UFC Quick Quote: Ricardo Almeida will choke out anyone from Matt Hughes to his own momma
"People say that he’s slowed down—and he’s had some hiccups here and there—but at welterweight he’s really only lost to Georges St-Pierre. His fight with Thiago Alves wasn’t really at welterweight. I’m watching video on this guy and watching his fights and I’m thinking like, what are all of these people watching. It’s MMA; when you win, you’re the greatest and when you lose, you’re done. It just so happens that he has beaten a couple of guys from my team—actually, I felt that Matt Serra won his fight, but hey, I’m biased. I was in the corner with Renzo [at UFC 112] and it was very emotional to see the way that it ended, so I asked Joe Silva for that fight right away and they gave me my wish. It’s just extra motivation, but whether I like or dislike Matt Hughes doesn’t really make a difference. If it was my mother in there, I’d be trying to choke her out and I expect nothing less from my opponent."
-- Ricardo Almeida tells the gang at Tapology that it's nothing personal against Matt Hughes in their welterweight showdown at the upcoming UFC 117: "Silva vs. Sonnen" pay-per-view on Aug. 7 at the Oracle Arena. "Cachorrao" is the winner of three straight, including a submission win over Matt Brown at UFC 111: "St. Pierre vs. Hardy" back in March. His celebration was short lived, however, as his Master and longtime friend Renzo Gracie was stopped by the flinty farmboy at UFC 112: "Invincible" just a month later. Is Almeida the last chance for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to exact revenge on Matt Hughes? Or will the "Big Dog" get housebroken in Oakland?

How is Almeida's striking? I don't remember, all I can picture in my mind are his GG highlights.

not terrible. I believe it's better than anything Hughes will offer.

but with that one trick...
Hughes dominated the division. It seems to also be the trick that GSP relies on to win now too, so I guess it is a good trick to possess.
Hughes also beat Almeida in a submission wrestling match
Almeida has nothing to beat Hughes with.

I hope it didn't cause too much work for you
Since you’ll never get to use it. Hughes has this one in the bag.
Oh, I hope you like pictures of Brock cuz you’ll be wearing one shortly. HAHAHA

I disagree.
Granted GSP may only be using his wrestling as of late, but there is no way that you can argue that hughes’ striking or jui jitsu is on the same level as georges. GSP is a triple threat, hughes is strictly GnP sometimes ending with a sub after his opponent is hurt……………..
O_o
I won't argue about the striking...
But definitely about the grappling. Hughes is a great grappler, at one point the guys training at MFS were some of the best in MMA. Also he has some of the best submission wins in the business…the kimura from half guard against Joe Riggs and let’s not forget that he decided not to break Royce’s arm with that arm bar.
GSP is a great all around fighter but I wouldn’t exactly call him a triple threat…maybe I’m wrong but I don’t remember any one punch KO’s, I do remember RNC and ground and pound TKO’s, but that is very similar to Hughes when he was GSP’s age.
Hughes never did to anyone......
What GSP did Jay Hieron (punches on his feet), Matt hughes (Head kick then elbows) and Jon Fitch is just the toughest man alive. Granted he hasn’t shown one punch ko power, but I doubt his punches taste like chocolate…………..
O_o
If punches tasted like chocolate, I would be a palooka!

Ever see Pulp Fiction?
Travolta calls Willis a palooka at the restaurant. It is where I learned it. Tarantino is a master at bringing the “old” back.

Bruce Willis looks at Travolta like he would eat him for breakfast, but stops because he realizes what would happen if he got up. Classic.

Agreed
Which ever way this goes, the whole “revenge of the Gracie name” crap is getting old. These guys had to wait untill Hughes is on his swan song to finally get the match they want to redeem their name? This stuff is played out. I am now, and have always ben a huge Royce fan, not so much an overall “Gracie lover”, but geez guys, roll with it. Yes, you helped bring one of the most vital aspects to mixed martial arts, and should be respected as much, but you’re not Jedi’s anymore.

