Dana White: 'Paul Daley will never fight in the UFC again'

Daley-done_medium

Props: Sherdog.com

Quoteworthy:

"He's done. I don't give a s--t if he's the best 170-pounder in the world. He'll never come back here again. I'm probably the most lenient guy in sports. And this is probably one of the most lenient organizations. We're all human, we all mistakes, things happen. There's no excuse for that. These guys are professional athletes. You don't ever hit a guy blatantly after the bell like that whether you're frustrated or not. It was probably one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. I don't care if he fights in every show all over the world and becomes the best and everybody thinks he's the pound-for-pound best in the world. He will never fight in the UFC ever again."

UFC President Dana White ends what could have been a promising Octagon career for Paul Daley, after the trash talking Brit took a swipe at UFC 113 opponent Josh Koscheck after the bell at last night's "Machida vs. Shogun II" event at the Bell Centre in Montreal. "Kos" utilized his wrestling to outpoint "Semtex" en route to a unanimous decision victory and a spot opposite Georges St. Pierre on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF 12) this September. Anyone think the punishment doesn't fit the crime? Or did Daley get what he deserved?

Ya I think that timing influenced the decision

It sends a statement that UFC is more professional than SF, since they didn’t punish anyone and are letting the commission take care of it.

But that doesn’t take away from Daley’s stupidity.

Yep

As bad as it sounds, Daley will be an example. Kinda like “you do this and you’re fired” to prove that Strikeforce isn’t as professional as the UFC. That’ll be the basic idea behind firing Daley at least.

Miragliotta should me made an example of for how to not handle a situation after a fight. A better ref there would have stopped Daley.

really? I saw it coming from a mile away!!

You could tell he was pissed off being dry humped for three rounds. If you know Paul Daley at all, I mean he’s a cocky motherf*cker who has a shit load of pride and he just got dominated in a very boring way and I knew right when he got up that he was throwing a punch.

Absolutely, it looked like he was going to go and congratulate or at least shake hands or something not saunter over and try to slug him. Dan handled it perfectly considering the situation.

it's an example that really needs to be set too!

Dana did a good job making an example out of Babalu after that bullshit he pulled. And I hope he sticks to his guns on this one too. This sport got where it is because the sportsmanlike attitude of the fighters overshadowed the brutality of the sport itself. But with more irreverent disrespectful jackasses like Lesnar popping up every day, Dana needs to draw a clear line on unacceptable conduct and back it up with consequences no fighter will want to risk. This is a smart move. In the long run, the tone this will set in the company will benefit the sport far more than any of Daley’s potential future fights would have.

by (shonuff) on May 9, 2010 2:58 AM EDT up reply actions

He will kinda undo this smart move by signing Jake Shields don’t you think?

by carlosb on May 9, 2010 3:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Not really

Cause that did not happnen in the ufc. Also it won’t happnen in the ufc cause they won’t have that many fighters in the cage at ones. I think what happend last night is the worst that it will get in a ufc production. There really is a more sence of control at the ufc events it just a real shame what happnend. What a waste of good talent. Also I would like to say good job by goldie and rogan that’s how u put a good spin on a bad situation unlike those dicks at sf that says this stuff happnens.

Wondering

Is what we were all collectively doing last night after this happened. Wondering what the penalty would be, fine, suspension, etc. After seeing this news today, I have no problem with it. Especially in the light of the brawl from Strikeforce just the other week. This petty stuff has no place in a professional sport. Like what others have said MMA already has to fight off the reputation of being violent/barbaric. A hard line needed to be drawn.

If Daley serves as the example that ensures this type of thing never happens in the octagon again so be it. I personally hope the message is loud and clear to everyone especially the hotheads of the sport. If you assault someone after the bell, you get your walking papers.

No surprise that they're both gone

Kimbo sucks and had no business fighting on a PPV in the first place while Daley let the whole sport down and I can’t call myself a fan of his after that farce. Him and Kos are both disgraces and are bad for the sport. It’s a shame that Shoguns huge victory has been overshadowed by this BS.

BEFORE the punch was thrown.

LOOK at what Koscheck did just before the punch was thrown.
He had his back to Paul Daley and before turning and facing him he turned halfway with his first up and his left first touched Daley on the chin.

I think thats what set Daley Off.

Yeah they both acted like shitty fighters in this match but…

by FighterFan_25 on May 9, 2010 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

You've gotta be kidding me

Daley was already beginning to throw the punch by the time Koscheck’s fist came near his chin. Like Puckhead said, Kos was doing nothing but instinctively defending himself when he saw Daley coming at him like that. The only things that set Daley off were the fact that he’s a douchetool and the fact that he lost.

not overboard

At first I too thought it was overboard. But I changed my mind after thinking about it for a while. A lot of the public, including many sports commentators, think that MMA is barbaric and should be banned. Daley’s action plays into that idea. So I think that Dana is doing the right thing. Dana needs to show that there is no tolerance for that kind of behavor in MMA, because MMA fighters are great athletes and great sportsmen.

by seh on May 9, 2010 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

What if....is the ? his actions have to account for..

