Nate Marquardt vs Rousimar Palhares official for UFC 118 in Boston

Marquardt-palhares_medium

Top ranked middleweight contender Nate Marquardt (29-9-2) will be facing a very stiff test this summer now that he's booked to face muscular submission master Rousimar Palhares (11-2) at UFC 118: "Edgar vs. Penn 2" on Aug. 28 in Boston.

The UFC today officially announced the middleweight match-up, first reported by MMAmania.com back in May.

"The Great" is coming off a "Relentless" beat down at the hands of now number one middleweight contender Chael Sonnen at UFC 109 back in February. Many people pegged the fight as an easy win for Marquardt, but Mr. Sonnen showed us all yet again what good 'ole American wrestling can do for you in this sport.

Prior to the Sonnen defeat, Nate had won three consecutive fights inside the Octagon, including a 21-second dismantling of Demian Maia at UFC 102. That win propelled Marquardt back to the top of the division, but another title shot was just not meant to be at the moment.

Star-divide

Palhares is coming off a controversial submission win over Tomasz Drwal at UFC 111 back on March 27, failing to break the heel hook submission he applied in the first round in a timely fashion. The "Gorilla" tapped to no avail and referee Kevin Mulhall had to physically intervene upon calling the fight.

"Toquinho" later apologized for the hiccup, insisting there was no harm intended, but the NJSACB wasn't impressed with his post-fight apology and slapped him with a 90-day suspension.

He'll now look to redeem himself against perhaps his stiffest test to date (sans Dan Henderson) later this summer.

Ed, have you talked with Paulo Thiago since the Kampmann fight...?

I am just curious if he had an injury or something going in, as he just didn’t seem like himself from the get-go.

If so, give him a shout out for me. He’s one of my fav’s

re·tard strength

The inexplicable physical force possessed by the mentally handicapped, even after they have been institutionalized or are incapable of any exercise program. Retard strength is never used for any constructive purpose, and often results in unintentional injury.

That’s pretty much pointless unless you are someone like kos…havein him stand in a corner for a few minutes would have affected him more

ya but that wouldve hurt his feelings

So next time FEDOR is kicking your ass, don't be offended or hurt, he may be just trying to tell you he likes your hat.

i would love to see rousimar take this. my worries are…..nate (probably) is good enough on the ground to avoid subs. Nate prolly has the better striking, and wrestling, nd will prolly stay on top enough and avoid to get the decision (like hendo)

But…..paul harris has unorthodox strikes…..has power…..and if he gets ahold of a leg….he might take it home…..

You can't break Toquinho!

Conan : You are known as a striker. Is that correct? Tell me what that means.
Chuck : Well I like to punch people, or kick them.

Yeah

Id love to see Marquardt hurt this guy. I wouldn’t say that about many, but I saw total intention from Palhares on that last sub.

by theworldismine on Jun 22, 2010 11:12 AM EDT reply actions

I agree..

Toquinho is tuff and all, but something about his vibe is off. In his last fight, his opponent tapped twice and the ref still had to pry him off the guys heel. Then wants to refer to Murillo Bustemante vs Matt Lindand back in the day… which is BS. I think this is a hard match up for both fighters. I would like to see Nate win this one. People may say how humble and a nice person, but Palhares’s actions in the octagon hasn’t shown that.

Agreed, Palhares has some bad karma coming his way

Its Going To Be A Good One

If Palhares turns this into a striking fight Nate will absolutely shred him apart. If he decides to stay agressive, get close, clinch and TD then he has all the skills in the world to win. I dont see a finish however

Nate is going to knock Rousimar’s head off, the guy has a beatdown coming and Nate knows how to give one as long as Herb Dean isn’t reffing this should be a long night for Palhares.
