Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua: 'I saw Machida dazed and took the opportunity to knock him out'

Machida-out_medium

Props: UFC.com

Quoteworthy:

"I'm very happy, this belt is my big dream! This is my life. I trained hard every day for this. I saw that (Machida) got dazed and was about to go down so I took the opportunity to knock him out. Everything that happened [after UFC 104] just gave me more motivation to win this belt. "

Newly crowned Light Heavyweight Champion Mauricio Rua is ecstatic after knocking out the previously undefeated Lyoto Machida to usurp the 205-pound throne. "Shogun" came up on the wrong end of a unanimous decision at their first encounter last October, but had no intentions of letting the judges have their say in the rematch. After knocking out "The Dragon," the entire UFC light heavyweight division is going to be lining up. Could a Shogun vs. Rampage rematch be in the works? Only if "B.A. Baracus" holds up his end of the bargain against Rashad Evans at UFC 114.

He will be a great champion, no doubt. He has now reached his true potential.

I also hope that Machida will take this as a wake-up call and learn from it. He had never lost before so maybe he hadn’t yet developed his true potential. I hope we will see an even better Machida in the future, he is still one of the top LHW in the world.

No he won't

The way Machida fights now is the way Machida will fight forever. You can’t change a style you’ve been using for 25 year over the course of a training camp.

It’s like Floyd Mayweather Sr. trying to teach Ricky Hatton to be a boxer from a bruiser. It’s just not going to happen.

Shogun has Machida’s # and always will.

exactly.

he can try to use different strategies and try to mix it up but he won’t become “better” hell he’s already 31. Shogun’s a much better kicker and has better boxing defense and faster hands. Doesn’t mean Machida sucks or anything just means Shogun and his style is too good.

I think Machida will get back to the top

And get another opportunity for Rua vs Machida 3. Machida was getting some good shots in of his own but got caught from a Rua strike. These guys are both elite striekrs in their division and one of them had to lose. Don’t count Machida out yet guys.

Agreed

Kimbo won’t cut weight though, he’s too old and talentless and if he wasn’t popular then he wouldn’t be fighting professionally anymore. I’m surprised that he keeps getting cleared to fight with arthritic knees, especially when he refuses to have injections to take away the pain.

I think anyone who fights him just need to weather..

The first few minutes of his storm and then kick the knees a few times and he is done. It is was Mitrione did and it was what Houstons was doing till he decided to run around the cage at full speed. No mma fighter should be done after 3 or 4 leg kicks. On top of that, no MMA fighter with knees in that horrible of shape should step in the cage without knowing how to check a kick!

I am not sure if he sill destroy the Shogun era....

They are both Muay Thai fighters. Anderson is precision and counter vs Rua who is brute power and pressure, pressure, pressure…Babalu is the only one to cleanly beat Shogun. Coleman won because he broke his arm, Forrest obviously beat a physically subpar Shogun not to take away from his win, Machidas win was a decision. Anderson has his funky losses to sub par talent in Ryo Chonan and Takase. Neither Shogun nor Anderson have ever appeared to be physically stunned by punches or kicks in any fight that I can recall. They both have really good BJJ. This could be the super fight of all super fights if you really look at the potential here. Anderson will not walk through Rua, anymore then Rua will walk through Anderson.

As far as Anderson talking about his camp, of course he is going to hype his teamates. Every fighter should be hyping the guys they work out with. Do you think you are going to ever hear a teammate come out and say I don’t want to fight him because I kick his ass in training all the time! Or “Ahh That Paul Filho is a great MW, when he ain’t all jacked up on cocaine, pain killers, and battling himself and his manic depression!” That is what part of being a team mate is.

Good post Monkey

To be fair to Rua, the fight with Sobral was pretty even until he gassed and was subbed. He was very green still in what was only his fourth or fifth fight against a much more experienced and savvy sobral. His BJJ is off the hook now and he’d comfortably tear babalu a new one these days.

Rampage is a much different fighter then he was then....

