Frankie Edgar: 'If I was Gray Maynard, I'd be upset that BJ Penn got an immediate rematch' (Video)

Is B.J. Penn's immediate rematch justified? Or, should B.J. have been forced to work his way back to the top like everyone else?

It was such a close fight

and BJ was champ for so long he deserves the immediate re-match.

Maynard Did Nothing Vs Diaz To Warrant A Title Match

If you lose a round to Nate then your not ready for BJ. And besides he has his chance. If he beats Florian its now his title shot.

It's Not So Much That...

I totally get what you are saying, but I think the point is Gray is still undefeated (exciting or not) and he is the ONLY person to beat Edgar. In my opinion Gray should have had 1st crack and BJ should have had to get in at least 1 rebound fight. Chuck was a longtime champ, Urijah was champ forever and neither got an immediate rematch when they lost their belt.

Give a man to fish and feed him for a day. Kick his stupid ass and maybe he will leave you alone.

The Controversy is what did it

like Machida-Rua. Alot of people felt BJ won and right fully so.

exactly

B-level BJ should have beat Frankie. Next up, A-level and domination.

check out what BJ thinks

kinda pissed that Frankie wanted to fight Maynard instead of BJ.. I think both guys beat Frankie, he was the better man that night, but I see a one sided domination coming up in Boston!

Wrong.

Because It Was No Way Near a 50-45 decision

I can see how they score it for Frankie but 48-47 at best.

by AintNoSunshine on Jun 30, 2010 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok, so one ref scored it 50-45(which I agree is bullshit), but the other 2 refs scored it for Edgar as well.

The only thing controversial about the decision was that 50-45 score, not the winner.

by Diceman on Jun 30, 2010 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope

It was a controversial decision, most pro’s after the fight had it scored for BJ.

It was easily as bad as Shogun/Machida, and I think Shogun/Machida set precedent for immediate rematches for bad decisions.

Shogun lost a close decision! Everyone get crazy!

by ShaiZ on Jul 1, 2010 4:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Your point is mostly valid

But regarding Faber, he’s had a stretch where every other fight is for the title. While that clearly doesn’t constitute “immediate rematch”, the rebound fights were basically just a formality, a formality the UFC has chosen to dispense with.

Maynard got screwed.

Even though it was a close fight, BJ lost it because he fought like he didn’t give a rat’s ass. I don’t know if Frankie deserved the win with his performance, but BJ definitely deserved the loss with his half-hearted effort. And yes, Gray Maynard should have had first crack, since he’s the only guy with a win over Frankie and was already the No 1 contender. BJ shouldn’t get a free ticket back to the title when nobody else does (it wasn’t a controversial fight like Shogun/Machida.) Rampage/Forrest was closer and more controversial, and Rampage didn’t get a rematch.

I did too, but don't blame the judges

Frankie came to fight and BJ put in a half-hearted effort and didn’t seem to give a flip about the fight, so I don’t mind the judges rewarding Frankie for his agression and persistence and penalizing BJ for taking a night off.

Plus, I think the UFC wasted a golden opportunity to let the title be interesting again for a little while. Wouldn’t it be nice to have title matches that realistically seem like they could go either way for a change instead of one-sided mismatches we’ve had for the past couple years in the 3 lighter divisions! They could still make big money off BJ fighting a rubber match with Hughes while Edgar & Maynard fight and Kenny takes on the winner. Then maybe, just maybe, the winner of those 3 might seem like a legitimate threat to BJ and make for an exciting title fight.

depends Mac

If Frankie told the UFC he’d rather fight Maynard than BJ (which Im assuming he did, why else would Penn say this) than I think it’s fine. Why would you want to fight the most boring fighter in the division over arguably the best ever in the division who you realistically barelty beat and can try to prove you beat handily by beating him again. If it’s speculation (again, I doubt it) then I agree with you mac

by kevjack115 on Jun 30, 2010 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I respect that Frankie preferred to fight Maynard. He already beat Penn, it’s not like he’s duckign him. maynard is the harder fight for him stylistically and if he beats Maynard he avenges his only career loss and becomes the undisputed champion.

cmon mac

I’m very realistic when speaking about GSP, so do the same with Penn. You could tell from the get go BJ wasn’t himself that night. If you can honestly tell me you don’t think BJ is the best LW I’ll respect that, but I really can’t see how you don’t acknowledge that. When Serra beat GSP, I may have enjoyed it, but even i said that was lightning in a bottle!

by kevjack115 on Jun 30, 2010 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

realistic? LMAO!!! He lost fair and square. Styles make fights dude. I shouldn't have to explain this to you

