"This is easily my biggest fight and my biggest test. Diego’s come along leaps and bounds with his stand-up, and I still think his hustle and his Jiu-Jitsu are his strongest suits. He’s going to come and try to go frantic on me early, and he’ll probably try and take me down. But I just see myself beating him up standing then eventually getting my takedown and staying on top and trying to pound him out. I’ve watched most of Diego’s fights anyway because he’s always on the main card of the UFC shows. I watch most of them when they’re live, but I’ve gone back and studied quite a few of his tapes. A lot was expected of him at 155

and I think the fight with BJ was a big disappointment. He offered no effective offence whatsoever in what was supposed to be a competitive fight, and I think the UFC realized then and there that he will never hold a title at either weight class. He seems to have a decent fan base though so I’m surprised that they wouldn’t still promote him pretty heavily.

I like John's chances in this one

His takedowns are effective and his ground and pound is vicious. Diego has struggled with good wrestlers in the past and if John can take him down then I like his chances in this one, especially as Diego is coming off the most humiliating loss of his career and has gone from a title contender at 155 to a young prospect with talent but no name value. This is a dangerous fight for Diego, though it all depends on how motivated he is and whether or not John can handle the pressure of such a high profile fight.

Diego has only lost to Penn, Fitch and Kos - all via decision - not even close to a KO or a sub. Hathaway will have to pour everything plus the kitchen sink to be able to beat Diego.

I don't think Diego is declining as much as not evolving..

He loses to big wrestlers at 170 and BJ Penn at 155. No shame in either of these. He is a classic overachiever that his speed and work ethic make him dangerous at 170, but these traits don’t translate well to 155 where everyone is fast and everyone (top 10) has a big motor.

Hathaway will not stop him, but will win a decision. He has better stand-up and is as good a wrestler, if not better. Plus he wins the length battle.

Hathaway has “better” striking then diego. And I dont think Diego is going to allow him to shoot. Diego is going to push the action and try to get on top. And also in no way do I think Hathaway has “better” wrestling then Deigo either.

Diego is not a striker. BJ easily picked him apart. Not saying Hathaway is BJ, but he has tremendous length and good footwork as shown in the Taylor fight, when it was standing.

Diego is a small wrestler (for 170) with good GnP and a big motor, but little else. If he gets Hathaway down, Hathaway’s length should be a concern.

Diego probably is the better wrestler. Apologies for the generalities (better), but as big a fan as you are of Diego, I am the opposite.

BJs striking is at an elite level. Hathaways is not. Diegos is very active and accurate. And he uses lots of strikes and lots of angles. And he has more power at WW. I think your right about Diego having a tough time with wrestlers but at an elite level. (KOS, Fitch) Hathaway is far from that level.

And to touch on Diegos antics. Diego is a nut case we all know that. Sleeps with oxygen. Disappears in the mountains for days/weeks to meditate and do yoga. He is at peace with his body and mind more then most of us can ever dream of being.

He is ultra focused. Dedicated and outright radiant. His staredowns are just as real as the next guys. Most staredowns are fake. Why not touch on BJ licking his lips coming into the octagon. That isnt a natural thing to do. What about when BJ droops his hand at staredowns? That isnt a real staredown either.

Diego doesn't have many submissions off his back

He used some vicious elbows but Guida’s stationary position on top with his head on Diego’s chest and non-existent ground and pound made it easier for Diego to strike from his back, Hathaway is a much more active guy on top than Guida so unless Diego has worked on his BJJ from his back he won’t be able to win rounds by striking off his back again.

No because It Exists

A loss can be deflating. It can be traumatic. It can be embarrassing. It can stay in a guys mind for a long time. It can hurt him in the next fight because he may not be a hundred percent mentally stable.

BUT on the other hand.

It can an awakening. It can light a fire. It can bring out the best in people. It can force someone to change themselves. It can provide a boost. If your mentally strong you can use this to become better.

Ultimately it depends on how mentally tough the guy is. And Diego is mentally tough. The interesting for me here is how Diego is going to come back from being absoluetly demolished like he has never been before.

I want to see how he’ll react, personally I don’t think leaving your weight class and getting drunk is a good reaction to a demoralising loss so it’ll be interesting to see whether he can overcome this defeat. Diego’s always been a confident and self-motivated fighter but he’s never been dominated like he was by BJ and if that fight took away some of Diego’s self-belief then he could be in big trouble in this fight.

that losing to BJ was bad sure but I truly believe dropping two straight to Kos and Fitch while also dropping your long time training camp was much more mentally draining.

Penn won via TKO due to a cut, David. That is a huge difference from losing via a KO or a flash KO. BJ did everything he could to put Diego on ice and he could not do it. Diego's will is too strong, mate. Hathaway better bring his A+++ game.

diego basically tapped out...every other fight when you see the fight stopped because of a cut the fighter always goes completely ape shit

He looked like a broken man at the end as well, the fact that he got smashed at the Fighters Only awards ceremony not long after that fight and that he decided to move back up to 170 to take a much lower profile fight makes me think that he has lost a lot of his confidence, which was his best attribute in the first place. Hathaway won’t finish him but he could win a decision, this is a very dangerous fight for Diego and for once I’m backing the underdog.

Toughness alone won't help him if Hathaway takes him down

You don’t have to be BJ to beat him and I wouldn’t be surprised if that loss breaks Diego because he has always been a confidence fighter and a humbling defeat like that could end up being Diego’s downfall as a fighter. Some losses make fighters stronger, some make them fold and this could have been the fight that finished Diego as a top fighter.

The fight may be lower profile

but that would be more the choice of the UFC than Diego. He is a proper company man who would never turn down any fight they offered him, and if he did turn it down you would say he was ducking him or he was scared. Not many fighters would have made it out of the first round with BJ after that punch and the punches that followed, Diego went five rounds, it was a dissapointing loss, but there was no shame in it. The Kos fight is irrelevant, and he asked to fight Fitch when everybody else was ducking Fitch and made it a close fight. Diego is far from done, the guy still believes he is destined to wear a belt even if most don’t think it. I looked forward to seeing him have many more fights in the UFC.

He is too small to be a credible threat at 170.

He is a natural 170, but the top of the heap at 170 are natural 185’ers. 170 is dominated by wrestlers that know how to cut effectively from 185-190 (GSP, Kos and Fitch) and Alves, who cuts from 200+. Diego walks around at what 175?

Diego is not a Natural 170er nor does he walk around at 170. And Kos and Fitch are not “natural” 185ers. They are just big MW’s. Alves on the other hand you can make a case for being a legit MW fighting at WW.

Their natural training weight is 185 or more. They use dieting and water cutting to reach 170.

How is that not a natural 185 pound man? Am I confusing the lingo? Did the ability to cut weight get included into someone’s “natural” weight? sure, no one fights at their natural weight, at least in North America, but it is still their natural weight, correct?

That would mean Tibau was a natural 200 pounder even though he competes at 155. He would be more like a natural MW. The word natural can often be mistaken

Diego use to be a small Welter Weight hes about average now

In the training camp leading up to the Penn fight Diego was actually 183 184 b4 he started his cut.Given all of that time i guarantee you he cut from at least 180 for this fight without a doubt.He’s gonna have his cardio and pace advantage again and he’s gonna totally out class Hathaway whether its on the feet in the clinch or ground.Remember these words;)Over and out
