UFC Quick Quote: No quit in Rich Franklin against Chuck Liddell ... even with broken arm

Franklin_liddell_ufc115_medium

"I was just happy the fight was over. I knew my arm was broken in the fight. I definitely wasn't going to quit -- I've broken bones before and continued fighting. But, there was a part of me wondering how I was going to, what strategy I was going to use, to win the fight with a broken left arm in the second and third rounds.... I would say maybe two minutes in [to the fight] is when that kick came. I was having trouble when I was down on the ground and trying to get up, posting and all that stuff as well. Chuck caught with me with a couple of punches and I got a little stupid standing in front of him. But it looked like he was getting himself tired, so I was kind of just letting him make himself tired, putting a lot of energy into shots that weren't landing.... There was nothing that really rocked me -- just a few that kind of put me back. I was fine. He follows up big when he thinks he has you hurt. I just tried to stay tight and hit him with a lead hook that caught him on the chin.... I don't want to be known as the guy who put him out of the sport or whatever. I don't like the thought of that."

-- Former middleweight champion Rich Franklin talks about his thought process after sustaining a broken left forearm early in his main event fight against Chuck Liddell at UFC 115 last night (June 12). "Ace" blocked a high kick and soon began to hear the bones "clicking," meaning that something was more than likely terribly wrong. Despite the injury, Franklin kept battling and, as the seconds ticked away to close round one, he landed a short right that put the "Iceman" clean out. Fortunately, Franklin -- who has endured broken hands, noses and other bones in previous fights -- didn't have to worry about how he would proceed if things went longer. Impressed or no?

LOL

It was a good fight, Chuck looked good mixing it up too! I couldnt believe it ended that way.

by JV. on Jun 13, 2010 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions

think about it

if Liddell doesnt run into Franklins fist with 5 seconds left, round ends 10-9 Chuck.
Franklin has to go to his corner with a broken arm, pain is easily ignored during the middle of a fight by the endocrine systems releasing adrenniline (sp) but when the round is over the levels will drop and he will be much more aware of the pain from his injury while he sits on the stool. I believe its a whole different fight if this happens

Just a theory

I thought franklin got the best of most of the exchanges. It would of been a close round, but coulda shoulda woulda. Bottom line the round is 5 min not 4 min 55 seconds. So slice it however chuck lost and even if he had won round he wasn’t dominating

agree

I was really impressed with that!

There was a bunch of new stuff from chuck in that first 4 mins I was stoked, really disappointing that he can’t take a shot, but he is improving in other areas.

I can imagine how frustrating it is for him =\

gotta give it up to chuck

He went doing what it does, he had to feel pretty good about the round, and even though, he heard the ten second tap, he went in to give the fans what they wanted ,a KO. chuck has never been in a boring fight, and always laid it all on the line, even when rashad danced around him for two rounds chuck refused to let it be a boring fight and went in swinging. there are so many fighters that care more about winning than entertaining the fans, chuck was one the few who just refused to bore us to a victory, for that i will always love and respect the guy, in all of his loses except to rampge he held his own agenst the very best of the lhw’s in his late 30’s to 40. Wandy, page, fedor, hendo, nogs, jardine, jens, leban, bj, and chuck, these fighters are a dieing breed, but i love them for there efforts for trying to put on a show rather than taking the safe way to a victory. WAR old school!

by Blazy j on Jun 13, 2010 6:33 PM EDT reply actions

Agree

Totally agree, that’s what I love about chuck!! It’s just a pity his punch resistance has left him or he’d still be a force. He looked good lastnight, but I’m glad it wasn’t a rampage or a big puncher catching him cos his jaw just can’t rake it anymore. It’s so sad to see because he did look good and in shape!! No shame in going out like that..WAR the ICEMAN!!!

by the real mo on Jun 13, 2010 6:42 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

ya..

im my opinion he gave his fans everything they wanted in this fight, except the win but a great showing may even be more important..

BUT, he did take Wanderlei down with 30 seconds left in the 3rd of thier epic fight

That fight was 14 and a half minutes of “jump out your seat” standup exchanges and then instead of ending it toe to toe like the entire fight, Chuck took Wanderlei down t secure the round. For some reason, I will always remember that.

I AM SOMETIMES BIASED - Get over it!!!!!!!

by ViolentMike on Jun 14, 2010 8:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Then you are impossible to please.

That was one of the most exciting fights in UFC history, and for the most part, Chuck was the one moving forward. Everyone always talks about how Chuck never faced great strikers, but Wand was to Pride what Chuck was to the UFC, and Wand was considered one of the most dangerous strikers. Chuck may have taken Wand down 2 times, but he spent most of the fight outstriking him as well.

Yeah stupid fighters wanting to win first and entertain second. That’s a stupid statement. These guys do this to get paid and the more you win the more you get paid. I appreciate when they try and put on a show, but don’t falut them for putting a W first

by LOKIE on Jun 13, 2010 11:12 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

you dont really make more for winning than you do for entertaining, guys like machida and fitch kept winning and still didnt get paid good til there 8th or 9th fight, but guys like vera who were winning and being exciting were making double the money

ppv buys is what pays, whoever sells those gets bank

by randy murders on Jun 14, 2010 8:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah and how long did vera make. The money, before he had to re structure his contract or hit the bricks? I agree if your a draw, but outside of a few fighters, you don’t get paid to be exciting but lose all the time

Casuals are very fickle mind

Some are very quick to turn on guys if they’re no longer winning.

But Franklin is a hella nice and classy guy and always has been.

How can you not totally respect Rich Franklin?

When you think about the guys who really represent the sport in a positive way and every fight shows the true fighting spirit and toughness and is class all the way, he may be the UFC’s best representative.

Yeah, it would have been interesting if the fight continued into the 2nd round.

Chuck’s mouth was also open as he got hit with that right from Franklin….never helps absorbing a punch to the face.

Great career for Liddell. Franklin is still a factor in either division I think.

What's crazy!!!

What’s crazy is when Chuck takes Rich down and uses his broken arm to hold himself up!!!! I have always been a fan of Rich I hope he bounces back soon. He has had a lot of injuries in the past four years. I couldn’t agree more with you guys. Rich is for sure a top 3 MW, and I would rank him in the top 10 LHW’s. Can’t wait for him to heal and get back in there. Now does he get Forrest or does Forrest fight someone else since Franklin will be out for awhile? Maybe we will see Forrest/Ortiz 3?
