Frank Shamrock retires from mixed martial arts
Frank Shamrock (23-10-2) announced his retirement from mixed martial arts midway through last night's (June 26) Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Werdum" Showtime telecast from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
"The Legend" was last seen getting hammered into a TKO stoppage by current Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz. It was his second straight defeat after coughing up the promotion's 185-pound title to San Shou Striker Cung Le.
Shamrock was the first fighter to hold the UFC Middleweight Championship (later renamed the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship), held the interim King of Pancrase title in addition to the WEC Light Heavyweight Championship, and in his final run, the Strikeforce Middleweight Championship.
Unless he pulls a Randy Couture and decides to come back and take on a new generation, the 37-year-old middleweight is calling it a career. Where does he rank on your all-time list?
Let's hear your thoughts, Maniacs.

I agree, Frank deserves the title "Legend"
unlike his never-was-all-that-great-brother, Ken. Frank is the one who should be in the Hall of Fame. He absolutely DESTROYED all comers and was the only UFC Champ to retire undefeated (the first time). Unfortunately, after many years off, he came back a different guy.
My favorite moment in MMA History was when Tito Ortiz was kneeling at Franks feet in the center of the cage, begging him to stop hitting him.
And my All-Time-Dream-Matchup would have been Frank vs Sakuraba around 2000.
Prime Frank was the man
Shame that he became such a bitter waste of space in his old age.

Frank Shamrock retires from mma and this is what was said live:
Congrats on your retirement shamrock…its good to see you here giving blows instead off in the cage taking blows.. Shamrock responds with.. Thank you very much, if I can use my mouth to give blows rather than ( points to his hands) then ill take it!!!
I cant believe
Werdum beat fedor….ahhaha but its not funny…im upset. Werdum jesus..
I hate to say it at the risk of sounding like a dick, but I predicted that Fedor would lose!!!!
I just thought he would look past Werdum.
I guessed the same thing and bet on it at +500

It wasnt the win I expected but I’ll take it!!!! I took some shit for my comment … so I’m gonna enjoy it a bit
I dont think he looked past him
I think he got caught like many fighters did. Now I predict he will decline…Happens to all the best
And history is made.
Pretty exciting night…..still in a bit of shock over here.

bla bla bla..
Fedor dont get caught. He didnt care…
Where does he rank on your all-time list?
He doesn’t. Thanks for asking, though~!
Top 50
I think Frank Shamrocks finest moment in MMA was when he defeated then the younger and much bigger Tito Ortiz back in UFC22. Two wins over the legendary Bas Rutten early in his career. He was a pioneer in the no guts no glory days. I personally don’t like him as a person in how he comes across as when talks or commentates. I respect his MMA career. You got to. For newer fans of MMA.. do some research. I consider him in the Top50 not sure exactly where, but his in there. He was the first ever UFC/WEC LHW Champ.
Top 50 what?
Top 50 toughest guys in the history of MMA, or top 50 in his weight class?
Also I don’t remember seeing Frank until the late 90’s early 2000. When the hell did he fight Bas? From what I remember of Bas he didn’t lose to Shamrock twice. Once maybe, if that.

I remember Bas losing twice...
but I believe it was to Ken Shamrock in Pancrase fights. I do Remember Frank Slamming Tito to the ground for the win. Great moment in history.

your memory sucks, Shadow
Frank did slam some guys, but not Tito. He tapped Tito with strikes, monkey chopping him as Tito kneeled at his feet holding his ankle and begging for mercy.
Bas went 2-1 against Frank and 0-2 against Ken.
I wasn't that far off
I remembered that it was Ken Shamrock that beat him 2 times and not Frank. I was wrong about the Tito fight though. Somehow I got it confused with the Igor Zinoviev fight. Oh well.

He did beat Bas in 94 via majority decision, and loss to him in 95 by split decision. Correction made.. Top50 all time, as the question states in this thread.. " where do you rank him on your all time list? "
Frank also was the first ever in modern MMA to KO someone via a slam against Igor Zinoviev, later on Tito did it against Evan Tanner.
I agree Frank is a pioneer and a legend
Just didn’t know about the Bas loss(es).

I wasn't watching Pancrase in 94(or whatever the fought) I hadn't really heard a lot of mention of a fight with Bas at all.

"Figures you'd say that"?? makes no sense
Is it me or is that one of the gayest MMA pictures ever?
Frank had his 15 min…stretched it to 20 but he never should have come back. Like most “legends”. He was good. A “Legend”? I personally don’t think so. Didn’t he give himself that nickname?

A living legend!
We gotta love Frank and thank him for everything he has done for the sport! If it wasn’t for the bad blood, they would’ve inducted him into the UFC hall of fame a long time ago!
You’re the man, Frank!!!!!!!
Oh is that what frank was doing in the ring
I could barely hear from all the booing.
