'Rampage' Jackson and Rashad Evans trade verbal jabs during today's UFC 114 media call

Quinton-jackson-and-rashad-evans_medium

Wow. I guess these two gentlemen really don't get along after all.

Though we were all witnesses to the drama that unfolded on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 last fall, some people still viewed the beef between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and "Suga" Rashad Evans as somewhat of a facade. Well, if that's the case, the two light heavyweights successfully carried their brilliant acting performances to today's UFC 114 media call.

Below is a brief transcription of the verbal warfare that took place during the call.

Rampage: "It'd just be a moral victory for me. He has no title. He couldn't even defend it, you know? I didn't even know why I was fighting him. But after being on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10, now I know why, it's to teach guys like this a lesson. This ain't gonna be a big accomplishment for me. What has he done? I was the first undisputed champion in this sport. He hasn't done anything compared to me. This is a step backwards. He's real fake and real cocky for someone that hasn't done nothing."

Rashad: "I was a world champion man. I got the belt off the guy who beat you [Forrest Griffin]. Where's your belt? You don't got nothing either. So we're the same aren't we?"

Star-divide

Rampage: "We're no where near the same."

Rashad: "That's right, I'm better than you."

Rampage: "You can't do nothing better than me."

Rashad: "Hey, the best thing about all this s**t talking is that in two weeks we get to see what happens. And please be at your best. Let me know what I can do to make sure you're at your best."

Rampage: "Just show up. At the end of the day on May 29, you know you're getting your a** kicked."

Sounds legit to me. And that's only the first three minutes. I strongly suggest you listen to the rest of the call courtesy of Cagewriter.

So who won the opening exchange, "Rampage" or Evans?

Definitely Rampage.

Rashad has a glass jaw. He got outstruck by Tito. The only way he beat T. Silva was b/c the UFC wrestler friendly lay/pray/wait technique.

He can try to throw multiple leg kicks but that will open him up for a counter strike on the chin.

Rampage by ko.

by delldog on May 18, 2010 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

This fight is not going to be fan friendly at all....

I hope everyone is ready to be let down by this one. I can see Rashad doing 1 of 2 things. Using the tactic Bisping used against leben, except with leg kicks as opposed to pitter-patter shots. Or he will jab, disengage, shot for a takedown, lay and pray, get stood up, rinse and repeat, and attempt to exploit Rampage’s cardio.

For some reason, I just see shad frustrating Page, waiting for him to get tired, and squeaking out a close and BORING decision.

Once again, the fans get let down…

As long as Rashad wins I won't feel letdown

Grudge matches usually end up disappointing anyway. There’s no way that Rashad is going to stand and bang with Rampage, he’s got more sense than that. I’ll be happy watching him outwrestle Rampage and prove that he is an elite fighter.

Rashad outwrestle Rampage???

In his dreams maybe. Rampage could outwrestle that two-faced little prick with one leg tied behind his back. Rampage is a much stronger and better wrestler than Rashad. Rashad’s only hope in this fight is to stick-n-move and use his handspeed and footwork to outrun Rampage and pepper him with jabs to outscore him on the cards. If he tries to stand in the pocket, Page will knock him out. If it goes to the ground, Page will break him in half. If Page comes in shape, Rashad’s only game is to outmaneuver him and take it to the scorecards.

I don’t know man, why would you think the small guy would be able to bully the big guy? I can’t ever see that happening. Rashad couldn’t take it to Tito and was put on his ass so many times and he was getting controlled in the clinch for the most part.
Rampage i would imagine is much stronger than Tito is and a better standup fighter and wrestler actually.

If he does go with the wrestling strategy, I'm sure he would wait until the seond half of the 2nd round.

Knowing how notoriously out of shape Rampage gets, Jackson would have Shad using lots of movement and leg kick to suck all Page’s energy… Then he would begin taking him down..

He’s notorious for being in shape come fight time, Cardio has never been a factor in any of Rampage’s fights.

This fight won’t be a mind game, it will come down to who the better man is. Rampage is ready for everything. ppl need to look at technique/skill instead of yapping about shit like “game plans”

Rashad's KO power!

