Bellator 22: Ben Askren dominates Dan Hornbuckle to win Welterweight Tournament in Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (June 17, 2010) - Bellator Fighting Championships crowned its second Season 2 champion Thursday night as former NCAA wrestling superstar and U.S. Olympian Ben Askren put on a grappling clinic to neutralize knockout artist and rising MMA star Dan Hornbuckle in a dominating and well-rounded performance.
The 25-year-old University of Missouri product drew from the vocal support of an adoring crowd at the Kansas City Power & Light District to win a unanimous decision victory and complete the metamorphosis from highly touted prospect to full-fledged MMA star that many experts had predicted.
With his new wife Amy watching cageside, Askren (6-0) controlled the fight from the start, taking the veteran Hornbuckle to the mat early on in all three rounds and holding him at bay with his world-class wrestling skills.
Hornbuckle tried to stop the momentum a few times, attempting a triangle choke mid-way through Round 2 and a kimura mid-way through Round 3, but Askren was able to escape both submissions.
"This is exactly the kind of performance we had hoped Ben would put on when we signed him six months ago," Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney said. "He showed some great talent in his first two Bellator fights but saved the best performance for last. It was a tremenously impressive night for Ben all the way around. As an MMA fan, I cannot wait to see his World Title fight against Lyman Good this fall. "
Afterward, Askren told Bellator color commentator Jimmy Smith that he has already shifted his sights to reigning Bellator Welterweight Champion Lyman Good, who he'll face in a title fight later this year.
"Lyman, keep my belt warm," he said as his hometown crowd egged him on. "Shine it up once a week and enjoy it while you can because it's mine, baby."
Joining Askren in the winner's circle was Lisa Ward, the 27-year-old Seattle-based submission artist who improved her pro record to 13-3 and gave fans a sneak preview of what they'll see when she enters the cage as part of Bellator's upcoming Season 3 Women's Tournament beginning in August.
Ward wasted no time locking 19-year-old MMA up-and-comer Stephanie Frausto (2-2) into a tight rear-naked choke, putting her to sleep and ending the fight via technical submission just 2:01 into Round 1. Ward said after the fight that she is hoping for tournament matchup with Megumi Fujii, the world's No. 1 pound-for-pound female fighter, who handed Ward one of her three losses during a 2007 showdown in Canada.
"I would love another shot at Megumi," Ward said. "We definitely have some unfinished business."
Earlier, 24-year-old Missouri native Jose Vega delivered yet another Bellator "YouTube moment" with a highlight-reel knockout of North Carolina-based jiu-jitsu specialist Jarrod "The Wild Card" Card just 39.8 seconds into the first round of their "Bantamweight Feature Fight."
After setting it up with a pair of stiff leg kicks, Vega (8-3) connected with a left hook to Card's jaw, knocking him unconscious and dropping him to the canvas, bringing Vega's many hometown fans to their feet.
"I'm lost for words," an emotional Vega said afterward. "I've never had a KO before, but my hands have improved - [former Bellator fighters] Brian Davidson, James Krause and Tyler Stinson have been helping me with that. I saw the opening and I just went for it."
In the first televised fight of the night, IFL and M1 veteran Raphael Davis improved his record to 9-1 by dominating Arena Football League veteran and one-time Nebraska state high school wrestling champion Demetrius Richards (5-3). Davis took the fight to the ground early on and quickly took Richards' back, wearing him down with hammer fists and a flurry of knees to the body before Richards submitted to punches just 2:51 into Round 1.
The event also played host to five Local Feature Fights:
- Tyler Stinson def. Leonardo Pecanha via rear-naked choke (1:42)
- Rudy Bears def. Brian Green via rear-naked choke (3:49)
- Cole Konrad def. John Orr via unanimous decision
- Jared Downing def. Chad Vandenberg via rear-naked choke (11:35)
Fans who missed Thursday night's action can watch all the best moments this weekend during special highlight shows on NBC, Telemundo and the cable network mun2. Check your local listings for exact dates and times.
Bellator returns to action next Thursday night from the Fourth Street Live entertainment district in downtown Louisville, Ky., where Bellator will conclude its second season with the championship rounds of its Middleweight and Featherweight Tournaments.
The two championship fights and the rest of the Bellator 23 featured card will again be televised live on FOX Sports Net.

