UFC ON VERSUS 2 PLAY-BY-PLAY LIVE MAIN CARD COMMENTARY:Druby James here!
Jon "Bones" Jones vs. Vladimir "The Janitor" Matyushenko (205-pound limit)
Round one: Jones takes the center and he has his hands hanging. Both guys miss with body punches. Nice leg kick from Jones. Spinning back kick to the body connects for Jones. Into the clinch and Jones gets a nice takedown. Vlad has his arm tied up here, though, and he's looking for something. Jones frees his arm and passes to side control. Now Jones traps Matyushenko's arm and he's raining down elbow after elbow. Vlad is in big time trouble here as Jones is unloading with devastating bows. That's it. Herb Dean has seen enough punishment and he steps in to save Matyushenko from more damage. Another statement win for Jon Jones on Versus.
Final result: Jon Jones defeats Vladimir Matyushenko via technical knockout (strikes) at 1:52 of round one

Mark Munoz vs. Yushin Okami (185-pound limit)
Round one: Gloves touch and we're underway. Okami has the center of the cage and he's showing his jab, but not throwing it. He's stalking Munoz down and now fires and misses with a left hook. Now he misses with a left to the body. He still has the center and he's still walking Munoz down here, but not much action. Now he unloads with a two punch combo. Munoz eats it and circles out. Munoz fires and misses with a quick high kick. Okami leans in again with another combo that doesn't do much damage. Munoz circles out again. Now he shoots for a single. Okami sprawls and stands. Munoz is back up and Okami misses with a right hook. Munoz leans in with a combo, but Okami shrugs it off. Munoz shoots in quickly again and this time he has more success with it as Okami gets put on his butt. Munoz is holding on trying to hold the Japanese fighter down, but Okami climbs back to his feet somehow. Munoz stays clinched, though, and pins Okami's back against the fence. Munoz looking for a single now. Okami is peppering him with little punches. Munoz lets got of the leg and explodes with a left hook that just misses. They're separated now as Okami circles away. Leg kick from Munoz. Okami misses with a jab and Munoz times a single leg attempt nicely, but Okami defends it even better. A close round ends there. I'd give it to Okami. Munoz had the takedown, but he couldn't keep him there and Okami was better everywhere else.
Round two: Okami takes the center right away and starts walking Munoz down. One-two combo from Okami. Nice body kick from Munoz. Okami leans in with another combo, but Munoz uses the opportunity to shoot for the takedown. Okami sprawls nicely and they're back up. Munoz explosed with a wild right hand, but Okami avoids it. Okami stalks Munoz into the cage and they clinch momentarily before separating. Munoz connects with a left hand then right hand that drops Okami. He looks okay, though, and scores a takedown as Munoz rushes in to finish. Munoz right back up and he's looking to tee off on Okami again. Okami looks like he's in trouble, and Munoz connects with another hard right hand. Munoz shoots in and Okami sprawls. Munoz is latched onto his leg as Okami is trying to free himself with hammer fists. Okami stands, but Munoz is still hanging onto his leg. Now Munoz has both legs and finally gets the takedown as the round ends. All Munoz there.
Round three: Okami runs out for round three. He starts off much more aggressively with his punches here, swinging wildly. Munoz shoots, but Okami sprawls and gets separation. Nice jabs and combinations landing for Okami here and Munoz isn't doing much more than covering up. Okami continues to walk forward. Munoz with a half hearted takedown attempt, but Okami easily sprawls and defends it again. Okami walks him into the fence and starts teeing off with more punches. Munoz is covering up again and now they're in the clinch. Okami now has a single leg attempt. Munoz defends it and they separate. Munoz misses with a right hand. Now he shoots, but gets nowhere with a single. Okami circles away. Munoz leans in with an overhand right, but Okami times a counter perfectly and Munoz buckles. Okami rushes in but Munoz grabs on for a single leg attempt to avoid the punishment. Okami stands and they're back on their feet. Munoz swings wildly and misses. Munoz's eye is bleeding now. Okami with more combos as he stalks Munoz down. Nice jabs followed up by a straight left hand from Okami. Munoz shoots again and again Okami sprawls and defends it. Munoz with a double attempt now, but Okami defends it again and continues to work punches and hammer fists as Munoz isn't doing much but holding on. Big John wants some action. Munoz tries to explode back to his feet, but he can't get there. The fight ends there. That round was all Okami, but this is anybody's fight depending on how the first round was scored. It's going to be an interesting decision.
Final result: Yushin Okami defeats Mark Munoz via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
-end-
Jake Ellenberger vs. John "Doomsday" Howard (170-pound limit)
