UFC Quick Quote: No quit in Rich Franklin against Chuck Liddell ... even with broken arm
"I was just happy the fight was over. I knew my arm was broken in the fight. I definitely wasn't going to quit -- I've broken bones before and continued fighting. But, there was a part of me wondering how I was going to, what strategy I was going to use, to win the fight with a broken left arm in the second and third rounds.... I would say maybe two minutes in [to the fight] is when that kick came. I was having trouble when I was down on the ground and trying to get up, posting and all that stuff as well. Chuck caught with me with a couple of punches and I got a little stupid standing in front of him. But it looked like he was getting himself tired, so I was kind of just letting him make himself tired, putting a lot of energy into shots that weren't landing.... There was nothing that really rocked me -- just a few that kind of put me back. I was fine. He follows up big when he thinks he has you hurt. I just tried to stay tight and hit him with a lead hook that caught him on the chin.... I don't want to be known as the guy who put him out of the sport or whatever. I don't like the thought of that."
-- Former middleweight champion Rich Franklin talks about his thought process after sustaining a broken left forearm early in his main event fight against Chuck Liddell at UFC 115 last night (June 12). "Ace" blocked a high kick and soon began to hear the bones "clicking," meaning that something was more than likely terribly wrong. Despite the injury, Franklin kept battling and, as the seconds ticked away to close round one, he landed a short right that put the "Iceman" clean out. Fortunately, Franklin -- who has endured broken hands, noses and other bones in previous fights -- didn't have to worry about how he would proceed if things went longer. Impressed or no?

Looks like Rich drop kicked Chuck in the nuts
That’s right girl, let me whisper in your ear
Baby wake up, we’re naked and we’re humpin’ sexy

LOL
It was a good fight, Chuck looked good mixing it up too! I couldnt believe it ended that way.
think about it
if Liddell doesnt run into Franklins fist with 5 seconds left, round ends 10-9 Chuck.
Franklin has to go to his corner with a broken arm, pain is easily ignored during the middle of a fight by the endocrine systems releasing adrenniline (sp) but when the round is over the levels will drop and he will be much more aware of the pain from his injury while he sits on the stool. I believe its a whole different fight if this happens
Just a theory

but you know what you dont talk about?
what COULD of happened. what happened was chuck got knocked out
live simply.
I thought franklin got the best of most of the exchanges. It would of been a close round, but coulda shoulda woulda. Bottom line the round is 5 min not 4 min 55 seconds. So slice it however chuck lost and even if he had won round he wasn’t dominating

agree
I was really impressed with that!
There was a bunch of new stuff from chuck in that first 4 mins I was stoked, really disappointing that he can’t take a shot, but he is improving in other areas.
I can imagine how frustrating it is for him =\
Shogun lost a close decision! Everyone get crazy!
gotta give it up to chuck
He went doing what it does, he had to feel pretty good about the round, and even though, he heard the ten second tap, he went in to give the fans what they wanted ,a KO. chuck has never been in a boring fight, and always laid it all on the line, even when rashad danced around him for two rounds chuck refused to let it be a boring fight and went in swinging. there are so many fighters that care more about winning than entertaining the fans, chuck was one the few who just refused to bore us to a victory, for that i will always love and respect the guy, in all of his loses except to rampge he held his own agenst the very best of the lhw’s in his late 30’s to 40. Wandy, page, fedor, hendo, nogs, jardine, jens, leban, bj, and chuck, these fighters are a dieing breed, but i love them for there efforts for trying to put on a show rather than taking the safe way to a victory. WAR old school!
Agree
Totally agree, that’s what I love about chuck!! It’s just a pity his punch resistance has left him or he’d still be a force. He looked good lastnight, but I’m glad it wasn’t a rampage or a big puncher catching him cos his jaw just can’t rake it anymore. It’s so sad to see because he did look good and in shape!! No shame in going out like that..WAR the ICEMAN!!!

ya..
im my opinion he gave his fans everything they wanted in this fight, except the win but a great showing may even be more important..

BUT, he did take Wanderlei down with 30 seconds left in the 3rd of thier epic fight
That fight was 14 and a half minutes of “jump out your seat” standup exchanges and then instead of ending it toe to toe like the entire fight, Chuck took Wanderlei down t secure the round. For some reason, I will always remember that.
I AM SOMETIMES BIASED - Get over it!!!!!!!
Then you are impossible to please.
That was one of the most exciting fights in UFC history, and for the most part, Chuck was the one moving forward. Everyone always talks about how Chuck never faced great strikers, but Wand was to Pride what Chuck was to the UFC, and Wand was considered one of the most dangerous strikers. Chuck may have taken Wand down 2 times, but he spent most of the fight outstriking him as well.

Him and Wanderlie
Are awesome that way!
Props to Chuck!
Rampage is pretty good that way too.
Shogun lost a close decision! Everyone get crazy!
Yeah stupid fighters wanting to win first and entertain second. That’s a stupid statement. These guys do this to get paid and the more you win the more you get paid. I appreciate when they try and put on a show, but don’t falut them for putting a W first
by LOKIE on Jun 13, 2010 11:12 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
you dont really make more for winning than you do for entertaining, guys like machida and fitch kept winning and still didnt get paid good til there 8th or 9th fight, but guys like vera who were winning and being exciting were making double the money
ppv buys is what pays, whoever sells those gets bank
by randy murders on Jun 14, 2010 8:11 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah and how long did vera make. The money, before he had to re structure his contract or hit the bricks? I agree if your a draw, but outside of a few fighters, you don’t get paid to be exciting but lose all the time

How anyone can dislike Rich is beyond me… shit just reading this made me respect him so Damn much. A true warrior. This guy fights because he enjoys it, no matter titles or whatever he just lives to compete. I knew his arm broke after the kick….
by AintNoSunshine on Jun 13, 2010 6:55 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Yeh for sure Rich has always been one of my favs
Im just shocked that he doesnt have that many fans.
Open up the Shit Gates and where the Hell was Marv?
he does..
just remember that the internet MMA fans are far more negative then the normal MMA fan, they only point out negatives and rarley enjoy a good show..

