Hathaway has massive potential great fighter, give him the winner of Paulo Thiago v Martin Kampmann i say, they would both be great fights.

im a big Hathaway fan, and that’d be 5-0 in the UFC, but for some reason it doesn’t sit well with me. Maybe its his being 22 years old, but i dont think he’s anywhere ready for a title shot. I think he beats Paulo/Kampmann anyway, but.. i dunno man.

i agree with the
kampman losing to Hathaway but I think Paulo will be too much for him. But idk man that would be a great fight. hathaway is going to get ALOT more recognition after that performance. he looks like he is going to go far in the sport.

For me, Kampmann has always had overrated hands, while Hathaway’s is (or was) underrated. Kampmann’s subs are good but Hathaway seems strong and resilient enough not to suffer from them.
It would probably be a war like Kampmann/Condit with the edge going to Hathaway although being closer to a unanimous decision than a split.

maybe with Hathaway playing the part of Kampmann.. Kamp was taking Condit down a bunch, and i dont think Kamp will be able to get Hathaway down at all. I think Hathaway beats either one with GNP like the Story and Taylor fights. Maybe not so much on the feet like the Diego fight

I meant a war like Kampmann/Condit in terms of being fairly even, not in terms of following the same rhythm. That was my mistake though, I didn’t clarify.
I think you’re right though, although I wouldn’t be surprised if Hathaway got it to the ground by knocking Kampmann down beforehand.

I think it’s still a lil earlier to prime Hathaway for a title shot. He is 5-0 in the Octagon, but, I dont think he is ready for that step yet. I believe, he needs a step up in competition, maybe, the above listed fighters or even a Mike Swick fight. Then assuming he wins, title contention would be worthy.

McFedries couldn’t drop him, Nate the Great coudn’t drop him, and Daley couldn’t drop him. I doubt Hathaway can.

He does have a good chin, but he gets tagged often, so Hathaway could then get the takedown at least.
But you’re right. Either way, I wouldn’t give the striking edge to Kampmann by any means.
I would think it best for Hathaway to take him down and beat him up.
Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinon, but i dont want people thinking Hathaway is a world beater on the feet. Although he did outstrike Diego, it was mostly due to his reach advantage. He fought smart and used straight punches the whole night. Kampmann is a much more refined striker compared to Diego, and he wont be at that big a disadvantage on the feet. Hathaway’s game is more of the 1st round GNP that we saw, which is where he beats Kampmann, Paulo, Condit,…

A guy with a killer guard/ground game is going to give him problems. Which brings me to a fantasy match up of 2 of my favorite guys: Hathaway vs Hazelett. Tell me THAT wont be a great fight. But, even with Haze’s date with Rick Story, I think that fight is a ways away.

but if Haze could get by Josh Burkeman’s strength then I dont think he’ll be that worse off

I agree about Hathaway’s stand-up but Kampmann’s striking is overrated and that’s why I think Hathaway would not be outstruck.
Hazelett, though I was kind of glad Daley knocked him out, is always in good fights even when he loses. I like watching him fight. That’s a good match-up.

kampmann hasn’t really shown me much man but i can see hathaway pulling another upset on either of those guys. I just think Paulo has more tools to get him with. Lets be real Diego hasn’t shown much knockout power so we still havent seen what hathaway can take an Thiago has some hands an he’s great on the ground but can Hathaway upset him ABSOLUTELY. I really like him he seems humble.

all this talk on how Paulo is great on the ground...
based on what? he choked out an already half unconscious Swick, and won a decision against Volkmann based on his striking (which is horrible from a technique perspective), and lost every round to Jon Fitch on the ground.

fitch is a great wrestler that smothers people on the ground not letting them use their bjj sorta like lesnar vs mir II. mir didnt have a chance to use it cuz lesnar was smothering him but im curious as to why u think lil nog vs shogun II can become a reality after last night?? not trying to call u out or anything but i just want to know your point of view on the fight

yeah i had to update that part to say that its gonna take a little while longer
as for that fight, i originally thought the 1st was close, brilz 2 and Nog 3. I ended up giving Nog 1 but it coulda went either way. I just rewatched the 1st round like, 2 minutes ago, and side from a small bit of ground exchanges, which Brilz landed may 3 or 4 hammerfists and didn’t really pass guard too, he didn’t do much. Nog also got a takedown from the back clinch and held it briefly, and landed some good leg kicks and 2 loud knees to the body, as well as a few punches on the feet.
i did think that Nog should have run through him, and im very disappointed in his performance. I think he took Brilz lightly, and lost focus after Forrest pulled out. This puts him a good ways away from any kind of title shot, but his UFC record is still 2-0. He’s only one 1st round KO or Submission away from getting right back to where he was.
SO, im still wanting that fight, for the belt. it all depends on how Rua/Shad goes, and if Nog gets a good win before the LHW Title fight after Rua/Shad. so there is still hope. haha

