Holy (expletive)! Dana White 'blown away' by Mike Russow's KO comeback over Todd Duffee

Russow-ko_medium

Props: AOL Fanhouse

Quoteworthy:

"I was like 'Holy Shit!' I said the same thing everybody else said. I was blown away. ([Mike Russow] was getting picked apart but what a tough guy though, took some big, big shots. He stayed in there, kept his composure and stayed in this fight getting peppered, hammered and drilled with big shots and then ended up pulling off one of his own. It says a lot about him as a fighter and as a human being."

UFC President Dana White shares his reaction to the stunning, come-from-behind win for Mike Russow at UFC 114 back on May 29. The Chicago cop was on the receiving end of a bona fide ass kicking for two rounds against Todd Duffee in their heavyweight mash-up, until a third round Scott Smith-style miracle knockout punch flattened his muscular foe. Russow slammed his own performance following the contest but should feel a little better about himself after collecting 65 G's for "Knockout of the Night." Best comeback ever? Or biggest collapse ever?

The punch looked like it hit him on the temple

Any good shot to the temple will drop anyone.

Combine that with being gassed and it’s an easy KO

by southpaw447 on May 31, 2010 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

theory

94% of fighters have pretty much equivalent “chins” that are neither glass nor infallible. these 94% can sometimes walk through some big shots, and sometimes go down from one well placed shot. There are 3% on either side of this 94, the super-chins and the no-chins. top 3% is guys like BJ, Nog (until recently), Rampage, Hendo, and apparently Mike Russow. the other end is Goulet, Jardine, etc. everyone else fals into the range of ‘normal’

by Stillberry on Jun 1, 2010 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Well...yeah.

essentially:
“Most guys have normal chins, some guys have better chins, and some guys have bad chins”

This…people know this.

So where does Russow go from here? Is he a prospect even at 35, because he KOed a pretty solid fighter in Duffee, and many are claiming that Russow is a better fighter than Duffee because he won the fight by KO no less? Russow only has one loss in his career, and I have heard that some think that Russow will go far especially with the chin that he has.

by chrisbboy82 on May 30, 2010 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Russow is crap. I don’t get why Duffee was so tentative the whole fight. He could have just grabbed Russow and manhandled him with some knees and done whatever he wanted, Russow had nothing to offer.

I like when guys snap right back into it after the ref stops the fight like “nah I’m good” – how are you good when you just woke up after being punched in the face?

by HitokiriX on May 30, 2010 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Because they’re usually unaware they even went out.

by Jackanapes on May 30, 2010 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I know that...

but when you’re fighting and all of a sudden, the next thing you know, the ref is waiving the other guy off you and asking you if you’re alright… you should know something just happened, lol.

by HitokiriX on May 30, 2010 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I think they’re so confused and so programmed and focused to go forward and keep fighting that they still think they’re still legitimately in the fight.

Its a good thing

He was so humble after his 8 sec Hague knockout. People were all aboard the Duffee hype train, except for Duffee himself. He knew he had alot to work on, and that still looks like the case. He did look good for a while and I’m surprised he didn’t gas out before he got KO’d.

“i knew russow was going to get him”?? Seriously? The only possible way you could have “known” that is when Duffee was on his way down. You may have thought somewhere in your mind"it would be funny if this guy who threw three real punches this whole fight comes back and KO’s this guy." But don’t try to tell anybody that you saw it coming. Please rephrase that comment, for your own credibility.

I even put money down on him. People overlook him cuz hes not known an chunky but theres a reason he has only one loss. im not saying hes the next best thing but props are given where props are due. but to be honest i kinda lost hope in him winning but then boom duffee is down. no need to jump all over me cuz of that dude.

Russow's flab seems to work for him

He looked just as out of shape against McCully but never gassed and won easily, he may not have Todd’s physique but he wasn’t the one sucking wind after the first round. Looks can be deceiving and Mike shut a lot of people up with that one punch.

Did anyone else see Buffer in the background before the Bisping fight? He was warming up like a fighter. He was jumping up and down, shaking his legs and arms out, taking deep breaths and all. Almost in sync with the fighter, and you can see the people sitting around him just looking at him in bewilderment. That dude is off a bit I think.

Really, Really got on my nerves, it’s the first event where Joe has gotten on my nerves so badly with some seriously WHACK commentary. “Greatest comeback in UFC history” PLZ JOE, christ.. apparently you never saw Lutter vs Eastman, or Pete Sell vs Scott Smith?? There wasn’t anything spectacular about a buff 250+ lbs dude gassing and then getting KTFO cause he was tired as all hell. Props to Russow for hanging in there but seriously Duffy was gassed by mid rd 2.

