Strikeforce scraps middleweight tournament; books Tim Kennedy vs 'Jacare' Souza for vacant division title

Kennedy-souza_medium

We don't need no stinkin' tournament.

One of Fort Bragg's finest will try to wear middleweight gold when the hard-hitting Tim Kennedy tests his might against decorated grappling wizard Ronaldo Souza at the upcoming Strikeforce: "Houston" event scheduled for the Toyota Center on Aug. 21 in Houston, Texas.

Kennedy (12-2) elevated his status at last month's "Los Angeles" event with a first round submission win (rear naked choke) over Trevor Prangley. It was the fourth straight "W" for the Green Beret, who is perfect under the Strikeforce banner at 3-0.

But he undoubtedly faces his stiffest test to date against Souza.

Star-divide

"Jacare" (12-2) made a successful transition to the San Jose-based fight promotion following a lengthy run overseas in DREAM. After submitting Matt Lindland at last year's "Evolution" event, the Brazilian scored a unanimous decision win over Joey Villasenor at "Heavy Artillery" back in May.

He's widely considered one of the sport's most dangerous grapplers.

Strikeforce: "Houston" will feature a main event between current light heavyweight champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal in his first title defense against Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante. Lightweight stars KJ Noons and Jorge Gurgel are also scheduled to hook 'em up.

I would like to see a rematch between Jacare and Mousasi.

I know they no longer fight in the same weight class, but now that Mousasi doesn’t hold the belt, maybe they can work something out.

I wonder if they couldn't pull it off...

because of the lack of depth in the rest of their org? I mean, in order to have a meaningful tourney that people pay attention to it would likely need to have a fight every month or every other month. While they may have enough MW’s to pull this off, do they have enough other quality fighters to fill cards around these tournament fights to make it worthwhile for CBS or Showtime? That’s one of the issues of being in bed with someone like these groups.

Otherwise, you’re looking at one card every 3-4 months. With a 16-man tourney (or even 8-man), you’re looking at roughly a year or so (barring injuries and such) to find out who the next champ is.

I said in a post way earlier but i knew they were gonna fuck up the tournament.

How is it that you entire company has only one worthwhile division (coz it’s the only one ith more than 3 people in it) and you still can’t figure out a way to make a simple fucking tournament bracket happen? You’re already paying Cung Le 100K so it shouldn’t be a money issue obviously you don’t have a problem with throwin cash around. I hope jacare loses so that he can jump ship to the UFC and won’t be tied down in this dead end promotion.

btw Jacare UD.

Yes you did and yes they are

They might as well say that they do not have enough good people to fight for the tournament.

wow your both picking kennedy? he should have some nice odds in this one!

I like the feeling of hunting down what I feed my family. If there’s a beast out there capable of hunting down Brock Lesnar, he would do it and make me the trophy on his den wall. But the laws of nature dictate that I’m going to be the one who goes into the wild and comes home with the evening’s bounty. - The #1 ranked HW in the world...

Awesome Fight . . .

I like Kennedy in this fight, his skills and more importantly, attitude are impressive. His confidence is through the roof. I see him taking this one and then moving to the UFC :-)

Bummer.

The tournament was one of the few interesting things on the horizon for Strikeforce. Guess they realized 185 is their deepest (read: most evenly-matched) division and didn’t want to blow their load on all the match-ups over the span of two cards.

hope kennedy wins

was looking forward to tournament a little but no surprise ,also kennedy being a former army sniper badass

Surprise, surprise ...

I also predicted that the tournament wouldn’t pull through because of whatever excuse. I still would have liked to have been proven wrong because the idea was pretty good. Ah, well, Strikeforce continues to impress me less and less every day.

Bad sign for SF

SF is not looking so good lately. With Fedor losing and then M1 trying to strong arm them into an instant rematch, them even talking to Dave Batista, getting Hendo for a load of money and then him not performing, losing shields, and now bailing on the tournament. RIP SF in 2011.

This.

we are watching them commit suicide slowly.

Seriously

It is painful and slow.I think like most MMA fans I just wish they would hear me when I say “why in the hell would you let Brett Rogers fight Overeem” or “why are they acting like Shields has no chance against Hendo”

Just really really bad for both their business and the sport.

At least with James Toney, Dana is openly saying yes this is a side show fight, but we are doing it to teach Toney and the world a lesson.
