Frank Mir's goals for 2011: Retire Big Nog and KO Brock Lesnar

Frank_mir_medium

Props: Las Vegas Sun

Quoteworthy:

"We believe Mir is going to be the guy to knock out Brock Lesnar. Me, GSP, Freddie Roach - we all agreed Mir can do it. We see holes in his game we know we can expose. If you're asking me who would Frank Mir want to fight right now, it's Brock. He'd love to fight him. Realistically, that's not going to happen so we want that Nog fight. Nog claims staph infection affected his chin in the last one. I don't know how that happens, but I think if Mir gets a chance at Nogueira again, he'll knock him out early and retire him. Right now, he's at 252 and his best fighting weight is between 240 and 245 pounds. He's not going to stay at 265 to fight Brock again ... In Mir's mind, it's about martial arts vs. this big gorilla who really is just a big gorilla."

Boxing guru Jimmy Gifford is confident that Frank Mir is going to avenge his loss to Brock Lesnar by knocking him out in a rubber match that may or may not come to fruition. Now that Lesnar has unified the heavyweight titles, Cain Velasquez is next in line as is the winner of Roy Nelson vs. Junior dos Santos. That means Mir has some free time on his hands and it sounds as if he wants to spend it retiring "Minotauro" Nogueira, who claims to have lost their first bout because of the health issues stemming from a long bout with Staph infection. Is Mir on a fool's errand? Or does the former champ still have what it takes to become the best of the best?

First it was "I have to bulk up to beat Brock", now it is "I am at my best at 240-245". Which is it?

He got manhandled by both Brock and Carwin when supposedly in the “best shape of his life”. He has given us no reason to believe that he can be relevant to the title picture EVER again.

First beat a full strength Nog, then the loser of JDS/Roy to prove you even belong in possible contention. Forget about Brock because you will NEVER beat him.

well ulf

i think what mir is trying to portray is that if he can just get into some sort of 235-265 pound range, he should destroy brock, as well as big nog, carwin, jds, cain, big country, the strike force heavey weight roster, any and all comers who would doubt him. jimmy gifford really knows his shit

your given name here

Mir has nothing to offer the top 5. But I would enjoy Joe Silva giving him the chance to prove it and thus grant many their true wish. More of Mir’s blood on the canvas.

He should call out Tim Sylvia.

Mir has talent. He proved it against Kongo and subbing Brock. Mir has a decent chance against any top 5 HW’s in the UFC. How can you say he has nothing to offer? Why dont we cut him and anyone else below him since he sucks so bad? He makes interesting fights. I would love to see Mir vs Cain, Mir vs Dos Santos, or Mir vs Carwin 2.

Mir makes good fights and is a force. End of story. Stop hating.

Mir is good, but he does not now, nor will he ever, have any answer for guys who can take him down and pound on him. He hates that. And that’s exactly what Brock will do to him every time. Carwin too.

Our lives change like the weather, but a legend never dies.

by P-Dub on Jul 8, 2010 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

To Be Fair In The Carwin Fight

He was wobbled and dropped on his feet. He never had a chance to show us if he could do anything vs Carwin. He was already hurt when he turtled. He should have grabbed wrist control along the fence and pulled guard. Mir has it in his head he is a striker. Just go watch the Tim Sylvia fight…. his guard pull was beautiful.

by AintNoSunshine on Jul 8, 2010 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

I think he has talent standing up.

But somewhere in his fight IQ he forgets the grappling aspects of bjj that can be used standing up.

by judomania on Jul 8, 2010 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

thats why I mention his guard pull vs Tim. He could have done similar to Carwin. But he knocked out the “dangerous” striker Kongo and suddenly his head once again inflated

by AintNoSunshine on Jul 8, 2010 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

I am not buying that forgetting stuff. I think size and wrestling are Mir's kryptonite vs. his BJJ.