Besides Chuck all of his other KO’s are pounding out wins with his hands. He does not have the KO power to take out Rampage. 15 knees and a handful of soccer kicks and Rampage was still standing in front of Wandy and Shogun. Rashad does not have that kind of offense and while he may have better head movement, Rampage has the better hands and true KO power.

I was a fool for ever doubting Shogun. I should be ashamed for never giving him a chance to get healthy. Shogun made Machida look B-level-Just like my bet made me look b-level!

Speed Kills

Look at the last few UFC LHW title fights where the title has changed hands and recently it has all been about speed and this could got back to 6 years ago when the rule is Broken by Couture fighting a very mentally worn Vitor. But look at it Liddell beats Couture (do doubt Liddell was faster and more explosive), Rampage beats Liddell (again it was clear Rampage had the explosiveness that night), Gump vs Bump (Gump was in better shape and was quicker that night), I guess the first round of Forrest and Shad was one sided to Forrest but the second round Shad got the spark, Shad vs Machida (Machida was so much quicker to the punch that night) and Shogun was able to time Machida and beat him to the punch in both of their fights.

I like Rashad in this, he is so much quicker, had KO power and that is all you need. Rampage has RIDICULOUS power but that is just over the top and YES Rashad is the much better wrestler, I mean are you kidding me? People tried comparing Hendo and Page fighting but that is different. Hendo is not a true LHW but rather a MW and he was Greco Roman which is not based off of the Chute which Shads free style is so do not compare the too. I might get blasted for taking Shad in this one but this is just the way I see it.

A bit of an extremeist much?

Tell I am wrong then that every time in the last 6 years when the best has changed hands the speedier guy won. It is a trend I have noticed and I think many people are underestimating Rashad in this one.

yeah, I've heard that from many sources.

Apparently, Tito hates Ortiz so much that he shacked up with a sleazy porn star just to make him look bad. Then Ortiz beat up Tito’s girlfriend.

Personally, I can’t stand either of them I also don’t like Rashad and Evans. Both of them are douchebags too. I hope Rampage knocks them both out.

by (shonuff) on May 18, 2010 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Don't be fooled.

Rampage really hates Rashad b/c he’s an over-hyped UFC TUF alumni that loves to run his mouth over his non-accomplishments.

Rashad hate for Rampage isn’t really genuine; however, he specializes in talking crap so it appears to be real.

Also, Rampage doesn't like black people.

He said so back when he was calling out Randleman in PRIDE. He wants to be the only black guy in the sport. It really pissed him off when Randleman slammed Fedor. He was like, "No hi didn’t! by MidWayMonster54 on May 18, 2010 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Shad all the way on this one

He’s just too quick for Page. He’s an amazing wrestler and an even better striker. I can’t imagine why any source would favor Rampage to win this fight….I’m not saying it couldn’t happen because it’s by a narrow margin that Shad outclasses him…..but with Page’s ring rust, the odds just favor Shad to win here. To say “Rampage will beat him, it’s just a matter of how” makes you sound like a noob.

by cosa7189 on May 18, 2010 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

And you ...

….using the word " noob " makes you look like a douche nozzle . So here you go Page via KO . Rashad does have the speed advantage , but lacks the power to KO Page . That said when he uses his speed advantage Rampage will use his superior boxing skills and power advantage to catch him , much like the slower Thiago Silva , and Rashad will be doing the " Stanky Leg " all over again . And honestly too much is made over this ring rust crap .

by MidWayMonster54 on May 18, 2010 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

he’s unlike any other fighter, ring-rust doesn’t affect him.

wait…what? why?

Also rampage is notorious for letting himself go after fights. He doesn’t stay in top condition, he has a binge/purge mentality. Not the healthiest, but i guess it works for him.

HOWEVER- I have to agree that he’s going to come in with a lot of ring rust, and he’s going to fight very emotionally. He’s going to be winging bombs, swinging for the cage, and making mean faces the whole night.

I’d like a KO, but i see an end similar to the forest fight. Page will look great the first 3-4 minutes, and will fade faster than (insert appropriate thing that fades unusually fast here).

He KO’d Salmon with a head kick, Chuck Lidell with a punch, Forrest Griffin with GNP. Anything can happen in an MMA fight. Who predicted Machida to get KO’d in Rd 1 by Shogun. I sure didn’t. Let’s see how it goes down, but my money is on Rashad.

