Bob Reilly: Don't legalize a 'brutal sport' like MMA just to make a buck

Fighting_politicians_5_medium

Props: WGRZ.com

Quoteworthy:

"Most of us believe this is a brutal sport. Some of us are willing, however, to legalize it because of the money it brings in, and I find that a pretty horrific type of attitude and position to have, because we're trying to stop bullying in schools, we're trying to stop gang violence and domestic violence."

New York Assemblyman Robert Reilly, D-Colonie, is afraid of losing the fight against domestic violence and school bullying if the "brutal sport" of mixed martial arts finds its way to the "Empire State." He also complains that his fellow lawmen, many of whom feel the same way he does about MMA, would legalize it anyway as some sort of financial band-aid to cover the state's massive wound that has been hemorrhaging cash under the current (and probably former) administration. Anyone think it's just a matter of time before the UFC hits Madison Square Garden? Or will the legal dinosaurs make sure this new bill to legalize MMA remains extinct?

well if you look at where mma is legal

you will see a shit load of bullying and a ton of senseless violence. new york on the other hand is a utopia where nothing bad ever happens. we should keep this place as such and not let it get infected with the plague that is mma

never have any regrets, because at the time, thats all you wanted to do

Agreed with every word

At least Saw (well the early ones at least) has a great plot, interesting characters, a strong cast and builds up suspense, Hostel is just pure gore and is a typical lazy shock film that doesn’t scare at all. Give me a proper thriller like Silence of the Lambs or Psycho over low budget gorefests anyday.

A story...

When I was leaving MTL (waiting in line to go through customs), I mentioned to the security guy that I saw the UFC event.

Security Guard : The reason for your visit?

Me : UFC event.

SG : Pleasure?

Me : Yeah, it was a good time.

Older woman in line: Yeah, watching people beat the crap out of each other, that’s pleasure for you.

Older woman’s husband : Ha!

Me (staring at him) : Yeah, I grew up on boxing so I guess I am just violent in nature.

Older woman’s husband (staring at my goatee) : Um, excuse us, please.

Older woman : (silence)

SG (laughing)

People are stupid..but not as dumb as Reilly..

With boxing, hockey, football.. are all pretty aggressive full contact sports. Not to long ago I was hearing about " BullyProof " that program out of Torrance Gracie Academy to empower victims of bullying to BJJ.. to help their self esteem etc. MMA being legal in NY or not will not affect school/domestic violence. Education and awareness will.

MMA is for emo kids who listen to Marilyn Manson and hate their parents! If they didn’t have outlets like getting into a cage in front of thousands of horrible excuses for humans, maybe these kids would find healthy outlets, like school, and trades.

Another Typical Retarded Politician

That has absolutely no idea about the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. I still find it to be lunacy that MMA is considered Barbaric but boxing is considered legitimate. How many boxers have died in the ring…I do not know that answer, but i do not that the number has to exceed that of MMA. If you are not a fan of combat sports then I get that, but if New York is not willing to sanction MMA, then they should do away with Boxing, Wrestling, Karate, and shit Football while we are at it.

These guys have no idea what they are talking about, and the majority of them are just trying to get their names out there because this is a hot button topic…That’s what pisses me off the most about people like this moron Bob Reilly. He is trying to further his political career by fighting this! But he will eventually lose, and that makes me very fucking happy.

i can only think of 1 kid who got paralyzed shooting in for a takedown incorrectly. That was recent I believe

by Body Triangle on Jun 22, 2010 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

okay, now to be fair

UFC (main stage) has only been around since ‘93’. Only been a hot topic, and proved lasting power since 2002’ish. No, no one on the big stage has died. Not many on the big stage in boxing have either, and its been around 100 yrs and then some. So, its proved itself to be not a fatality sport. Obviously neither is MMA, but it is undoubtedly more brutal then Boxing. Or any other sport out there for that manner. I love MMA, I’m just fuckin around in my other posts, but it clearly is the most dangerous of all the sports we watch today, or ever for that matter.

