Monday Morning Black Belt

Wow, What a great event.  I honestly can't remember the last time I felt this satisfied with an event as a whole.  I didn't watch it until almost 1 am, and I didn't doze off once.  Top to bottom it was an amazing show.  The BJJ clinic that was put on in almost every match, with transitions and submission attempts coming from guys like Chris Leben and Chris Lytle was amazing.  Even the three fights on spike that were free were great!

Leading up to the main event I couldn't help but think it could turn into a wrestling match, but then thought I saw no possibility that the fight would get out of the first round.  I had picked Brock to win in the first, but wanted Carwin to knock him out.  Well I got my Brock pick correct and got to see him get beat up in the process.  I had a feeling towards the end of the first round that Carwin may stiffen up.  He had Brock hurt pretty bad and was pounding on pure adrenaline, anyone who's had a huge burst of adrenaline, whether in a fight or a sporting event knows that once that runs out, it takes a while for your body to recover, you stiffen up and can literally barely walk.  Brock showed some great heart and his takedown in the second was text book.  When he got the mount I knew it was over, I don't see anyone getting out of Brock's mount, but the he switched to side mount and the arm triangle.  That submission is one of my favorites, but some people don't realize just how amazingly risky this was. Brock had close to 300 pounds mounted on a drained opponent and gave up position to go for a submission that wasn't guaranteed, possibly burning out his arms in the process.  I was not only happy for him, but impressed in the fashion he won.  If anyone had told me that Brock Lesnar was going to submit Shane Carwin via arm triangle, I would have laughed in their face!

I've heard people chattering about how gracious Brock was post fight and how impressed you were with his attitude, to those of you who think that, you're drinking the Lesnar kool aide now.  He's a "humble champion" followed by "but I'm the baddest SOB on the planet."  Yeah, really humble buddy.  Then there was a brief exchange with Brock, dealing with Trever Whitman slurping his balls.  Now I personally think this Whitman character is very annoying and takes way too much credit for his guys doing well, and gets way too caught up in a fight that he's not involved in, but I thought it was hilarious when he was slurping Brocks balls, Brock says "my pleasure" then turns to one of his guys and gives a look like 'who the fuck was that fag?'  I rewound that part 6 or 7 times to make sure I saw it correctly, and was laughing the whole time.

So Cain Valasquez gets the next title shot huh, and Dana says he wants it to happen soon.  Really Dana, you mean like the end of the year event?  No shit sherlock, it just so happened that this fight took place just in time to get the winner back in for arguably the biggest show of the year.  Cain has zero chance at winning as Brock will come out, take him down and show that even with all his brown pride, Cain is just an undersized, over hyped heavy weight that doesn't really belong in there with Brock.  Thats a tough statement to make considering what all the fighters out there think of Cain, but it just goes to show how dominant I think Brock is.

How could I write this and not talk about Leben.  I wanted him to win, even though I've never been a fan, just for coming out and fighting a highly hyped guy on two weeks notice.  The UFC almost had me with that pre fight snippet and stupid ass entrance for Akiyama, but I didn't waver from my pick.  I'll say this, what a great back and forth battle, and not only that, Leben proved to me he's much more than a brawler.  He displayed some great BJJ skills and I was very impressed.  Calling out Wand and mentioning TUF was brilliant!  Wand is on the shelf for 6-7 months and can easily tape a show and Leben just took two fights, two weeks apart and won them both, he deserves an opportunity to not only coach but to fight a legend.  I could go on for another 1000 words if I wanted, thats how great I thought this event was...have at it maniacs!