Round one: After the gloves touch Ellenberger charges forward with a combination of punches led by a wild right hand. Howard shrugs it off and backs Jake up until he gets a clinch. Ellenberger pins Howard's back against the cage as both fighters are working shots to the body. Howard tries for a takedown, but Ellenberger defends it well. More hard body strikes from both men out of the clinch. Knee from Ellenberger. Herb Dean wants more action. He doesn't get it and calls for a separation. Howard explodes with a lightning quick left hook that just misses. He leans in with another that also misses, but they end up in back in the clinch immediately afterward. Knee to the body followed up by a beautiful double leg takedown from Ellenberger. Howard has a full closed guard here as Ellenberger works some ground strikes. Ellenberger pushes him towards the cage as he continues to throw punches and elbows to Howard's head. Howard tries to get back to his feet, but Ellenberger stays heavy. Now Herb Dean steps in and calls for a stand up. Push kick from Jake. Hard leg kick from Howard. Jake with a punch to the body. Back into the clinch and Ellenberger scores a quick single leg takedown. Into Howard's half guard as he works the ground and pound. The round ends there and that should be Ellenberger 10-9.
Round two: Howard connects on a high kick and Ellenberger is wobbly. Howard tries to capitalize, but Jake gets a clinch. Howard pushes him off and charges forward with more punches. Ellenberger quickly gets a takedown. Howard looking for a guillotine, but Ellenberger gets out easily. Now a triangle attempt, but Ellenberger does well to defend that as well. Into half guard now for Jake. He appears to be recovered now as he starts in with more elbows and punches to Howard's face. Howard gets his full guard back and he closes it up. He's controlling Jake's left arm nicely and avoiding punishment from his back as Herb Dean warms Ellenberger to get busy. Ellenberger frees his arm and goes back to work on Howard from the top position. Ellenberger stands and tries to rain down a big punch, but Howard uses the opportunity to get to his feet and now he's attempting a single leg takedown. Ellenberger isn't having it and now he shoots for a takedown. Howard sprawls and now he's looking to tee off. Ellenberger is backpedaling with Howard charging at him and he shoots quickly and puts Howard on his back again. More ground and pound from Jake. The round ends there and despite getting rocked early on, Ellenberger made that round really close and may have even stole it.
Round three: Howard's left eye is just about swollen shut as he comes out for round three. He's okay to continue, though, and we're back underway. He catches a body kick from Ellenberger and unloads with a right hand. Ellenberger gets sent backwards and Howard charges forward and connects with a brutal knee. Ellenberger looks hurt again as he tries to circle away. Howard is swinging for the fences, but Jake is recovered now. Howard shoots with a slow motion single leg attempt. Ellenberger defends it easily and gets separation. Jab from Ellenberger as Howard's eye continues to swell. Takedown for Ellenberger right into Howard's full guard. Softening blows to the body from Jake. Now some elbow attempts to that eye. Herb Dean wants a timeout and he calls for the cageside doctor to come over and take a look at Howard. The doctor takes one look at the eye and calls the fight right there. Big win for Jake Ellenberger who hands "Doomsday" his first loss inside the Octagon.
Final result: Jake Ellenberger defeats John Howard via technical knockout (doctor stoppage) at 2:21 of round three
-end-
Takanori Gomi vs. Tyson Griffin (155-pound limit)
Round one: No gloves touching here and we're underway with the first fight of the Versus telecast. Griffin opens up with a right hand. Gomi's stance is nice and low. Griffin leans in and they exchange. Griffin again lands a right hand. Gomi fires back and misses on two wild punches. Griffin has his hands down by his waste. He looks a little bit too comfortable here. Gomi misses with a left then fires a right that lands right on the button. Tyson crumbles like a ton of bricks and this fight is over just like that. Wow!
Final result: Takanori Gomi defeats Tyson Griffin via knockout (punch) at 1:04 of round one
-end-

WHAT'S NEXT? JONES VS KEN SHAMROCK??
Dana get stuff straight!
There is a HUGE difference between the Janitor and Ken Shamrock
"They lie about marijuana. Tell you pot-smoking makes you unmotivated. Lie! When you're high, you can do everything you normally do, just as well. You just realize that it's not worth the fucking effort. There is a difference."
LOL horrible comparison.

solid free card
Fedor invented a language that incorporates Sambo and Kimuras.
So next time FEDOR is kicking your ass, don't be offended or hurt, he may be just trying to tell you he likes your hat.
who the hell is DrubySunshine
but yes i never complain about FREE cards, and this one is quite solid. SHould be good.

