Papa Dragon: Lyoto Machida should retire from MMA (Video)
I think it's very interesting considering as a fan I've honestly never been overly impressed with Machida and I know I'm in the minority. But at the same time, I don't quite see how one defeat after going unbeaten for so long is grounds for quitting. what do you guys think, is his dad nuts? My take is simple, losing is just a big a part of this sport as winning is! What's your take?

Looks like drinking piss ....
…. rots your brains . While I’m not a big fan of Lyoto hes got a long career ahead of him and retirement should be the furthest thing from his mind . His pops is out of his mind .

nice find...good vid

So next time FEDOR is kicking your ass, don't be offended or hurt, he may be just trying to tell you he likes your hat.
I don't knwo for sure bu I would assume his reasons are not for Machida not beign able to go on for sometime
But maybe his father feels this has been a negative impact on his life and not healthy for his son?

I hate my work computer it always glitching and causing me to miss letters!
I bet you Machida took losing real hard and his Dad doesn’t think he can handle the stress of MMA?
"Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth - Mike Tyson
i would think
the health issue is more of why he wants his son to retire. he talks about how things get tricky in older age which can make you more susceptible to knock outs and injures.
or ph is right and lyoto is not as mentally strong as we think
never have any regrets, because at the time, thats all you wanted to do
It's probably parental too...
I bet if every parent of a fighter, especially a MMA fighter was interviewed, about 80% would wish another path for there child after seeing them KO’d lifeless on a mat.
Bang the virgins, and defeat the Cults...
i've never been a fan but he's still one of the best with many productive years ahead of him.
would be a shame to see him walk away now…
I like the feeling of hunting down what I feed my family. If there’s a beast out there capable of hunting down Brock Lesnar, he would do it and make me the trophy on his den wall. But the laws of nature dictate that I’m going to be the one who goes into the wild and comes home with the evening’s bounty. - The #1 ranked HW in the world...
Winning and losing is part of any sport. I enjoy watching him fight. But maybe his dad knows something we don’t?
kev and RoB...now there's a tandom...lol

weird, I hate soccer, Tito isn’t so bad. I’ll agree with anyone if I have the same opinion though, I’m equal opportunity!
Kevin - you can say that about alot of fighters. Losing to Shogun via KO is not exactly a harbinger of doom for Machida's career.

didn't say it was OJR
go back way before that. I’ve been saying this since Machida hit the scene. I have no issues changing my stance as you know (I was very impressed with Brock’s come back win), but I just don’t see it with Machida. kinda like how I’m one of the few guys not sold on JDS
I am not questioning your view - I am just curious as to HOW and WHO. Expand on your thoughts. Page? Lil Nog? Wrestling? Etc, etc.

there are better boxers out there than Machida who is a mediocre boxer, there are better wrestlers out there who are stronger than Machida. I personally see Rampage knocking him out, guys like Ryan Bader and Jon Jones could easily give him problems.
I don't see how Rampage
could be a real threat, considering how he was outpointed by Forrest Griffin. The stick and move strategy is Machida’s bread and butter.
considering how he hurt his leg bad in that fight he did well. he scored a knockdown in the 1st rd before the injury and arguably won the fight.
I mean people like to ignore things like that in MMA, just like Cro Cop’s leg injury has been ignored for the past 2 or 3 years since it happened, he twisted his fucking leg horribly against Gonzaga and the amount of damage you take to your body is the reason why all athletes lose it and finally has to retire..
Hurt because griffin made it hurt with that kick
What an absolutely retarded argument that is.
I think the main reason I would pick Machida over Rampage
is based mostly on speed. Machida is many times faster than Rampage, which makes it hard for Rampage to actually connect with Machida. Plus, unlike Shogun, Machida wouldn’t have to worry about kicks ever coming into play.

How many guys does jds have to ko to prove himself to you?
He has absolutely destroyed everyone he has faced without being in trouble once, but I guess this is coming from a guy who isn’t sold on machida so that pretty much explains it.
If he destroys Nelson I'll be sold
I’m sorry I dont automatically like or think they are great when the UFC says so. I’m picking Nelson in their fight. Machida is predictable, a counter striker. A very good wrestler beats him
i think JDS decapitates Nelson (which will set up nelson/mir)
but hes too small for these big, great HW wrestlers.

well, i knew when machida lost it would have a big impact.
because when u have that one style and one strategy it’s like your whole career comes to an end after a loss. The reason why people think Machida is boring is simple, it’s because he’s not good enough to be entertaining.
Entertaining? No, his style is seen as boring and I understand that POV.

yup.
He really hasn’t got the tools to be more exciting, he needs to avoid fighting in a fight as much as possible cause that’s his way of winning. Still though i appreciate him for what he does, his style is unique.
I agree. Brawling does not suit his style. One of the reasons why Shogun got that quick KO. Machida strayed away from his style and paid the price.

