top of your cable/satellite/internet is a bit steep.

As stated they will never get rid of piracy but if they just let it pass then it will really start to eat in to their profits. If they can just keep the main offenders at bay that will secure their IP. No need to pursue every rinky dink stream or individual pirate. Dana needs to be careful with his language he sounds like the evil empire when he talks like this. Keep giving away the occasional free card and in the back rooms stomp out the pirates. I remember when the Offspring gave away one of their CD’s for free on the Internet while other bands were seething and fighting downloads with teams of lawyers.

Speaking of pirates I would say if you want to push back go watch all the UFC events at your local bar and bring your friends. Anyone you know that usually buys it, get them to go with you to the bar. You will have fun, won’t have to clean up your house, and all your money will go to beer. A couple pitchers is cheaper than $50! Drink up me harteys, yo ho!

Do not. I repeat, do not, go to mma-core.com. I made the mistake of watching a couple UFC 108 bouts on there and I am still trying to get all the viruses of my computer. Ridiculous! You've been warned.

Futile

You’d think that with all the good the Internet has done for this sport the Dana and the Fertittas would be more open minded towards it.

I get why the music and film industry dont like piracy. It’s not income lost to lost sales, it’s the loss of their distribution network. If everyone uses the internet to get their content rather than tv-networks these massive corporations lose their ability to tell people what movies and tv shows to watch and what music to listen to this week, and what news they are exposed to. That is what they fear the most.

The UFC however, delivers its content by PPV, so I fail to see what they lose by selling non-DRM ( copy protection ) video file downloads from their website. The files are already out there for free for anyone willing to do a google search, but at least this gives people the option to pay for them, especially in countries where the events arent commercially available. They dont even need to give the PPV people their taste.

The days when content providers had the ability to decide when where and how people get their content are almost over. Once people open their eyes to the possibilities the internet has, it will replace tv networks as the primary source of digital content. ( HINT: WDTV Live )

The internet is what has made this sport what it is. Embrace it and adjust your business model, or fight an uphill battle you will NEVER win.

by killscreen on Jul 9, 2010 4:30 AM EDT reply actions

I pay for them all.

What does that make me? I’m guessing a retard or a dedicated fan. I hope it’s the latter but I’m sure some will disagree. UFC cannot be compared to the music and film industry either. They have made themselves extremely successful for decades now and have made trillions upon trillions of dollars and now it’s our turn to take some back from them. UFC is still trying to make itself mainstream and successful(to a degree) and they should have crack at that before we get to steal some of it back. Maybe.

The taste of blood......beautiful.