What if he caught Koscheck, fractured his orbital bone or detatched his retina? Koscheck would never be ale to fight with a detatched retina. Granted it didn’t happen but it could have. If he gets away with a simple suspension, does it again because he figures he can take a year off, and hurts somebody the next time…Would it have been to little? It was a criminal assualt whether he got hurt or not, just like attempted robbery or attmepted murder is still an attempt, what he did was criminal, childish, and embarassing for his trainers, his team, and Team Rough House. His team should hold him accountable to. In every sport I ever played my team would have had their own punishment for someone that did something like that.

I was a fool for ever doubting Shogun. I should be ashamed for never giving him a chance to get healthy. Shogun made Machida look B-level-Just like my bet made me look b-level!

He was cut after the Knee. It may not have landed flush but it def. made enough contact to cut. I am not saying he should have been as hurt as he played it up, considering that the hairline is the hardest part of your body, but it did glance and cut. Only Kos knows whether it hurt or not and he has to live his decision on playing it up. It doesn’t make acting like a soccer player in a cage any better but, that is for Kos to deal with. You think all of his boys are clowing him on that move? LOL! It sure as hell looked like Daley threw that knee with the intent of it being illegal and losing a point. I

I’ve been slowly warming up to KOS over the past few years, and i can now say that i am a KOS fan….i thought his post fight interview with Rogan was fantastic. In that environment, with the crowd reacting the way they were, there was absolutely nothing KOS could say to turn that around, so why not incite them more?? Pretty funny shit…..

I hear what you're saying, but...........

even though KOS has done this twice in a row….and as annoying as it might be, the only way he can really lose my respect would be if he used those phantom illegal knees to actually quit the fight, a la Jaime Varner. A true KOS fan could argue that he’s just taking full advantage of a situation that has presented itself to him, and the only way he could really cross the line would be to say he couldn’t continue, and win by disqualification. That’s what Varner did against Cerrone, and it pretty much wrecked the dude’s reputation. I’m just going to chalk it up to KOS being KOS, which includes his arsenal of mindfucks toward opponents, referees and judges.

The first time round...

GSP didn’t do much other then control Koscheck…Koscheck really has the best chance of makng a fight competetive with GSP. He is the next best wrestler in mma to GSP. He actually was able to control GSP, for half of a round in their first meeting. I am not saying he will win, but he has the best tools to make it competetive….

totally agree

That’s exactly what we were discussing after last night’s fight. KOS presents a much bigger challenge to GSP than Daley. I’m really looking forward to that fight. Having said that, i still don’t think KOS has much of a chance against GSP……as dominant of a wrestler as KOS is, GSP is just flat out better. My takedown ratio prediction is 5:1…meaning GSP will take KOS down 5 times for every 1 time KOS takes GSP down. It’s gonna be a 5 round wrestling match….perhaps a little bit of striking mixed in, but for the most part this will be completely on the ground. I’m sure there will be plenty of boo’s, but not from me….i tend to gravitate to all the wrestlers anyhow, a good ground fight never bores me….unless it’s Guida of course….

It will be interesting to see...

If we are lucky enough, Koscheck can land a big hit and dethrone GSP. I am not that much of a Koscheck fan, but that division needs a shake up. It is getting a little stale. GSP has celaned it out and there really is not much to offer in the sense of up and commers. I will enjoy it as well while the world boo’s….

Yvel has no business in the UFC either.

I’ve called him “Gilber Eyeball” and hated him ever since he tried to perform cataract surgery on Don Frye with his thumbnails. Yvel is a cheating dirtbag and has no business ever being allowed to fight anywhere again. They only licensed him for one fight, so they’re keeping him on a tight leash, but IMO, he should have been banned 2 or 3 DQ’s ago.

Fine and suspend him. If you really want to mess up his career then sit on his contract till it expires. Think about it. You fire Daley right now and someone will pick him up because of the notoriety of tonight’s bout. You sit on his contract for… a year? No one will remember him then. Think it through, Dana!

