Freddie Roach: Georges St. Pierre didn’t know much about boxing -- but he absorbed everything I taught him
Props: FightHub.tv (via Bloody Elbow)
Quoteworthy:
"[St. Pierre's] like a sponge, he took in what I taught him and really practiced. He would come back the next day and know the move, I’d say 'You went home and practiced that move all night long' and he would just smile at me. (He's a) great guy; really didn’t know much about boxing per se but ability-wise, he absorbed everything I taught him. He asked me about making an appearance on his (TUF 12) show, he’s a coach I said 'I won’t show them what I showed you!' Working with one of the best guys in the sport, its kind of an honor for me to help guys like that out."
Famed boxing trainer Freddie Roach teaches reigning UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre some tricks of the trade heading into the twelfth season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) opposite number one contender (again) Josh Koscheck. "Rush" has made a mockery of the 170-pound division due to his athleticism and unstoppable takedowns. Will the "Kos" fight unveil a new and improved stand-up attack? Or is striking a luxury that GSP can't afford while trying to preserve his legacy?

damn… you beat me to it. i was gonna say “roach made arlovski the fighter he is today”
I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08
I'm going to start being the BE or KidNate of commenters, I'm just going to copy and paste your comments and say "I agree & Dana White sucks!"
A bet's a bet:
"The #1 Heavy Weight of the World Brock Lesnar!" – "All aboard The Pain Train Chug a Chug a Choo Choo!"
GSP needs to work on his stand up...
cause he looked scared to stand with Hardy. He’ll still never match Anderson.
Anderson Silva haters will be back on his nuts after he gets another amazing KO just like when he embarrassed Forrest like nobody else could. GSP can't even finish people in his own weight division. The only time Andy goes the distance is against a so, so fighter who he either isn't motivated to fight or just toys with them. Get a top fighter in there and watch him get destroyed within 2 rounds. He's bored at MW, get him to LHW so he can take that belt too and let's watch GSP be brave enough to take a fight at MW.
Lesnar isn't the most skilled fighter but until somebody beats him he is the #1 HW in the world. It's obviously not Fedor and sure as hell isn't Werdum!
he almost beat Fedor!
im sure Fred didnt teach Arlovski to throw flying knees
why did the condom cross the road? it got pissed off...
despite the KO.. rd 1 was 10-9 AA...
anyone who debates that is lost in lust w/ Fedor.
but he did KO AA so….
"I heard a loud crackle sound. He did not tap so I thought 'Ok, this match just became a death-fight' and I was going to destroy his leg."
Shinya Aoki on his fight with Kawajiri at Dream 15
round 1 didn't end...
Do you break all fights up in 3 minute intervals and then say who won them? Fedor KO’d him in round 1. So by my standards he won the round.
Bullets dodge Fedor.
lol
i won’t argue.

definately
but arlovski was doign just great
actually right before the flying knee he was seriously close to putting a hurting on Fedor.
then the knee, then sleep;…but before that he had fedor against the ropes landing some great combos
why did the condom cross the road? it got pissed off...
all you guys who think AA was winning that round
just haven’t seen the replays enough. Nothing landed clean except for the leg kicks and that push kick.

I have seen so many fights that alot of them mesh together, minus the really climatic points……….

ANS
the thread is buried deep now, but on the KOTC i had asked about how a fighter could have gotten the nod in the low blow scenario that i laid out from the fights on sat. Do you have any idea or have seen that before??

I Dont Know About The Fight. I Would Have To Re-Read The Post
but if you give me a sec Id be happy to do so.

thanks, im just curious, ill do it for ya save you the trouble
One fight, in which the winner was apparent went to split decision and the obvious loser of the fight got the nod. Could’t believe it, then they announced Cecil Peoples as one of the Judges. Oh and another interesting thing, was that the In ring announcer is the recently cast off WEC announcer (don’t know his name). Anyways back to the fights. One fight between this yoked black dude (fighter A) and an equally intimidating looking mexican guy who i remember name was Paul (fighter B) ended rather odd. Fighter A accidental nutshot to fighter B. B, is either hurt bad or milking to recover as he is taking the full 5 minutes. B at the end of 5 minutes can’t continue (crowed goes crazy) and the bout is initially ruled a Technical Draw. Then after a minute or two, the outcome is changed and it’s announced that since fighter B was unable to continue after the allotted 5 minutes, fighter A has won! I thought it should have been a No Contest? or maybe even winner by dq, fighter B? i don’t get how a fighter wins after his opponent is no longer to continue following an ILLEGAL blow.

Fighter B needs to punch his man card.........
Jk, that seems fucked up to me. o way fighter A should have won. Should have been a dq and fighter B should have gotten the win……..
O_o
That is Weird SouthCali...
however I have seen some weird stuff at KOTC. Knees to downed ooponents are illegal yet twice on one even they ended fights. I have also seen a fight just like this go to the cards after a completely obvious blatant low blow. So who knows really. If i watch the event ill make sure to try and catch it.

