Bellator 23 results: Joe Warren and Alexander Shlemenko win tournament championships

Bellator23-champs_medium

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 24, 2010) - Bellator Fighting Championships concluded its hugely successful second season with two more thrilling upsets on Thursday as middleweight Alexander Shlemenko scored a stunning TKO and featherweight Joe Warren won a hard-fought split decision to emerge as the Season 2 Tournament Champions in their respective divisions.

The sold-out event at Louisville's Fourth Street Live downtown entertainment district tied a ribbon on Bellator Season 2 in fitting fashion as fans were once again treated to a full card of electrifying fights that also included shocking upsets at bantamweight and in a Women's Feature Fight.

But the night undoubtedly belonged to Warren and Shlemenko, whose victories earned them $100,000 in prize money and the chance to fight reigning Bellator World Champions Joe Soto and Hector Lombard, respectively, in world title fights this fall.

Shlemenko, a 26-year-old army combat fighter known for his reliance on spinning back-fists and leg kicks, came out swinging in his typical style from the opening bell. But it was a far-more-conventional right hook to the jaw that eventually finished the heavily favored Bryan "The Beast" Baker roughly mid-way through Round 1.

Star-divide

The devastating punch left Baker (13-2) dazed and slowly crumpled him to the canvas before Shlemenko moved in for the finish with a flurry of punches. Referee Jason Herzog stopped the fight due to unanswered blows at 2:45 into Round 1.

It was just the second time that Baker had suffered a loss as a pro with the other coming at the hands of UFC star Chael Sonnen more than two years ago.

"We had heard that Alexander Shlemenko was one of the best middleweights in Europe and he definitely proved that here tonight," Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney said afterward. "He beat a very, very talented fighter in Bryan Baker and he's more than earned the right to face our champion Hector Lombard later this year."

Shlemenko, for his part, said the win was also a statement on behalf of all pure strikers in MMA today.

"This victory means that strikers soon will be all over MMA and that Bellator Fighting Championships will be owned by the strikers," he said through his translator.

Warren , meanwhile, took a far-more-circuitous route to his title. The 33-year-old former NCAA all-American and Greco-Roman wrestling world champion, appeared to be all but finished near the end of Round 1 when his opponent, the previously undefeated Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Patricio Pitbull, dropped him to the canvas with a right cross and then began a vicious ground-and-pound before Warren was saved by the bell.

But Warren rebounded in remarkable fashion during Rounds 2 and 3, digging deep and using his world-class wrestling skills to score points with a series of takedowns that were each followed by relentless ground-and-pound attacks punctuated with sharp elbows and stiff forearms to Pitbull's head.

The split decision victory was even more impressive given that Warren spent much of the day battling a stomach virus that left him unable to keep food down or maintain his balance.

"I feel tired but I'm very happy now," he said after the fight. "I fought a great fighter in Pitbull and now I'm the champion. I'm the baddest man on the planet!"

Rebney agreed, saluting Warren 's resilience and his will to win even in spite of his illness.

"He showed up tonight with a sickness that would have put a lot of people in the hospital and beat a world-class fighter and put on the kind of performance that you just can't script," he said. "What he did tonight was just epic and very, very impressive."

Earlier, in the first televised fight of the night, Fresno, Calif.-based striker Zoila "The Warrior Princess" Frausto scored a huge upset with a first round knockout of the world's top-ranked 125-pound female fighter, England 's Rosi Sexton.

At just two minutes into Round 1, Frausto (7-1) landed a left knee to Sexton's chin, knocking her unconscious and dropping her to the canvas before finishing her with three straight right hands to the jaw. It was just the second career loss for Sexton in 12 pro MMA fights.

"I saw the opening and I just threw the knee up," Frausto said afterward, adding that she thinks she now deserves to be ranked No. 1 in the world at 125. "I've been shooting for No. 1 since I got into the sport. This is exactly why I got into MMA."

Also Thursday, in what was billed as an "Eliminator Bout" to determine the latest entrant into Bellator's forthcoming Season 3 Bantamweight Tournament, two-time Wyoming state high school wrestling champion Nik "Garfield" Mamalis scored his second consecutive Bellator victory to improve his pro MMA record to 10-4 and punch his ticket into the tournament's eight-man field.

The soft-spoken Mamalis used an aggressive attack to neutralize L.A.-based rising star Albert Rios (12-5) via TKO at 4:40 into Round 1.

Afterward, Rebney said that Mamalis had more than earned his place in the Bantamweight Tournament draw.

"That's what Bellator's all about," Rebney said. "it's about giving a guy like Nik who hasn't had a chance on the big stage the opportunity to that and then he takes that opportunity by the throat."

The evening also played host to four non-televised "Local Feature Fights" showcasing top rising stars from Louisville , Cincinnati and Southern Indiana . The results of those fights are as follows:

- Brent Weedman def. John Troyer via armbar submission - Round 1, 4:55

- Daniel Straus def. Chad Hinton via unanimous decision

- Stoney Hale def. Mike Fleniken via rear-naked choke - Round 2, 4:20

- Kurt Kinser def. David Overfield via TKO (punches) - Round 1, 2:30

Bellator returns to TV in August for its much-anticipated third season, which will feature eight-man tournaments at bantamweight and heavyweight as well as a first-of-its-kind Women's Tournament showcasing eight female fighters ranked among the top 10 in their respective weight classes.

Each fight will once again be broadcast LIVE in primetime on Fox Sports Net and during special taped highlight shows every Saturday night on NBC, Telemundo and the cable network mun2.

One of the most disgusting robberies of this year.