Also a lot of that fight was in the thai clench in the corners of the ring. There are no corners in the cage and that makes it much harder to keep someone in place to land those knees like that. I don’t know if Rampage could avenge that fight, but I think Rampage vs. Shogun II will be much more competetive…

I think most Machida fans, including myself...

have owned up to it on here. There have been plenty of posts from people saying they were wrong about Shogun.

I think a lot of the people that were against Rua, really didn’t believe he was going to come back to Pride form. I did not. I was a huge Rua fan in Pride and was gun ho about him coming to the UFC. He just didn’t look like he was himself and up to this fight he really had not done anything all that amazing. He had the big L to Forrest (yeah Rua was unhealthy), The Mark Coleman fight (which he got out of by the skin of his teeth), the KO of Chuck (which most just thought was more part of the Liddell sprial down then Rua climb back up), and even the first fight against Machida, there was nothing amazing about that fight (Leg kicks for 25 minutes). It is good to see Rua back hungry, in Pride shape and form, and with a well lit fire under his arse! I for one will not doubt him again and look foward to see him vs. Rampage again and Rua vs. Silva.

I was a fool for ever doubting Shogun. I should be ashamed for never giving him a chance to get healthy. Shogun made Machida look B-level-Just like my bet made me look b-level!

Gloat away my man....

You guys really stuck it out, through all the comments. I wish I had, had more faith in him. It was just so hard to see this Rua, considering what we had seen up to this point. MY friend is a huge Chute Boxe fan, especially Rua, and he kept telling me…The real Rua will be back in the second fight. He even called a first round ko. I was amazed how nothing seemed to phase him. Machida landed some huge knees in the clinch and Rua just kept coming foward like a Muay Thai Robot! I will admit it is good to have the Rua of old back…The way he looked in this fight, I can’t see anyone in the top 10 beating him, imo. Congrats John G., NNR, Roberto, and Hairyarms!

I had a similar conversation about Shogun (T)Ko’ing Machida after the first fight with a guy at work and he looked at me as if I was stupid!!

I said Rua will look to finish him and he was flat out ‘No way anyone can do that to Machida, not Shogun not anyone!’

I’m so glad Rua has hit full stride again. He walked through everything Machida threw at him as if they never landed. People quickly forget just what a focking animal Shogun is.

im not saying he wins at all but i reckon the majority of posters on here would rather see shogun/page than shogun/shad.

by scott1 on May 9, 2010 9:43 AM EDT up reply actions

It the fact it is a diffrent page that's got me worried.

Look page was a wrestler in pride he evolved into a mma fight in the ufc. But he is now just a boxer IMO. He has also not shown me anything that he is trying to work on the hole in his game. I mean let’s look at the Forrest fight Forrest won that match simply by using his leg kicks to slow and cut down Pages movement. However in the Keith fight who if not throw more then the same amount of leg kicks in his fight still would not check the kicks. The to me says he is either stupid or just plain lazy that he will not work on his game. Also shogun biggest strength is his leg kicks. That’s why I see the fight going the same way as before.
However if Shogun fights Rashad it a fight that has not happned. It’s also a fight that either can win Rashad simply by lay and pray and Shogun by ko. Don’t get me wrong Shogun gas more way to win that fight and I would expect him to win but I feel as tho it would be more of a competitive fight for these to too square off instead of a Shogun and Page rematch. U don’t need to agree with everything I’ve said but I hope u at least know were ian coming from now.

good call page is definitately a better fighter whos worse now

if he can close the gap quick and use his wrestling he can definitely make an impact.plus theres always the chance that shogun could get over agressive and be caught by something coming in.if he can look “checking leg kicks” up in the mma dictionary that would put him in good stead aswell.i just think theres 2 ramages, the unmotivated and motivated one and they are 2 different types of animal.good post by the way.

Cheers mate u too

Agree there are two Pages and I for one would like to see the mma fighter. If he can get back on his horse then yes I would rather see him vs Shogun than Rashad vs Shogun. But I guess that’s not up to me or u. It up to Rampage!

by Jamie The Peach Hunter on May 9, 2010 11:02 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Jaimie...

