Report: Alan Belcher vs Demian Maia possible for Ultimate Fight Night 22

Belcher-maia_medium

File this under "Be careful what you wish for."

Angst-ridden middleweight mauler Alan Belcher has been clamoring for a major step up in competition. Well Mr. Talent, I present you Demian Maia, currently offering his services at UFC Fight Night 22 on September 15.

MMA Fighting brings word that the two are in verbal agreement to hook 'em up later this year.

Belcher (16-6) was last seen using Patrick Cote's head to dig for gold inside the Octagon at UFC 113 earlier this month. It was his second straight win (and second straight finish) after beating the snot out of Wilson Gouveia at UFC 107 in December of last year.

The outspoken but hard-hitting "Talent" wants a middleweight title shot and it would be hard to argue against him if he can dispose of the Brazilian with little effort.

Star-divide

Maia (12-2) has been to the mountaintop but the Sherpa sent him sent tumbling back down it after a five round fiasco at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi. The loss to Anderson Silva was his second in three fights after stringing together ten straight wins.

He is undoubtedly one of the sport's most gifted grapplers, but his striking has yet to evolve to a higher level. To his credit, he showed a marked improvement in a unanimous decision win against Dan Miller at UFC 109, but there will be little margin for error against Johnny Cash's number one fan.

I believe this is referred to as the classic "Striker vs. Grappler."

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on UFC Fight Night 22 as it becomes available.

Great fight!!

Belcher has a good chance of winning this if he can keep it standing. But I see Maia being to crafty in his takedowns and subbing him late round 2.

Belcher is getting his bigger names he asked for at least, let’s see how much he’s improved!

I got maia by sub too.

If he keeps it standing he will almost surely win the fight.

I know Maia’s standup has continually improved but Belcher can pick him apart on the feet and possibly finish him. I’ll take Belcher in this one.

my prediction Maia will shoot for a TD Belcher will stuff deliver another Pile driver then just Finnish him with a few strikes

Cool...

Should be good. Maia FTW!

by BNF on May 28, 2010 10:53 AM EDT reply actions

Belcher got this wherever the fight goes...

He should be fighting Belfort, not Maia.

Alan will take it in stand-up and if it goes to the ground he will avoid Maia’s submissions from guard and GNP him.

I like Alan, but I don't see why everybody is on his nuts.

The dood has lost 4 in the UFC. He got D’Arced by Kendall for God sakes. He got the shit beat out of him from Jason Day’s rubber guard. Come on…

by BNF on May 28, 2010 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Yea I agree

This guy didn’t have any business bitching about a pay raise and marketing imo. Sad thing is after he loses to Maia he’ll still be bitching about how he deserves more attention.

I like Belcher too

I think ppl are starting to give him some respect. He always puts on a good show. I think this is a bad match-up for Belcher though. Maia should be able to get him down, and once on the ground its like swimming with a shark.

Belcher actually has good takedown defense. He is going to tool Maia on the feet and knock him out.

Dubs didn't you see the Maia/Miller fight?

Demian has some killer stand up.

All seriousness, I can see Demian being on top of his shit and if he can get the Great Chael Sonnen down then he can get Belcher down. But I can also see Belcher getting on top of his shit and avoiding the takedown and hitting Maia with some hard punches and kicks.

True, I think we’ve seen the last takedown attempt in Cote’s career. Still, I’m a Belcher fan. He’s got great kicks, good combos, and if Maia gets in to grab him and drag him down he’ll eat a bunch of knees.

by P-Dub on May 28, 2010 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I was impressed with his chin as well.

He was not bothered by Cote’s strikes at all, he just walked right through them, that is why Cote went for the takedown. Maias stand up improvements will not help him, if he is not abale to hurt Belcher when he connects. I tend to look at a fighters last couple of fights ,I believe you get a better and more realistic indication of how they will perform in their next fight , that being said, Belchers last two wins were impressive, and as much as I like Maia, I see him ending up like he did against Nate Marquardt. Should be a good one.

by Ade on May 29, 2010 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Agree

I also do not understand why people love Belcher. He is a journeyman fighter in my book, a guy who will make a nice living in the sport but will never be a champ or even a champion contender. Plus he loses points for the ufc’s ugliest tattoo.

lol totally disagree

I got Maia subbing him from his back. Triangle. What does that do for Maia though if he wins? Clearly no instant title match again. Didn’t even deserve the first one. They give him one more and hope he loses? What if he wins? NO ONE wants part 2 of that sh*t.