And which one of those ...

… fighters you listed still has a chin or a career for that matter ? Chuck had been KO’d already ( Rashad got Pages sloppy seconds there ) , Salmons is a never was and Forrest is punch drunk already in his career . So really give me a real name who has a chin he KO’d . How bout Tito ? Tito’s chin is suspect and he didn’t KO him . Look at who Rampage has KO’d Wandy & Chuck ( Page was the first to do so for some time ) . At the time both still could take some punishment and Page got them with one .

David you should really look up some Outkast. Unfortunately ‘Hey ya’, ended up being the most overplayed song here for a year. If you wanna try:

Sorry Ms. Jackson (obviously)
B.O.B (bombs over baghdad)
Roses
Idylwyld Blues
The Whole World

There’s a lot of ppl who like their gangsta old skool stuff, but I like the weird more hip hop techno Outkast so that’s what I recommended.

To be honest the only Outkast song I know is Hey Ya but that was some funny shit, hopefully Rashad does come out to something original like that. I wish more fighters would use their entrance music to make fun of their opponent.

David WS,
I’ve heard rumor that there is only a very select list to choose from for intro songs in UFC. I always wish I could get a proper answer on if that’s true because if it is its super lame, and if not where is the creativity? Like look at boxers? They got some real funny ones.

I'm not sure mate but I wouldn't be surprised

Dong Hyun Kim was supposed to come out to the DJ Sammy remix of Heaven for the Matt Brown fight and Dana took the piss out of him on his vlog then in the end Kim came out to a different generic song. Since then I’ve been dubious about how much control the fighters actually have over the songs and I’ve heard some things about Dana having the final say over what these guys pick. The fact that they always get dubbed over in the DVDs anyway because of copyright I don’t see why they shouldn’t be able to pick their own songs, there doesn’t seem to be any legislative reason anyway. Typical Dana, the guy is a control freak and wants to be in charge of everything, even something as trivial as entrance music. No wonder guys like Swick listen to their ipods on their way to the cage and most entrances are so generic.

that was my thought on headphones too

If they were allowed to pick their own songs why would they wear headphones? Just play whatever song is on there for your intro. I think there’s a list. And a pretty short one at that. Kinda lame if there is. I mean maybe since you’re Dana and need money for everything charge them an extra 100.00 for a song not on the list or something lol.

Think I read somewhere...

that listening to loud/fast music can build adrenaline. Many athletes will listen to music before/while they work out, not just for the rhythm. You would think that the screaming fans would have the same affect. Eh, just a thought.

Im so over it

Im so tired of this trash talk. They dont even know how to talk trash right. They r both uneducated fighters talking nonsense. Before someone says oh Rashad went to college he is educated! I know Evans went to MSU, but I live in MI and know u dont have to be a genius to go to MSU. Pretty much just have to graduate HS. Sweet ass party school I will add though. Anyways Im tired of this and just cant wait for them to fight. Ayone else notice that Rampage looks fat as hell in the primetime? I want Rampage to win and think he is the better fighter but if hes out of shape, he is in trouble.

by mspenc24 on May 18, 2010 6:34 PM EDT reply actions

I think the weight cut is going to hurt Page in this fight… I say he is going to gas in the second round and Evans will finish him….

Take a look at the Hendo vs Shields fight.. The weight cut killed Hendo in that fight… And Page is a hell of a lot bigger than Hendo is….

Hendo is also known to look gassed in all of his fights. I’ve followed him since back in Pride and he’d look even more tired in fights back then.

There’s nothing wrong with Quinton’s gas tank and he’s never had problem making weight. So your speculations are really crap at best.

yeah, he over trained. He got exhausted. if you had ever been training hard you would know that you just don’t lose a gas tank like that. If you train hard when you’re younger you’re good, it’s not like Page has been away for 3 yrs from training.

someone else's success brings pain.

Train

Every single one of those guys train their ass off for each and every fight… If they don’t then it shows big time!!!! You can say what you will about his gas tank but when it comes down to him cutting all this weight it is going to hurt him… He will gas in the sencond round and Rashad is going to have his way with him… And if he didn’t train 100% then he is in for a long, long, long night!!!!!