jones
people are WAY 2 hyped on bones, this couldnt be a better test. the janitor is very tough, strong, and durable, he is gonna have a hard time throwing around the janitor or finishing him, after this maybe a bigger fight like thiago silva, i think they should match him with jason brilz or ryan bader, maybe even phil davis
He's no test compared to Hamill...tko or ko rnd 1

r u kidding me? he basically took out hammil, and just beat brandon vera. Ure telling me if he beats matusheynko he should fight thiago silva who is coming off of a loss? And jason brilz?? Get real, after this fight he should be fighting the top fighters in the division, not up and comers like phil davis
maybe
maybe phil davis vs jones in 2012 for the lhw championship, they are the future of the division, i think its not a good idea to put them up against each other so soon let them build and develop against tough guys like the janitor

Jones will smash vlad
he’s way too quick, i’d like to see phil davis, griffen, Bader or Silva (but he’s get Boetsch)
I don't know Vlad
Maybe I’ve just not been into MMA long enough, I kind of know the name but no more than that.
No matter how good he is, I think Jones needs to be fighting bigger names, as a lot of people still doubt how good he is. A win over this guy won’t change that,
I think it should be griffin or bader. Although I could see those fights being similar to bonnar and hammil.
griffin
griffin has said he doesnt want to fight up and coming fighters because thats a loose-loose situation for him. so i dont think he will fight jones so soon maybe if jones keeps tearing trough the division like hes doing now

Bader is a bad idea, imo...
These are 2 up and coming contenders. If you match these guys up now, you ruin the possiblity of a big hype match when they are both top to fighters (which is right around the corner for the both of them).
Thiago Silva or Forrest are going to have to step up. I know Griffin says he won’t or doesn’t like fighting up and comers, but Jones is on the brink of contendership (and not being and up and comer) so how the hell else does he break Top 10. If Forrest won’t fight him Dana should hand him his walking papers. Forrest has no business still being in the Top 10 (especially the Top 5), but he has stayed there by default. Being how Anderson wasn’t ranked when he poilshed him off. He got an injured Rua and really should have never got the Win in the Rampage fight. Who is left for Forrest anyway? He is not a serious contender although I imagine Shogun will want his revenge.
I like the dangers that Vlad poses for Jones. Do I think Vlad wins? No, absoluetly not, but he does have the tools to push Jones. Vlad has hung in there and beaten some of the best wrestlers in the game. I just think Jones brings a different dynamic to the game with his style.
Shivello "The Voice": That jab is stiffer than a box of Viagra!" and I am still wondering if I heard this one right on Dream 14...."These guys are busier than a cucumber in a women's prison!"
break top 10? he is top 10.
bader is basically ahead of forrest too cause forrest has lost so many fights.
your mother !
After Jones..
cleans the mat with Vlad (see what I did there)..I think its definitely the time for him to face the upper echelon of fighters.
maybe a matchup with Lil Nog or possibly Captain America.
Question...
It airs at 9PM. NOW I usually watch UFC on Sunday here at 10 AM(since it airs at 10 PM in the USA).
Does that mean i have to watch it at 9AM? I forgot if UFC events uses Eastern or Western time in USA.
Jon Bones Future as i see it
1.)Face the winner of Machida/Rampage: The top echaelon win he could use
2.)Face Randy Couture if Randy beats Toney: Why not face either one for a big win
3.Fight Winner of Hamill-Ortiz: Either gets to avenge the loss or end Tito lol
Attaboy
Brian Stann! And by triangle choke no less. Hope this guy keeps improving.

Shark Fights 13 Presents Jardine vs. Irvin
heres the transcript
“I am so eagerly awaiting this showdown of two great vets of MMA colliding. Now,. i understand both have had some stumbles but, both have nothing but, great respect from their trainers. This fight will be a slugfest and i assure you much moe great things will be announced…like Kimbo vs. Sylvia for the Shark Fight World Title”
hmm off the versus 2 note but, Ricco Rodriguez won again, thats like 8-9 wins
why not someone bring him in?
Because
he won a split decision over a guy who doesn’t even have a wiki. And his last loss was just over a year ago against another guy who has no wiki. Sure he lined up a few cans and knocked them down but don’t expect to see him in any big org any time soon. I’m digging all the former UFC matchups on Moosin and Shark Fights, etc. Maybe he can fight Tim Sylvia.

true, but theres plenty of guys who fight cans and get considered top ten level just because they hav’nt lost, but their oppenents do have a wiki, on yet again another note does anyone think gomi gets let go if he loses, cause imma big fan and that wud blow..
For what profit is it to man if he gains the world , and loses his own soul?
- Matthew 16:26
Its still pretty frickin good to have a 9 win fight streak
Ricco is down to 205lbs, nobody suspected that
Ricco is clean, no one suspected that
Ricco has had an up and down road but, heck lets give the guy another chance, he is young as hell. I want too see him in the big two sometime soon.
Okay
you guys convinced me. Let’s see him on a UFC undercard and see how he does. Just being former UFC champ he could prolly pull Strikeforce main card. Not main event or co-main but still on the main card.
As for Gomi that depends on his performance tonight. I doubt he gets cut. He is super tough. Great fight against Kenny even though he got dominated. He is like Randy or similar. He is a legend in the sport and I think that garners him a little slack. Looks like he has a size advantage tonight, we shall see…

randy’s acctually on a win streak so theres a difference, and i hope gomi wins..

