Manager wants Mauricio Shogun vs Randy Couture and more

Shogunelbow10919_lrg11_medium

Quoteworthy:

"The motivation is natural as long as the challenges show up. We got great fights ahead: we can have Lyoto in the future, a revange with Forrest Griffin, a fight with Anderson Silva for the future if this is the UFC wish... We’d like Mauricio had the chance to fight the legend Randy Couture before his retirement."

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua's manager, Eduardo Alonso, outlines several great fights for the former Pride FC standout as he prepares to defend his newly-won 205-pound title. The list of potential adversaries is long and distinguished, inluding several former champions and one UFC Hall of Fame inductee. Indeed, Randy Couture seems to be among the favorites. However, he appears to have a date already booked with James Toney later this year. In the meantime, who do you think who comes next for Shogun, Maniacs? Does Rashad Evans deserve first crack at the Brazilian or are there better fights out there right now?

Here I go: With a victory over Rampage and another good name Lyoto Machida is in contend again for the belt.

Forrest Griffin is out for a while but I’m sure Shogun would be pleased for a non-title rematch.

Anderson Silva is a dream fight. No comments.

Eduardo Alonso also says Randy would be a good name for Shogun because of the money and he’s right.

I'm possibly the biggest Shogun nuthugger alive.

I think he can beat all the fighters listed.

Griffin – Maybe it’s my love for Shogun, but it’s hard not to believe he wasn’t hurt in that fight and it would also be very hard for someone to convince me that he wouldn’t put a hurtin` on Griffin like he was suppose to do the first time. ( That being said, Shogun easily won the first round in their fight, and could of won the second on a couple scorecards if it had gone to a decision.)

Lyoto Machida – Styles make fights, Lyoto can beat Shogun yes, but Shogun wins more often then not, nothing more needs to be said.

Randy Couture – Doesn’t deserve a title shot, he does pose some problems for Shogun that could lead to his victory, but unless Couture beats at least ONE top 5 guy, then I have no desire to see this, plus, I see Shogun’s aggressiveness catching him sooner or later over 5rounds and with Couture’s chin lately, he won’t be able to handle it.

Anderson Silva – Shogun has a 30% chance to win this fight. If he stands with Anderson his looping punches will to big an opportunity for Anderson to capitalize on. Shogun wins this fight on the ground if he does win. He has good enough stand-up to make Anderson feel under pressure and get a take-down be it a trip from the clinch..etc

That being said, I was upset when Rashad beat Rampage, Evans has a much better chance of beating Shogun then Rampage did because of his strategies and not being so one-dimensional( If Griffin’s thai clinch gives you problems, you don’t wanna fight a Chute Boxe fighter, ala Shogun/Rampage, Wand/Rampage I/II). Shogun’s take-down defense is horrible and Evans wouldn’t have to spend to much energy getting him down. That being said he still gassed against Thiago in round 3, and if that happens against Shogun, and if Shogun comes in shape like he has been, then Shogun can take over from there and possibly get a finish or win rounds for a decision. But Rashad has shown a ability to stick to a gameplan and this could be very bad news for Shogun. I’ll take Shogun to win 48-47 as he will not have enough steam after 2 solid rounds of humping to finish him, but will have more then Rashad and be able to tag and hurt Rashad a couple times.

by RayRayJr on Jun 1, 2010 8:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh on Anderson.

There is an X factor like with Lyoto.

Shogun had trained with Machida before and knew what to do to beat him, and we all know Shogun and Anderson use to train together, and with Shogun’s new ability to have a game-plan against his opponent he might know where Anderson is weakest.

I’m still not saying Shogun beats Anderson on the feet, it’s just something interesting to think about.

by RayRayJr on Jun 1, 2010 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions

If he pulls his taunting antics like he did with Maia and the others with Shogun he’ll get KTFO.

That’s why I hope he’s realized not to do that shit, it ain’t entertaining. He should go in there to destroy. That’ll shut up the critics. I’m a fan of Silva, but I would be rooting for Shogun.

Good post, Ray.

I reckon Shogun could possibly even beat Anderson on the feet. He would be the best striker he’s faced by far. I think it’ll be a striker who knocks Anderson off his throne (or at least via strikes).

Laugh away, Worby!

I think Lil Nog should be in this conversation...

The first time they fought was one of the best fights of Pride. Lil Nog, could have gotten that decision and in the eyes of many should have. I would love to see that rematch before I seeany of those other fights except for Anderson/Rua…

I was a fool for ever doubting Shogun. I should be ashamed for never giving him a chance to get healthy. Shogun made Machida look B-level-Just like my bet made me look b-level!

Solid post...and from possibly the biggest Evans nuthugger alive

I think Shogun and Rashad will be a close fight…I’m a big Shogun as well. I think it’ll come down to how well Shogun can defend the takedowns and who has the bigger gas tank that will win this fight.

if anderson beats sonnen

and shogun beats rashad and we dont get silva-rua i’ll be pissed… actually if anderson wins his next fight i think he should fight for the 205lb title regardless of who wins rua or rashad.

About Anderson/Rua . . .

I was gonna say the exact same thing. That is a superfight right there. I’d be rooting for Shogun. That fight is better than Rua/Machida. It’s actually one of the best match-ups that could possibly happen.

by Jackanapes on May 31, 2010 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

this fight would be a blockbuster

i think it would be huge, no tuf coaching needed to hype this one, lol

by panthro on May 31, 2010 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha, yeah

Maybe they could air it in Brazil and do a whole Brazilian TUF with only Brazilian fighters. I could handle the subtitles.

i think Rashad could pose serious issues for Anderson

If they book Shogun vs. Randy they've succumbed badly to abject mainstream marketing bullshit

I like Randy but he’s not a contender. No way. He doesn’t need to be either.

just imagine

randy takes the fight, the wrestles and pounds his way to a split decision.

