WEC 50: Urijah Faber to make bantamweight debut against Takeya Mizugaki on Aug. 18 in Las Vegas

Faber-mizugaki_medium

The upcoming WEC 50 event is already shaping up to be another star-studded show as the promotion is currently assembling a main card fight that includes Urijah Faber (23-4) in his bantamweight debut against the venerable Takeya Mizugaki on Aug. 18 from "The Pearl" at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

MMA Weekly brought word of the pending match-up earlier today.

Faber was recently pushed out of the 145-pound weight class by reigning division champion Jose Aldo. Aside from a Jens Pulver submission win, "The California Kid" dropped consecutive fights to his temporary successor Mike Brown, first at WEC 36 and then again at WEC 41.

His frame may be better served at 135-pounds, but don't expect any liberties from Mizugaki.

Star-divide

The rugged Japanese brawler made a name for himself in his promotion debut, giving then-champion Miguel Torres all he could handle for five rounds in the main event of WEC 40 back in April 2009.

Since that loss, Mizugaki has gone 2-1 for the promotion, defeating Jeff Curran (WEC 42) and Rani Yahya (WEC 48) but losing on points to Scott Jorgensen at WEC 45. A convincing win over a "name" like Faber could possibly get him right back into contention.

WEC 50 is expected to be headlined by current 135-pound champion Dominick Cruz taking on fellow bantamweight all-star Joseph Benavidez.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for future updates on this still-developing fight card.

Man this is a good fight...

But I gotta go with Mizugaki. They both have the same strenghts, Mizugaki is just way more technical.

Agreed. Tough for Faber. This Miguzaki fought very well versus Torres and some folks said he won that fight. After that Miguel went down.

I like Urijah....

He’s a great fighter. But im more jealous of the fact that he can wipe his ass and blow his nose at the same time!

Does anybody remember the interview he did for the Pulver fight? “I’m on the verge of superstardom” lol. He’s gone 3-3 going back to the begining of ’08 and two of those wins were against Jens. I was never a big fan of Faber.

I hear ya..

Yeah he has talent, however he needs to be as big as he his mouth, and his ass chin really is.

by Capnjbrown on Jun 9, 2010 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

And?

He is 3-3 and his losses have come to a KO after a sloppy strike to MTB who became the champ, he lost a 5 round hard fought war with broken hands that he pushed the pace the entire 25 minutes to the current champ once again Mike Thomas Brown and his last loss came to the world beater that is Aldo who nobody has been able to even tough in the WEC. No shame in that. And he beat highly touted Assuncao in between all that

There is some shame in getting knocked out after making a mistake. You can directly blame that loss on his mistake. I mean, if there’s no shame in getting knocked out for making a mistake when is there? Only tapping? I’ll agree with the broken hands fight, no shame in that one at all. Aldo as well, no shame there. I was just pointing out the irony of going losing half your fights in the past 18 months after making a superstar comment. I thought it was arrogant then. To follow it up with a 3-3 record, well, maybe it’s time to make less commercials and train more.

not sure why...

theres so much hate on Faber. Hes only lost to Aldo, Brown, and Griffin. Hes a beast and if Benievedes(sp) doesnt win the belt i see faber reigning over BW the same way he did FW. Nobody at BW should really have much chance honestly.

by blakc_guy on Jun 9, 2010 12:51 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Honestly, I don’t like him because I don’t care for the California Kid stuff. I’m from God damn New Jersey and have no use for pretty boys throwing up hang loose signs and stuff. I’ll always watch him fight, I have no problems with his skill set, but with so many good fighters today a lot of time who you root for might come down to the way the fighter does interviews or where he comes from, etc. It’s not that I think he’s an asshole. That’s my take on the Faber hate anyway.

by Thugjitsu? on Jun 9, 2010 1:00 PM EDT reply actions

Thats understandable...

but to me the CA kid persona os the same type of persona that most athletes have…GSP is the nice guy, jones jones is the humble beast, Carwin is Captain save us from Brock, Mir is a shit stirrer….now i doubt (i could be really wrong) that GSP is that damn perfect, or jon jones is just so humble its sick, or Mir starts shit everywhere he goes. Im from Sacramento and were hours away from a beach or any type of surfing.
