UFC Quick Quote: Roy Nelson gets Junior dos Santos -- because nobody else wanted to fight him

Dos-muscles_medium

"Anybody that actually follows the sport who actually knows my style and knows what I can do doesn’t underestimate me. I may not be a Greek god, or what people think a fighter looks like, but I’m definitely a fighter. Dos Santos is the pinnacle of guys in the UFC. He’s the number one contender for sure in the heavyweight division. Nobody wants to fight him in the UFC, hence why I’m here fighting him. I pretty much got an email from Joe Silva asking if I wanted to…actually, not even asking me if I wanted to, but telling me that I was fighting Dos Santos next, and here I am."

Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 Champion Roy Nelson tells UFC.com that he drew the shortest straw in the Junior dos Santos lottery. "Cigano" smashed his way to a 5-0 start in the promotion's heavyweight division with a string of impressive performances against the likes Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, Gilbert Yvel and most recently Gabriel Gonzaga. "Big Country" faces the Brazilian for the right to challenge the winner of "Lesnar vs. Velasquez" at UFC 121 in Anaheim. Who ya' got?

cant wait for this one son!

the brockness monster grinds up teenagers and puts them in his protein shakes..and uses razor blades to chop toddlers up into lines to snort like meth...the reason no one can find bigfoot is because the brockness monster found him years ago and now has him in numerous ziplock bags in the back of his freezer...

agreed

I think JDS is going to decapitate Roy, but im pulling for Big Country. How can you not like the guy? I was hoping NOG was going to get Cro Cop because i really want Nelson/Mir.

I agree SCS...I like them both...

They’re both great fighters with seemingly humble personalities. Roy’s interviews are a joy to watch. I’m rooting for both.

Junior Dos Santos!!!

I count as three so +3.. It would be extremely unfair if Junior didn’t get hit title shot when guys like Carwin with a lesser record went on to fight Brock.

Agreed,

But someone who lost his last fight should not get a title shot. Strikeforce is an exception because they lack fighters and the title means nothing there anyways.

right..

but winning 6 in a row takes more work than winning 4, especailly when you’re not fighting neil wain or christian wellisch.

so in a perfect world Junior wins this because this fight is worthless for him and he’s already waited too long.

Cains got a good chance against Brock, he's quicker, a good wrestler, has better cardio and striking

Junior’s a much better striker than Nelson and will catch him with a combo before Roy has the chance to make this a grappling match.

Next fight: Cain vs JDS.

by David W-S on Jul 15, 2010 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Roy vs Junior is one thing...

I agree JDS might very well catch him with his vicious power and speed.

However Cain throws pillows and the only chance he has is to win by decision if he can take Brock down every round and hold him there. That will just not happen.

Bullets dodge Fedor.

by freenow82 on Jul 15, 2010 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

His punching power isn't that bad

It’s improving all of the time as he continues to work on his technique, his ground and pound could do with improving but it’s far more effective than “pillow hands” and anyone who KOs Big Nog clearly has some power in their hands.

by stak on Jul 15, 2010 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Did you see how much Rothwell took?

Got stopped standing cause Cain couldn’t even really finish the job and many called early stoppage.

If Carwin couldn’t finish unloading downwards postured on Brock, then whats Cain gonna do? In fact if I was Brock I would just lie down and have him pillow on me for 5 mins and then destroy in second.

Bullets dodge Fedor.

by freenow82 on Jul 15, 2010 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

He does not need to finish Brock and once he’s busted him up enough the ref will have no choice but to step in and stop the fight.

Cain’s shots are gonna hit much harder than usual cause they are gonna be real clean on a sitting duck, Brock does not move his head and is very slow and robotic standing.

Come at me bro!

Plus I don't need Cain to win by KO or even TKO

just win. And that’s not a stretch. Everyone is comparing Cain to Carwin and therefore comparing their punching power…fallacy.

by Onemansyn on Jul 15, 2010 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Cain actually has cardio so he shouldn't be compared with Carwin at all

Carwin is a powerful guy who has only been able to beat guys quickly, Cain’s a quicker, better conditioned and more diverse fighter. He’s always been overlooked for some off reason and I am convinced that he’s going to make many people look silly for doubting him.