I turned this fight off after the second round.
Don’t know what the fuck Dan was doing on his knees holding tight onto ben’s arm but he fucking lost me a huge fucking chunk of my bankroll. It was so fucking obvious that when dan didn’t tie him down, he was scrambling everywhere. Fuck i am still pissed.

you are cryin because your girl (amm sorry…. your “fighter”) lost via unanimous decision? yeah it was dan’s fault, because askren is a terrible fighter and a “boring wrestler” right believe me i enjoy knock outs and submissions but you gotta admit when a guy tooled the other guy, dont be a bitch and be a man for the first time in your life… fucker!!!
Believe in the Power of One
he never said anything about a boring wrestler you fucking tard.
nice try but you failed with the whole “you only like ko’s and submissions” ploy.
NNR, own this bitch please.

what the f are you talking about?!
who the fuck said anything about it being a boring fight? Dan lost the fight because he wasn’t doing anything but holding to his arm and waste time. When he didnt Askren was flying scrambling everywhere cartwheel guard passing and blah blah which left him open for a lot of things. I turned it off becuase Dan’s strategy was pissing me off.

his fight with ryan thomas told me that
he scrambles a lot and makes tons of openings. If he was getting into bad position with the “Tank Engine,” Dan can easily catch him but instead hornbuckle locked him down and just sat there. It’s as if he had never any tape on ben.

So you've known him all his life and know that if he'd man up
this would be the first time in his life? dude, quit being a douche and just say your man won and get it done with. Is all the shit talk really necessary? NNR never said anything negative about anyone…just was upset because the person he picked didn’t perform well and he lost mone on it. You’re reading too much into it. Time for YOU to man up and stop being childish about shit.

my point here is...
i dont know why some people bitch around about wrestler being succesfull in mma, its not their fault if they won with their strenght, everybody said that evans, gsp, askren, etc are not good fighters because they won with their strenghts… maybe in bussiness point of view they are not very succesfull but they got the money, they got the win, and they keep fighting healthy, because if you look at liddell, wanderlei or even crocop, they fighting time is no longer succesfull because of their stupid strategy of “you hit me, i hit you”… in fighting and in life, the 90% of wins belong to the smartest people, no the strongest…
its all about strategy, if you like punches a bunches and spectacle go watch wwe or something…
its nothing personal against NNR… im sorry guys…
;D

i actually won some on Askren at +120

A
That’s the wrestling I don’t mind watching. Completely pulverized Dan’s face.
I was rooting for Hornbuckle, but I’m very impressed by Askren.
Anderson Silva will fall via brutal Republican dry-humping.

Awesome win Ben
I was also rooting for Hornbuckle but you can’t deny Ben’s utter domination. You have to believe that if this went 5-6 more rounds, Dan would be fast asleep.
Minowaman forever
It would take an 8 or 9 round fight for Askren to actually put someone away?

I’m probably being unfair to him because he’s obviously a wrestler first and foremost, which I generally hate. And because he looks like Sideshow Bob, who I also hate.

lmao
Between him and Kos we got a live Fraggle Rock movie.

Good win for Askren
I was going for Hornbuckle too. No lay and pray there. Thats how to do something after a takedown.

fitch, guida, and maynard are bad enough.

food for thought
I hate how these guys (most notably Askren’s last two opponents, Hornbuckle and Thomas) knew they were coming into a fight against a Olympic Wrestler yet their takedown defense was nonexistent. The entire month Hornbuckle knew he was going to be fighting Askren he should’ve solely concentrated on the sprawl aspect of his game. I miss the guys with mentalities like Chuck Liddell. Those guys who made it impossible to be taken down to prevent a grapplers execution of their game plan. The wrestler turned mixed martial artist that said, "I like to stand up and bang so I’m going to make sure nobody takes me down to the ground." The last person with that fighting mentality now is BJ Penn now that Liddell is out of the mix. And to a lesser extent, A. Silva but he hasn’t been in there against a solid wrestler since Hendo.
Instead of complaining about the wrestlers dominating the fights with a solid takedown and smothering top games, everyone should complain about the opponents who can’t even put up a fight to prevent the takedown much less get up when the opportunity is available. Several times through Hornbuckle’s fight he had an opportunity to get back up but went for a lost-cause submission attempt. Every time Askren came running in for the takedown (no striking to set it up, just straight up running in) Hornbuckle didn’t brace himself for the sprawl, he braced himself for the fall. Failure.
