Junior dos Santos: 'My intention is to keep the fight standing' against Roy Nelson at UFC 117
Props: Fighters Only Magazine
Quoteworthy:
"I’ve been training with the Nogueiras here in Bahia. Rogerio (Lil' Nog) was here a little longer than Rodrigo. Demian Maia has also been strong for me and a few more people who came to assist me and my team out here including the Northeast Champion of Jiu-Jitsu who has helped me from the beginning. This week I am doing the final preparation, its time to start winding down and on Saturday I do my last sparring and I'll have to be 100% to do this sparring. Then next week is the maintenance phase of the training. My intention is to keep the fight standing up, because I like the striking and want to use my boxing, which is where I consider myself better and it's where I want to try to surprise my opponent. But if the fight goes to the floor, I'm ready too, because I'm training a lot of Jiu-Jitsu and I'm sure I can still surprise him on the floor as well."
Brazilian powerhouse Junior dos Santos takes on Roy Nelson next Saturday night (Aug. 7, 2010) at UFC 117: "Silva vs. Sonnen," in a heavyweight clash that will likely determine the next division contender. Nelson, who's very skilled on the ground, and perhaps even better at keeping his opponents plastered on their backs, has indicated that he intends to throw leather. However, how long can he last with that gameplan? Or is he just better off seeing what "surprises" dos Santos has down south?

This.
Really Maia has been friends with Big Nog for a long long time. He trains and lived with him in brazil and now exclusively uses their boxing coach for his fights. So technically it’s not black house but Minotauro team that he’s with. Really the situation is awkward for the nogs.

awkward is right
having a guy in your camp who’s a primadonna, who’s a friend to you, but disgraces everything you stand for and disrespects your other friends. tsk tsk. They should take Silva out behind the woodshed and teach him some old-school humility.

This doesn’t sound like a bjj blackbelt.
Using no way as way, having no limitation as limitation.
I think it's just cause he's had so much success standing
So he’s gonna be more confident with that. But I know what ur saying. Most black belts say their gonna take an arm off or something

i think this guy can take any HW standing, and im sure he's decent on the ground.
but im afraid to see what happens if Nelson can get side control on him and use his weight.

I know he hadn't been taking down in UFC, but has he ever been on the ground in the other 6 fights?

This fight isn't in the bag.
And SOMEBODY is gonna get KOd. I think JDS is faster, but Nelson is a sneaky lil bastard and could catch him with an overhand right out of nowhere any time he gets overconfident and lets his guard down. I give Roy at least a 1 in 3 chance of ruining Junior’s night.
it's only logical for JDS to try and keep this on his feet
no one wants to be on their back trying to get that lard-ass off of them. brock would bench press big country through the roof but just about every other heavy would struggle big time getting out form under him including JDS
this fight ends just about as fast as the fight with werdum.
ktfo in under 90 seconds. i don’t usually do this but i got 550 to win 200 on that fight. i don’t like -275 moneylines. the money so far has been coming to big country’s side.
I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. I still will always follow the Mountain West Conference. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez and face the winner of Junior Dos Santos vs Roy Nelson where he will defeat JDS and stake his claim as pound for pound champion. Womens MMA, the next big thing in sports. 5 weeks till the first game of college football. UTAH vs Pitt. September 2nd 2010.

Juniors handspeed will be the difference
He has the reach and speed advantage and will land his combinations before Roy gets the chance to throw his overhand or attempt a takedown. Good to hear that Junior is training his jits with top guys like Maia though it’s his boxing that will win this fight.

wow, I think people forgot about Nelson's ground game
I think he’s gonna just hold Junior down and do what he does best. Why would he want to stand with this guy? Nelson by stoppage, submission, or decision.
have you seen anderson silva fight?
Obviously Roy does not want to stand with JDS… but guess what they start out standing. How many people wanna stand with Anderson Silva? None. So why is he 11-0 in the UFC? Because in order to take it to the ground you have to get a takedown. I see an elbow or upper cut or hook or whatever from JDS in the clinch before Roy can get him down.
and?
Nelson is good at getting people to the ground. That’s my point. Besides I believe that GSP would take down Silva and make his stand up defense look silly, so ya. Besides, Silva’s been taken down before. Not to mention, what does Silva have to do with JDS being taken down? JDS isn’t Silva. Have a nice day.