In boxing and K1 when a fighter goes down, they get a count to allow the brain to recover, and allow the ref assessment if damage. In MMA, if the fighters on his game, he’ll already of followed up with a shot or 2/3/4…before the ref gets in there. Can be very dangerous. I see where these guys are coming from. The sport is scary to ppl who don’t understand, nor want to.

There was a few instances after the gloves(they made a good movie about one of them) where people were plastering their hands or cutting some of the stuffing out of the gloves that resulted in deaths.

I can’t remember the name of the movie or the boxer they were portraying, but it was a serious problem back in the 30’s-40’s.

what about Billy Collins JR

He was an undefeated fighter, who in !983 fought Luis resto resto and his team removed padding from his gloves, and used plaster apprius (sp?) Long story short he destroyed Collins career and i dont think he ever fought again after that beating. He didnt die, but boxers have I think it was sports science that was sayinf boxing was alot worse on the brain because the 16oz gloves slowly give a worse beating than a fist

by LOKIE on Jun 22, 2010 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

yep

padded gloves like that, combined with the 8 count, allow a fighter to take multiple shots to the head and go on to fight with concussions. While this almost certainly also occurs in MMA, its much more prevalent in boxing. TKO calls save lives.

by Body Triangle on Jun 22, 2010 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

collins didnt die in the ring that night

He did die shortly thereafter when he found out he would never fight again. His life spiraled in less than a year and he died in a car accident. The pics of his face from the day after he fought Resto are terrible to look at.

but if you look at the NFL in that same time frame the injuries are far worse. and in boxing after your 8 count you get to go back in there and take maybe another couple rounds of shots to the head.

jay, you illiterate f*ck!

Lol, I said “not many” on the big stage in boxing. I said “none” for big stage MMA (UFC). And yeah, before boxing gloves, I don’t consider that time frame/era to be the ideal ‘boxing’ I was referring to. Just like I don’t consider UFC 1 as a good reflection/judgment of MMA.

It has been proven that taken repeated blows to the head causes more long term damage to the brain then taking a few heavy shots (like MMA). If you look at the actual amount of clean punches that land in an MMA fight, you will be very surprised (Not Many – Try watchign a fight in slow motion).

I agree that MMA is a very tuff sport, but i wouldn’t just assume that it is more dangerous then boxing or football for that matter. The facts speak for themselves and the studies prove those facts.

by pjred13 on Jun 22, 2010 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions

that's the thing,

You’re convincing the wrong guy. I need no facts. I wouldn’t refute your facts or opinions on this manner regardless, since I clearly am obsessed with this sport lol. But, that takes nothing away from how much more brutal the appearance of Sobral (from Mo), Lindland (from Vitor), Liddell (from everyone), Jardine (from Wandy), Quarry (from Franklin), Bisping (from Hendo), and countless others almost each card (more then monthly) are portrayed to the nay sayers lying on their backs looking to the heavens, allowing us to temporarily see in to their souls. Its pretty surreal sometimes. Convincing some ppl, is impossible when they see images like that. I love MMA, but even for me that rigid corpse moment can be a little uncomfortable.

This post makes more sense then your original one

But you didnt say this in your original post…you said:

“In boxing and K1 when a fighter goes down, they get a count to allow the brain to recover, and allow the ref assessment if damage. In MMA, if the fighters on his game, he’ll already of followed up with a shot or 2/3/4…before the ref gets in there. Can be very dangerous. I see where these guys are coming from”

Two completely different points…I give you an A+ for the backtracking effort though.

by pjred13 on Jun 22, 2010 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

and i give you an A+ for idiocy and incapability to comprehend thought

How am I back tracking? I’m presenting the opposition’s point of view. I’m showing you their side of the story, since you clearly are too blind to admit why it has troubles being regulated. Because you and Sport Sciene (you think) say that boxing is more dangerous doesn’t make it fact.

I tried to avoid a pointless argument, with endless google’s to prove one another wrong, since I’m in support of MMA’s legalization, but you clearly want to argue so, well done. Go ahead, copy and paste away. And if you want to use Sport Science as your example, give a look at who’s punch hurts the most to start from their program.

