UFC 117: Matt Hughes vs Ricardo Almeida announced for Aug. 7 in Oakland

Hughes-almeida_medium

Ricardo Almeida will be out for revenge when he locks horns with Matt Hughes in a welterweight showdown that is now set for the upcoming UFC 117: "Silva vs. Sonnen" pay-per-view (PPV) event planned for the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif., on Aug. 7.

The promotion today made the long-rumored 170-pound match up official.

"Cachorrão" should be in high spirits, considering he's the winner of three straight. The grappling wizard recently made Matt Brown look mortal in their 170-pound clash at UFC 111: "St. Pierre vs. Hardy" back in March.

His celebration was short lived, however, as his master and long-time friend, Renzo Gracie, was stopped by the flinty farmboy at UFC 112: "Invincible" earlier this month.

Almeida has looked good since dropping to 170-pounds, but will he be good enough to overcome the former division champion?

Star-divide

Hughes battered Gracie en route to a third round technical knockout stoppage in Abu Dhabi. It was his second straight win since dining on Thiago Alves' knee at UFC 85: "Bedlam" in June 2008.

The former champ has been particular about his opponents since entering the twilight of his career, but doesn't seem to mind adding another Gracie Jiu-Jitsu fighter to his combat resume.

UFC 117 will feature the put-up-or-shut-up middleweight title fight between Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva in the main event of the evening. A welterweight rematch between top contenders Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves is also expected to go down.

Why did Hughes take this fight?

Its a tough one and he gains nothing from it.

He should be fighting other oldies.

Nah, if he wins he gains a lot. I don’t think he will though. He hasn’t looked impressive at all in his last few outings.

Pimp

continuation of the Gracie Saga lol

Huge if he wins, imo but the chances of that are slim. Guys like Hughes/Chuck/Tito are basically fighting each fight to stay out of retirement.

im a hughes fan, but after this, i cant think of a single fight id like to see him in??

HellaHectic, KOS, and Rashad gang-banged my mom.

naah, Almeida wins.

Hughes should fight Matt Serra one more time so Serra can shut him up for real.

Rashad is the king of errything! Rampage is homo.

Serra aint shit, and Hughes would beat him again anyway

Next prediction -- Martin Kampmann submits Paulo Thiago

Counting down the days till Shogun vs Rogerio 2 (which now seems to have increased dramatically)

You mean Hughes would lay on him again?

And pray to god little Matt doesn’t get up and woop his sorry ass.

That’s right girl, let me whisper in your ear
Baby wake up, we’re naked and we’re humpin’ sexy
For the last fifteen minutes baby, that’s what’s been happen’
Yeah, too late now, it’s on.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 4, 2010 8:10 AM EDT up reply actions

yep he would

it’s what works for GSP in every fight

I can’t believe Rashad ‘Sugad’ all over Rampage at 114. Quittin Jackson was a bad choice from the start and I think he needs to now consider retirement. Fedor too!

Serra's face was all busted up at the end of the fight

and he didn’t do anything the whole time. couldn’t finish Hughes when they collided heads, he instead decided to get taken down and gave up his back. played round 2 like a fool and was making faces instead of trying for sweeps or to get to his feet. and spend round 3 holding on to rubber guard till the last 40 seconds.

Hughes would beat him again, and probably finish him the 2nd time around.

i hope you guys don't start raggin on hughes. gsp fights just like him....

i know gsp said he idolized hughes but he didn’t have to copy his one dimensional wrestling style.

Ricardo’s cool.. I liked him when he dropped down to welterweight.. Hughes needs to retire.. he’s a hall of famer and he knows he won’t be holding that belt anytime soon

Hughes needs to take a bigger fight

and stop trying to milk his name. Id like to see him fight a guy like Fitch or Kos or any great Wrestler just to see if he can still hang. We all know that any great striker witrh OK td defense would put him to sleep.

I <3 Rashad Evans

by The real ZACK on Jun 4, 2010 8:28 AM EDT reply actions

Nah, this fight is a good one. I doubt Hughes will get through it, or if he does it’ll be a lopsided decision. He’s at the tail end of his career and looked sloppy against Alves, Serra, and Renzo. Fitch or Kos would destroy him these days. Almeida is a good test and both guys get something out of a win: Almeida beats a legend and Hughes proves he can still hang with a decent fighter who isn’t on the verge of retirement.

Why do you count hughes out?

Guy lost to st pierre and alves…won every other fight…he will win this one too.

by Mir on Jun 4, 2010 11:08 AM EDT reply actions

Everyone lost to st pierre

Alves was also overwieght for that fight and was getting messed up inn round 1

by Mir on Jun 4, 2010 11:09 AM EDT reply actions

since they both focus on there ground game, dosnt that mean that hughes should win? if hes know for anything hes know for his wrestling and his ground game. but it would be nice seeing hughes go old school on this guy and knocking him out. im taking hughes winning by UD. should be a pretty boring fight judging by his previous fights