yea and shogun forced him really.
Machida didn’t wanna receive the same beating he did in their first fight, cause he was hurt after that fight.
TBH machida fought the exact same way he did when he first started, it was Shogun who made the difference, Shogun came in 10x more aggresive and KO'd machida.
The thing is, Machida is as aggresive as his opponent. He matches his opponents aggresiveness. Shogun is natrually aggressive. Shogun is a fighter that i call a “technical” brawler. He’s aggresive but very intelligent. I dont think Machida is as smart as Shogun and didnt see the consequences of returning the aggresiveness that Shogun brought to both fights. That is why “i” think he lost the first and obvioulsy the second fight due to trying to match Shoguns aggression. But its part of Machida’s style and it will “never” change.
Shogun>Machida no matter what. Shogun is to Machida as Anderson is to Franklin

I disagree with this. Machida clearly went to initiate a knee and got countered as a result. Machida has always been a counter striker/opportunist. Also, I have to see a 3rd match before I declare Shogun > Machida. They are 1-1.
"I am giving up booty for the chance to touch Brock's sword...I shoulda listened to Ulf.
by OJR on Jul 7, 2010 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions
he did land the knee.
then went on to try his patented left hand with his chin up in the air as usual. Shogun saw it coming and he already knew it was coming so he countered him.
Shogun beat Machida up in both fights real bad and he countered Machida perfectly in both fights, Machida is simply not as good standing up as Shogun is and his techniques does not match up well with Shogun’s.
He landed the knee and got countered as a result. Exactly. If he lands the knee as a counter he scoots away and avoids a Shogun strike. Anyway, you make a good argument but I have to see a trilogy to be convinced of Shogun's dominance.
"I am giving up booty for the chance to touch Brock's sword...I shoulda listened to Ulf.
The first fight was a draw at worst and a win for Rua at best
I no longer subscribe to judges scoring, it’s as random as the weather.
If you think Machida won the first fight then fair enough, i know I didn’t tho

I had the 1st fight as a draw. If the judges gave it to Shogun I would have been ok with it.

well his strategy was working
To an extent…he technically won vs shogun the first time..it looked like he totally abandoned his usual methods in fight number 2

but not really.
you know ppl easily forget that these guys aren’t robots but real persons, Machida took a beating in their 1st fight and got injured. He had to change something and with Shogun being even more aggressive in their 2nd fight we got the expected ending i think.
Machida’s Father doesn’t care for money or fame. Karate for him and fighting is something spiritual. I understand he wants his son to stop because he won the most important title of the sport. I’m sure Lyoto will come stronger even to prove his father he is a great fighter and balanced man.

5 or 10 Years??
I agree with ANS that your post is spot on. If you think about it, when your father says that Spirtually it might take you 5 to 10 years to recover??? Papa Urea is either setting a trap for Machida’s next opponent or he is saying that Machida is out of balance and not quite the same. I think that would be Rocky 3.

Lyoto has 2 fight Rampag, bones before he retires!
I think lyoto can smoke every1 at 205 besides shogun. I think his pops duznt want karate diminishing with another lyoto loss.

eh
there isn’t any style that hasn’t been beaten anymore. Wrestlers, BJJ guys, Sambo guys, boxers, Muy Thai dudes- they all eventually lose in mma. That is what is so great about this sport. As much as we all argue about puffed up records, this is not boxing.
"We fight, get beat, rise, and fight again."
Ya but if the biggest karate fightr ever in the ufc starts losing no1's guna want 2 learn karate anymore.
I think lyoto can still come back strong as all hell & wreck almost every1 at 205.

Never! Lyotos 1 of my fav's.
I’m talikng about his pops. I think he’d rather lyoto retire on a high note. I can’t wait 2 see lyoto fight again. Hopefully against page.

that would be a fun fight
and one in which page would lose, again.
"We fight, get beat, rise, and fight again."
To a lesser degree we'd still have GSP to represent karate.
It’s not the center core of his game anymore since he made wrestling and BJJ the better part of it but his Karate skills play a useful part in his game.

His dad's a very high degree black belt,
so he’s talking out of karate professionalism, and love for his son. Do I agree? No, I think Machida has lots in him; do I think his fathers crazy? Not at all. Its a different lifestlyle that he lives, as a karate master, rooted in tradition and cultural methods. Your misunderstanding, or ignorance, makes him crazy. I would be displeased if Lyoto retired though, he’s a great fighter.
so is the hip thing these days is to announce premature retirments?? Fedor, Machida. These guys have many more fights left in them, they should not think about retiring.
Shogun will have the longest championship reing in the UFC
Awww, poor baby loses one fight and now his pops wants him to quit.
Come on Machida, be a man and make your own decisions.

I can gurantee you it has nothing to do with him losing in a sport sense
But everything to do with a father ensuring his son’s health mentally and physically.
man i never knew that new yorkers were such pussies..god what a bunch of bitches
people from the north like to laugh at us in the south when we complain about the cold….but now they get a little heat wave they turn into a bunch of whiney little cunts “like omg its so like 100 degrees outside…we’re like omg gonna like so melt…its like omg..SO hot outside…like omg omg”
turn on the news and all you see is cnn interviewing citizens of new york about the “heat” and they’re crying and whining…
i live in the south bitches…quit acting like whiney little cunts…we be in the 100’s with high humidity all the time down here…go find a swimming pool…thats how we roll..we get in the pool or the lake…we dont cry…
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA we live in new york and the heat is killing us WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Haha!!!