Then his comment on what an impressive performance Rashad gave, and how awesome he did… Get off the shit your smoking Joe. That was at least 2-3 minutes in every rd of Rashad pressing Page up against the cage and doing NOTHING. Not that it was a bad fight, cause I’ve seen worse, and it wasn’t omg, i’m falling asleep boring. But it wasn’t some spectacular, awe inspiring performance either.

agree then disagree

I noticed that too and then he came in and almost had an orgasm telling him again “I don’t know how you can’t be happy for having the best comeback I’ve seen in my 10 yrs of commentating MMA!”, lol fuck off, Lawler catching Manhoef was weirder and crazier. I mean maybe that was Lesnar he did that to, but we didn’t know sh*t about Duff and I even said pre fight for weeks that Duff would win in less then impressive manner. And I was wrong, but nonetheless he got exposed. Le/Smith of course was better as well. Its really easy to say “One of…”, I wish he would’ve here as well.

As for Evans though, I was very impressed. I knew that was exactly what he needed to do and was the only man cheering for him at the house of dudes I was at (apparently the crowd pagers too), and after Shad sending Page for a loop in the opening 20 seconds then utilizing the patented Jackson Gameplan, I couldn’t have been more happy with the way he maintained composure and took the fight exactly where he needed to, stalling Rampage almost entirely.

Well done Shad.

How many TD's did Rashad get? 2? And Page was right back up no?

Page almost put Rashad away in the 3rd, Randy got caught in the 1st. Both fights, the majority of the fight time was spent pressed up against the cage with little inside knees to the thigh. No sir, Evans did NOT do a whole lot more than Couture did against Vera aside from landing a nice right hand in the 1st rd.

Evans got 3 TD’s out of 12 attempts, Couture in his fight had 1 TD. Both fights were spent like I said, with one guy pressed up against the cage while the other kneed him in the thigh. The only diff being now since Rashad beat Rampage (OMG IT WAS AMAZING!!).. give me a damn break.

Chris Rock never said that. he said “they spinnin’ n*****, they spinnin’. they spinnin’ n*****, they spinnin”

your grammar was too good, your structure was wrong, and you didn’t even use the correct expletive

You know how to party Stillberrry!

I was a bit wary of using the N bomb so provided the censored version. It was enough for OJR to get the guy.

I agree— I’ve said all along—he didn’t really do much, but Couture practically did NOTHING. Rashad at least did something.

But I agree that people shouldn’t be going on about this like Rashad is the “superior” fighter. He didn’t conquer Rampage, he didn’t humiliate him or even outclass him. He won on points. He did enough to win a close fight, but didn’t dominate.

A rematch would be good eventually. Rampage would have a good shot to win.

by Jackanapes on May 31, 2010 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Couture landed 59 strikes in the fight believe it or not

my only point was, two different fight; same strategy, one guy gets crucified for it, the other is a genius… how the hell???

Randy was a favourite and barely did anything against Vera other than hold him and get beaten up

Rashad was an underdog who rocked Rampage with the first punch, actually succeeded with meaningful takedowns in a dominant position and beat up Rampage with ground and pound when he did take him down, even after being hurt and almost being stopped. What more did you want him to do?

He failed on 9 TD attempts and spent 3-4 minutes of each rd

Pressing Page up against the fence kneeing him in the thigh.. Get real.. Aside from the first right hand in rd 1 I didn’t see what was so impressive about the performance.

Yeah, I think the basis for your argument is valid. But there are only two pictures in my mind’s eye of that fight:

(1) Couture having Vera pressed against the cage
(2) Couture falling down in pain

I think that sums up the whole fight. Haha. If one were to see those two pictures one could pretty much say he saw the fight. lol.

I gotta say, as lackluster as Rampage/Rashad may have (arguably) been, it wasn’t a snoozer like Couture/Vera.

by Jackanapes on May 31, 2010 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

You could also picture Rashad eating canvas

And damn near being TKO’d in the 3rd rd to even that one up..

Even though I disagree with your comparison to the Couture fight, I can see sense in seeing it that way. It shows that in there is a flaw in the points system as well as the time constraints. Of course, there is no other practicable alternative currently, but it doesn’t mean one can’t realize that it’s a fallible system. But that is common in many sports. And sport is what it is. In a fight like this, it’s better to call it a “sport” than a “fight.”

It was supposedly hacked

His twitter currently says:

Attn: rashad’s twitter was hacked today. We have since updated the password and home that the tweets have not affected ne1 negatively!

by Jackanapes on May 31, 2010 3:10 AM EDT up reply actions

f*ck thats crazy...

Now you gotta wonder if that’s damage control, or if it was actually hacked! Good find man, to both the original msg and the damage control, I’m intrigued to heat from Rashad although I won’t know if he’s lying. I mean to be fair, after all that sh*t talking, not ONCE did they push each other or lay a finger on each other besides the fight, AND right after the fight? Not one bad thing said about either of them from either of them? Kinda fishy. It was defs 90% hyping a fight. Kinda upset me. I’m all for being classy, but after all that BS for what? 5yrs it felt like… Talk some sh*t.. Annoyed me a bit.