Rampages punch annihilated the bare knuckle hockey punch, and heftily beat out the pro boxers punch. There is multiple sources to refute and support each side and claim, but ppl like you tend to just accept what helps their side, and ignore what hurts it.

Reality is a word you choose to accept or deny. I think you’ve made your choice a long time ago.

if i may

Though it may be true that the MMA fighter punches harder, I believe it has been proven that multiple blows to the head while allowing a fighter to recover brings on the onset of dementia pugilistica (butchered that spelling) much quicker due to fighting with concussions.

that having been said, I believe MMA to appear much more brutal, which is why it is so hard to sell it to certain people.

SCIENCE!!!!!

But seriously i think we’re obviously all on the same page here. LEGALIZE IT! (both herb “dean” and MMA)

by Body Triangle on Jun 22, 2010 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions

you’re right on. the standing 8 is the most dangerous thing about boxing. mutliple concussions in one night.

Can’t argue with the dead guy look tho. Honbuckle-Gono kinda freaked me out, even tho it was the most awesome thing ever.

I don’t watch much boxing, but from what you guys have said, are there really just less brutal looking KO’s?

ah

there are plenty of brutal KOs, but they usually crumble. that stiffen up and go down thing…seems to me to be unique to MMA and K-1…or at least rarer in boxing.

Worby

I have no problem understanding what you were writting. You made two completely different points. Your first point was that MMA is more dangerous (not gonna paste your original statement again), and then you said that it LOOKS more dangerous. Those are two completely different things, and the only reason why you changed your point is because you got called out on it. I comprehend fine…

P.S. Arguing that because Boxing gives at 8 count it is safer then MMA is ridiculous and not based on any sort of fact…That has also been proven to cause more long term damage…And I didnt get that info from “Sports Science” or anything like that…

by pjred13 on Jun 22, 2010 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point about the visual effect of the knock out. Most peopl don’t care about facts its what they see, and a guy knocked staring at the lights flat on his back is akward at times. Even though tests have proven boxing is worse. People only believe what they see. Not a lot of people change my mind, but you just did. I agree with what your sayin

Yeah man

as times change, so does science, but people who grew up thinking a certain way are very prone to a static-mindset. Hatton got flattened fuck! But, still, he didn’t zombify like we see monthly in MMA. Also, the monthly cards allow for more to attack for nay sayers, vs boxings one big event semi annually. And more then often we see today’s big boxing fights going the distance as well, which in turn has made boxing appear a lot less barbaric when in comparison.

by daniel worby on Jun 22, 2010 12:35 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

actually

The standing 8 count is actually the exact thing that makes boxing more dangerous than MMA. A knockdown or knockout is actually a concussion. Taking a couple extra shots after being knocked out is still usually a single concussion.

The standing 8 count allows boxers to receive a concussion and continue fighting, often to receive 2 or 3 more concussions in the same night. It’s actually shocking to me that there aren’t more deaths in boxing. The biggest problem with HS football has been multiple deaths due to kids playing the week after receiving a concussion. In boxing, they do it in the same damn night. Albeit, it tends not to be nearly as fatal for those over the age of 18, but boxing is much worse for longterm health, except in the case of no-defense-brawlers like Chuck, Shonie Carter, and Chris Lytle

by Stillberry on Jun 22, 2010 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

sorry man, but you guys are making it sound as if

every knockdown in boxing is a concussion. More then often, its getting rocked like almost every mma fight. Just cause you drop to a knee or take a ref break up from some punches, doesn’t necessarily mean the guy was concussed. I can agree on some counts, but the truth of the matter is that as in all physical sports, the gray area has lots of ifs/ands/buts, and that gray area added to the brutal appearance to non knowledgeable viewers, accompanied with the relatively young age of the sport is leading to these problems.

