Brendan Schaub set to meet Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 121 on Oct. 23 in Anaheim

Schaub-gonzaga_medium

Up-and-coming heavyweight hopeful Brendan Schaub (6-1) will face yet another gargantuan challenger when he collides with Gabriel Gonzaga (11-5) for a super-sized slugfest at UFC 121 on Oct. 23 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

The incomparable "Showdown" Joe Ferraro first reported the match-up earlier today.

Schaub was an early favorite to win it all on the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). In fact, the Denver dynamo plowed through the Spike TV reality show to earn a spot in the TUF 10 Finale last December.

Unfortunately "The Hybrid" saw his hype train temporarily derailed by portly powerhouse Roy Nelson, who went on to win the Finale and earn a spot in the suddenly-crowded heavyweight division.

It didn't take long for Schaub to recover and remind fans why he's such a highly touted prospect, knocking out Chase Gormley at UFC on Versus 1 and then repeating that performance against Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 116 earlier this month.

Star-divide

Trying to stop his ascension will be Gonzaga, whose ship has seemingly run aground after an electric start under the UFC banner.

In fact, after a 4-0 start with the promotion, "Napao" was one fight away from holding the heavyweight strap, until Randy Couture finished him at UFC 74: "Respect" in late 2007.

Since then, the Brazilian Yeti is an even 3-3 inside the Octagon, coming off a first round beatdown at the hands of Junior dos Santos at UFC on Versus 1 last March.

It's make or break time against Schaub.

Headlined by Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez, UFC 121 will also feature the Octagon debut of Jake Shields when he takes on Martin Kampmann.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on this quickly-developing fight card.

very exciting match up

Both guys love to bang. But i hope gonzaga finally understands that his chances of winning will always improve if he will take it to the ground. However i do Believe he can stand and trade with brendan. Joe silva really been on fire lately

Yes thats are very good fight

I believe that is will be a big step up for Brendan. I know he faced Nelson, but we all saw how that turned out. I just think Gabe will be to much for Schaub, and dominate him everywhere.

oh your right

Schaub doesn’t stand a chance, with his hands low chin up fighting style hes gonna get smacked

Gonzaga by submission...

Schaub is not ready yet to face all these experienced fighters

Tough one.

If it lasts longer than 1 round I’d give it to Big Country. Gonzaga’s cardio is shit.

The thing i like about GG is that if the guy doesn't belong in there with him......

it’s always brutally violent the way he gets them out. Against Big Country, i would take GG all day. Like DB says heart/cardio is the only question, but i imagine Roy cant take the leg kicks or the power of his strikes.

Ya exactly

and I also believe that gabe is good enough on the ground that he would never find himself under Nelson

I am really over Gonzaga

I used to think he was real good but he is so wishy washy. He reminds me a lot of Jardine in his career. Got some big wins but can’t stay consistent enough to really matter to the division. Yes I know Gonzaga had a title shot where as Jardine didn’t.

Brendan 1st round TKO, you heard it here first from Roberto’s betting service.

im taking schuab via ko/tko also

gg has not really impressed me as much as he used to (hes lost 4 of his last 7 fights) plus hes already fought carwin who trains with schuab

never have any regrets, because at the time, thats all you wanted to do

Is Gonzaga still with Team Link?!

Could you imagine if this guy would join with Greg Jackson? Dude has the skill to be HW champ. If only someone would explain to him what a gameplan is.

Do not. I repeat, do not, go to mma-core.com. I made the mistake of watching a couple UFC 108 bouts on there and I am still trying to get all the viruses of my computer. Ridiculous! You've been warned.

gameplans are overrated.

if u have enough skill u win if u don’t u lose, there are no secrets to win a fight.

johnny that is robertos way of suckering you into an argument, he goes trolling for those and he has admitted to it..

in all honesty it isn’t GG gameplans that make him lose he kind of gasses easily, he had a great gameplan for beating carwin just kinda got punched real hard

made a bet on mmamania.com with mma guru roy nelson vs junior dos santons, i got roy nelson

by randy murders on Jul 22, 2010 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Lmao

he kinda got punched hard

you can have the best game plan in the world but if you kinda get punched hard you’re screwed

Please don't ever let Carwin fight Big Nog! It would result in death

no johnny you are the fucking loser that tries to act a like a smart ass.

it was obvious that Shogun was the better fighter over 2 fights he had much better standup, there is no way to game plan around that well Machida tried by taking Shogun down but Shogun was too good on the ground as well so why are u trying to act smart and call pure skill “gameplanning” ? Forrest beat Rampage by being a great kicker and hurting him aka being better at something, I don’t think he planned on getting knocked down in the 1st round.

by Johnny WF on Jul 22, 2010 8:10 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I don't really see what he said wrong

I might not agree with ALL of it, but some of that post is pretty sound. Not all fighters plan well or extensively for fights and are very successful. A lot of game planners are guys that want to grind a win out. Nobody really wins by KO when they follow a plan(unless the plan is to keep the fight standing for a KO ala Old Chuck). Fedor’s never tried to shy away from an opponents strengths, he just rolls with the punches.