I love the
he was close to putting a beating on him line. Close as in, I am going to try to use a flying knee here?
"We fight, get beat, rise, and fight again."
Had He Not We Will Never Know What Would Have Been
IMO.. he could have totally out boxed him while Fedor was cornered in the turn buckles. He could have landed effective blows that entire duration of the round and won it. But then the second round could have ended with Fedor winning quickly so who knows.

He looked comfortable
but that doesn’t really mean much IMO. Results speak loud and clear.

SoCal should change his name to Scoop. Because thats what he does.

Freddie Roach, Freddie Roach, Freddie Roach . . .
- How many people really knew anything about Roach prior to his appearance on HBO’s 24/7 De La Hoya vs. Mayweather Jr.
- Andre Arlovski anyone?
Roach’s claim to fame is Manny Pacquiao. Honestly I don’t really know that much about his training style or history but it is seriously over-blown hype. If I was an MMA fighter, I would reach out to a trainer that has a track record of training boxing champions.

your an idiot.
he trains the best active boxer He helped De La Hoya, who was washed up. DLH should have gotten blown out the water, but instead he went to a split decision w/Mayweather. He is that good of a trainer.
Arlovski loses because he has a glass jaw and does dumb stuff, like flying knees and running straight back. It has nothing to do with Roach.
Apparently training the only 7 division champion in boxing history doesn’t count as training champions.
Good post,
and yeah, he also trains some guy named Ahmir Khan, one of the best young boxers in the world
by theworldismine on Jul 13, 2010 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Think khan's over-rated
He’s eaten a lot of canvas in his short career, they’ll have to keep him well clear out of anyone who can bang that’s for sure. Pity the guy’s so damned arrogant!
I don’t get all the hate for amir, I have been a fan since before his Olympic days and think he is alot better than he gets credit for. The glass jaw thing too I don’t get, u are right he has hit the floor a few times but it has always been from very solid punches and except the Prescott fight he has recovered well each time. I think it’s more to do with his over aggresion and his defence which roach seems to be helping him with. Every single one of my mates would agree with you though attackdog lol
by eagzy on Jul 13, 2010 12:44 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I know people who’ve met the guy and everyone of them says what an arrogant A-Hole he is. I dont think he’s quite so bad now Roach has got hold of him, but before when he was based in Britain, strutting round Bolton like cock of the walk, surrounded by his yes men blowing smoke up his ass, he had a poor image and that’s where a lot of hatred stems from. As he gets older and more mature hopefully he can become a bit more likeable.
khans one of the most overrated boxers on earth
world class handspeed and combinations but a glass chin and a big unwillingness to fight anyone (a)his own size and (b) anyone who can punch.this guys a fraud, hes fighting the winner of diaz/marquez nxt who are way past it and too small we will never see him in the ring with maidana, bradley, alexander etc.people should just boycott his fights, boxing fans sure are dumb to fall for this!
"whats the difference if Bruce Springsteen is his shidoshi?"
Damn, why am I an idiot.
Note, in boxing circles he’s not as highly esteemed as the media makes him out to be. Not to mention there are many more highly accomplished trainers in boxing like Emmanuel Steward.
The hype in my opinion is simply overblown.
DLH should have gotten blow out the water . . . since when? Let’s give DLH some credit here.

I think his hype as an MMA boxing trainer is over-rated BECAUSE he's such a good boxing trainer
but he deserves all his accalades as a boxing trainer. that can’t be taken away from him. He’s trained with champions. THEY sought HIM out before he was a “big star” for a reason.
Doc: You know what they say: People in glass houses sink sh-sh-ships.

Doc: What?

If u dont know much about him why comment like u do?
Roach, since u comment yet dont know much about him…Trains 3 current champs which Manny is the only one that anyone knows or cares about. Not his fault its boxings. He also trains one of boxing’s top young prospects Benavidez. Everyone always mention’s Arlovski, look Arlovshk has hands, its not Roaches fault he has no damn chin. Roach has also helped out Anderson Silva. Now I dont think Roach will really change what GSP does or how he fights but hell it cant hurt. Why all the negativity towards roach?
Note, often when your here a fighter trains with (coach A, B or C) it’s just for a session or two, not an entire camp.
I just have a problem with the hype behind his name . . . it is serious overblown.

Andrei Arlovski is an idiot and fought like it after leaving UFC. See Fedor KO of him.
Roach is actually a pretty good trainer for MMA fighters as far as improving boxing. Anderson Silva trained with Roach. Ditto for BJ Penn and Hardy. He also trained under Eddie Futch.
Vees
Freddie Roach has been a boxing legend for a lot longer than Manny’s rise to fame. The spot light just finally placed on him because Manny relies on Freddie’s guidance so much. Freddie became to Pacman what Mick was to Rocky or Cus D’Amato to Tyson. Right now he coaches champions Pacman, Khan and Strum
Roach was a good boxer. Brawler actually. Which is funny cause he’s so good with helping his fighters with headmovement. He had a good record when Parkinson’s hit and had to retire.

