UFC 116: Yoshihiro Akiyama vs Chris Leben booked for July 3 with Wanderlei Silva hurt (Updated)

Sorry "Axe" fans, but Wanderlei Silva is off the UFC 116 fight card after murdering his ribs in training camp.
That very unfortunate news was first reported by MMA Fighting, who brought word of the Brazilian's injury earlier this afternoon, effectively squashing a much-anticipated middleweight mash-up between two of Japanese MMA's most popular fighters.
Despite Silva's last minute withdrawal, "Sexyama" will continue to train for the "Lesnar vs. Carwin" supershow on July 3 now that a resurgent Chris Leben has agreed to step in on short notice to throw hands, according to MMA Weekly.
"The Crippler" (20-6) is fresh off a second round stoppage over the ultra-tough Aaron Simpson this past Saturday night (June 19) at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11 Finale in Las Vegas.
It was his second straight win after dropping a pair of fights in a tumultuous two year span that also saw the former TUF star get popped for steroids.
No question a win over Akiyama in what may be the biggest pay-per-view event of the year would effectively complete his improbable comeback.
UFC 116 will feature a titanic heavyweight showdown between division champion Brock Lesnar and interim titlist Shane Carwin. It marks the return of the promotion's biggest box office draw, Lesnar, who will return from a career-threatening intestinal problem to once again establish himself as the undisputed man among men.
"Lesnar vs. Carwin" will also feature a lightweight showdown between Kurt Pellegrino and George Sotiropolous, as well as a highly-anticipated rematch between Stephan Bonnar and Krzysztof Soszynski.

Anderson Silva haters will be back on his nuts after he gets another amazing KO just like when he embarrassed Forrest in a way that nobody else has or could ever do. Very Matrix like. GSP on the other hand can't even finish people in his own weight division. The only time Andy goes the distance is against a decent fighter who he either isn't motivated to fight or train for and just toys around with them. Get a top fighter in there and watch him get destroyed within 2 rounds in a way that person's never been handled before. He's board at MW, get him to LHW so he can take that belt too and let's watch GSP be brave enough to take a fight at MW period. Facts are pretty amazing!

I think it’s a dog move, really. It isn’t that effective in a fight—not in regard to finishing or scoring or making an impact—yet tt could break little bones in the foot.
The damage afterward is more significant than its overall efficacy in a fight. Though, if you want someone to move their foot, it’s a good way to do it.

I think they do plenty of damage. But there is a time and a place for every technique. It works great when you have a guy pushed up against the cage and he has the underhooks.

I know fighters like to fight the best, and think they can win any fight, but this is a MUCH better match up for Sexyama. Leben is no Wandy and will have 12 days between fights…but its not like Leben does any gameplanning, he just swings for the fences!!!

This really sux. I think if Sexy wins he will still want to fight Wandy as planned before rather than a title shot. Perhaps Wandy will fight the winner. Akyiama vs Leben was really a great fight, i think akiyama was the better fighter but his cardio went off…