Okay... you said his kryptonite vs his BJJ

was size and wrestling. Then you said we saw it vs Carwin and Brock. I said Brock yes but in the carwin fight we never saw his bjj vs Carwins size and wrestling.

I Get What Your Saying

but I keep thinking were talking BJJ. We never got to see his BJJ. I would have loved to see him pull guard. I mean thats what that whole concept is for…

sweet overhand left

on a guy whose hand was scratching his thigh. mir is not a force by any means. he puts on good fights, yes, but when i said he was a tool, i was not saying hes a shitty fighter. hes a tool because he seems to obsess over fighting brock and keeps giving excuses as to why he lost to brock. and mirs first win over mir was not exactly a flawless victory

never have any regrets, because at the time, thats all you wanted to do

by child on Jul 8, 2010 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Correction.

He does not make excuses as to why he lost. He admits it was an oversight, and worked to improve it. And don’t discredit his first win against Lesnar. Submission wins that happen in fights in come from behind circumstances are amazing.

im not knocking mir for winning, ive said hes a good fighter, but hes pretty full of him self. i think his losses keep him grounded. and i would love to see him fight big nog again cause i think it would happen the same way things did with lesnar

what does this gif prove?

that mir can throw a knee? at the worst possible time in a fight? and end up helpless against the cage because of it?

or that brock can eat that knee and not evenn wobble a lil bit?

and you do realize that a vicious beatdown of epic proportions was directly after this right?

why did the condom cross the road? it got pissed off...

LOL. I love when people show this gif to favor Mir

if anything it showed his lack of fight IQ. Question… where do you NOT wanna be vs Brock. Answer the ground. So while one leg is trapped by Brock why would you throw up the other knee basically conceding the takedown plus great position for Brock. So basically it was all or nothing trying to KO him and how many times has this move worked for anyone in the past?

mir mentioning brock's name is his only ticket to remain relevant and is a fucking joke at best

i take it about as serious as if i would hearing matt serra running around saying “im gonna knock gsp out, ive beaten him before and we’re 1-1 against each other and i know i can do it again”

and its about the same as jens pulver going around saying “im gonna go ko bj next year, i see holes in his game and im gonna go ko him next year…we’re 1-1 we need a rubber match”

we would all laugh….

its the same fucking thing…mir is no longer relevant…he has a butt crush on brock and the only way he can stay relevant is to scream brock’s name hoping someone hear’s him..

but its just as much a joke as jens saying he wants a rubber match with bj and serra saying he wants a rubber match with gsp

and you stupid motherfuckers on this site are completely ignorant to think otherwise

the brockness monster grinds up teenagers and puts them in his protein shakes..and uses razor blades to chop toddlers up into lines to snort like meth...the reason no one can find bigfoot is because the brockness monster found him years ago and now has him in numerous ziplock bags in the back of his freezer...

here is a fact

I used to be a giant Mir fan. A true believer in his Cinderella story – Won the belt – crashed his bike – and than fast forward to the Hardonk fight where he claims he’s back.

Mir is a bad winner. And that’s why I don’t like him. I think loses are what keep him human. His head and ego get swollen very easily.

Mir claims there are less than 3 people that can beat him in a fair fight walking the planet. Well.. we know who two of them are… I just think he’s BS when he plays up the whole mix martial arts honor is everything to me… then a win… Frank’s back to being Frank.

Favorite moment of 2010 in a life of frank Mir.

Carwins KO and getting let go by WEC. He was astonished that the WEC no longer required his services.

It's called hyping fights.

He has never been disrespectful to anyone he’s beat. He knows how to trash talk to hype fights. Did he go too far in saying he wanted to kill Brock? Yes.

What I don’t get is what a piece of sh*% Brock is and how much crap he spews but people love him. Even after his whole “I stand before you a humble champion” talk, I still don’t believe him and think he’s a douchenozzle. Much respect for taking a beating and coming back to win though.

See, I don't get that though.

I can’t stand Lesnar because he’s a huge prick and because he gets paid 10 times, let me say that again, 10 times what Shane Carwin got for the same fight. Does he sraw more numbers? Yes. But Carwin deserved more $$.

