Jake Shields comes to terms with UFC; Gracie camp promises 'top contender' for welterweight debut (Updated)

Shields-dana-2_medium

It's official (almost).

Former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields (25-4-1) has come to terms with the UFC after getting his release from his contract with the San Jose-based mixed martial arts promotion he's called home since the collapse of Elite XC nearly two years ago.

Shields is expected to finalize his contract next week and will return to the welterweight division against a "top contender" in his Octagon debut, according to the official Gracie Fighter website:

"Jake Shields will be debuting at the 170lbs weight division in the UFC. After careful consideration and consulting with UFC representatives it was determined Jake would be finally going back to his original fighting weight. [His] opponent is one of the UFC's top contenders and will be announced shortly."

After a successful title run under the Pro Elite banner from 2007-08, Shields was picked from the rubble by Scott Coker and Co. following the financial implosion of Elite XC, expedited by Kimbogate on the "Heat" fight card in October 2008.

Star-divide

The Cesar Gracie disciple made his Strikeforce debut against Robbie Lawler in June 2009, strangling the former UFC brawler with a "Ruthless" guillotine just past the two minute mark in the first round of their main event attraction.

Back-to-back decision wins over Jason "Mayhem" Miller and Dan Henderson on CBS would follow, leaving Shields with an option to stay for one more fight or head for greener pastures, depending on the promotion's ability to meet his salary requirements for one last ride.

Able, but apparently not willing.

During his recent negotiations, Shields flirted with the UFC and spoke publicly about his desire to fight Octagon champions Georges St. Pierre (welterweight) and Anderson Silva (middleweight).

He also served as assistant coach to Chuck Liddell on Season 11 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF).

While he competed in the 185-pound class in Strikeforce, Shields is a natural 170-pound competitor and has the flexibility to move between weight classes depending on what opportunities present themselves. For now, he'll concentrate on his longtime goal of facing St. Pierre should "Rush" defeat Josh Koscheck (again) later this year.

In the interim, Shields will be paired up with a "top contender" shortly. Any guesses as to who it might be? Seems like the only available welterweight at this time is the always-dangerous Martin "The Hitman" Kampmann.

Anyone have a better match-up? Let's hear your predictions Maniacs.

The 170 Division Needs Jake Shields

Finally someone to challenge GSP. Kos is no breeze, but Shields would be GSP’s biggest test.

I don't understand why so many people think he isn't ready for GSP

Does everyone think GSP would walk through Hendo? Not saying Shields did, but man, he can handle a big guy like Hendo on the mat, he will be a tough nut for GSP to crack.

He is 100% ready for GSP.

But GSP is fighting in December and there is no way I would want Shields have to wait till March or even longer. So give him a good guy like Kampman as a “warmup” and then the title shot.

definitely

But, both of these boys need to be fighting each other next. Assuming neither of them loses. Ya never know. The best laid plans don’t always come to fruition, particularly in the fight game, ask Elite XC, Affliction and SF.

How is Shields a tough test for GSP?

I don’t think he will be able to take GSP down, and his standup is trash. It would be fun to watch GSP showcase his standup, but I think it would look a lot like GSP vs Fitch.

by LJ. on Jul 16, 2010 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Well For One

HE took Hendos best shots and ate them. And survived. Then he took down and controlled a guy that has fought successfully at 205 pounds. GSPs MMA wrestling is excellent sure but this will be GSPs answer to whether he is too good for the WW division if he beats Shields

by AintNoSunshine on Jul 16, 2010 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

He ate them alright, Shields was out until he face planted on the mat.

He won that fight and I not trying to take that away from him but, let them fight again and see what happens. Honestly I think Fitch is the second best WW out there and I believe Fitch beats Shields.

