UFC 113: Alan Belcher piledriver on Patrick Cote (Pic)
Following his submission loss to "The Talent," Cote called the move "illegal." Where do you stand on these types of offensive moves in a mixed martial arts bout?

I’m liking Alan a lot. He’s on of my favorite up and coming fighters.

Fuck Cote.
Belcher was clearly slamming him horizontally and was not trying to ram his head into the canvas.

i like cote
and im glad to see him back in the cage after a terrible injury…but him saying the move was illegal was just him trying to justify a loss
Doesn’t matter what he intended to do, he slamed his head into the canvas. I think it was illegal. I felt bad for Cote after the nut shot, and then the pile-driver.
Myth: Three Americans die every year from rabies. Fact: Four Americans die every year die from rabies.
Sorry Dude
You are exactly right when you say he slammed his head into the canvas, which is different than spiking him on his head into the canvas. The one you mentioned, the one he did, totally legal. Let’s not forget, it would have been easier to pick up 1/2 of Cote and dump him on his head, Belcher put in A LOT of extra effort to make sure he went horizontal.
Give a man to fish and feed him for a day. Kick his stupid ass and maybe he will leave you alone.

Cote went face-first, which is totally legal. Spiking him on top of his head, which Belcher didn’t do, is illegal.

Now that I think about it, that was a lot closer to a Triple-H Pedigree than a piledriver.

the only reason he didnt land on the top of his head is because Cote looked down and tried to avoid possible paralysis.
Wow
That was actually worse than I remember. That was totally up and down and vertical. Nice find JB.
Myth: Three Americans die every year from rabies. Fact: Four Americans die every year die from rabies.
It's close
He pushed his head down and then dropped him on it… SO…. I don’t see the problem with it but it was a close call.
No it was legal....
He lands face first… Spiking when a fighter gets slamed on the top of his head….Face first and top of the head are completely different…Go to the 4 minute mark on this video and this is spiking a fighter….http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it8z3N6Cdt0
The Definition of spiking for fighting purposes is a slam that compresses the spine. Face first doesn’t compress the spine anymore then getting slammed on the back of your head Rampage style….
I was a fool for ever doubting Shogun. I should be ashamed for never giving him a chance to get healthy. Shogun made Machida look B-level-Just like my bet made me look b-level!
Slamming forehead first like Cote was can leave you with a serious case of Pezz-Dispenseritis. Just as dangerous of a condition.

In the moment it's hard to tell what intentions were
All Cote knows is he was upside down, in mid air and slammed down on what cools have been his head if he hadn’t adjusted. I don’t think a spike was the intention and I don’t think it was illegal

I think as long as you dont have him inverted and slam him on his neck its ok.
Like the Kurt pellgrino slam in his last fight was brutal, and could have caused serious injury. The only reason it wasnt illegal was because Fabricio Camoes had his back and was in an advantageous position and could have let go at anytime. I think eventually someone is gonna become paralyzed from one of these piledriver slams. But it is hard to control how your opponent lands. But i didnt see anything wrong with the cote slam.
The ruling was that because Camoes could have used his hands to block the slam it wasn't an illegal move
The same would apply here.
by Swedish Chef smerdy herdy verdy on May 9, 2010 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions
I thought it was because he had control over his own body and was applying a sub. He could have just let go of the sub. Neither are true in this case.
Myth: Three Americans die every year from rabies. Fact: Four Americans die every year die from rabies.
That’s what I meant about Camoes. He could have let go of the submission to block the slam but chose not to. I saw the fight and I thought Cote was parallel enough to the floor he could have used his feet or hands to stop the slam but it seemed like he just didn’t. I could be wrong though.

kadongkadonk slam. lmfao.. Finally someone did the piledriver..
Belcher is a tool.
Him calling out Anderson Silva is a joke. Did you see his interview on UFC.com where he talks about hurrying up and winning the belt from Anderson then going up to 205 and cleaning out that division? Who does this loser think he is? lol That’s what Anderson is gonna do, finish Chael and Vitor then move up to 205 and should get a str8 shot at the champ then. Shogun vs the winner of Rampage/Rashad most likely.
Fedor played Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun and won... but still avoids the UFC!
So
He’s a tool cause he has aspirations and confidence? And this “loser” sure does win a lot

He's on a good run
But he talks as if he’s a p4p great now. Rather than aspiring to be the best he thinks that he is the best and it’s really off-putting. I’d have more respect for him if he showed more humility.

