UFC 117: Junior dos Santos vs Roy Nelson official for Aug. 7 in Oakland
The list of UFC heavyweight title contenders is about to get just a little bit shorter.
The world's largest fight promotion today officially announced the top contender match-up in the form of Junior dos Santos vs. Roy Nelson for UFC 117, which is set to go down on August 7 from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.
"Cigano" cemented his place among the heavyweight big guns after a string of impressive performances against the likes of former Pride FC star Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic at UFC 103, Gilbert Yvel at UFC 108, and most recently against Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC on Versus 1.
The hard-hitting Brazilian is likely right on the cusp of his first opportunity to fight for a world title. A win over Nelson at UFC 117, making it his sixth straight victory inside the Octagon, would almost assuredly put him over the hump.
"Big Country" endeared himself to casual MMA fans (not really) by pounding out Kimbo Slice during The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 reality show.
After airmailing Brendan Schaub back to Denver at last December's TUF Finale, the portly powerhouse put Stefan Struve on queer street at UFC Fight Night 21 back in March.
If Roy can somehow find a way to put a stop to Junior's meteoric rise up the heavyweight ranks, who's to say that he wouldn't be near a title shot of his own?
UFC 117 is set to be headlined by the middleweight title bout between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen. Also featured will be perennial top welterweight contenders Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves along with another 170-pound showdown between Matt Hughes and Ricardo Almeida.

LOL What a photochop on short notice!
Great matchup. Agree with the Pup across the pond. Was this previously rumored on here because I was pretty surprised to see this announced. Either way I’m hoping the card stays injury free…

Too Short Too Small
Ask Struve how short and small he was. Sure JDS is largely better then Struve but still.
by AintNoSunshine on Jun 9, 2010 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Struve Needs a Boxing Coach, A Good One
But when it comes to being technical sometimes JDS is very sloppy. And Roy is actually accurate in his power punches. I wouldnt be surprised to see JDS lose to Roy by KO
by AintNoSunshine on Jun 9, 2010 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Struve needs to learn to use his length as an advantage.
I just am not sure he gain enough strength and still be able to make 265. He is currently 6’11" and 250 (?) He needs at least 30 pounds of muscle to keep the big boys off of him. I don’t know if he can do it.

He will put the muscle on. Better start now though
by AintNoSunshine on Jun 9, 2010 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions
Agreed
My point was that I don’t see him putting on the necessary muscle AND being able to still make it to 265.
If he doesn’t put on the muscle, he is just tall.

Muscle might be a non-factor here. Pinpoint accuracy and technique with his striking is key. Mir is a good example of muscle not being an equalizer.

But Imagine If Struve could fill out his frame to say 275-280 and have a really good boxing coach. He would be lethal.

Right now in the HW division,
Strength and good wrestling is the key to beating either Brock or Carwin.

Probably because as long as Brock has the title (or Carwin if by some miracle he were to beat Brock) then there is no reason to see Mir against either of them again.

i see this looking similar to Arlovski vs Nelson. Nelson is undoubtedly a good HW, i dont think anyone would argue against that. but i think when he faces top competition with fewer holes to exploit, he comes up short. i look for Nelson to get frustrated on the feet, and ultimately KO’d somewhere in the 2nd.

Brock Lesnar had the easiest road ever both him and Mir did due to their popularity after their 1st fight. JDS, Carwin, Cain have all three done more than Mir and Lesnar did to get to the title that Couture after he too was handed a controversial title shot.
gli azzurri !
Wait, Wait, Wait
Mir, Herring, Randy, Mir is not an easy road. Especially for your first 4 fights. Cain and Carwin smashed lesser talented guys in their first fights. Brock was on Main Stage since day One.