Haha. Exactly. Although I’m leaning towards giving him the benefit of the doubt. One would think he wouldn’t be that stupid to make that kind of mistake. I’d like to think so.

by Jackanapes on May 31, 2010 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

seriously? sometimes you have me convinced that you’re like 13. of course that trash talk was all a bunch of BS. it always is. Only dumbass Paul Daley doesn’t know that. What about the fight other than some obviously fake twitter message would lead you to believe it was a “fake” fight? did you really think Rashad would fight any differently?

by Stillberry on Jun 1, 2010 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions

of course that trash talk was all a bunch of BS. it always is.

It very well may be, but it’s not obvious and not proven. As I said before, I think they play it up and embellish their words, but I don’t think it’s always necessarily fake. It’s exaggerated.

I keep saying it—BJ/Sherk wasn’t fake. BJ really got under Sherk’s skin. Sherk knew he was hyping up the fight, BJ apologized about it afterward, but he still said harsh things and he still irked Sherk.

"And where is the Batman? HE'S AT HOME, WASHING HIS TIGHTS!"

by Jackanapes on Jun 1, 2010 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean, why wouldn’t it irritate him? BJ was disparaging Sherk’s name, calling him a steroid abuser. I don’t think Sherk would have given the green light to ruin his reputation.

Sherk is a steroid abuser. he ruined his own reputation, and he gave BJ the green light to call him out by getting busted

by Stillberry on Jun 1, 2010 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

That's missing the point

We weren’t talking about Sherk’s innocence, we were talking about whether animosity is fake or not.

"And where is the Batman? HE'S AT HOME, WASHING HIS TIGHTS!"

by Jackanapes on Jun 1, 2010 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, really, you’re enhancing my point because you’re saying the tension between them was real, which you had earlier said is always a “bunch of BS.”

Lucky shot..thats all..lol nah but he desserves some credit. Its not like hes going to be a force in the heavyweights..he just whent for it (which was something he didnt do during the whole fight and waited for the last few min.)

by LJchamp on May 31, 2010 12:58 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

I dont see it as a collapse more as it was just him getting caught. Happens all the time. Now maybe if the guy was beating him to the punch and lighting him up with combos it would be different.

I AM

Dissapointed that Dufee couldnt finish.. but he is a very good fighter I like his maturity in his striking. This is one of those fights that doesnt say much about Russow… So dont get hyped… He got the shit beat out of him for the whole fight… Russow has no technical striking skills or wrestling period… He did nothing good but land a nice shot and that wont be enough against any other fighter.. Dufee will be a great fighter when its time…. I COMPARE THIS WIN TO THE GSP VS SERRA FIGHT. EXCEPT DUFFE WAS DOMINATING THEN LOST. DONT GET HYPED RUSOW FANS HE SUCKS

Don't buy into the Duffee fight either

He gassed after the first round and relied on the same combinations then got KOd by the only decent punch Russow threw all night. He showed that he’s chinny and has no cardio, not a good combination at all. He clearly was overhyped and I don’t see him doing much at HW.

Russow isn’t anything special but he does have heart, a good chin and is a decent wrestler so he can be a game opponent to test the lower level guys.

Still, as good as Russow did—it was an excellent effort—Duffee ironically has more potential at HW than Russow does, despite the loss.

by Jackanapes on May 31, 2010 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

You have

to remember that Dufee is very young. He looks very athletic and he is very very composed with his boxing. I disagree Dufee can be a very good HW… Id like to see his wrestling though. WE really dont know how his wrestling is maybe its the best part you never know. And just because he couldnt KO Russow doesnt mean he cant KO any other HW. Rampage Can Ko just about anyone but did he KO NO chin Jardine?

Awesome surprising KO

I was really surprised with this KO. Duffee was clearly dominating the fight, but then Russow just up and turned everything around with one punch! Great stuff.

by Fitnessphp on May 31, 2010 11:44 AM EDT reply actions

Dufee needs to train more than just punches to the head

I don’t remember seeing a body punch but I did see ONE leg kick

by HimLong on Jun 1, 2010 11:06 AM EDT reply actions

Maybe that will teach Dufee to finish guys

He put a beating on Russow in the first round and had him hurt a couple of times, then dialed back a ton in rounds 2 & 3. If Dufee would have pounded him in the 2nd round like he did in the 1st, then there probably wouldn’t have even been a 3rd round! People in the arena starting booing Dufee in the 2nd b/c he kept backing off and wouldn’t follow up his combinations. Russow is a fatty that landed a lucky punch, nothing more. But after the way Dufee acted after the 1st round, he deserved to lose.