Yeah, you’re right actually. It’s extremely doubtful Randy could win, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he tied Shogun up for a large portion of the fight. It’s no mismatch by any means.

by Jackanapes on May 31, 2010 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

Lots of guys are using these control techniques to win matches lately. It may be boring to watch but it wins fights.

Still say Shogun is good enough in the clinch and on the ground to get back up or look to sub

I vote...

First, T.Silva defeats Tim Boestch
then, Rampage defeats Machida
then, Shogun defeats Rushard
on the same night, Rogerio defeats T.Silva

then, SHOGUN VS MINOTORO!!!!!

John Hathaway over Diego Sanchez -- I called it. Next prediction -- Martin Kampmann submits Paulo Thiago

Counting down the days till Shogun vs Rogerio 2 (which now seems to have increased dramatically)

I LOVE SHOGUN....

But whos to say he even gets past Rashad? I hope he wins, but lets be honest he has problems with wrestlers, even Machida took him down at will in their rematch,he may have stopped only 1 takedown, and Rashad’s double leg is serious. But we will see.

by Mr.MMA on May 31, 2010 8:03 PM EDT reply actions

True but....

The guy has a good ground game, he just likes to stand and GnP. Shogun has great leg locks and is very dangerous on the ground. Plus his GnP is sick.

In a five round fight, if his cardio is good, I think he could beat Evans.

I hope to see Shogun vs Silva or a rematch with lil Nog.

by Who is Ryoto on Jun 1, 2010 3:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Shogun had trouble against Coleman

With the wrestling. He was taken down and then was able to capitalize when Coleman tired out. I doubt Rashad tires out like Coleman did. Then again, this will be a championship fight and Rashad has almost gotten knocked out in round 3 in his last 2 fights. Shogun might get more tired when fighting a wrestler. There is a lot of factors to consider.

by RyanHobbs on Jun 1, 2010 7:12 AM EDT up reply actions

But Shogun is in much better form than he was against Coleman. I can’t believe it got FOTN! It was a poor performance by Shogun. As long as recurring injuries don’t affect his game, he’s levels above how he performed in that fight.

Rashad is definitely the best contender for the belt. That’s a good match-up. If he beats Rashad, I’ll pray for Shogun/Silva.

by Jackanapes on Jun 1, 2010 7:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Completely agree

Why are we talking about who Shogun will fight after Rashad? Rashad isn’t exactly a great matchup for Shogun. We’ve seen Rashad completely drain and frustrate his last 2 opponents and with Shogun’s possible cardio issues still there in some fashion and his lack of any decent takedown defense…he could be in for a long night. Don’t get me wrong…I think Shogun is a sick fighter but lets not forget that Rashad has only lost once in his whole career to Machida. He’s not exactly a pushover and I think he will provide some interesting problems for Shogun and has a good shot at beating him.

i wana see shogun vs anderson silva. if shogun beats anderson than hes a tru black house slayer. wenever ppl in mma hear the name black house they get scared coz the fighters were on a real tear up. ppl like junior dos santos, anderson silva, lyoto machida, nog brothers, jose aldo. thats a serious team. shogun is the only 1 i can think of that has a chance 2 put an end 2 black houses dominance

by f1 on Jun 1, 2010 7:55 AM EDT reply actions

I dont wanna see that bs..i think fighters need to just stay and their division and clean house. Im all for cross promotions(even though i dont ever see the ufc negotiating with other organizations). But i dont like all this goin up in weight droppin down, pick somewhere thats right for you and stay there

by Mr.MMA on Jun 1, 2010 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

How could you not want Shogun/Silva?

That is a dream fight for me. Possibly even wetdream material . . .

Rashad should have to beat at least Machida for a title shot

But then, I’m not really so keen on seeing Machida/Shogun 3 yet since Shogun beat him down so bad this last fight. I understand how they want to fight a legend in Randy, but he would kill Randy IMO, and that would look dumb.
I would really like to see Shogun/A. Silva after he beats Rashad.

Does Rashad Evans deserve first crack at the Brazilian or are there better fights out there right now?

I think with his victories over Thiago Silva and Rampage, Rashad deserves the next shot.

As for the candidates…

Lyoto needs to win a big fight to get back in contention. There has been the talk of Lyoto fighting Rampage, but I don’t know if that’s enough, or if he needs to fight one of the other names on this list too.

Forrest Griffin needs maybe two solid wins after dropping two in a row before rebounding against Tito. I guess who he fights depends on the timetable for his return from his injury.

Anderson Silva’s a tricky choice to consider, since he still might not want a 205 title fight as there’s always a chance Lyoto could bounce back into contention quickly.

Randy’s had a decent return to LHW, but I need to see him beat a tougher guy than Brandon Vera or Mark Coleman before he gets a title shot. I would definitely like to see him fight one of the names on this list before any serious talk of Couture fighting the champ.

lol wow! and u guys bitch about Soares? hahahahha

“Yeah, umm he should fight Randy…. Then, like, Forrest, and after those two…. Maybe Lyoto again.. Then we’d like to see Vera… Maybe Jardine could work… Matuyshenko would be a good fight for us too….”