I just don’t think Roberto is trolling. I think he should have clarified that he meant game planning isn’t needed by everybody.

Roberto has been consistently inane

From the moment I first joined and found him claiming that Evans-Silva should have been a draw.

Plus, a comment up there says he admits to trolling.

And as far as gameplans not producing knockouts, look at Liddell-Evans. The plan was to waot for Chuck to make the scrunchy face and tip Rashad off as to the next punch.

Or Ali-Frazier I. Frazier’s plan was to wait for Ali to drop his right hand for an uppercut and then hurl the left hook. He actually dropped Ali in thr last round.

yea cause any pussy/coward fights 22 times in the UFC over 13 years and still continues after major having had one major back surgery that he fought through for years until he finally had it and 1 neck surgery in 2 years . The UFC and the whole business is being ran by people that promote lies to get hype and money so the whole lying part is getting real old, I would prefer having fun and talking smack to people i don’t even know and making millions in the process over not and just be a poor fighter with a busted up face.

i think gameplans should be created during the rounds than they are the most useful

When you go in the cage with a gameplan and your opponent has a better one to counter yours. And you dont have a plan b you are screwed

But if you just feel out the first tried to figure out what youre opponents gameplan is you can create a gameplan with your coach in between rounds and adapt perfect to your opponent in the second round etc.

So i dont really think gameplans are overrated.i.e as a wrestler you dont wanna stand with a kickboxer your gameplan is to go to the ground

Leg kicks are the most underrated weapon in MMA

Scaubs in for a world of hurt this fight!

I don think either of these guys can be in a boring fight. Some1 getting ko’d for sure. Can sum1 in tell Gonzaga he can go 2 the ground in th ufc =D

by d*locc on Jul 22, 2010 5:35 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Yes he is

and thats exactly his problem. He is the best guy at his, and that is never a good idea. Also, like you were saying he desperately needs coaches that can introduce gameplanning to him.

i'll take gonazaga by 2nd rd sub

I like the feeling of hunting down what I feed my family. If there’s a beast out there capable of hunting down Brock Lesnar, he would do it and make me the trophy on his den wall. Gonzaga's Chin is almost gone

You only get KO’d so many times and it goes bye bye Schaub just has to land something decent and Gonzaga will drop, something hard probably will make Gonzaga go nighty night. Then again maybe he recovers faster then most and will be able to take a decent shot again but eh i dont think so. Schaub hasnt shown anything just yet i definitely wouldnt count him out vs Gonzaga.

If you dont like drugs then dont do them.....give them to me!

Id like to see Schaub at LHW though. He’d have a much better career there IMO.

I hate all these huge camps

It is almost impossible to get a chance to fight in the UFC without being a member of one of these mega camps like Greg Jackson, ATT, AKA etc… The UFC pushes guys to join these camps because they are directly affiliated with the t-shirts and other merchandice. You can tell from the tuff shows that these guys do not no squat about fighting. They have it all wrong. You don’t want a wrestling coach and then another guy for boxing and another for jiu-jitsu and so on. The boxer tells you to stay on your toes, hands up, the wrestler tells you to get low and square up which is the exact opposite of the boxer. Why? Because boxing in mma is 100% different from plain boxing. Wrestling in mma is different than in plain wrestling. You need coaches who have done mma not dudes that teach you things that do not even apply. The only thing dummer than a coach who has never done mma is a UFC judge that has never done mma. Lucky for us the UFC is full of both.

Seems like a big step for Schaub

Will be glad when he gets beaten. A little too cocky for his level of success. This loss ought to knock him down a couple of pegs.

by sudnvictory on Jul 23, 2010 5:43 AM EDT reply actions

Schaub takes this.

Knew he was going to kill Chris Tushy, that guy just plain sucks. The only reason he has a job is because Dana bows down to Lesnar. Gabe just hasn’t been impressive lately.