Gives him a W.

Sure, he wont be gettin’ a title shot anytime soon, but Belcher is a respectable opponent. Maia should take this once it hits the mat.

Georges is cutting from somewhere around 190 lbs

He’s only 2 inches shorter than Wanderlei and he’s got more reach; he could fight 185 lbs, only person he probably wouldn’t beat is A. Silva.

Alves and Hardy were both bigger than he is

Fitch is lanky, but still had the height on him. I really don’t think Sonnen is the better wrestler of the two either. Assuming GSP put on another 15-20 lbs of muscle, then cut down to 185 from 205-210, he wouldn’t physically have a problem with anyone in the weight class. And skills wise he’s a fighting genius.

You really think Georges is scared of people? freenow your trolling is to be expected in a GSP thread but you don’t have to take it into every thread. You just worry about Fedor and if he will be able to beat his can. Which can is he fighting again?

At least Georges isn’t hiding in another organization to avoid good fighters, much like that over rated, washed up, lazy, fat, ugly(like all russians) fight dodger you call god.

Speaking of ugly Russians

I remember a Louix Theroux show i saw years ago that was Russian based. He was invited to a Russian wedding. His guide (who was a woman) said do you notice how good looking the women were, but how the men seemed to be lacking in the good looks department. He said that he did observe that there definitely differences in the looks department. She said that is because the majority of the strong handsome men got killed off in the war, and now what we are left with are the descendants of the the weaker ones that weren’t good enough to fight. I remember it cracked me up at the time, but I was bit shocked because she actually said it with a straight face like she actually meant it.

I wouldnt have given him a chance against Marquardt either

And look what happened. But I think if you cant finish Anderson, then it’s only a matter of time and Sonnen seems to lack power and submissions. His last five wins have been via decision and his last four losses have been by submission. Even if he can keep Silva down, it will be five rounds of submission attempts by Anderson.

It sucks though because I really want Silva to lose. Sonnen doesn’t have the power to stop him and he won’t be able to ride a 5 round LnP clinic on him. Silva probably wins but I’m hoping for Sonnen to surprise me again.

Belcher is at best a middle of the road MW. He and Cote both are. Just typical UFC overhyping. Then again Maia is also pretty overhyped so he might win. I mean aside from Sonnen, Maia has no great wins.

I had my own preferences for both fighters. I would have rather seen Vitor Belfort vs Belcher for Vitor’s tune up into a title fight, and Maia vs Palhares to see who the best grappler at 185 is. Most times you get two good wrestlers together or two good jits guys together and they don’t want to play that game. They’d rather throw the dice and see who sucks more at striking, rather than who’s better on the ground. Exactly judomania

Maia v Palhares would be awesom I think. You guys dont think that each would want to prove that they were the best at Jits? For sure Palhares would make sure that fight ended up on the ground, I would love to see it.
BTW: who would have thought that a guy named judomania would love a Karo fight

by domino effect on May 28, 2010 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Why would you go to the ground trying to prove something, knowing your opponent could sub you at any second

When you know for a fact the chances of them KOing you standing are next to none? That’s why most grappler vs grappler matches end up turning into sloppy kick boxing fights.

O damn

I agree that often it is the case that two wrestlers/BJJ fighters end up striking, I just dont think it would happen in a Maia Palhares fight. Palhares has no interest I think, vs Maia or anyone else, in standing. Maia might try to kickbox, but lets be honest there is no way he could KO Palhares, & they both know that. Palhares would find a way to get inside, the fight would find a way to end up on the mat. Plus, Jackanapes is right, more often its wrestlers that end up cancelling each other out.

Most gameplanning revolves around finding an opponents weakness

And then attacking that weakness. In their case they are both weak in the striking department/world class on the ground, if his gameplan was to go straight to the ground then it’s his intention coming into the fight to play russian roulette. More often than not you see strikers trying to out strike eachother but not so much the other way around.