BJ probably will beat Frankie but Gray’s strength and wrestling is too much for Frankie…BJ will stand and trade and give Frankie the same opportunity to win again….GSP’s loss wasn’t the same and I agree that it was lightning in a bottle. BJ had 5 full rounds to put Frank away and couldn’t. I’m not saying BJ will lose agian but Gray is a harder fight for Frank imo

by McArthur... on Jun 30, 2010 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

fair enough

I know he lost fair and square, and unlike most Penn fans, I had no issues with the decision. I’m not into excuses either, but as I said the same night as the fight, I could tell something was wrong with BJ during his ring entrance. Gray is tough for anyone because of his style, I’ll give you that too. I think in a rematch Gray beats edgar again, but couldn’t touch Penn…and thats why mmath doesn’t work!

by kevjack115 on Jun 30, 2010 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

it doesn't work but that doesn't change what could happen...

its weird cause I think we, being the first real MMA fans, forget these guys age…it happens to great fighters…like Chuck for example. I’m not saying BJ is even close to being done with MMA but he’s bound to slow down a little right? Guys figure them out. They watch sooo much film, develop these gameplans, come in hungry, young, fast, ready to go and nothing to lose. Frankie has said many times that BJ is the best LW ever….and we all agree. That takes a lot of pressure off I think. It happened to Fedor, it happened to Penn, and it will hapeen to GSP, and Silva too.

I agree.

Frankie was exposed by Maynard to be lacking in the wrestling department. When a guy is as good as you, but much bigger, you tend to lose (see Lesnar/Carwin Saturday).

BJ has nowhere near the freestyle wrestling of either Edgar or Maynard. Hence, harder match-up stylistically for Edgar. BJ is a counter puncher who wasn’t fast enough to hit Edgar solidly halfway into round 3, so he lost.

Lesnar.

Carwin just recently went above 265 to cut down. When he came into the UFC, from what I understood, he didn’t cut ANY weight. Lesnar was walking around at 290 then, but actually now, I think he said he is cutting little to no weight for this fight, so just place in whoever you want because I am kinda dumb right now. :)

Well, if you want to look at it that way...

If I was Gray Maynard, I’d be upset that the guy I beat got a title shot before me.

Of course, that fight against Nate Diaz probably had a lot to do with that as well.

I’m not a big fan of immediate rematches, but this is a case where I think it’s applicable. That was a very close fight, with some ridiculous scores from the judges.

by Hardcase on Jun 30, 2010 4:35 PM EDT reply actions

It’s rare that I agree with immediate rematches. In the case of a title fight and a dominant champ losing, I agree with it!

by kevjack115 on Jun 30, 2010 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep.

Almost the same with Machida/Shogun. I’m probably one of the few online who thought Lyoto won the first fight, but it was so close, who could complain about a rematch? And look what Shogun pulled off second time around!

by Hardcase on Jun 30, 2010 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought penn easily won 3 rounds but who cares right? Both guys will come out looking to finish next time around and should be a lot more exciting.

by Tr8k on Jun 30, 2010 4:40 PM EDT reply actions

rematch

from a BJ Fan, BJ lost the last 2 rounds CLEARLY in my opinion. Edgar pushed the pace and dictated the fight. However, BJ clearly won the first 2 rounds and with a close 3rd round, I think BJ took it.

In my opinion, a champion doesn’t loose his belt in a close decision. How the judges scored the fight the way they did is crazy. I think MMA needs some new judges. All 5 rounds for Edgar??? Someone pointed out above, if you watch the fight closely, especially the exchanges, Frankies strikes were glancing at best , but they were quick and difficult to score.

I almost fell off my couch when they were announcing the judges decision when I heard 50-45 Edgar………… Tony Soprano involved in that some how????

Any Maynard didn’t want to take a fight against BJ…….said he wasn’t ready. Edgar gets the shot vs BJ, should why would Edgar fight Maynard for the title……..when you have a guy who hasn’t lost in 8 years in that division……asking for a rematch after loosing his belt by a close decision.

Edgar could fight at 145, BJ has fought and won at 170…..no reason BJ should just take him down and beat the shit out of him and call it a night………..

by tallimeca on Jun 30, 2010 7:12 PM EDT reply actions

I think BJ had an injury or some other issue....

He just looked lethargic (like the last GSP fight) and his knee was wrapped with no explanation. He basically sat in the middle of the ring and show no good movement making me thing his knee was injured. I think the UFC showed their appreciation of him not pulling out of the fight on the Abu Dhabi card and that along with how close the fight was, created the immediate rematch.

Could be a different fight this time around but I still think Frankie is pretty game and he’s got a nice all around game. Looking forward to the rematch.
