Spike TV presents UFC 113 'Machida vs Shogun 2' to counter program Strikeforce 'Fedor vs Werdum' on June 26

Machida-out_medium_medium

Spike TV is once again hosting a special encore presentation of a recent UFC pay-per-view (PPV) when the cable network goes head-to-head with Showtime on Saturday, June 26 at 10 p.m. ET.

Featuring a light heavyweight rematch between two of the world's top 205-pound athletes, UFC 113: "Machida vs. Shogun II" will counter program the upcoming Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Werdum" event set for the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

In addition to "The Last Emperor," Strikeforce will feature Women's Champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos against Jan "Cuddles" Finney as well as a rematch between former middleweight champion Cung Le and Scott "Hands of Steel" Smith.

Is that enough to outdraw a couple of Brazilians, Kimbo Slice and a Canadian piledriver?

The UFC seems to think so. Here is a list of the featured bouts for Saturday's Spike TV presentation:

Star-divide

205 lbs.: Lyoto Machida vs. Mauricio Rua
265 lbs.: Kimbo Slice vs. Matt Mitrione
155 lbs.: Sam Stout vs. Jeremy Stephens
185 lbs.: Joe Doerksen vs. Tom Lawlor
170 lbs.: Marcus Davis vs. Jonathan Goulet
185 lbs.: Patrick Cote vs. Alan Belcher

This latest counter-programming effort should come as no surprise.

The UFC and Spike aired a special presentation of  "Ultimate Fights" to run opposite the Strikeforce "Heavy Artillery" event from St. Louis back on May 15.

Of course most fans who want to see both cards will DVR one broadcast and watch the preferred one live -- or simply flip-flop back and forth between the bouts that don't hold their interest.

Which one of those descriptions best fits you? Let's hear it Maniacs, what are your plans for June 16?

Sound off!

I'd rather see Machida get KTFO

than Fedor facing his toughest opponent yet!

I think he was only being sarcastic about Werdum being Fedor's toughest opponent to date.

It looks like a shot at Fedor and his hand-picked opponents.

This is what happens when you bet on a loser like Cote, I should have listened to David W-S

obviously yup

any “hardcore fan” (see someone’s fanpost") will be watching Fedor fight live instead of something we can see any day/night on the web.

live simply.

Yes. Also, its just common sense. Why watch a replay of anything instead of a live sporting event? Any category, not just MMA.

Watching Fedor is magic

Doesnt matter who he fights.

It will be spectacular.

by Lester The Pimp on Jun 7, 2010 12:14 PM EDT reply actions

and he's fighting a guy who's very out matched.

I’ll stop short of calling Werdum a can, but god damn this is about as one sided as it gets.

by SHORT_BUS on Jun 7, 2010 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

no

werdum is a decent enough opponent, just look at his goddamn record.

he beat your precious overeem among others.

by Lester The Pimp on Jun 7, 2010 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure he is.

Lemme guess, Fedor fan? If he was fighting a worthy opponent you wouldn’t have to defend him.

This is what happens when you bet on a loser like Cote, I should have listened to David W-S

by jay. on Jun 7, 2010 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Werdum can go into the UFC HW division, and beat any of your favorite fighters!

Official WORLD CLASS JITS
Tough Chin/sturdy dude
Improving stand up
BIG FIGHT EXPERIENCE!!!!

Just cause its Fedor, doesnt mean you gotta Bash Werdum.

Personally, I would give Werdum a good shot against Brock!
He would Crush Mir….those are the last 2 Hw champs for crying out load

Fedor haters would never be happy unless he fights Brock

If he were booked to fight Carwiun, people would complain that Carwin hasnt beaten anyone

If he were to fight Cain, it would be that Cain isnt ready yet….and Fedor is fighting Cans

No one will ever be happy with Fedor’s opponents for one reason, because the mat he doesnt knock people the fuck out on doesnt have a UFC label on it, and isnt 8 sided…..as If I give a fuck!

War GOD!!!!!

i could care less about that strikeforce card at all..call me when they make the overeem/emelianenko fight…then ill tune in….other than that, the hell with fedor he hasent fought anybody worth talkin about in a good few years, hes gettin sloppy…if i dont have nothing goin on that night ill tune in to spike

by Mr.MMA on Jun 7, 2010 12:25 PM EDT reply actions

another typical piece of shit move from dana

i hope fedor retires so that fucking greasy, sweaty, despicable pig never gets the rights to make fedor fight.

by Coach's Corner on Jun 7, 2010 12:41 PM EDT reply actions

Counter programming is a bad move?