We disagree I guess

No big deal, I do agree that as a general rule everything you said is right. I just think that particular matchup would be an exception to the rule

by domino effect on May 28, 2010 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Even if it gets to the ground, they're both excellent in jits

More than likely they cancel eachother out and it ends up being a fight for maintaining a dominant position; in ADCC they have a 10 min rd to make something happen.

It’s rare to see a Renzo Gracie vs Carlos Newton type fight where two guys are giving up position and performing risky transitions.

That's why I was happy that MacDonald went to the ground with Maia

What could have been sloppy boxing 101 ended up being a really good and competetive grappling match. That’s still one of my favourite ever fights. I wish that more grapplers had the guts to stick to their strengths as nobody wants to watch sloppy striking.

maia vs jacare would be awesome too

You guys are nut bags sometimes..

Grappling wise those two are sic; but hands wise Jacare has him beat, that’s more than likely where the fight would take place.

I'd take Maia over Palhares, and Jacare over Maia.

But in a grappling match only(no striking allowed)I’d take Maia over both.

Jacare actually has power in his hands, unlike Maia he CAN KO someone

I’d take Jacare, Villasenior is no joke with his hands and Jacare did fine in their exchanges. I don’t think Maia’s on the same level as an athlete either.

I love watching all those guys fight

Palhares has to be my favorite, though, because I think he has the best wrestling and takedowns of the three. And after all if you cant get the fight to the ground, you cant work your bjj. (i’m looking at you Maia)

You are correct! Maia has the worst TD's of the three, but I would pick him as the favorite once it's down there.

Palhares looks like he packed on some muscle since he got to the UFC too, he looks like he’d have a rough weight cut.

Well, that one in the center: he had a flap holster and he was in no itchin' hurry. And the one second from the left: he had scared eyes, he wasn't gonna do nothin'. But that one on the far left: he had crazy eyes. Figured him to make the first move.

I'm gonna guestimate a ball/wang combo somewhere around $1200

Ha

That’s what’s he gets. He’s going to get subbed round 1 or 2. He better work on his stand up and don’t even think about going to the ground like he did with cote. Bc it will be goodnite Irene for him.

by Getknockedmma1 on May 28, 2010 1:37 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

That tat of a fat elvis that belcher has is out of control!

They shud keep belcher fresh for ufc117 so if AS makes short work of sonnen he can destroy belcher in the same night & end his bitching.

by d*locc on May 28, 2010 1:50 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

apparently,

Most fans are unfamiliar with belcher’s ground game! Don’t be so quick to assume that Maia’s is so superior to Belchers! Believe it or not, Belcher’s ground is his strongest game! He just prefers to strike these days! I see him winning this one on the feet though!

by Danas A Crossdresser on May 28, 2010 2:02 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Maia is 100X better on the ground. I think that's why people are assuming he'd stop Belcher on the ground.

Belcher is going to lose

its how his carrier has gone for a long time win 2 lose 1 Maia has some the best BJJ in mma Belcher has always been a couple of bad fights away from getting fucked off to strikeforce

by evilgumbo on May 28, 2010 4:49 PM EDT reply actions

I really don't know who could beat Silva

i mean the guy barely even tries anymore and hes not getting close to being beaten. I would love to see him move up to heavyweight, i think it would be the only time we’d see him get challenged cos he hasn’t been challenged for a long time, when was the last time you heard goldberg or rogan say “silva could lose here” or “silva’s in trouble”. I admit tho, GSP may be the guy who beats him if that ever happens, cos you can be a great fighter but if some1 can hold you down for 5 rounds, your fucked. I.E Kos and daley

File this under:

He’s gonna show everyone whats up.

Belcher by TKO.

No question Maia has the better ground game, but Maia’s improving stand-up game will be his downfall. He’ll keep it on the feet for two long, and Alan will capitalize. Belcher’s stand-up will be too much for Maia.

by Craig15 on May 28, 2010 11:08 PM EDT reply actions

Damnnn!

Two of my favourite fighters, will be sad to see one of them have to lose, ah well. I see either a 3rd rd TKO maybe for Belcher or 1st/2nd sub for Maia.