Not likely
I can’t see this guy getting Hughes back. Taking an arm or leg possibly but not his back.

he should be much bigger and NOW stronger than Matt. Arm bar is my prediction as well.

Matt Hughes will beat Big Dog.
Matt Hughes was and will be stronger of the two in this fight. 15 minute fight Matt should have no problem getting the takedown avoid submissions and win a decision. Both have horrible striking this will turn into a wrestling match with Hughes having the advantage. :)

All Hughes Here
If BJ Penn, Royce Gracie, Matt Serra and Renzo Gracie all couldn’t use their BJJ to beat Hughes… I don’t see Big Dog doing it.
Give a man to fish and feed him for a day. Kick his stupid ass and maybe he will leave you alone.
BJ subbed him the first time round

What d'ye think Hughes Gameplan will be?
Will he want to mess with the jits of Almeida? I think he’ll try his akward standup for the 1st round and see how it goes from there. I don’t see Almeida getting the TDs at all even though I agree he’s probably bigger and stronger
Dunno who I’m picking yet even though I think Almeida is better, I won’t rule out Hughes grinding a decision
Went to my first jits class. Don't think I was ever so happy with getting my ass handed to me
My thoughts as well.

Hughes already made Almeida tap...
it was at a grappling event years ago. My guess this the gameplan for Hughes will be the same, takedowns and control on the ground, it worked against Serra, Renzo, and it should work to control Almeida’s ground game. I think Hughes is better and will submit Almeida RNC in the second.
Gutsy call
I’ll probably pick Hughes too but with out the finish. Unless Almeida gets gassed. He gassed bad against Cote didn’t he?
Went to my first jits class. Don't think I was ever so happy with getting my ass handed to me
i think he is used to the cut to ww by now
I really didnt see him gassing when he fought brown who ussually fights at a high pace.
I hope he learns how to check legkicks

Hughes beat Almeida at ADCC in 2000.
And he basically did it by taking him down and controlling him. Personally I think it will be a very close fight, but I see it going the exact same way.
That is 10 years ago. I don't think that example holds water anymore being as that MMA involves more options and game planning. I would go by their recent fights.

Totally agree with you, 10 years ago should have little relevance.
I was just stating that I think if Hughes can take him down then, I think he can now. Personally I dont think that Hughes skills have slipped that much, its just that everyone around him is just that much better. G&P is Hughes bread and butter and I dont think he will stray far from it. And even though Hughes isnt ranked, Joe Rogan made the point that he may as well be a black belt in BJJ because he has spent so much time with Jeremey Horn, and has pulled off almost every sub in the book. For those stated reasons, I feel Matt Hughes will win by UD.
Very nice post.

I'm wondering
Does Matt Hughes actually think he has a shot of regaining his belt back or is he just floating throught the division collecting a paycheck until they make him fight Alves, Fitch, Kos….pick one, then decide to retire?
"I'm sorry about my performance tonight... I had sand in my vagina."

i think he mainly will fight for the paycheck
He doesnt want to be a stepping stone, and he is smart enough to understand that he doesnt have it anymore to hang with the absolute top

i dont get people sayin almeidas gona be stronger
Hughes is still a very strong guy, and will def have the strength advantage..not sayin it’ll win him the fight or anything. I’m lookin foward to it regardless

Almeida might be bigger but you're right Hughes should be stronger, I haven't seen anything from Almeida to think his striking will be a an advantage in the fight.
I got Hughes by UD but a submission is a possibility, all the grappling credentials in the world go right out the window if you get rocked by some big shots from the top.

Almeida not Shields real threat to GSP
I think Ricardo is going to dominate Hughes then I would like to seem him fight the Winner of Alves/Fitch for the Number 1 Contender on the December 11th Card. You then have Hardy/Condit winner fight Shields/Kampmann winner to set up next round of WW fights.
almeida-alves def sounds like an interesting matchup

Ricardo Almeida VS Momma Almeida
There is a good chance that this would be more entertaining than the last dozen cards the UFC crapped out.