I wrote this somewhere in here I think…But a lot of the first fight between Rampage and Rua was in a thai clench in the corners of a ring. Those corners don’t exsist in a cage and that kind of control is not going to be as easy. While I feel Rampage may still not be up to speed with the kind of lay off he took, I do think Rampage is a lot more devastating then Rashad in his hands. I don’t think Rashad will be able to hold down Rua at all. Rua’s bjj I think is to good. Rua is no Thiago Silva and I think would easily counter wrestle Rashad or grab the hooks and stand up. Thiago caught Rashad and his gas tank didn’t allow him to finish.

I think that Rampage, while he has been plagued with personal issues and ego, still could make a great fight for Rua. When he takes fights personally he is always at his best. When he fought Wandy last, he came out with ill intentions. When he fought Chuck much the same thing. I think he will put the work in to make sure he hurts Rashad, and will be hungry to avenge his L to Rua. Would he beat Rua, maybe not, but Rampage always does best when he is fighting with a chip on his shoulder.

I was a fool for ever doubting Shogun. I should be ashamed for never giving him a chance to get healthy. Shogun made Machida look B-level-Just like my bet made me look b-level!

Shogun already proved that Machida isn’t invincible in their first fight.. He applied the same strategy in their 2nd fight but with more agressiveness.. I think Machida will lose again but not getting KO’ed again.

Not sold on shogun been a dominant champ, time will tell, for some reason, I’m not sure how he would do against bones. Funny thing is bones, lyoto and shogun are my 3 favorite LHW.

Shogun-Lil Nog 2 would be a sick rematch

Bones is a scary good prospect, Rashad, Rampage and Lyoto are still world class fighters and add Andy to the equation and you have 7 world champion caliber fighters at LHW. If Shogun can have a long reign with these 6 great talents gunning for the belt then he has to go down as an all time great.

Proud member of the Brock Pain Train.

Congratulations Jake, Gil and Mo. From the only Maniac to pick all 3 of them.

That's how you fight.

Shogun was PRESSING him hard in the cage. I mean he was lunging at him with like 6 or 7 punches at a time. I think Korean Zombie inspired every mma fighter out there lol.

more people are going to pressure lyoto now!

I'm not afraid of dying, I'm a little bit scared of what comes after

He's been pressured before

but Shogun did an amazing job cutting off the cage. Lyoto was not as “elusive” as I was hoping he would be.

yeah, it's about being good enough.

there’s basically no fighters in the lhw div that are at the same level of striking as Shogun.

I would prefer to see Rampage vs Machida instead of Rampage vs Shogun. I think it would be interesting to see how Machida deals with someone who’s a good boxer and knows how to defend and counter, pretty much like Shogun did last night.

I wanted Machida to win, but Shogun was unstoppable this time

Thats how u win a title. Shogun Deserves it. Hats off to him.. Rampage Is gonna Takin it from him tho

I hope Rampage takes it also...

But at this point Shogun is prime, so even a huge Rampage fan like myself has to be doubting…

would anyone...

who questioned why Shogun was chosen as number one contender back in august or whatever just admit they were wrong? Im maybe gloating a bit cause i thought he was the only one in the weight class at the time with even a chance to beat Machida but i do recall ALOT of people wondering who the fuck made the matchup when all Rua had done recently was beat a decrepid Chuck. I am glad he seized the opportunity.
long live the king….
WAR SHOGUN!!!!

GSP is the man!

this is what i think

machida is a great fighter. really hard to solve and shit but i go against him in almost every fight. i honestly think shogun has his number. machida should fight jones. that would be sick!!!! an shogun vs silva. i lik shogun more and more every fight hes in. an is it just me or did machida look tired???

by nawwolfe on May 9, 2010 11:22 PM EDT reply actions

It was a great fight for the length of the fight Machida got some good shots in and even had a takedown!

But when playing with fire(Shoguns striking, accuracy & KO power) you are taking a chance of getting caught and until that moment I had MAchida ahead. I think MAchida was a little to aggressive that early in the fight and like Shogun said after that he was more prepared for his leg kicks than his striking.

I think Machida will rise back and we will see the rubber?