Fitch Vs Shields

May be happening since were only a few weeks away from the Alves/Fitch Fight. Wouldnt be surprised to see Shields first fight vs the winner of that fight.

by AintNoSunshine on Jul 16, 2010 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Shields vs. Fitch

How is shields better than fitch? or even KOS? Both are more well rounded and better wrestlers. Sure Shields has better BJJ but dude’s got no stand up. He’ll need some stand up to set up a takedown. Even though KOS’s standup isn’t great he can take you out with one punch so GSP has to respect it and KOS is a Div 1 national champ and all american. I think gsp will have his hands full with both kos and fitch next time around unless of course Freddie Roach has a huge effect on gsp’s standup. I say Shields vs. Fitch if he beats Alves. Let them both coach the UF too to build their names up. They both have the same skills and are relatively boring so you don’t want both of them tearing through the rest of the division leaving no one left to fight for the title.

by Shadows and Dust on Jul 16, 2010 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Pretty much agree with all that

Apart from Gsp having his hands full with Kos and fitch. First time he didn’t, cant see second time round being any different.

by attakdog on Jul 16, 2010 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably right...

but i’d like to believe KOS what he said and he was underestimating his wrestling, even though KOS did score a takedown, which is damn near impossible these days, and will come in with a gameplan that could work for him. Seeing GSP with Roach makes me believe GSP is ready for it though and plans on this staying up. KOS will probably get desperate and force a takedown and get knocked out though.

by Shadows and Dust on Jul 16, 2010 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Think he’s out to prove to everyone he doesn’t need to take it to the ground to win and it might cost him.

by Shadows and Dust on Jul 16, 2010 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

Arlovski trained with roach and went too far down the boxing route at the expense of everything else. Hope GSP doesn’t neglect his bread and butter wrestling, coz Kos aint the man to do that against.

by attakdog on Jul 16, 2010 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

GSP Is Not Dumb

Nor are Greg Jackson and Firas. He wont be stand and banging.

by AintNoSunshine on Jul 16, 2010 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Not Dumb

but he sure has a lot of pride and when people say he’s scared to stand and trade and rides out a decision over Hardy by controlling him on the ground, I think he’s going to come out and try to prove himself on his feet. He cares more about being the best at every aspect than any fighter and talks about his legacy all the time so I think he could slip up. Not that KOS is a huge danger on his feet but he could Matt Serra his ass and KOS is a better wrestler. Yep I said it. Now everyone can blast me for it but KOS is better. He over committed standing up last time and GSP made him pay. He’ll need something new to bring this time, and I think his stand up will be it.

by Shadows and Dust on Jul 16, 2010 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

no way

Jake shields is basically a Jon Fitch with better BJJ, hes a boring fighter. he may be able to submit guys over in strikeforce or elite xc but over in the ufc all he will do is lay n pray like jon fitch and ride out to a decision win. theres no way he could beat GSP, gsp’s wrestling is way better and so is his striking

He has a decent shot

Martins grappling is very good and he has much better striking, I just don’t see him being able to defend Jakes takedowns or deal with his top controls. He’s too good to get stopped but I don’t see him having the TDD or guard necessary to beat Jake.

only thing that would make this better

is if UFC resigned Daley and let them have a rematch… ok will never happen but one can dream… imo i dont think sheilds is ready for gsp, i think the likes of fitch and kos will dominate him. Even tho he is a top level fighter i dont think beating on an aging Hendo who struggled cutting weight puts him near the top of the WW food chain

Hathaway did look very impressive against Sanchez, but Stun Gun is no push over. I see Hathaway with a slight advantage, in the fight, and betting wise. Great fight though, two guys who are 4-0 in the UFC going at it. Someone’s 0 has got to go!

Tough fight to call

My gut feeling is that Johns striking and cardio will be enough but Kims judo is excellent and John can’t afford to clinch or grapple with someone as good as Kim. I’ve got Hathaway by decision because I think that Dong will gas and wilt towards the end like he usually does but it could go either way.

The other fights are good but not worth the money alone. Shields-Kampmann would be a perfect main event for this show, Jake gets his debut on Spike, Martin fights in Europe, US get it for free and we get a solid show.