Pitbull killed him in rd 1 and one of easiest 10-8 rds i’ve ever seen in MMA, yet fucking warren wins with two takedown?. Warren is truly mini hendo in that all these weird decisions keep going to him. Also these small time states have the shittiest worthless judges so everyone should expect Joe soto to beat up Warren for three rds and lose a decision just like friere and Grigori. No matter though he’s got a way bigger future than Joe for sure. WEC for sure and probly be top 5 FW in the future.

Shlemenko – awesome, he probly won’t be anything special and Hector will get him out of there in the 1st but very very fun to watch none the less. Maybe strikeforce might bring him in after.

Rosi – crazy upset, didn’t give zoila much of a shot. But like every Bellator event there is always …….always a massive KO. It’s like a standard part of the show now.

Great event overall. Hopefully Bjorn addresses these bs decisions.

I was thinking

he’s more like a mini Fitch w/ less skills. 10-8 Pitbull for sure, I mean shit he was 5 seconds from finishing…coulda, woulda, shoulda.

I'm your huckleberry.

Agreed

Pitbull completely worked Warren on the feet. I would say 10-8 1st round.

I am really getting bored with some of these judge’s decisions. I’m willing to bet 90% of them would not be able to answer a pre-fight questionnaire regarding the names of positions, strikes, and submission manuvers. The sad thing is most of them still harbor the mentality that if one guy takes the other down and it on top, then he must be winning.

Pitbull is for real, by this time next year, he will have some type of belt around his waist.

Shlemenko is a fun fighter to watch. Unfortunately, he will have nothing for Lombard’s 1 shot KO power.

And once again…. Imada won his fight against Curran and deserves an immediate shot against the winner of Alverez / Curran (which will be Alverez).

I agree – first round was10-8. But I think Warren won the next two rounds 10-9 – which makes it a tie. What do you do then? Split the prize? Have a re-match? I think the judges were probably instructed (at least tacitly) not to score any ties. The best way from my viewer standpoint woud have been one more round. It looked to me as if the Brazilian was gassing and Warren was not – Warren would have won another round.

Warren is new to MMA. Give him some time. He is very active on top, (though the Brazilian was blocking all the elbows.) I was impressed that he was totally neutralizing the Brazilian’s bottom game Ju-jitsu. So many wrestlers with that little MMA experience would have lost by arm bar, or triangle. With a little more time to figure out his ground and pound, he will be a lot of fun to watch. I know. A lot of guys wish the game was kick boxing, or muay tai. It isn’t. Get over it.

Like you said warren won the last round definitively. Round two is up for debate....

warren’s offense was not as damaging since Pitbull had fuel left. This fight should have been 29-27 without a doubt. As far as the judges it’s simply a prevalent idea in stateside MMA that draws or 10-10 rds are unacceptable. Commissions claim that they don’t admonish them but really they do. Also the fact that these small state don’t have good training program for judges and refs. Really though the Karen fight is perfect example of losing all three rds and winning a fight. Karen was not neutralized, he caught him every time and beat him up standing yet he wasn’t given a single rd by the judges. A post tournament rematch would be appropriate though.

I've just started posting here

But 2/3 have been about Joe/wrestling. I don’t see how you’d call his style LNP. I haven’t seen this particular fight yet either, but from the technical side his takedowns are top notch. I guess it’s like any other discipline if you don’t know a lot about it. I never used to like pure boxing until I tried and learned a little more. And what does he have 5 fights? Give him some time as well.

my issues aren't with Joe's strategy.

His wrestling is outstanding to watch. My issue is with the judges. He is going to develop his game and his style will change with that. But right now he’s being rewarded for things he didn’t do which i think is a disservice to him and even more atrocious for the guys who did beat him.

I can agree with that for sure regarding judges, and I’ve wondered what kind of courses are required of referees, they’re too nervous because they are on tv and subsequently blow calls. The judges are not held accountable by anything at this point. It’s so subjective it’s not like something as clear cut as replays or something at that moment could improve it.

I could be wrong

but all the fights I’ve seen of him winning were not impressive. He’s not all LNP but oftentimes that’s what it amounts to when he gets someone who can neutralize his ground game but not stop his takedown. It turns into periods on the ground of tiny position fights followed by a stand-up back to an immediate takedown. He’s a good wrestler but I don’t like watching his fights because they’re close decisions that just come down to position. I have a lot of respect for him for fighting through that sickness (I’ve had stomach flu and it sucks) but he’s not the “baddest man on the planet”.

Why are these just called tournament championships?

And not more accurately called “6-figure tournament championships”?

ah the bush leagues……..don’t know how to properly qualify their prizes……

Couldn’t agree more with the judging of not only this fight, but MMA as a whole. I’ve always been confused as to why the basically adopted the boxing-type judging, when it, in no way has the capacity to accurately judge an mma fight. There were articles floating around awhile back about going to a fractional system that sounding promising. Or even adding more 10 pt scales to each round, so in essence your score would be the sum of one scale for stand-up, one for sub-attempts, one for yada yada (you get the point) and a single round could end up 30-27 as opposed to an entire fight.

I don’t have the answer, but something HAS to change as the mma fight game inside the cage/ring/oct is light-years ahead of the fools judging it……..

You got that right

I’m not sure if the judges are idiots or crooked. I still don’t understand if they are going to use that 10-point must system why they don’t score the fights similar to K-1: 10-10 score for closely contested rounds and a mandatory 10-8 if an opponent is seriously hurt.

the six fig thing is the cumulation of the winnings you get by reaching the final.

Also a champion’s contract is pretty lucrative. I like 10-10 rds. They are excellent for rds where guys don’t do anything more so than the other guy. AKA, rounds aren’t decided by one takedown, clinching or three leg kicks…ludacris shit like that. 10-8 should be mandatory for a knockdown or a serious offensive volume that almost puts the opponent away.