Right now, even if StrikeForce wanted him, I don’t think CBS would let them hire him, not after what happened on their last show. He’s either off to Japan or fighting in local shows. Either way, he’s not fighting anyone that matters and we won’t have to hear about him for a long time.

hated Kos and loved Daley before this fight...

now i think theyre both bitches…ive seen 4 year old kids throw the same type of tantrum as daley if they strike out in little league…he was embarassed that he just got worked for 15 minutes so he decided to use minute 16 to take out his frustrations…that being said, i think that he shoulda been fined and suspended, it was just unfortunate timing for him after what just happened with the gracie camp in strikeforce

the blood was on the complete opposite side of his face than where the knee glanced

by Jimbobb on May 9, 2010 2:48 AM EDT up reply actions

um...the opposite side of his face? You mean the inside? the backside?

the blood was right on the top of his forhead, right where the knee hit him. I know it didn’t look like it hit, but he was bleeding there immediately after, and had a big black and purple egg right there back in the locker room. So unless you’re implying that Kos razor-bladed himself NWA style and then went back to the locker room and had somebody frying-pan his noggin to legitimize his claim….it had to be the knee

no, they're sensitive because Kos played it up like a drama queen

just like he did with the Rumble Johnson incident. Both were legit fouls, but both looked questionable and the way Kos milked made him look like a wus and made it hard for people to give him the benefit of the doubt. .

Right on. That’s two fights in a row that he’s really made a meal of some pretty questionable fouls. The knee was def. illegal but wasn’t anywhere close to catching him flush.

which is worse? Daley was doing ok and gets stopped for 3 minutes because of Koscheck cheating again. What Sonnen did to Marquardt is control and damage using wrestling and GnP but id say about 60 or 70 per cent or wrestling/control in MMA shouldnt be scored as its nothing more then hold them down with about 5 weak ass rabbit punches to the back or stomach per round and they can do this for 5 rounds and back to back fights its hillarious. I agree with Baz Rutten that takedowns shouldnt score at all unless you do something. Its basiclly like throwing more punches that miss but you win the fight because you threw more even though they didnt land

by Tonyuk on May 9, 2010 3:36 AM EDT reply actions

Not the same at all. If you get taken down and are held down you were controlled. Even if you get back up that’s a reaction to an action. Take downs should be scored as they are actions. I do think they should score activity of the bottom person better though.

Harsh for Daley but he only has himself to blame was a cheap bitch shot. He does seem to take awhile to wind his emotion down after fights.

Frustration or not though no excuse for after the bell activity like that. He was controlled for 3 rounds just like we all new he would be if kos took it to the ground.

As for the knee Daley did hit Kos with some up strikes while he was on the ground could have been one of those that cut him cause the knee really didn’t appear to hit anything but his hair on the left side.

sentive thugs, they all need hugs

You can tell mma has an image problem becuase a punch after the bell shouldn’t be that big of a deal. And if look at he was trying to shake his hand but kos turned his back to him. But timing is everything, daley has no ground game and won’t be a good challege to gsp anyway so they can cut him to prove a point. But as it been said before, diaz and eventually shields will be in the octogon with out any punishment. So that “bad for mma” is a joke coming from dana, he is trying to prove a point to any one dumb enough to listen.

good for Dana

What if that idiot hurt a fighter and ended his fighting career for something stupid like that???

Dana has been barking about some of the fighter’s antics……finally time to take action. Granted, I think his threat about cutting Anderson is more of a pipe dream, but this is justice. Let this idiot go fight with the strikeforce clowns and help them flush themselves down the toilet with the other mma rejects.

UFC has an image to uphold. They have worked hard to prove this is a sport, not sports entertainment. Martial arts is about respect. If a fighter can’t hold respect for another fighter, there is no place for them. BJ Penn is a prime example. Win or loose…….he holds respect in the octogon after the fight.

by tallimeca on May 9, 2010 9:29 AM EDT reply actions

the 64,000 dollar question is though

would daley have been cut if the strikeforce mayhem hadnt have happened? im not condoning it in anyway but it looks like one upmanship on danas part.a suspension and a massive fine wouldve sufficed imo.

by scott1 on May 9, 2010 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes he would have been cut

even without the SF debacle. Babalu was cut after a winning sub when he held it after the tap out. This was even worse IMO. What if Daley had connected and KOd Kos? or injured him with that sucker punch? I watched it several times and he had bad intentions on the shot, it was not meant to be a bitch slap.

by Tuff.Gong on May 9, 2010 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

i agree he shouldve been cut

but u never know whats going on in danas mind.i bet strikeforcegate come into his head before the attempt to deal with the situation at hand.u can imagine him thinking to himself “ill show them how to deal with this situation”

by scott1 on May 9, 2010 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Probabaly

I think the fact that it happened in Canada made it worse. The UFC have had a lot if problems getting the sport regulated over there, Vancouver have been awkward, Ontario have been stalling on the legislation for years and they almost had to move 97 because of the riot at that regional show when James Thompson landed a takedown at a striking only event. So, the fact that a high profile fighter suckerpunched the top contender after losing in Canada gives these anti-MMA groups to block sanctioning legislation, it may take years to undo the damage that Daley did. The whole thing is a PR nightmare not to mention criminal. It’s no surprise that Daley is getting sacked and he deserves everything that he gets as far as I’m concerned.