Again, I’m not on the boxing side, just shedding some light.

recent reading of Chris Nowinski’s book and articles has led me to believe that nearly every instance of getting rocked is a concussion, albeit possibly minor, but still a significant instance of brain trauma

Come on Worby…If you are going to bring it and take the other side’s position then at least back it up with some “real” information. Just an FYI for next time.

Worby,

You don’t have Bull Riding in Canada? Dude, Man vs 2500 lb beast is WAY more dangerous than man vs man, no? I would also put extreme sports like skateboarding or street biking as much more dangerous as well.

When comparing MMA to other combat sports like boxing, it’s hard to really gauge the level of danger because it seems that boxers accrue more long term effects due to their brain being bashed with thick gloves without their neural networks having a chance to switch off. I would think that smaller gloves is safer because once your hit cleanly, you’re out. You don’t have to worry about a 12 round thrashing which would cause horrible long term effects. On the other hand, the cuts and potential for broken limbs are more severe but that doesn’t affect long-term health. Anyone wanna way in on this?

by haglnuts on Jun 22, 2010 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree in principle

Obviously there are acceptions to the rule (I.E. Griffin vs. Bonnar, A ton of Wanderlai fights, and etc.)…There are also a few fighters that a prown to all out, chin up hands flying fights…But agree with you for the very most part. Plus, the majority of MMA fighters have far less fights/rounds then boxers do. I think that plays a huge role too.

“Most of us believe this is a brutal sport. Some of us are willing, however, to legalize it because of the money it brings in, and I find that a pretty horrific type of attitude and position to have, because we’re trying to stop bullying in schools, we’re trying to stop gang violence and domestic violence.”

Yes, because there’s a direct correlation between watching MMA, and school bullying, and gang and domestic violence. Oh wait, what’s that? You mean there aren’t any facts to back that up?

Get real, Reilly.

by Hardcase on Jun 22, 2010 10:26 AM EDT reply actions

CHECK SOME FACTS AND HISTORY

First of all, to say that MMA is attributed to school bullying and domestic violence is insulting to martial arts. Martial arts teaches respect and discipline, you cant compare people who take out their personal issues on others with professional fighters who train for a living. Martial arts have turned so many peoples lives around. Even Chael Sonnen said with MMA your told straight up what your getting. These politicians have spent too much time behind a desk in their secluded lives. I have seen many teenagers who train in MMA, and yes some are egotistical bad apples, but most learn from it.

Maybe

If they legalized MMA in New York they could get some of these violent kids on the street to focus their frustration on an actual sport. Where do you think most of the great boxers come from? Mike Tyson would be dead right now probably or in prison if it weren’t for boxing. The same could be said for MMA. New York has the biggest violence problem, this Reilly guy should think some more about his people rather than what his old fashioned, uptight conservative morals are telling him. MMA could help New York, would help it.

by theworldismine on Jun 22, 2010 10:32 AM EDT reply actions

well not exactly...

I agree with the heart of your post, but regardless of what you see in movies, new york actually is one of the safer states in the country and new york city is one of the safest cities in the world. NY ranks 31s in terms of crime out of the country. It is actually safer than the mean streets of Oregon and Delaware.

interestin, didn't even know that, but even around the projects?

Because Im talking more about the demographics in NY where theres alot of drug violence and crime, if I’m correct that is; places like Marcy, Queensbridge, Harlem. Undeniably, there’s a lot of poor kids in New York who will eventually become dealers or other facets of the drug game, even worse, users. I think MMA could actually combat this, if schools could open up for affordable prices. Thanks for the info though

What difference does it make?

Unless you’re going to block PPV’s, Spike, Versus, HD Net, Showtime, NBC, MAV TV and all the other stations that air mma then it doesn’t matter if they fight in MSG or Vegas or Newark. The kids still watch the fights. The only thing Riley is going to do is make sure MSG and the surrounding hotels don’t make a penny off it. The kids he’s worried about don’t go to the fights anyway. I’ve been to a few, I don’t know if I can remember ANY kids and if there were kids there they were damn few. The smart thing would be to allow it but impose an modest mma tax that goes to educating children that this is a sport and not just random fighting or something along those lines.