I can see if he had actually said all that, I might agree
But I believe what he said was essentially more along the lines of : “I come in, I do my job, I work hard and I beleive I’m up for a shot at the title.” I didn’t hear any talk of him being the absolute best or saying he would destroy Anderson. He’s a hell of a lot more than Sonnen and a hell of a lot more outspoken than Belfort.
A.B.M.!! - Somos Pocos Pero Locos!
There is no controversy it was legal
The head of NJSA cleared this up the last time it happened…
"The definition of a pile driver is any throw where you control your opponent’s body (while) placing his feet straight up in the air with his head straight down and then forcibly drive your opponent’s head into the canvas or flooring material."
thx for quote
clearly Cote was almost parallel to the ground, so its the opposite of what this rule describes and there is no controversy
Lesnar > [Carwin] ---> Lesnar > [Velasquez] ---> Lesnar > [JDS]
Overeem will NOT show up on May 15th! Mark my words. Sig stays til then.
Look in the picture, his head and more importantly back are not parallel to the ground. I’m not trying to be a dick, but the move he did was dangerous.
Myth: Three Americans die every year from rabies. Fact: Four Americans die every year die from rabies.
And...

I call them within the rules.
Myth: Three Americans die every year from rabies. Fact: Four Americans die every year die from rabies.
actually
if someone would post a pic closer to the time of impact you will clearly see that his body, spine, legs, everything, is almost parallel to the canvas. Watch the move over if you can find it on youtube still. I have the whole event DVR’d. After watching it over, there is no argument what-so-ever that it was even close to being illegal. In fact, it was about 75-80 degrees off.
by Opposites Attack on May 9, 2010 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions
There are some animated gifs around now and it’s clear that at the time of impact his spine was a 70 degree angle to the mat. If that doesn’t qualify as “spiking the head” under unified rules, then how much more perfect would it need to be? Besides that, the rules in Quebec do not use the “spiking the head” language. The rule states that any take down in which you cause the opponent to land head first is illegal.
that is just wrong.
I have the fight DVRd and have watchedc it over again. Many times to judge the tough angle at which his spine is at.
This is a belly flop, he landed on his face, not the top of the head channeling the force vertically down his spinal cord, which would be a pile driver….this was a belly flop. Clear as day when you watch the video, which you obviously have not.
by Opposites Attack on May 10, 2010 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions
The problem here is that you continue to talk about a pile driver, when the rules in Quebec say nothing of the sort. The rules in Quebec state that you may not cause an opponent to land head first as part of a take down. There is no mention of top of the head vs. front of the head vs. side of the head. The spiking/pile driver rule is part of the unified rules in the United States. Quebec has it’s own rules. Read the actual rule. I posted the link somewhere in this thread.
Clearly you haven’t looked at the video. He is no where near horizontal when he hits. Take a look at the gifs posted, you might be surprised. Either way, as prokstar pointed out, that’s not the rules in Quebec.
Myth: Three Americans die every year from rabies. Fact: Four Americans die every year die from rabies.
you do realize having feet straight in air with head straight down only happens in the wwe or tits an ass what ever its called, i think you and the njsa need to have a conference call with the undertaker so he can explain that its an act, people dont naturaly stick their legs in the air when inverted
^Totally right^
Myth: Three Americans die every year from rabies. Fact: Four Americans die every year die from rabies.
Look at the gif above. Cote was totally perpendicular to the mat at the time of impact. Definetly shady, if not illegal.
Myth: Three Americans die every year from rabies. Fact: Four Americans die every year die from rabies.
you obviously didnt look at my comment above.
This pic DOES NOT SHOW THE IMPACT. find a picture closer to the point of impact, or watch the fight over like I did. I was lucky enough to DVR the event, so I have the luxury of watching this move over again.
Yes, in the picture above, his spine is perpendicular to the mat, but by the time Belcher had brought him down, his body, neck, legs, and spine, were all almost parallel to the mat….only about ten degrees off. what resulted was an impact to Cote’s face, not the top of the head channeling the force directly down his neck and spinal cord as a real pile drive would do, but more along the lines of a belly flop.
You are looking at the wrong picture. Find a better one and you will see that it is not even debateable that it was illegal, hence, why it was NEVER RULED ILLEGAL in the first place. Just look for yourself. enough said.
by Opposites Attack on May 10, 2010 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions
I watched again too, and paused it at the point of impact. His spine is at a 65-70 degree angle to the mat.
find the GIF and post it then.
That is blatantly incorrect.
by Opposites Attack on May 10, 2010 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions
actually, I found the GIF you are talking about
And it does appear to show exactly what you are referring to. There is another angle that is more from teh side, and less of an oblique view, that shows him being somewhere between what both you and I are saying, but I can definitely understand why you feel the way you do because it does absolutely look much steeper there than it actually was.