Diego seems a bit small for WW. He didn’t seem to have any chance of overpowering Hathaway although Hathaway is pretty big in comparison. LW is a good division for Diego, it’s just that he got totally schooled by BJ.
Diego vs. Joe Stevenson at LW is a good, seemingly even match-up. Even George Sotiropopolopulous.
Diego already shut out Joe Daddy 3 rounds to none.
I like Diego against Tyson, Gomi, Sherk, Dos Anjos, Stephens, G-Sop… TONS of great matchups at LW. Not so much at WW

looked horrible….his stand up was even worse. I think that combo he would throw on guida got him thinking that he could use it all the time. BJ made him look bad an he couldn’t connect on Hathaway. Hathaway looked veryy impressive

I remember reading about Diego training with Oscar De la Hoya in Puerto Rico before his fight with Koscheck. Last night Diego’s boxing was terrible. He was flat footed, only throwing 1 punch at a time, no combos and his head movement was nonexistent. Did Diego take Hathaway too lightly? Or is he just over rated?

Hathaway is stylistically a bad match up for Diego, and getting re-acclimated to the weight could also have played a factor. His corner wasn’t exactly pushing him in between rounds either, so maybe he just didn’t prepare well or wasn’t in the right mental or physical conditioning for this fight. Seriously, in between rounds 2 and 3, all his corner said was “circle right and jab… just do that..” NO sense of urgency at all.

I couldnt understand his lack of interest.
Diego looked apathetic in the ring, I know after John hit him he had alot more respect for him. But, Sanchez was outclassed. I understand that this is an always evolving sport, But, Diego went from top 5- 10 WW to nonfactor last night. I hope that doesn’t take away too much from Hathaway, he clearly won that fight. I wonder if a more focused, better prepared and mentally stronger Diego would get beat like that?

He proved that he’s our best young prospect, he put on a very mature and dominant display over a top guy in Diego. Time for John to get some more big fights, I’d like to see him fight Swick, Condit or Paulo/Kampmann next in London. He’s very young and with his size and talent he has the potential to be a class fighter. I’m excited to see how he progresses.

I thought Diego would overwhelm him. Was I wrong. Was really impressed when he beat that Irish lad in front of a partisan Irish crowd too. Of he can work on his striking and subs he’s got a real chance in a few years

free lee murray !! i liked that but homes did pull off the biggest bank robbery ever reportedly ? John Hathaway was not an underdog in my eyes and I am happy this was the fight I was looking forward to most!! and he didnt dissapoint ! If you dont know much bout this kid check out his last fight vs Paul Taylor and watch him ground n pound Taylor to a pulp. At one point his corner was telling him 100 more punches like that and youll win and he kept on punching Paul Taylor to the point where I was feeling sorry for the fellow brit Paul Taylor. Watch that fight and then his first two fights vs Tom Egan and so on. This kid can handle wrestlers which is what UK guys lack but not Hathaway !!! He is long and lean which caused Diego problems from the get go. Its hard to deal with his reach advantage and if he slowly works his way up I believe he has a very bright future and the best chance to win a title down the line for UK fighters. Also I like Andre Winner and Ross daboss Pearson. Hardy and Daley need to learn from this kid and stop dem takedowns cuz american wrestling is light years ahead of UK. But wrestling just controls the fight it doesnt put guys away and this kid is A FIGHTER he will continue to fight even if he gets taken down which is something I was stressing to fans when they said Sanchez is gonna walk thru him and take him down at will. Hathaway is a former rugby player so that tells you that he is truly tough adn athletic. Only 22 yrs old and already making his way up the UFC rankings I hope the UFC keeps him around and doesnt dispose of him like they do to many young up n comers. If I only found a betting site I could made some money from this fight but seeing him get the win and notoriety from all fans of MMA and of course UFC …..im good. Money isnt the answer to everything

I’ve made some decent money off there in the past though unfortunately I left it too late to bet this weekend and all of my maincard picks (other than Duffee) were correct so I could have made a killing especially off a Rashad, Bisping and Hathaway parlay.