Mir vs.

Carwin…He gets GNP’d like Brock gnp’d him.
JDS…He gets KO’d like he did against Carwin.
Brock…No need to respond-He hasn’t earned that conversation yet.
Big Nog…is the only Top 10 guy he can beat and even that could go either way depending how Bog comes out.
Other than that we are dipping into the Top 20 to 10 in guys like Gabe Gonzaga-who I think would match up well with him. Gabe has strong MT and Mir has sharpened his boxing, but I think Gabe is the more decorated BJJ fighter and has the advantage on the ground.

You dont know what JDS will do to him. For all we know it can be a gappling-fest

Carwin was supposed to be Cain...

I think Cain would GNP Mir-the way Brock pouned out Mir….IMO anyway…I think JDS just hits so beautifully, that I see Mir eating it. I know him and Brock are 1-1, but outside of the ref. standing them with no warning, Mir was on his way out. Mir didn’t seem very competetive in either of their fights, even though he won the first one.

Shivello "The Voice": That jab is stiffer than a box of Viagra!" and I am still wondering if I heard this one right on Dream 14...."These guys are busier than a cucumber in a women's prison!"

Cain Isnt As Powerful To Hold Down The Hips Of Mir

For one. One of the beauties people missed from that fight at UFC 100 was Brock masterfully did two very critical things. Hip control and isolated arm/wrists. Two crucial parts of sweeping and offensive BJJ. Cain IMO has never shown me his ability to do so.

JDS does hit beautifully. But he also gets hit alot. His striking offensively is amazing. His defensive striking on the other hand is well its lacking. And if Mir can crack the hand dropping Kongo with an over hand he can do the same vs JDS. Its MMA who knows right? Mir could KO JDS as fast as JDS KOs him.

by AintNoSunshine on Jul 8, 2010 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah Mir JDS would be a great match up that could go either way

"Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth - Mike Tyson

by Puck Head on Jul 8, 2010 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

You are right...

Cain has looked amazing as of late and I think with his wrestling, probably on the same level as Brock minus the size, and how sharp he looked in his stand up, I can see it with a TKO Cain win.

As JDS even looked stunned when geting hit? I know his standup is open, but I think speed kills. Mir has a 2 in. reach advantage, but I think that is negated by JDS being 6’4" and Mir being 6’1". You are correct though, Mir could as easily ko jds as jds could ko mir.

I personally really want to see Mir vs. Gonzaga. I like that fight all day. I know Mir is the more successful of the 2 in mma, but Gabe is one of and has always been one of my favorite fighters. Although he has been broken since Randy murderized him.

Mir is top 5

Hey you can say what you want about Mir losing to bigger guys but he can certainly hold his own against other HWs his size (230-245) and has shown so repeatedly.
Hate the guy if want, sure he talks a lot, a lot but still he’s got hands, subs and is well rounded against good guys. He will take out Nog again, Cain and JDS would be interesting and Roy and anyone lower in the ranks like Crocop would likely be walked through.

by Syncro on Jul 8, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

What a flip flopper!

-I felt so weak against Brock, I need to put on a bunch of weight in muscle.
-Oh crap! Shane Carwin still man handled me with all that weight!
-Hey I am going down in size because weight and strength don’t matter just martial arts.

The problem is Brock has a better pedigree in martial arts, and that is because wrestling is a martial art. Is Mir way more well rounded, yes but the best thing Mir has BJJ is not as good as the best thing Brock has, wrestling. The Nog comment is garbage too, I get so sick of the chin talk, I do think it exists and you can loose it but so much of your chin has to do with how you defend and very subtle head movement and etc… and have staff in your leg WOULD DRASTICALLY EFFECT YOUR MOVEMENT!

by AintNoSunshine on Jul 8, 2010 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Well Rounded?