I think he would have still cut him.

MMA is obviously our favorite sport. But MANY mainstream people have yet to accept it, people who dont care for “violent” sports. Shit like the strikeforce fiasco and Daleys actions wont help our sport become the most popular. Dana, being the true pioneer, made the right decision. Now what would have sucked is if it were some B or C list fighter. Who would have cared? He really showed no bias by cutting Daley.

by butsecks on May 9, 2010 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm surprised so many are so rough on dana

White is trying to get this mainstream, yes its unfortunate as daley is a great fighter and we certainly would have see many good match ups, but what he did was inexcusable period. So if he let this one slide, what kind of message does this send? It would re-enforce the mma hater “human cockfighting” point of view, I think dana did the right thing, maybe he could have been more professional about it though.

At least Kos has some well rounded ability and will be able to offer these guys something. Having Paul as a coach wouldve been like getting punished for something you didnt do. “Ok guys lets work on our trash talking for an hour then we will hit the mits” “repeat after me”, “land that one punch” “land that one punch” “land that one punch” “good session guys, now go back to TUF house, get drunk and destroy it”. But Koscheck IS a douche bag. Dana used Daley as an example to stick it to Coker & SF. Daley should be fined, suspended, and kept in UFC. He made a very bad mistake in the heat of action. He should be given a second chance. Dana could have waited a day or two before making a decision.

That being said, Kos also showed he’s a fucking pussy. Just as Daley said, it really showed that he was scared of him. Looking at Miragliotta during the staredown, fighting and acting scared in general. Got it to the ground but simply held position, not doing anything to finish the fight.. very lame. And that whole acting like he was hurt by the knee, come on! Daley was a dick for throwing the illegal knee, but Kos was a bitch. I’m confident he would’ve given up there if he hadn’t seen on the big screen that it was so obvious it didn’t hit him. I am NOT looking forward to him fighting GSP.

I gess it’s easier to make moves like this when the talent probably isn’t going to contend for a title.

Kos should have taken the opportunity to shit talk Daley more, but he decided to take on the whole crowd instead and look like an idiot. He’d actually come a long way in my books but that’s a big step back.

haha

Big tough dana white is eating is f’ing words now!!! UFC is so highly controlled of what happens in the ring after the fighter, blah blah blah blah. Its kinda funny how stuff comes back to bite you in the end. Maybe he should think before he starts down talking other MMA organizations about what happens in the ring after a fight!! Greats fights though and I hope that piece of work paul daley does never fight in the UFC again. What a joke he is!!

This wasn't close to a five on one beating that SF had this was simply one man's stupidity

When any fans see this they won’t be blaming the UFC only the individual.

Watch Koschecks hands.

You can't be serious

Kos turns and when he sees the shot coming (which Daley is already throwing) he sticks out his left hand to get some distance on Daley. The hand didn’t touch Daley before that at all…Daley was already corking up.

Yeah being a sore loser is one thing but a poor sport and douche bag is another

He couldn’t back his big fat mouth and the little girly man showed in Daley.

Why was Kos pissed at the Montreal fans?

I only got to watch the fight on the internet, I may have missed something- after getting sucker punched by Daley, why did Kos tell the Montreal fans off? They weren’t cheering for Daley, were they? It seemed like they were cheering for Kos when his hand was raised…..so I’m not sure why Kos was pissed at the Canadian fans. Did I miss something?

Anyone think the 30-27 in the stephens/stout fight was retardeD?

Seriously… more horrible officiating, wtf did stephens do in round 3 to take it, I actually had stout winning that 29-28, I don’t mind Stephens winning a split as round 2 could have gone either way, but giving him round 3? Give me a fucking break.

by Kanadian on May 10, 2010 1:27 AM EDT reply actions

I don't know that was a close fight any round any fighter had arguement for

Stephens landed the heavier strikes I thought and Stout showecased his iron chin once again. It was close I wouldn’t of argued either way.

i HOPE....

Strikeforce is taking notes! This is how you properly deal with thuggery and unecessary violence after a fight is over!!!

though i wanted to see Daley fight more in the UFC, this si the right move from Dana and the UFC.

Daley

I personally think it is an absolute joke that Daley has been cut from the UFC. If this was another fighter (namely Brock Lesnar) there is no way he would cut him from the organisatiom. A hefty fine or ban would have been sufficient, he knew it was a stupid mistake – but this is sport and there is always controversey.
Now because of a stupid quick fire decision in stead of discussing things and thinking thinks over he just comes out with it in his post fight conference. He now looks a bigger clown than Daley. The fans are the biggest loser in all this, because Daley makes some cracking fights in the 170 division.
