Tim Sylvia: I need to beat Paul Buentello to make a statement that I'm back

Sylvia_medium

"In the MMA world, I need to win this fight in fashion to make a statement that I’m back. We were supposed to fight once or twice and now it’s finally going to happen. It’s going to be a great fight and show. Paul’s a gamer. He’s a good striker with a lot of knockouts. He likes to bang, just like me, and that’s what fans want to see."

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia releases a statement in anticipation of his "War on the Mainland" with fellow Zuffa castaway Paul Buentello on August 14 in Irvine. "The Maine-iac" wants to show the world he's "back" by finishing "The Headhunter," a claim he already made after submitting Mariusz Pudzianowski at Moosin MMA earlier this year. How many wins does Sylvia need to re-establish his credibility among the current crop of MMA heavyweights? Is it even possible? Without hating, let's hear an honest assessment of Tim-eh's future in combat sports.

Loser should retire.

Well I guess the winner should also retire.

Brock Lesnar is the #1 P4P fighter in the world. My top 5 P4P list is.
1 Brock Lesnar
2 BJ Penn
3 John Fitch
4 Matt Hughes
5 Matt Serra

Knowing these two, I’m predicting 3 rounds of clinching against the cage with some sloppy brawling here and there.

If He Came Into This Fight

Under 300 and a little better in shape. I will take him serious. If not then he willnever be back. If he doesnt take Buentello serious Paul is just going to outpoint him for 3 rounds.

by AintNoSunshine on Jul 20, 2010 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

So if Sylvia wins then he can position himself for some matches in Japan or possibly Strikeforce. I don’t see him getting back into the UFC since (as of now) he’s not a draw.

Tim needs to start making plans for after his fight career so he can fight for a couple more years and retire.

Sylvia vs. Lashley

When Timmy beats Buentello, he’d be a good fit for Strike Force as a ‘name’ for their up and coming heavyweights (Lashey, Del Rosario,……..uhhh….well, Lashley and Del Rosario) to put on their resume.

Agreed

He is still a former UFC heavyweight champ afterall with a 26 and 6 record. He is still marketable especially to a backbench org like bellator/dream/strikeforce. Hell, we are all still talking about him…

Do not. I repeat, do not, go to mma-core.com. I made the mistake of watching a couple UFC 108 bouts on there and I am still trying to get all the viruses of my computer. Ridiculous! You've been warned.

Without hating, let’s hear an honest assessment of Tim-eh’s future in combat sports.

After three straight back to back finishes at the hands of Big Nog, Fedor, and Ray Mercer, it’ll take more than wins over Pudz and Jason Riley for Sylvia to prove anything. Buentello’s a step in the right direction, but if he’s trying to say he’s top 10 again, the fighters he needs to beat outside of the UFC to prove that he won’t find in Adrenaline, Moosin or Powerhouse.

With a potential win over Buentello maybe he can parlay himself a shot at Strikeforce. Wins over Antonio Silva or Werdum or maybe even Rogers, could go a long way towards validating any claims of his career being on an upswing again, but probably not by much.

Thats about right Hardcase

But the same goes for Buentello as well. I would like to see the winner go to SF and fight Rogers, it would be a good fight for Rogers to bounce back.

by domino effect on Jul 20, 2010 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

The same definitely goes for Buentello...

I imagine there would be a little more interest for Sylvia if he won as he was a former UFC HW champion though, but Buentello could make the same route. Rogers definitely needs a fresh opponent for a comeback though. I’m kind of surprised SF doesn’t seem to be that interested in Kimbo Slice for that kind of a purpose.

by Hardcase on Jul 20, 2010 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

i hate to say it but

if timmay got in shape, i can see him being dangerous to any hw in strikeforce with the exception of fedor or overeem. i dont think rogers is all that good in my eyes.

by Egads on Jul 20, 2010 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

Let’s see how in shape Timmy is before I take him seriously

If he beats Buentello

I think it’s safe to say Timmeh’s got some spark left in his career. I’d like to see him get back into the spotlight, either join Strikeforce or Bellator.

Tim

…you will never “be back”

Shogun will have the longest championship reign in the UFC

by manalito on Jul 20, 2010 12:14 PM EDT reply actions

He needs true commitment

For Tim, he cannot stand still and expect the MMA world to welcome him back with open arms. He lost all their good graces by taking on Mercer at 300+ lbs and getting knocked out. What we have to see out of Tim is dedication to training and to a proper camp, he needs to lose his management team who have only devalued him as a commodity, and he needs to have a true definitive goal. Trust me trying to make people love you is not a goal, it is not tangible, what is possible is a return to the UFC; but Timmy you have to once again take this fight game seriously.