Until someone gets paralyzed or dies...
I believe there is no place for this kind of move in MMA. It can cause serious damage.. and death to someone. If the rule book said it’s legal, then it’s legal..but it doesn’t make it right. It is such a dangerous move to do.. it can break someone’s neck.. paralyze or kill them.. I believe the rules should state pile driving someone on their head is illegal.. one day, hopefully before someone gets seriously hurt, bad. They will make it an illegal move.
We need you back posting more. Too many damn idiots,12-year-olds and trolls nowadays.

I’m always checking out all the threads.. recently I have been trying to get in and drop a line or two.. more frequently. I just pay attention to the ones that I logically agree or vibe with or debate against in a civil way.. Keeping doing your thing P-Dub.. real recognizes real.
Really?
So, why don’t they just ban all takedowns. Hell, Kimbo could’ve broke Mitrione’s back with one of those slams…………… I hope you’re entire post was nothing more than a big joke. If you were being serious, then you failed miserably
Bruce: No it’s not a joke. I state my opinion, if you agree or disagree your right.. that’s your opinion too. The execution of a pile drive is going to kill someone in a MMA fight one day or paralyze someone which is no a joking matter. There are plethora of techniques fighters can use to win a fight, that one should not be one of them.
Ok
Judges don’t have monitors to view the fight… HOW IN THE HELL can they call it if you can barely see it after 3 viewings?
They can’t do an instant replay.
It’s on the REF to catch it, stop it, and deduct a point.

And kudos to The Talent. He had the guts to call out the Spider. Usually, you end up dead when you do that.

Of course it was illegal...
Cote managed to protect himself somewhat and it was not a picture-perfect fake wrestling move, but Belcher was pretty obviously trying to drop him on his head.
This was no different, in principle, than what Nate Marquardt lost a point for in the Leites fight.
the piledriver is an illegal move no doubt
but imo belcher purposely flattened him out so he wouldnt drop on the top of his head.big props to alan hence 100% legality in the slam.
I don't think he did at all.
I’m not trying to be an ass, I just think Belcher intended to do it, and Cote was able to half protect himself. The move is dangerous, and if that wasn’t illegal it should be.
Myth: Three Americans die every year from rabies. Fact: Four Americans die every year die from rabies.
Looked legal to me...
…Cote landed horizontally on his face, it wasn’t a head spike where he would have landed on the base of his head. No significant pressure on his neck or spine as would be the case if Belcher were performing a piledriver. Sorry Patrick, what Belcher did wasn’t illegal. He just fought unorthodox and caught you.
I was OK with the pile driver....
….but the elbow off the top of the cage was beyond the pale.

About as illegal as turning right on red in the state of North Carolina.
They should have a “Bitch of the night award”. Toss up between Cote and Daley.
Too many damn rules!
Pile driver? Who cares. Kicking or kneeing a downed opponent to the head and puches to the back of the head stop and change way to many fights. It’s a fight for God’s sake. Do away with some of these tedious rules.

I usually agree with you BJPF, but I think in any sport you try to reduce needless risks wherever you can. I think this is one of those cases. I know I don’t want to see someone die or become paralyzed because of something like this.

Open up the Shit Gates and where the Hell was Marv?
Look at the picture above. Cote’s head and back are perpendicular to the ground. He has no control over his body (unlike when a sub is locked in and someone is slamed). If it’s not illegal it should be. If Belcher had slipped or not had enough power to follow through on that, that could have ended Cote’s career or life. The rule of the feet over the head is unrealistic as most people wouldn’t allow their legs to do that ala WWE. It should be the head and back being perpendicular to the ground. It was a good win for Belcher, but that is a little risky to allow I think.
Myth: Three Americans die every year from rabies. Fact: Four Americans die every year die from rabies.
well i just watched it and i didnt see the big deal. and i think we have enough rules already

It was good. I give Belcher more credit than I used to (still don’t like the guy). Cote’s wrestling looked good, and his JJ has improved so that’s a positive. He was tagging Belcher with some good shots in the second. He lost the first, but I am going to use the double knee surgery excuse (the Rua if you will) and say that Cote will be back ;)

That clearly was not a pile driver!
Little disappointed with Cote, we have seen many other guys get dropped on their heads way worse than that. He was horizontal, pile drivers are verticle.
What’s the definition of one then? His head and back looked vertical to me, but he seemed to protect himself a bit and try to flatten out. I’m just curious of the definition in the rules, cause I thought is was any vertical motion leading to contact with the mat with the head or neck when the person being spiked is not in control of their body (ie not attempting a sub). By that definition this could be a piledriver.
Myth: Three Americans die every year from rabies. Fact: Four Americans die every year die from rabies.

