Cung Le vs Scott Smith rematch confirmed for Strikeforce: 'Fedor vs Werdum'

Cung_le_vs_scott_smith_medium_medium

Hard-hitting middleweight Scott Smith will indeed be out to prove that his sensational come-from-behind knockout of ex-Strikeforce 185-pound Champion, Cung Le, was no fluke when the middleweights hook 'em again at Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Werdum" from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on June 26.

The promotion today made the long-rumored match up official for its upcoming event on Showtime.

"Hands of Steel" first met Le back at Strikeforce: "Evolution" last December, where the part-time movie star battered him for the better part of three rounds. Apparently, Le forgot to read the manual on Smith's third round heroics and got caught in one of his patented Hail Mary "miracles" in the bout's final minutes.

Repeat -- or retaliation? We will find out soon enough.

Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Werdum," which will air live on Showtime at 10 p.m. ET on fight night, will feature Fedor Emelianenko taking on grappling wizard Fabricio Werdum in the main event. Current Strikeforce Women's Champion Cristian "Cyborg" Santos will also be in action against Jan "Cuddles" Finney.

why is cung a bum? super fun to watch and comes to fight...

hate for no reason?

I can’t believe Rashad ‘Sugad’ all over Rampage at 114. Quittin Jackson was a bad choice from the start and I think he needs to now consider retirement. Fedor too!

His flashy shit is a lot more impressive and entertaining to watch

than Anderson Silvas’. Cung Le is always entertaining. He could have easily taken the safe option and stopped engaging Smith in his last fight, and danced around till the time ran out, but he didn’t . He wanted to keep up the action until the very end. He lost because of it (and Scotts head as well as hands of steel), but I had to give him credit for that. Scotts chin is absolutely amazing for taking punishment, the Pete Sell and Nick Diaz fights were brutal. Nate Quarry has a chin on him as well, but you really have to wonder how much more of that he should be taking.

cung is going to demiloish smith this time!

hem was abusing Smith for the entire fight til, he went on cruise control, and got caught! That cant possibly happen again! Le, is the vastly supperior striker, and wont be battling ring rust this time around.

Smiths body will get battered with kicks!

Kev can hate all he wants, Im not a big Le fan, but he is fun to watch, and he has a great chance against any other 1 dimensional strikers. He is actually one of the best 1 dimensional strikers in mma!

DREAM FIGHT:

Cung Le vs. Melvin Manhoef!!!!! Book that shit NOW!!!!

I agree Freenow. Cung Le has great form and is fun to watch.

With all due respect Kev, I think Frank Shamrock’s broken arm attests to the fact that Le is not all flash.

Well, that one in the center: he had a flap holster and he was in no itchin' hurry. And the one second from the left: he had scared eyes, he wasn't gonna do nothin'. But that one on the far left: he had crazy eyes. Figured him to make the first move.

do you really need an answer to that

sf isn’t as deep s Worby makes them out to be!

by kevjack115 on Jun 2, 2010 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

of course thats a part of the reason

I don’t claim them to be deep in fact I say they should be given leniency to matches like this for that very reason. You just claim all they have is Shields and Diaz. I’m not that naïve to agree.

Perhaps my post below may help a bit.

im not opposed to this rematch at all

I want Smith to win again for sure, but I understand what happened is rare and out of nowhere so I get them wanting Smith to prove he can do it again. Its not outlandish like some say.

I mean look at Russow. If they wanted to do him vs Duff 2 I’d get why. If he proves it again so be it. If not and its entertaining they have a possible rubber match set up.

Go Smith!

Ahk.. Hell no it wasn't

Duffee had one fight in the UFC before this, he’s an unproven, untested fighter and he’s a 253 lbs guy with no fat on his body. I mean if the guy was a big name and had a reputation as a fearsome striker with tons of experience I could see it being an “all time” shocker. However…

I can’t count how many times I’ve seen someone with that type of physique lose a fight cause they gassed and got slower/sloppy.

I think he's got a ton of potential

Depends on how he rebounds off this loss, but as it stands; unless Duffee goes on to become a destroyer in the UFC HW division, I can’t really justify labeling this come back as one of the greatest of all time.

why rematch?

The first match wasn’t controversial, why do a rematch? Shouldn’t they fight other people or is strikeforce out of matchups?

and he was getting bulldozed the whole fight until he won

lol exactly... why is this hard to understand?

If its not a fluke prove it. If it is so be it. I dunno bout you guys but if I’m Smith and you pay me, and I win, then you say “Would you fight him again next?”, I’d say “I make same amount, and skyrocket to the top if I win?”, the inevitable “Yes.”, seals the deal for me.

I wanna see Manhoef/Lawler 2 as well. They were entertaining as hell.

There is no such thing as a fluke in MMA.

Cung couldn’t finish and paid the price. Duffee couldn’t finish and Russow owned him in the 3rd. In MMA the end is just one punch away. There are no flukes.

well I guess it's just a matter of definition

From Webster:
1 : an accidentally successful stroke at billiards or pool
2 : a stroke of luck

So the victory was neither a stroke of luck in my opinion nor accidental. It was a direct result of Duffee not able to finish and Russow landing just 2 punches that were needed.

I think if we knew that Duffee has no chin, noone would even be talking about it being a fluke.

I will go with 2) stroke of luck with his Homer Simpson way of winning. Take punches until the other guy gets tired and then win.

there was controversy

Read the posts in this thread. Everyone says it was fluke. Half say he can repeat this, half say Smith gets him like first thought. When you’re losing a 5 round fight by 4 rounds, and getting obliterated, then TKO a guy, it raises eyebrows on whether you could EVER do somthing like that again.

I'd a say a fluke is more like Lutter vs Eastman or Randleman vs Cro Cop

Where the guy is getting his ass kicked and his opponent is still showing no signs of tiring, then a bomb out of nowhere. I saw Duffee try to finish the guy 3 times in rd 1 and I knew he wasn’t going to be able to get it done after that.

Thing is, I don’t think there’s anything controversial about finishing your opponent. The results speak for themselves. Maybe if there was an unrecognized illegal strike that precipitated it or something like that, but that didn’t happen in the Smith/Le fight.

I mean, to pull a random example from some time ago, should Kos have gotten an immediate rematch w/ Drew Fickett ? Because he was beating him right up until Drew slapped that RNC on him.

The only controversy I see is that Cung Le fans and promoter expected a Le win, but Smith didn’t get that script.

I’m not against a rematch between the two per se, but an immediate rematch like this seems to disrespect what Smith pulled off in the fight, IMO.