- Matthew 16:26
True
I just meant as far as status in the sport in general. Fighters like Wand etc. have more slack when they lose IMO. Look how long it took Dana to cut Chuck. I realize he is dana’s boy. But there are others. Matt Hughes comes to mind. But a lot of that depends on their performance. If they put up a good fight but lose that helps as well.

I doubt it
This is only his second loss in a row. Before that he had two wins, over a larger Hermes Franca (who didn’t make weight) and he got a win and Fight of the Night honors against Dos Anjos.
I think it would be premature for the UFC to release him now.

Failed on a takedown attempt, but it was a good transition to and from the attempt to maintain clinch control.

Howard was basically controlled in the clinch and on the ground.
He didn’t act like he was especially uncomfortable in any situation, but he wasn’t able to work out of anything effectively.
Ellenburger via control, in my book. Striking was pretty even, maybe slight edge to Jake.

There are two ways to deal with takedowns.
1. Prevent them.
2. Scramble out and re-gain neutral standing position.
There isn’t really a 3. scramble for a reversal because generally you don’t get taken down that easily, there’s no way you can grapple for position on the ground.
If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...
Your right.
When the guy connects some punches he’s taken down that easily. It’s depressing.

Well, that was a pretty good round, actually.
Ellenburger never had Howard in trouble, but Howard did stun Ellenburger a couple of times.
I generally award even rounds to the controlling fighter, so I would go Ellenburger, but there’s an argument for Howard due to the big shots.

Nice FIght Okami Wins
Muñoz REALLY needs better shoots and should have thrown for the fences.
This is what is wrong with MMA.
Just fuck…..it’s really just depressing that people will excuse this as well judging is hard and it’s up to interpretation.

Maybe not, but Okami did prove that he's willing to do what it takes to win,
rather than do what it takes to be exciting. You have to have that attitude if you even want to dream of defeating Anderson.

Akiyama probably needs to drop a weight class.
I’m not sure his frame will ever support that much muscle for 15/25 minutes.

Okami has been pointed as the man to get the title shot. Give him the chance after Soneca gets what is kept for him.

The wrestler prototype is really better for unified rules.
That’s why i would imagine that Kawajiri would do a whole lot better than Aoki despite the fact that he was deftly achilles locked by him.

Just that in itself would be a great improvement to see on him. He’s been saying a lot though about his matwork and ground passes so i imagine he’s gonna flex some of that.

I don't remember him being on his back.
It’s going to be hard to get a non-stunned takedown on him. He keeps his base so low, and he can explode for leverage so quickly that it’s going to be hard to grapple him down.

I think that was the point.
Not positive, but I think so.
If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...
Agreed
Didn’t read the whole thread, but I was pretty shocked how bad McCarthy was in the Okami fight. It was pretty obvious that Munoz was not getting the TD, but he let them sit there. Especially after watching Dean stand-up howard and Ellenberger.
"Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is to not stop questioning." - Albert Einstein
Perhaps Jones was being sarcastic.....
Ya think?
" Its a good thing you look good in that suit, cos that's all you're gonna be doing - wearing a suit."
We realize that
We are discussing the context of how it was used….
" Its a good thing you look good in that suit, cos that's all you're gonna be doing - wearing a suit."
I never saw the movie.
But the context made the motivation kind of obvious.
If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...
If you have never seen the movie then how can you comment on motivation and context?
Just wondering? BTW rent it, buy it, On Demand it…just watch it. Great movie.
......
Context being the crowd's reaction to many of the fight situations.
It was obvious they weren’t displaying much appreciation for the ground game or transition attempts throughout the card. Taken on its face, his statement stands pretty perfectly on its own, without a film reference.
Motivation being that he would like for the fans to appreciate those components of the game, rather than just cheering sloppy kickboxing with five ounce gloves.
Not picking on you or being sarcastic, that’s honestly how I processed his statement at the time.
If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...
no worries
you are right in your statement…and the only thing that matters is Bones is gonna be the LHW champ sooner than later!
......
no, i dont think it was sarcastic..
it was a reference from anchorman.. he probably just wanted to say it no matter what..
i was the one being sarcastic..