I know people hate to admit this but part of being well rounded is being able to wrestle and defend the takedown. Mir has improved striking but I still do not think it is top notch like JDS or Carwin(who did KO Mir and would do it again). He is great at BJJ, but he realizes after the last fight with Lesnar that it will do him no good. Lesnar controlled Mir’s hips and head whenever they were on the ground and without being able to move like that his BJJ was useless. This is how it would happen again. Mir has nothing for Lesnar, Carwin, or JDS. I think Cain may have trouble with him, but that is a different story.

by ASR on Jul 8, 2010 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

He is NEVER gonna get past Cain, JDS, or Carwin again......

Poor Mir trying anyway he can for publicity…..and taht is using someone’s name, since he will NEVER be in the title picture again. HE cant beat any of the UFC’s top 4….hell, I ’ll bet you taht Roy Nelson beats him ALSO. Big country beat him in a graplling match when Mir had him outweighed.

So good luck Mir, you suck. It is comical he plans on beating someone that is so far past his prime, that Tim Sylvia should of beat him couple years ago.

SO funny that Mir isnt talking about the 4 big dogs in front of him…liek JDS, Cain, Carwin and Brock. He is SO DESPERATE taht he is using Big Nog as a stepping stone. If he had any balls he woudl call out the top dogs, not someone on the way out.

MIR=FAIL of a fighter

But there is nothign better than watching his hamburgered face go out as it is punched into oblivion….IE his last fight with Carwin and Brock

Why rush it if he’s putting on good competitive fights, then if he gets another run at it he’ll have a better chance at actually winning or at least making it a worthy fight.

He acts like he was destroying Lesnar in the first fight, in which I still say the ref saved him and helped him out as he wanted to see Lesnar lose as he was coming from the WWE, and that he didn’t get his ass handed to him in the second fight.

the Mir era has ended...

he had a run where the opponents he faced gave him a HUGE fan boost… but it boils down to
1. Lesnar was so green and got caught (Lesnar was killing him up to that point.)
2. 10 month layoff where people were offended that lesnar got a title shot before Mir got to fight Nog.
3. Mir does the impossible and beats Nog (little did we know how sick Nog was)
4. Mir gets his ass handed to him, but people over look it because of how awful Lesnar acted afterwards.
5. Mir KILLS a fierce looking Kongo, when in reality he’s just… meh
6. The demise of Mir, Carwin lights him up.
7. The bulk up to 265+, cut to 205, fight at 240 – 245 drama… people no longer care.

He should beat NOG again, sick had little to do with it just an after fight excuse to keep his status up and in title contention.

But beating NOG does not mean he should get a title shot NOG himself is coming of a loss. I think Mir coming off two losses will need to win 3 fights before the belt is even in the picture.

You have the pretty much consensus 4 then after that it can be argued Mir is 5. NOG, Big Country would be the other two arguements. Outside the UFC of coarse Fedor would be in the top five. Werdum even though he beat Fedor and is ranked higher I don’t think could beat Mir either.

It's pretty good list I wouldn't argue to much about

Here’s mine based on who I think should have the best chances of winning, not on past wins and losses that the consensus rankings go by just my opinion
1) Brock
2) Carwin
3) Fedor
4) Cain
5) JDS * qustion mark on his ground game, great stand up *
-Above is close and the guys I call elite fighters great battles agaisnt eachother that could go either way below are great fighters that have a chance but I believe are a step below the top five
6) Mir * solid fighter that has a chance against the top five but has weakness versus the grapplers
7) Overeem *
have not seen enough MMA to rate in the top five? Would like to see agaisnt a proven fighter but he appears to have great potential to make my top five
8)NOG
9) Werdum
10) Big Country?? If he loses I would like to see him and Kongo go at it? Not sold he is a top ten yet but as good as any in this spot

He needs to get a big bag/dummy and work it with his eyes closed… so he can instinctively tell/guess where his opponents head is to hit. Doing this, he can hit whilst being hit and just use just d1 hand 4 cover.