I <3 Dana White, the Ruler and Savior of the MMA World, and will serve his disciple, Synyster, faithfully to the end.

by David W-S on Jul 15, 2010 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Cain has a serious chance of beating Brock David

I’m with you on that. Brock looked AWFUL in that first round against Carwin and I would’ve beat Carwin in the 2nd he was so gassed.

Brock showed he has heart and can take a beating but he also showed that if you can maintain that beating for more than a round you can beat him. The referee would have no choice. His standup is plain rank and Cain is an excellent wrestler which will nullify one of Brocks two big assets which are Wrestling and Size.

Cain FTW

JDS leaves many opening in his aggressive style

Roy Nelson has heavy hands and whips his weight into punches. He can end JDS night in any round. Roys cardio has seemed to be just fine. JDS to me in relatively unknown. We all knows Roys grappling credentials. JDS not so much. We know JDS has some great striking ability. So I think this fight is hard to predict. Conventional wisdom will say Dos Santos will win however Roy Nelson is like the guy thats never supposed to win but does. He has it in him to pull the upset.

Because JDS has three things

Hype. Age. Marketability. Not too mention his hot streak and the fact he didnt have to go through TUF. Oh and how JDS was already in the title picture before Roy had won the show.

But imo I think JDS is the underdog, just based off of experience………..

He lost 2 in a row before going into the TUF house.

And the first of those was to Arlofski on the decline of his career. JDS has 5 UFC wins in a row and has been destroying people really easily. Including Werdum and Gonzaga.

Bullets dodge Fedor.

Arlovski was still

considered a top dog when he beat Roy, and was on a good win streak. If I remember right, Roy actually had him in the dreaded belly crucifix and was grinding on him when the ref stood them up prematurely.

Wide open for a dos Santos uppercut right there

In the bottom clip Nelson left himself wide open, and Struve failed to capitalize.

Roy better take this one to the ground and play to his strength.

by The real Philo on Jul 15, 2010 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

i nthink roy stands long enough to get hit with a belly and face combo

and when he is falling to the canvas he tries to grab a leg and gets uppercutted for the ko.

I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. I still will always follow the Mountain West Conference. by wolfmanshowlforever on Jul 15, 2010 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Why do you think he would stand with him?

On TUF, Nelson underestimated Kimbo, and as soon as he got tagged he decided it was time to take it to the ground. I have to believe Roy has at least as much regard for dos Santos’ striking as he developed for Kimbo’s.

I think Roy either unloads an unexpected head kick, which I believe Junior is susceptible to, since he had no apparent reaction to Gonzaga’s, or he immediately tries to get the fight to the ground.

by The real Philo on Jul 15, 2010 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

okay, nelson goes for immediate takedown. it is thwarted by jds and when nelson gets back up....

he then gets a one two combo and then the uppercut. the only way i see nelson winning is by dq.

Daniel And Roberto...

Jon Jones is gifted. And will be the future. However, we will see mentally where he is at vs Vlad. Vlad makes guys look bad in his fights, the fight will most likely be ugly. He is 22, which is very young to have super stardom on your head. He does things a 22 years old kid does and not what a 22 year old mma prodigy should do. He is still a big kid. Far from where he will need to be mentally to compete vs guys like Anderson, Machida and Rua.

Plus that his striking while very effective and unorthodox still has its holes. Holes Anderson, Machida and Rua and precise strikers would at this point in time exploit.

by AintNoSunshine on Jul 15, 2010 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree, shit I think Phil Davis would beat Mo.

Not to say Mo isn’t talented but he’s a one trick pony and a lack of diversity really hurts your game. Mark Coleman, Chuck, Tito, Quarry, and even Maia are all prime examples.

Great matchup leaning towards Roy

Definitely a tough fight and JDS is the shiiizzznit but Roy matches up with him real well as long as there are no bad standups and they let Roy do his thing(assuming he gets it to the ground) then he should be able to pull it off. Reguardless of who wins its going to be 2rounds at most.