Very True
Plus internet fans only care about what you have done lately. Look at Machida for instance. He loses one fight and goes from unbeatable to a flash in the pan.

Of course you’re generalizing though, because I will always be a Machida fan. Surely there are more Internet fans who think so.

Yes. I am still a fan too, and I am sure there are others, but I don’t see nearly as many as I did before the Shogun fights.

Casuals are very fickle mind
Some are very quick to turn on guys if they’re no longer winning.

I know you were
You oversimplified things, there are a lot of casuals who turn on their favourites after a bad loss and there are hardcores on here who stay loyal to their favourite until they retire. John G, RoB, NNR and dlocc are all very loyal fans.

Its really a shame cause Tito would of lost to Chuck.
I think they should let Chuck fight Tito so he can go out with a win.
Open up the Shit Gates and where the Hell was Marv?

GSP doesn't use roids
Because Gsp is the best WelterWeight to ever grace Earth and always will be. No one will do what he has and he’s just getting started.
Also, I love Chuck, but Tito would beat him and Tito is funny. I like both of em. But Chucks gotta go now so, GO TITO!

Tito has shit for stand up. When has he ever won a fight without needing the takedown.

Agreed
Rich is the man, he never talks shit, makes excuses or refuses fights and he continues to man up when he picks up injuries and fight on regardless. He us a true professional and a class act, I’ll always have a lot of respect for him as a person and a fighter.

I was rooting for Chuck
But Franklin is a hella nice and classy guy and always has been.
Since being dethroned he’s taken whatever the UFC has thrown his way.
I don’t know how anyone could not like him.
Shogun lost a close decision! Everyone get crazy!
i liked both and was torn who to root for and was sad i knew
..someone would have to lose. But I wish it wasn’t such a devastating manner for chucks sake. But as for ace I’m glad he was able to do that and silence, perhaps, a few more critics.

I don't like decisions
as I like decisive fights, but I really wanted this to be a close decision where they both looked good.
I got my wish with Wanderlie/Chuck, but alas not this time.
Shogun lost a close decision! Everyone get crazy!
LoL!!!
That shit had me laughing pretty good.
What is so funny about that?
Stupid if you ask me.
"I just can't wait to hit Chuck with my balls!" ~Tito Ortiz.
How can you not totally respect Rich Franklin?
When you think about the guys who really represent the sport in a positive way and every fight shows the true fighting spirit and toughness and is class all the way, he may be the UFC’s best representative.
Yeah, it would have been interesting if the fight continued into the 2nd round.
Chuck’s mouth was also open as he got hit with that right from Franklin….never helps absorbing a punch to the face.
Great career for Liddell. Franklin is still a factor in either division I think.
100 % agree sudnvictory
I think Rich is Still # 2 or3 at MW. And i have him cracking into the top 10 in LHW
Open up the Shit Gates and where the Hell was Marv?
Absolutely
It’s just unfortunate you have Dana pushing all the shenanigans on TUF with all the little punks acting ignorant and here you have what is really the heart and soul of mma in Franklin.

What's crazy!!!
What’s crazy is when Chuck takes Rich down and uses his broken arm to hold himself up!!!! I have always been a fan of Rich I hope he bounces back soon. He has had a lot of injuries in the past four years. I couldn’t agree more with you guys. Rich is for sure a top 3 MW, and I would rank him in the top 10 LHW’s. Can’t wait for him to heal and get back in there. Now does he get Forrest or does Forrest fight someone else since Franklin will be out for awhile? Maybe we will see Forrest/Ortiz 3?
Very impressed.
I’m not a wuss or anything, but fighting w/ a broken arm? Are you kidding me?
I'm your huckleberry.
I heard Dana White Say It Once
There is just something about a true fighter. A True fighter breaks a bone or loses a tooth and they keep going. A regular guy (like myself) loses a tooth and I’m f*cking screaming and holding my mouth while I run away lol!
Give a man to fish and feed him for a day. Kick his stupid ass and maybe he will leave you alone.
Don't sweat it Chuck!!!! there's other things you can pursue

I like bacon...and Rashad Evans is a pussy
Tough as nails
Rich has fought with broken bones multiple times and he has the heart of a true champion. Some people want him against bones jones right away but I would like to see him against Thiago Silva first.
i even think franklin missed the last shot on purpose classy dude!
"whats the difference if Bruce Springsteen is his shidoshi?"
no way he did
rich is a nice guy but come on its still a fight, u think he would risk breaking his wrist on the floor just for chuck, i dont think so

It Actually Does Look Like He Missed It On Purpose
It was way off and he did seem to hesitate at the peak of the punch
by AintNoSunshine on Jun 14, 2010 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions
That’s because he was probably already more than halfway convinced Chuck wasn’t getting up. He was still caught in the frenzy of attack, but the necessity in his mind was gone.