watch it in slow mo Cote would have landed on the top of his head but he managed to save himself
and that could have been even worse than a piledriver because not only did he slam him he also came down on top of him
Agreed JB. It is worse than I remember. He is perpendicular to the ground at the time of impact, and that would seem like an illegal move. He’s lucky his head didn’t snap back or he would be looking like a pezz dispenser right now. Dangerous move for sure.

whatever even in the pic its totally illegal
its almost completely straight up and down. cotes not gonna straighten his legs top make it look like a wwe pile driver. lol he’s trying to offset with his body weight. his spine is pretty well as vertical as it gets.

piledriver slash headslam
anytime a fighter gets slammed on their head I cringe and know something traumatic is right around the corner but most of the time the guy just gets dazed and nothing majorly concerning happens. This time though I am glad it is being noticed because Patrick Cote was robbed from a fair mma contest. I dont have anything against Alan Belcher and dont want to see him be penalized if anything he should be thanked for inventing this move so we can have a better vision and takeon these moves straight from the wwe.
But thats scripted and still goes wrong this was not scripted even Belcher didnt plan the move nor want to possibly parralize cote. This move is dangerous as any head slam is the result will be a fighter getting a serious neck injury and maybe a serious head injury. That can paralyze anyone however I must add that athletes are in better shape than most and their flexibility is marveling sometimes so it doesnt always happen but that doesnt make it alright like breaking the law if you dont get caught it seems okay but really it is not !

.Sorry Dude You are exactly right when you say he slammed his head into the canvas, which is different than spiking him on his head into the canvas. The one you mentioned, the one he did, totally legal. Let’s not forget, it would have been easier to pick up 1/2 of Cote and dump him on his head, Belcher put in A LOT of extra effort to make sure he went horizontal.

But i didnt see anything wrong with the cote slam.
by Ponch-Hoe on May 9, 2010 12:04 AM PDT reply actions
.The ruling was that because Camoes could have used his hands to block the slam it wasn’t an illegal move The same would apply here.

actually if someone would post a pic closer to the time of impact you will clearly see that his body, spine, legs, everything, is almost parallel to the canvas. Watch the move over if you can find it on youtube still. I have the whole event DVR’d. After watching it over, there is no argument what-so-ever that it was even close to being illegal. In fact, it was about 75-80 degrees off.
by Opposites Attack on May 9, 2010 2:35 PM PDT up reply actions
.There are some animated gifs around now and it’s clear that at the time of impact his spine was a 70 degree angle to the mat. If that doesn’t qualify as "spiking the head" under unified rules, then how much more perfect would it need to be? Besides that, the rules in Quebec do not use the "spiking the head" language. The rule states that any take down in which you cause the opponent to land head first is illegal.

Until someone gets paralyzed or dies… I believe there is no place for this kind of move in MMA. They will make it an illegal move.

That clearly was not a pile driver! Little disappointed with Cote, we have seen many other guys get dropped on their heads way worse than that. He was horizontal, pile drivers are verticle.
by HEELHOOK on May 9, 2010 11:25 AM PDT reply actions
. By that definition this could be a piledriver.

watch it in slow mo Cote would have landed on the top of his head but he managed to save himself
by Jimbobb on May 9, 2010 4:49 PM PDT up reply actions
.and that could have been even worse than a piledriver because not only did he slam him he also came down on top of him
by Jimbobb on May 9, 2010 4:50 PM PDT up reply actions
. Agreed JB. It is worse than I remember. He is perpendicular to the ground at the time of impact, and that would seem like an illegal move. He’s lucky his head didn’t snap back or he would be looking like a pezz dispenser right now. Dangerous move for sure.

. His feet do look like they come off the mat. Oh well, it’s done now, hopefully they clarify the rules before someone gets seriously hurt or killed.

.The only way this could have been more of a pile driver is if they were working together to make it look better (a la WWE). He was pretty vertical at the time of impact.

.Sickest thing I’ve seen in years. Is Patrick Cote whining calling this an illegal move? err hmmm bitch. lol

.It was an illegal move:
"195.29. The following techniques used to initiate a take down of an opponent on the mat constitute fouls:
(1) making an opponent fall head first onto the mat;"

whatever even in the pic its totally illegal its almost completely straight up and down. cotes not gonna straighten his legs top make it look like a wwe pile driver. lol he’s trying to offset with his body weight. his spine is pretty well as vertical as it gets.