He me not be a great boxer......
but he is the best at humping his opponent’s leg for 5 rounds. GSP by missionary!!!!!
110 u r idiot
I’m sick of idiots like u talkin about gsp and how he just humps out wins. Let’s use his past 5 or 6 fights as an example. Hardy he took down at will and advanced position just about every time. He didn’t finish hardy cause he has heart and wouldn’t tap. Alves I feel was the one guy Gsp was ok to hump as u call it because alves is the only real threat gsp has fved in a while. Then I got bj who he humped yet managed to make him quit on the stool. Fitch look at his face after fight. Did it look like he just humped him? He kneed serra into submission. He made one of the greatest wleterweights of all time verbally tap. Please telle how this is just layin and prayin? U can’t u r a idiot!

fedor tried to lay on someone
and laid right in a triangle choke
why did the condom cross the road? it got pissed off...
Yep Fedor tried to pussy lay on him and got choked.
Shouldv have done what he usually does, posture up and throw down, rinse and repeat. Trying for GSP stuff never goes well.
Bullets dodge Fedor.
haha yeah ask BJ if GSP just pussy laid on him
why did the condom cross the road? it got pissed off...

I can't stand GSP but Freddie Roach might teach
GSP a thing or two bout boxing but do you guys really think he will abandon his gameplan? I think GSP’s wrestling is underated when he’s put up against someone like Kos or Fitch. Because for all we know, GSP is just as good of a wrestler or maybe better?
GSP will only standup if he can’t out wrestle Kos and at that point GSP will outpoint Kos for 5 rounds and prove he might not be a better wrestler but the better athlete. And that we cannot denie.

Freddie is a fantastic boxing coach
4 time trainer of the year, a boxing hall of fame inductee, trained the likes of
Pacman, Jose Benavidez, James Toney, Tyson, Amir Khan, Peter Manfredo, Oscar DeLa Hoya…
He isn’t the best MMA coach, what you learn from him in boxing can be used in MMA. AA tried to Box with Fedor and Rogers.
He did train Tito, but at the same time he trained BJ Penn, Anderson Silva, GSP & Dan Hardy!
i loved the contender series he was in the gomez upset was great
"whats the difference if Bruce Springsteen is his shidoshi?"
Season 1. The only one I really watched
Remeber that emotional black guy that had a wife and a couple of kids that fought? In his prefight interviews, he was saying how important the fight was to his life and family. Then he loses the fight. Then before the credits, the screen goes black and we find out thru text that he committed suicide shortly after returning home.
I AM SOMETIMES BIASED - Get over it!!!!!!!
Give GSP some credit
The kid can stand with out a doubt. His first fight with Kos was majority ground but they did stand in the 3rd and kos got schooled just as bad as he did on the ground. He schooled a taller longer fitch on the feet also and he baits alot of fighters into his wrestling with his stand up.
Fedor "The Last Can Crusher" Emelianstinko finally falls at the hands of a washed up UFC Contender...the Irony:)
Hopefully we see some boxing from gsp this fight!
His last few fights have been some if the most boring title fights I’ve ever seen. & hopefuly kos can keep it standing & make gsp trade with him.

IM PUMPED 4 SHAMROCK!!!! If this fight saturday is half as good as his fight with don frye we r all in 4 a treat..I think if ken wins he can really start thinkin about makin a run at the heavyweight title!!! I think if he got the shot at brock he wuld use his superior wrestling skills 2 beat brock..1st things 1st tho taking care of pedro rizzo

shamrock vs frye war 2 settle the score!!
Dude u culd really sell that fight..I mean that wuld draw huge numbers..maybe the co-mainevent culd be tank abbott vs dan savern..make it a legends ppv..I’d rather c that then bums like anderson silva and guys like that who have no charisma and are def overrated nowadays!!

why do you even want to learn boxing
If you are already learning kickboxing and muay thai. Boxing only uses the hands and head movement. But it doesnt teach you how to set up kicks or knees. I see no point in training with roach if you are a mma fighter, better go to holland and train kickboxing
Leg kicks are the most underrated weapon in MMA

nice
so finally well get to see gsp do something else besides a superman and spinning heel kick before he takes them down and lays on people for 5 rounds sounds like a blast.
the worst
is going to be when gsp takes his next opponent down for 5 rds and doesnt even box.
ill give you a pass as its only your fourth comment 0_o

Or is striking a luxury that GSP can’t afford while trying to preserve his legacy?
This is absurd. You realize He’s the best WW striker, and one of the best strikers in all MMA?

no
it isnt absurd he hasnt cared to show anybody his striking since i can remember he plays it safe nowadays with just taking people down and ground and pounding them for 5 rounds.. then again id play it safe to if i had his type of pedigree in wrestling.
hasnt cared to show anybody his striking since i can remember
You can’t remember the Alves fight? You know, the one which was 51% standup and in which GSP dropped him? There was plenty of striking in the Penn and Fitch fights as well. You really should rewatch his last few fights.