(Day2 since he beat one can before the UFC)
The world is a dangerous place to live - not because of the people who are evil but because of the people who don't do anything about it. - Albert Einstein
it is an easy road, compared to what the other guys have done.
and it’s not even about that, most fighters have to wait so fucking long until they even get the oppurtunity they’re looking for. Brock was thrown in right away b/c they paid him a shit ton of money.
gli azzurri !
Two ways to look at that. Who is to say if they had thrown Carwin or Cain in with those top level guys their first fights if their records would be the same.
I Think No.
I think any Cain and Carwin lose to Mir in their first fight for the UFC. I also think they have tough times with Herring.
by AintNoSunshine on Jun 9, 2010 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions
I am not trying to take anything from either of them because I think they are both deserving of their rankings. Normal big names are usually given talent that is equivalent to their records. When you are 0-0 or 1-0 you are usually given fellow beginners or people coming off a couple losses that are also near the bottom. So you can look at it that Brock was given a title shot right away because of his name or you can look at it that its amazing that he was competitive with those big names so early in his career.
so a title shot for carwin and cain after going 1-1 against those guys?
NO way. Junior beat Werdum in his first UFC fight and he has to sit around and fight guys like Roy Nelson now.
gli azzurri !
Thats True
But we were talking Cain and Carwin I thought

Doesn't look like Herring is even interested in fighting anymore

Think it had more to do with $$
He’s fighting 3-4 times a year not making decent money but not the huge pay days; some people also tend to live beyond their means and if he’s making more $$ outside of fighting, who can blame him .

He should've sold dope imo
He’s a big guy, knows how to handle himself, got the intimidation look going on and no ones gonna try and jack his stash, he should’ve been peddlin pot.

He shouldn't have signed with the UFC if his contract was as bad as he claims
I feel sorry for some guys who are underpaid and underappreciated but Herring ain’t one of them, he’s an arrogant guy who learnt the hard way that he’s no longer top level and sulked his way out of the UFC in response. Let him make his C list film cameos though he doesn’t deserve sympathy or respect for making that decision.

I think he and Rampage are of the same mindset. They are tired of putting their bodies on the line and see the potential end to their careers.

One Mir, No Randy
He fought Mir and LOST the fought Herring and won, then got a title shot. You can’t count Randy, that was the title fight, and you can’t count Mir the second time because that was after the title shot. He had a record of 1-1 in the UFC when he fought Randy for the title.
Cain Is Marketable To a HUGE Market

I like that though
He sets himself high targets and pushes himself to be the best, that’s the sort of attitude that I want to see in fighters. As long as he maintains this motivation Cain is going to continue to develop into a world class MMAst.

JDS is my man!
mainly because my buddies and I made some good coin off him when he came in 5 to 1 underdog against Werdum!
live simply.
i know roy is fresh off his struve destruction
But let’s not forget he was gettin lit up by kimbo before he went for the takedown in rd one…its a looong shot for roy to win on the feet..he needs to get it to the ground asap…doubt he will tho

I wonder how Roy is training for JDS
with Struve he was training with broomsticks as Struve’s arms lol.
I would bring in Aggressive strikers and thats it.
JDS ground game is probably equal to Roys

I wonder if Roy can block JDS uppercuts
with his belly LOL
I doubt JDS' ground game is anywhere close to Roy's
Roy is a grappling wizard, JDS is a brown belt who has never been tested on the ground in a fight.
Bullets dodge Fedor.
JDS has good hip movement during takedowns
but I’m dying to see what he can do off his back. They are two of my favourite fighters and I can’t wait to see how they match up. I’m hoping to see a war between these two
Im pulling for nelson, i like JDS but nelson is the man!

nelson is fighting for all the coach potatoes which are many considering 67% of the country is overweight.
but jds will win by a combo of strikes to the stomach and face of roy “big country” nelson. dreams die hard mr. nelson. man has got to know his limitations. the knockout of struve is the best you are going to do in the ufc.
I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Hell is just a word, the reality is much much worse." Event Horizon". Now remember, when things look bad and it looks like you're not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean, I mean plumb, mad dog mean. cause if you lose your head and you give up then you neither live or win. That's just the way it is. "The Outlaw Josey Wales". To protect the sheep you gotta catch the wolf, and it takes a wolf to catch a wolf. "Training Day". Rashad will beat Rua b/c it's a bad matchup for him. 2/1 odds. Josh Koscheck will dethrone Gsp and win the welterweight title. 2/1 odds on that too.