He doesn’t want anyone to watch SF, what’s wrong with that? I don’t see you calling Coke a bunch of cock-suckers for competing with Pepsi.

This is what happens when you bet on a loser like Cote, I should have listened to David W-S

by jay. on Jun 7, 2010 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

it is a very good move on dana's part to counter program from a business stand point

especially when spike is in so many more homes than shotime. its a shit move when he plays an entire event that many of us payed 50-60 bucks for (some like it in hd) 6 weeks after it aires.

never have any regrets, because at the time, thats all you wanted to do

by child on Jun 7, 2010 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL at Coach’s Corner crying about this. The “Zuffa is evil” crowd are the same people who were saying that competition is good for the sport when Strikeforce decided they wanted to be a part of the bigger scene. Zuffa counter programming them is competition, you got what you asked for.

As for hoping Fraudor retires so he doesn’t fight under the Zuffa banner….. that’s retarded. You don’t want to see him fight Lesnar, Dos Santos or Velasquez? GTFO

by SHORT_BUS on Jun 7, 2010 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Also read MR. MMA’s post, typical non fan with a big opinion. Seriously, you dont want to see Fedor fight? who doesnt want to see Fedor fight? If your a true fan of MMA then you want to see Fedor.

by HEELHOOK on Jun 7, 2010 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Fedor was beating 300 pounders and no one had a problem with it

Now there’s a 300 pounder with talent and everyone says it isn’t fair? If Fedor doesn’t want to fight big HW’s he should cut 15 pounds and fight LHW.

This is what happens when you bet on a loser like Cote, I should have listened to David W-S

by jay. on Jun 7, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm a fedor fan & I wud luv 2 see him in the ufc!

When has fedor ever bitched about the size of an opponent? NEVER! Or anything?! I think coach means Dana’s a 2 faced slime ball & fuck giving him the satisfaction of having th best fighter of all time. I wana see him in the ufc as much as anybody. He’ll beat them all.

by d*locc on Jun 7, 2010 2:55 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

counter programming is stupid,

Im not going to rewatch a sporting event when I already know who wins. Besides that, Im a real fan of MMA so when there is a PPV event I buy and watch it that night, hell I have UFC PPV parties at my house. There is know way I would watch the UFC over Fedor that night. I dont care who Fedor fights, I want to see Fedor fight. I dont care if its in the UFC either, he is ranked #1 and I want to see him fight, more than anyone else. This whole Strikeforce UFC BS is exactly that…..BS. Your either a fan of MMA or your not. To say you wont watch Strikefeorce because its Strikeforce is just plain stupid.

by HEELHOOK on Jun 7, 2010 12:57 PM EDT reply actions

counter programming is not competition

if they were to hold live PPV events on the same evening, that would be competition.

they fact that they are re-airing a program that many of us paid 60 bucks to view only 2 weeks ago JUST to spite a competitor’s attempt at growing the sport, is straight bull-SHIT.

chances are that i loved fedor before you realized how how much you loved sucking on your mom’s tit.

THAT is why i don’t want to see him used and abused by dana.

I want him retired as a legend, not a punching bag that dana can use to go, “see guys, see.. i told you he was over-rated. Now someone come over here and rub my bald-head.”

let me guess, you love how greg jackson trains his entire camp to employ the dry-hump technique during every fight. winner.

by Coach's Corner on Jun 7, 2010 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Clearly you have no clue as to who fights for or is affiliated with Greg Jackson. You think because he advises GSP and Rashad to use their talents properly that he trains everyone to be ‘dry-humpers’ (that’s called a ground game, but I guess you wouldn’t know that). I’m going to rattle off just a couple of names and you tell me that these guys dry-hump. Nate Marquardt, Shane Carwin, Keith Jardine, Joey Villasenor, Jon Jones, Roger Huerta, Donald Cerrone, Leornard Garcia, Carlos Condit, Melvin Guillard, Damacio Page and Brendan Schaub. Appearently you started watching MMA last week if you think that Greg Jackson’s camp are a bunch of dry humpers.

I cant afford all the UFC ppv's that come out as it is. When affliction was around it was too much

I just think its funny that UFC feels the need to bother counter programming. It’s like a lover who doesnt want you to have any female friends. They just need to relax and realize they are the number one and it’s okay to have fans who take advantage of FREE cards by other organizations. Like Dana wont be watching the strike force card anyways.

I went to 113 so now I get to see it through the PPV eyes (Rogan and HD). Fedor will be PVR’d and maybe watched. Losing interest in his name though. Give me Lesnar vs Oversteem