Nonsense

Your a pro athlete so not training as hard is no big deal. Ok that makes u a moron if u believe that. The best train their ASS off and that why page will never be the best. For the record he is my favoirte fighter along with BJ. But unfortunatly they both slack off in training sometimes and it shows.

by mspenc24 on May 18, 2010 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Page could be the best

But your right to be the most important thing is his endurance, if he’s tired in the later rounds Rua will KO him out. Him and BJ are naturally gifted but lack in the training as did Hendo but they are all talented enough to be champs and have been.

The LHW division (as well as all of MMA in general) has evolved to the point where simple talent isn’t enough to get the belt. You need talent, endurance, and just a little bit of lady luck on your side. He was champ, sure, and he deserved it: PAGE IS A BEAST. But unless he puts the other pieces of the puzzle together he will never be champion again.

Yeah my house is million miles away still doesn`t mean shit

I don`t using the length of time I have been watching MMA in my arguements but anybody that has watched MMA from the Hendo Pride days understands Hendo`s cardio is his weakness, was and still is. I`m one of his biggest fans man and all his interviews and coverage I watched and many times he has stated his hate for training. After UFC 100 he didn`t start training tell Feb. and was 230-240lbs and stated he was enjoying his time off, and staying away from training. Hendo in the first round might be the best MW and LHW in the world but rounds two on is a different story.

He gassed against Lil Nog as well in the MW GP

Hendo’s always had horrible cardio and it’s cost him a bunch of fights. Really there is no excuse for not training hard so I hate it when guys like Hendo and Rampage use being lazy to justify some of their losses, at the end of the day training is an integral part of fighting and if you don’t do it properly then it’s your own fault and you deserve to lose.

...A long night for Rampage...

I’ve always been a Rampage fan, but I think he’s in for a tough lesson…. & it has nothing to do with Rashad Evans. He has taken a long layoff, has been dealing with many distractions for quite a while now, & is at a questionable-level training camp, while Evans, despite a tough loss to Machida (which can make a dedicated fighter a much better fighter) has been focused, working on his game, maturing, & in the mix the whole time Rampage was away.
I don’t think any fighter, including one as talented as Rampage, can afford to be away from the game & unfocused as long as Rampage has & still fight at an elite level…. the MMA game has evolved way past that. I’m taking Rashad Evans on this one.

Rashad has no chin. We seen that in the machida fight n the thiago silva fight. He hit em with 1 punch towards the end of the fight and he was on queer street the only reason he won was bc silva didn’t try finsh the fight. We will all see in about 2 weeks.

I cant call a winner in this one....

In my opinion these guy are very similar, both of their strengths are boxing and wrestling and their both pretty even in those two styles, but the difference is Rampage has more power/strength and rashad has more speed/agility, so i wont be surprised if ether one of them Knocks the other the F*** out.

by John Rosencrans on May 18, 2010 8:41 PM EDT reply actions

Rampae Has An Iron Chin!

The only way Rashad wins this fight is if he lays on top of Rampage. I do think Shad’s wrestling is just a little better than Page’s but Page has an excellent sprawl and if Shad get’s his takedowns stuffed a couple of times then I think he will try to stand and bang with Page and that will be a big mistake. I think standing Rampage will break his spirit very fast and eventually knock Shad out. My advice for Rashad is to work the leg kicks and time your takedowns because that is the only way I see him winning. I do agree this fight has the potential to be a snooze fest but it also has the potintial to be a barn burner and end in the first round. Either way I’m to curious to not watch it and really hope for a good fight. Knock his bitch ass out Page!

Just giving jimmy dean here a hard time. Rampage definitely has a great chin, but the man can be KO’d. He’s not Garcia or zombie or Hendo, where a KO is literally impossible.

That being said I doubt Rashad KOs im

by Body Triangle on May 19, 2010 9:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I am with you

Rampage can be ko’ed but it’s going to take a flurry of strikes like Wanderlei did back in Pride where he was repeatedly eating knee after knee. Last time I checked rashad isn’t a Muai Thai wrecking machine like Wand was back in Pride and Rampage has a lot better hands than Chuck he proved that twice. Anyone can be knocked out. Big Nog proved that theory to be correct.
