UFC 116 fighter salaries and paydays for 'Lesnar vs Carwin'

Ufc81-bonus_medium

The official fighter purses for those who competed at UFC 116: "Lesnar vs. Carwin" this past Saturday night (July 3) from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, were released earlier today by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

As expected, main event participant and UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar was the big earner of the night, banking $400,000 for his submission win over former Interim titlist Shane Carwin, who collected only 10% of Lesnar's purse at $40,000.

Former Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 1 contestant Chris Leben also had a big night (and a big month), pulling in a sexy $86,000 for his submission win over Yoshihiro Akiyama ($45,000). Not far behind him was fellow TUF 1 star Stephan Bonnar, who pocket $50,000 for stopping Krzsyztof Soszynski ($10,000) in their main card rematch.

Here is the complete list of UFC 116 payouts:

I've always been a fan of Leben,

but was very much pissed when he took steroids against Bisping especially since I am from the UK, but even so I am still a fan. He has improved a great deal, but as good as he is, the only advantage I see him have over Kos, is still going to be a harder jaw and an edge in punching power. Kos could take Leben down at will and punish him on the ground, Leben would not be able to submit Koscheck in the same way he subbed Sexyyama, because Kos would never make those sort of mistakes. He would outstrike Leben, not with soft punches either, and he would have more in the gas tank as well. Kos just has more ways of beating him. Lebens sub was a good one, but he would not have got away with that with too many top level fighters fighters.

that fight would go the exact same way

and have no implication to either future, imo.

by kevjack115 on Jul 6, 2010 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

he made

100K in bonuses
approx 170K in winnings
75% of that is around 200K
totalling 470K PLUS what Dana gave him!!!!!

100k plus 170 is 270

so if that 25% of what he made, the other 75% would equal an additional 750k, no? I’m not saying he made a million, but I’d say between 500k and a million. ANS said the purse is about 25% mac. did I explain it good, I’m even confusing myself. lol

Well He Probably Wont Get a Pay Day Like This Within A Month Span.

But it depends where his priorities lay. Didnt you see he wanted to be on TUF as a coach? Clearly, he wants to get paid. But they work together. Big wins = bigger fights which if you win allow you to get a bigger contract. If he was lucky his next fight is his last and his per fight money will go way up.

by AintNoSunshine on Jul 6, 2010 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

90% of Fighters Who Arent Brock, BJ, GSP, Anderson, Chuck, Rampage, ETC

Rely on the sponsor money and for the most past get their living through them. Guys like George S. got paid under 25k in fight purse money but for every sponsor you saw on his shorts and shirt was paid anywhere between 3k to 10k to do so. Add it all up and there you have the true money that fighters live off of. Of course GSPs Under Armour/Gatorade stuff is much much larger then any of that the guys who arent so popular and lucky will get most of their money from sponsors. I know full tilt gives out about 8k a standard sposnorship. Same for Heavy Hands.

by AintNoSunshine on Jul 6, 2010 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

ye but at the same time sponsors arent exactly gonna throw a bunch of money away on guys who are never on televised cards

the whole point of sponsorship is to promote their product..and a fighter who doesnt make it on tv or ppv it doesnt make much sense to invest a lot of sponsership money in them sense they arent exactly promoting your product….

cant promote it if no one sees you

the brockness monster grinds up teenagers and puts them in his protein shakes..and uses razor blades to chop toddlers up into lines to snort like meth...the reason no one can find bigfoot is because the brockness monster found him years ago and now has him in numerous ziplock bags in the back of his freezer...

Not True. Plenty Of Guys Not On Televised Card

get good sponsors. Its the name value and who you know effect. Politics if you will. And UFC undercard guys always have that chance to make it on the televised portion. Companies may want to spent 8K on undercard guy in hopes he makes it instead of 20K on a guy on the main card. Saves money. Also not to mention undercard fighters still make the DVD and our seen by thousands in attendance.

and Leben pays for trainers, nutritionists, massage therapists, the like. Wether he writes these off through his gym or his personal corporation is anyone’s guess, but he has expenses.

Also, there is licensing, insurance, travel (above UFC stipend).

by Ulf Murphy on Jul 6, 2010 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

what travel above UFC

and ur right, EVERYTHING they do, right down to groceries is a write off. shit, I wrote off 60k in charitable contributions last year, if I’m doing it than these independent contractors are doing it. For example, mania can write off PPV’s as a business expense

by kevjack115 on Jul 6, 2010 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

bro

you can write anything off. I went from owing over 5k this past year (forgot exactly what it was) to getting a few hundred back. Been doing it for yrs. Bring a pair of old sneakers to a salvation army or any second hand store. they will ask if you want a receipt, say yes. They give you a blank one. Fill it in yourself. Then look up what % of ur income can be given as charity (last year was around 55-60%). Write of the full amount. save the receipts in case of audit

by kevjack115 on Jul 6, 2010 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

55-60!!!!??

wow, you must have had a shit ton of writeoffs. i use the same tax man my pops and uncle use for forever. get a few hundred, owe a few hundred.

i need to change that!!

I Doubt Leben Pays His Fight Purse Towards His Gym

His gym profit should be adequate. Maybe he puts in here and there but nothing huge. And also UFC probably covered his licensing, insurance and travel for this fight completely since he stepped in and fought on very very short notice and basically saved the co main event

Pennies?? Remember this doesn't show everything the UFC gives them and this is even stated by the fighters
Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include fight bonuses, sponsorships, percentages and other unofficial payments. It also does not include deductions for expenses such as insurance, taxes, etc.

Carwin gets much more than 40K from the UFC and stated this. How much more I don’t knwo but he was happy with it?

I think it is hilarious when people bitch about this kind of thing

What the F do I care? Honestly? They make a good living, most of them, better than what I make. You hear this in all sports. Why do I care how much Lebron makes? Brock? Shane? Someone, explain this to me? Why should I effing care?

Understand why Lesnar misses UFC?
Shane Carwin deserves a heavier income.

He Will Eventually. Unfortunately Shane signed a long deal

to assure himself in the UFC. Like I said the UFC will say hey you wanna be in the big leagues. You answer yes of course. They figure if you develop nicely they have a great prospect. So they sign a long deal for minimal money before your name is well known and boom good business. Big star for under 100K.

by AintNoSunshine on Jul 6, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

how much (or do you know for sure) do you think Carwin cleared total for Sat night? Including bonuses, sponsers, etc

Easily Made 100K. I Know he had some pretty good sponsors

that shelled out more then usual since he was on a HUGE CARD and the Headliner vs THE HUGEST DRAW. Shane benefited largely from fighting Brock. Brock made him a name. If Carwin fights Cain … Cain would get all the attention. Carwin isnt marketable, he is boring he is stiff.
